A Little Vice (Trans Magical Girl fic)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
(But goodness, I really really wish we had a chance to see villainous Gula and C interactions, and just when C went from "useful target, explotably close to the enemy" to "ooh, egg to crack! And then make my wife and eat for breakfast every day..." in her eyes, and if that showed through in any of her Resinners or other schemes.)

I would love some more Gula / Avaritia focused sidestories, someday, either by shadell or fan work stuff. Like there's so much there! How did she flip, what happened when Avaritia stole the Gluttony seed for her, how would they interact without the rest of the cast around in the future...

Temperance and Avaritia keep having these one on one fights in the margins of other scenes, too, and C doesn't focus on it much but that implies a lot, right?

¹(Though now that I think about it, given Avaritia's reaction to C back when ey thought 'he' was Luxuria, this could be a problem for Inessa in the long run. : / Ship's more battered than I thought, but I'll still believe in it!)
I think that has less to do with Luxuria specifically and more to do with the fact that Superbia's assumptions about C made "him" sound kinda incel-ey. If Luxuria Fox was a timid closeted lesbian, ey'd probably love to break her out of her shell. (And reduce her psychological defense mechanisms to rubble. That's what help looks like!)

On the other hand, it does feel sometimes like she's biding her time a little too much, to the point I had even wondered a bit here, if she was doing some sort of long-game playing both sides bit. I don't think that's really likely now, but still not entirely out of the realm of possibility. Temperance is a good virtue, but taken to an extreme, it can be indecisiveness or a refusal to commit... (Kind of the basis behind one of my own Magical Girl villains.)
Temperance (the virtue) aside, Temperance (the shark) puts a high value on self-determination. She'll crack as many jokes about C in a dress as she can get away with, but she stops when "he" says it makes him uncomfortable, and she'd never slip someone magical HRT without their knowledge.

If Avaritia really wants to stay with Superbia, Temperance won't force her to leave, even if Temperance thinks that would be better for em.

(Even if I still kinda wanna see just what Gula Shark at her peak was like.)
Same. (As in "the same," not as in サメ.)
I have no idea how that would add to A Little Vice's narrative, but if Shadell can come up with a separate parallel arc, SVAH cour 1 could be a fun spin-off.

(I wonder how Mom would feel if she did eventually come back for her son, only to find she has a daughter instead.)

(...Or, for that matter, that her daughter is also a bat now!)
I really hope she's more worried about the bat thing.

(I saw some people saying Avaritia holding back here was kinda hypocritical at best, if not outright suspiciously convenient, but honestly, IMO it would have been more of a dick move on eir part to intervene here. Sometimes you just need to let this stuff out on your own. (Preferably not on your friends via their own elemental powers, but that's a whole other issue from Avaritia's thing.) Maybe I'm just taking things at face value too much, but for all that ey get caught up in all these big philisophical justifications for ultimately still being on the wrong side, ey don't strike me as being as manipulative as some people seem to be ascribing to em.)
Avaritia, in eir own way, also puts a high value on self-determination. Ey appointed eirself arbiter of which parts of someone are genuine and which are just external pressure, and ey doesn't think about how eir second-order victims might not want to get attacked by monsters, but ey wouldn't consciously manipulate someone to do something ey didn't think they wanted.

On a tangent, if Charity left the Abyssal Beasts first, ey absolutely would try to drag Gula to the Saints' side.

(As in, in the same bed, as a couple. Verdict's still out on whether Lupin is ace or not, so cracking jokes about the more euphemistic interpretation feels weird to me. ^.^; )
The evidence for em possessing or lacking any sexual/romantic interest is null in all directions, but I like this interpretation. Hard to prove a negative, though.

Now I'm just picturing if a full Avaritia/Inessa/C/Temperance/Avaritia(again) polycule somehow happens, the Brandts' confused but not unhappy response to realizing just how much game their daughter has, and having four kids now instead of just one or the intended two.
Probably not what you meant by "Avaritia (again)," but I like the idea of Inessa dating both Avaritia and Lupin before learning they're the same person.

If there's one thing I've learned from observing the Miraculous Ladybug fandom, it's that secret identities enable new dimensions of relationship drama.

I'm sorry. Or you're welcome, maybe? I'm getting mixed signals.
They're laugh crying because what you're saying is true. Laughing cause it is honestly funny, but crying because, at the same time, the constant comedic shenanigans caused by the secret identity relationship drama means that the ships they like have problem with advancing, since characters are like "oh, how much I like that masked, mysterious person, nothing like that boring normie that I totes don't care about, even if they have the same hair and bodytype as the masked one".

