"Any trouble?" The leatherbound skeleton asked the purple striped prostitute, it's hollow voice echoing strangely. It was showing a concerning degree of independence for one of the undead, a sure sign of trouble. If it wasn't a skeletal minion then it was possible that the being was actually a lich and Master Cynric was quite clear about the dangers of an immortal mage.
Seeming comfortable in the creature's presence, the blonde began leading the majority of her group back out of the room and answered, "We're okay for now."
With all of the potential enemies gone other than their leader and two of the demons, Louise decided to maintain her act for the moment. After all, it wouldn't hurt to let these people go free as long as they left her be. The nobleman spent most of the next few minutes alternating between peering out of the doors and casting glances at his hostages.
Unfortunately for him, Amy didn't seem too enthused with waiting and was using Louise's body to shield herself from the man's view. Huddled together on the floor, she couldn't see what Amy was doing without being suspicious, but the clicking noises informed her that the healer was using her phone to communicate with somebody.
"Don't worry, help is on the way." The girl whispered in a poor attempt at reassuring some one she thought was a scared child.
It was rather humiliating for that to be the healer's assumption, but it served the heiress' purpose well enough she supposed. Deciding to go with it, she shivered and clung to the brunette. An uncomfortably long while later, the sound of approaching sirens drew the rest of the thieves from the building's interior once more. They appeared agitated as they stepped up to the door and looked out into the street. Unexpectedly, the first to talk was the skeleton as it growled out, "Tattletale, you know how I say you're a fucking dumbass sometimes?"
"Uh, Tats... didn't you say the Protectorate would be out of town?" The leader asked as the bug controller began to breath heavily.
"They shouldn't be here!" The blonde trollop, Tattletale, shouted in alarmed confusion. "The boss said-"
"He was wrong, obviously! Jesus, we're lucky they care about hurting bystanders or Militia could have put a bullet through Regent's eye by now!" The possible lich was shouting now... somehow. Come to think of it, the thing had a lot more bulk to it than a skeleton should.
Bug-girl shook her head in denial, having regained her senses with admirable speed. "No, there's no way she'd do something like that, she's a hero."
"It doesn't matter, Miss Militia and half the wards have the front covered and I'd bet money on Halbeard being nearby." Tattletale said, interrupting the would-be argument before it began.
The dog masked woman was about to say something, but didn't get a chance as the skeleton asked, "How about the back? I could send flood the block and-"
"Vista is out there, going out the back is the same as using the front door." Tattletale said, rubbing at the bridge of her nose. "No, there's too many to fight and any ground we cover is going to be multiplied by the little squirt."
Louise fought back a laugh at that. It sounded like Vicky's friend was a real pain in the rear to go against. Thankfully any noise was covered by the sirens and panicked hostages. The skeleton slumped his shoulders and sighed, "Are you saying we should surrender?"
The dog-girl bristled. "We have hostages. If they come in here, we take out one of the hostages."
Ignoring the whimpers her teammate's words caused, the armored girl shook her head. "That's the worst thing we could do in this situation. No, we need to take them by surprise."
Louise didn't catch the rest of their conversation due to them huddling together, but a few moments of intense conversation later had the group turning toward their hostages. With over a dozen larger bodies between them and the thieves, neither Louise or Amy were noticed as the skeleton and the armored bug controller began to select individuals from the crowd. When the armored girl came closer, Louise buried her face in Amy's chest to hide her masked face and squeezed the healer tightly as if terrified.
"Don't even think about it, asshole!" The pinkette heard Amy growl, the words vibrating in a strangely soothing manner.
It was such a rare thing for her to be so close to another like this, even if it was just a convenient act rather than a real embrace. Shaking her head to clear away those depressing thoughts, blushing as she realized that she'd just inadvertently done something that could be construed as perverted. Thankfully Amy just took it as a sign of fear and spun the two of them around to use her own body as a shield.
"I-I'm really sorry about this." A muffled voice said gently as the girl continued on.
A minute or so later, several hostages were partially bound and gathered at the front entrance. More whispered conversation passed between the group of thieves and then the doors were thrown open. Eight prisoners were thrust out into the wall of darkness before all but Tattletale and bug-girl followed.
"One last thing to do," Tattletale announced with a strained smile, "I'll be right back. Keep an eye on things here."
"What? No! Tattletale! Dammit!" Bug-girl shouted, apparently disagreeing with her morally loose compatriot.
The following silence was eerie, only faint sounds of combat reaching through the muffling shadows to reach the door. Without the smokey darkness coating the edges of the room, Louise noticed the shear number of insects nearby and suddenly her fear wasn't entirely fake. A few dozen chaurus was one thing, but the swarming mass of chitin and fang that writhed and surged out into the street was another entirely. If this was what the girl brought when she didn't want to hurt people, Louise was afraid to think about what her home must look like.
The girl seemed unsteady on her feet and staggered just as the darkness outside separated into smaller pockets. The bone demons loped between clouds of shadow, striking out at the strangely dressed nobles that had come to save everyone. One demon pounced on a boy in rust colored armor and began to shake him around like a dog with hunk of meat before the world around it distorted and a white hand touched it's flank. For whatever reason, the demon stopped moving, apparently under the effect of a spell from one of the nobles.
When the world snapped back into place, the owner of the white hand bumped fists with a little girl in green who must have been Vista. Beside her was a woman in camouflage who had a large rifle in her hands and a white on red striped scarf over her face... or was it red on white? Either way, the rifle belched flames as another of the demons lost one of it's rear legs and collapsed in a whimpering heap. A third demon leapt out of the darkness and was promptly frozen mid air like the first before a pair of grenades were tossed at it.
As the final demon was submerged in an expanding mass of yellow-white foam, two events happened at once. The darkness vanished, leaving behind a bewildered Regent and an retching skeleton... which was perhaps one of the oddest things she'd seen in her life. The second thing to happen at that moment was Armsmaster entering through one of the interior doors with Victoria of all people!
Even without her spider parts and her upper body being the proper size for a human rather than the proportionally larger version Louise was used to, there was no mistaking that this was Vicky. Her perfect golden hair, her beautiful and strong facial features, her heroic appearance like something out of a bedtime story. Why hadn't she gone out and found Vicky sooner? Surely the merciful goddess before her would have been much more helpful than the worthless peons she spent the last few days with. Armsmaster said something irrelevant and launched an attack from his weapon, but Louise couldn't be bothered to turn and watch when she could look at Vicky instead.
Ignoring the growing warmth in the back of her head, the pinkette felt her heart flutter when Victoria floated over to land next to her. "Amy, are you okay?!" The beautiful blonde asked with such concern that it didn't even matter to Louise that she was being ignored.
"Yeah sis, I'm fine." Amy said, cementing her place as second most important after perfect Victoria. "Louise are you... Vicky, can you cut that out?"
"Wha- Oh yeah, sure." Vicky said apologetically and just like that, the blonde didn't seem nearly as captivating.
Hissing in pain, Louise held the back of her head where Vahlen implanted the 'anti-psionic chip'. The skin over the device was tender and feverish, making the girl rather annoyed at both herself and Vicky. Sure, she'd been told about some sort of aura and should have expected it, but her friend hadn't mentioned how strong it was! Glaring at Vicky, she took a step back and held up her hands to begin healing herself.
"Whoa, calm down!" Vicky said, apparently misunderstanding what the growing glow meant. "I'm a hero."
"Watch out, she might heal you to death!" Amy jeered and looked down in concern. At Louise's dismissive wave, she turned her attention back to the blonde. "Shouldn't you be helping with the fight?"
"She'd the mysterious new healer you were talking about? Isn't she a bit young to work at the hospital?" Vicky asked, causing the pinkette's chest to clench painfully.
How could she just- No, don't be stupid Louise, she hasn't met you yet.
Done with healing her minor, if painful wound, she did her best to ignore the creeping doubts in her mind. It wasn't like Vicky forgot about her, this was just the past somehow. Master Cynric did say time wasn't a solid concept between realms. "I was just as young when I started." Amy argued.
"Yeah and you turned out so cheerful."
Huffing, the brunette gave her sister a small smile and pointed out, "You still haven't said anything about helping- Armsmaster!"
A gunshot deafened everyone in the room, causing Louise and Victoria to turn to see the man in question stagger. Luckily, he appeared uninjured... not so luckily, he was immediately swarmed by a buzzing cloud of insects as the bug-girl drunkenly staggered toward the pistol wielding Tattletale.
Even less lucky, to the uninformed perhaps, Amy's shout caused the blonde thief to turn and lock eyes with Louise.