In particular, we were the single most nominated entry in the Best Original Work category, though not by much
Vice sweep!
@ArlequineLunaire Oh, by the way. Michael knows of the Time Lords but not the Doctor?
Okay, to properly review this chapter (and pull a ricerockreckt but that's a good way to appreciate the story)
I told her to meet me in the park the next day.
That poor park, being the site of all their drama.
To them, this was probably the place where they saw me turning around. A wasted effort.
Goddamn, Chiro can't see it as her friends respecting their privacy in dealing with their relationship. I remember her comparing Temperance, of all people, to a youth pastor.
If I'd ever been the kind of person who knew what I wanted, we wouldn't have gotten here in the first place. But Inessa wouldn't get the joke, and it wasn't like I was any better at understanding me.
Finally, more self awareness.
"I don't think I really get it," she said at last. "But I'll do whatever I need to do to make you talk!"

I lifted off the ground to build a little height, then dove for her. Even now she dared to think we could go back, that we could let all our feelings out then return to the old status quo, like all this was just another monster of the week.
Goddamnit. Inessa just wants Chiro to actually explain her issues and what she wants. And Chiro is again making assumptions.
Anyway, next section we get to see Castitas' attacks, finally!
"I'm a ditz!" she shouted, delivering a roundhouse kick to my thigh. "I'm indecisive! I can't do anything alone! I'm a coward when it comes to the people I care about!"
Looking back on the previously stated fact her virtue is her honest love for others, then Luxuria Fox would probably dismiss her own love due to her cowardice and indecision, and perhaps feeling like a parasite from needing others, which would parallel Chiro's own issues with needing others. Huh, basically confirms her Beast self would be a tsundere.
"But that wouldn't be fair to you, or to anyone who's gotten hurt, would it?" She shook her head. "That's why, we should accept everything and go forward instead!" That was objectively nonsense. It didn't mean anything at all. And yet, Inessa acted like this was some divine revelation. "I'll stop looking up to the image of you I built up in my head all this time, and you can stop doing the same for me and we can finally talk to each other."
Uh, it makes sense to me.
"Then that means you can become anyone you want to be!" Inessa smiled brightly at me, still refusing to accept the obvious.

I stared at her, genuinely confused. Did she still not get it? Was I simply too pathetic for Inessa to comprehend?

"So you hate yourself," the words were heavy on her lips. "I know there's more to you than that! You liked being Chiro!"

I dive-bombed her, pulling in and out and striking again and again as she blocked and dodged my frantic assault.

"It was an act!" I shouted, "I was trying to get close to you!" Frustration helped give weight to my blows, and I managed to drive my knee into her solar plexus, doubling her over. I followed it up with a hammer of imitation fire from above.

[...]

"She's fake!" I said instead. "I'm not her. I'm not the kind of person who could be her! I'm just pretending!" I lifted off the ground, rising above Inessa to divebomb her.

"So?" she asked. "I'm an idiot, but, why does it matter if it's fake, if it's what you want?"
Inessa trying to get the point that what Chiro currently is isn't an immutable truth, and she can change. And also that the labels slapped on her aren't permanent. I'm sure there's a better way to talk about it, but I'm sleep deprived.
"It's not fair!" Inessa cut me off. "You're so kind to everyone else, why do you always get to be mean to yourself? If this was anyone else you'd tell them to try! That even if they couldn't be exactly the person they dreamt of, they could still become someone great!"

I probably would have casually made up something like that. Then again, I didn't hate anyone else the way I loathed myself, not even Superbia. Somewhere in the fight, Inessa's constant overtures had gone from impossible to almost sounding logical.
The whole point of Chiro's issue, how her envy (admiration) and kindness are intertwined, how they're twisted. And Inessa is finally breaking through the illusions of her self-loathing.
"CASTITAS METEOR SHOWER!!!" Inessa shouted as the arrow loosed.

The arrow rose up and up, exploding in a massive fireball that scattered the clouds for a moment. A thousand burning stars fell toward us.
"CASTITAS!" She raised her bow in front of her, spinning it as easily as anyone else might spin a baton. With each rotation it grew larger and larger, the flames extending the shape of the bow far beyond its limits.

"EMPYREAL," the flames around her stretched into a point, transforming Castitas herself into a gargantuan arrow.

"ARROW!" And she fired herself forward, shooting at me with all the light and heat of a newborn star.
I really love these attacks very much.
I closed my eyes and savored the oncoming warmth. Finally, it could end. Inessa would be sorry that she'd had to take it this far, but she was so strong.
Chiro, no matter how much she gets people, is really underestimating what death of someone you've been close to for years, by your own hands, does to someone. She talks a lot about the Saints holding onto their view of her and wanting to change her, but is herself insistent on her view of Inessa and wanting to make her kill.
The seed went oddly quiet, almost as if was hibernating. Of course, I could still feel it deep inside, waiting to welcome me back as soon as I admitted that all my efforts to be better were just another masquerade.
So, I've been wondering if she's stuck with the seed forever. Always ready to incentivize her worst side. That sure would suck.
Invidia has been defeated, but Inessa is being held hostage by the Abyssal Forest! Temperantia, Diligentia and Michael stage a perilous rescue attempt. Meanwhile, Chiro considers what she wants to do now that her power of envy has shattered. Just when it seems like all hope seems lost, a surprising ally arrives on stage!
Oh, the anime uses Chiro after she loses the shapeshifting. Well, it's closer to a name for her than C or Invidia Bat. Also, shows the anime wasn't shy about her gender identity. Big ups for Shining Virtue Angelic Heart. Wonder if the anime had little extra sections about being nice and respectful.
You know, we haven't seen if Inessa enjoys fighting, so I thought it would be cracky to have her randomly accept a someone's challenge to a duel, but I realize she will fight if it's a way for someone to express themself honestly, she would earnestly support that.

You are making a lot of assumptions about how far she's thought this through. She mostly wants her problems to end, one way or another. Which is bad enough on its own, but much worse when you have an excuse to pick fights with a superhuman opponent.

Are they so many? Inessa killing her having negative psychological effects seems like a pretty immediate and direct consequence.

I'm trying to imply that she's kinda suicidal and not thinking about consequences beyond that. She probably hasn't even thought far enough to realize that Inessa still has reasons to care about her, in spite of all the justifications she has for her self-loathing.

...man, it's inconvenient to talk about a character who has identified every name she's ever used with something she considers separate from her. An abandoned role, or a mask, or another mask.

"Kinda" suicidal is underselling it, tbh. She's not only looking for Suicide by Virtue Cop here, but also got so wrapped up in being an unlovable monster that she forgot Inessa COULD still love her until the executioner's axe failed to fall. Girl's not in a sound state of mind.

I got that, but Chiro also talks about Inessa being "strong" and that's why she'll get over it. She was too wrapped up in her self-loathing to see Inessa's feelings.
Also, the episode preview seems to default to Chiro as a name. Seems like the one identity that wasn't agonizing to her. Until we see what name she picks when she gets into a better state.

And earlier episodes defaulted to "Charlie," even though she seems to have preferred C at the time. I think it's reasonable to assume that the episodes are not written from some kind of objective point of view, but from the audience's perspective. So for as long as the audience thinks Chiro is a normal girl, the preview is going to describe her that way.

After the audience learns that Invidia and Chiro are the same person, your argument breaks down entirely. The previews for episodes 28 and 29 both call her both Chiro and Invidia. Even if we accepted the episode previews as an arbiter of the protagonist's identity above the protagonist's own thoughts, they're inconsistent.

The protagonist discarded Chiro as a mask, but it is, at least, one that gave her comfort while it lasted, and doesn't have all the murderbaggage of Invidia.

Also, I found some accidental fanart of our lovely protagonist (by which I mean someone linked it in a discord for a quest with similar themes):

Out of all the masks that she's worn, Chiro is the one that seems closer to what she considers her ideal self. But it's still something she identifies as a mask she wore, a lie she told, not herself.

Oh, by the way. Michael knows of the Time Lords but not the Doctor?

Long story short, the incarnation from my fanfic is from a timeline without the Time War, so The Doctor wouldn't stick out as much on the universal stage.

Speaking of DW, 'Ira Weevil' did make me think that the Daleks do kinda look like that bug, don't they? I usually link them with Turtles and Bears (due to the ear-bumps)

Invidia Bat by Renu
Not entirely caught up yet, but this story is great and at a few points hit me right in the shell (seriously, the "I'm not trans unfortunately. I wish I was trans but I'm a boy" was so on point it hurt). So anyway I doodled Invidia after her haircut (and count Fruitula because we stan count Fruitula in this house).

Does she have two pair of ears btw? It haunted me while I was drawing her upside down...

I honestly haven't thought about it. She *probably* doesn't, but it's not something on which I have super strong feelings. OTOH, getting the apple earrings as part of Invidia Bat's costume really just works and having them on the bat ears is so excellent.

Also holy shit that's gorgeous!!!!!!!!!!!! Thank you so much this is amazing.

Mhhh, somehow in my mental image the Count was right-side-up while Invidia was hanging lol. Like a double negative.

Anyway, art is super cute

Started reading this, it is good. I like the layer where vice and virtue aren't exactly good an evil? Superbia is evil and the Dark Forest is a destructive force but C repressing so much wasn't healthy.

To my understanding the story is saying Vice is what you think it is she believes that her desire is wrong so it's a vice but it's neither a vice nor a virtue inherently it's based around how one perceives
