Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

1) That is difficult to say; you are good at making likeable characters; but if I had to choose, it would be... arrrgh!
Una.
Because she is what I rarely see, an actual child; happy and bubbly and curious... and childish. Just like a nine-year-old girl should be.

2) All things considered... I really do not find any character I dislike, at least among those that appeared for longer than one scene.
I guess it is whoever was in charge of the initial hunt for Cerys... because, again, I do not understand how anyone could think it a good idea to shoot at children. The other reason I do not like him is that all we know about him is based on a bad background roll.

3) Cerys is a good character; she stays true to who she is, but is ready to accept change and grow. Not sure if you do not make her seem a little too smart in realising things (the only example I have on hand is from the latest Update, where she realises Una is growing up without her from basically a single action). I rarely see such a relatable and likeable protagonist.

4) If you honestly want me to write this about everyone, I will still be sitting here tomorrow. What goes for Cerys goes for most of the others as well, they are well-written and, as Sinarblood showed us a long time ago, you have a wonderful grasp of what is going on beyond the surface we see; the subtle hints are there, revealing a deep character no matter who we look at. Even one-off characters like the scarred farmer have this.

5) Once I made my [Peace] with the fact it was actually a full AU, there was actually nothing about the Lore I could complain about.
What does bother me at times is the fact that personal success outside of battle depends on dice a lot even now... but I think we went over this several times in the past.
One thing though, I doubt people will catch a lot of those hints I talked about before; from previous discussions, I figured that you expect us to find at least most of them by reading each Update in detail... which really does not happen, so you should go at it expecting we do not notice many of those. Especially so when you go back to Updating daily; there is just no time to check so thoroughly.
One more thing is that Cerys often does things without ever explaining to the audience why she does it; which is fine for anyone but the PC. We should know her reasoning as we are in her head, not having to guess it. (For example, the stretching in front of Daiyu/Sabina the previous Update... you implied on Discord that she did it on purpose, but the Update itself does not really hint at the fact at all... or the reason she did it)

6) The characters for how much diversity and interesting interactions they have... and the worldbuilding for how much detail and work you put into it.

7) Well, as I said before, lower your expectations on us being able to catch subtle hints a little... and give us more of Cerys' reasoning.
(I also just remembered an Update where we had her experiment with her magic, which ended on a line about her having quite a few interesting ideas; we were never told what ideas she had, even though we ought to know what Cerys knows... if that makes sense.)

I'd have to say that Daiyu is my favorite so far. Her relentlessly cheerful nature and total devotion to her "battle sister" bring a smile to my face every time she's on screen.

I don't really have a least favorite character

Cerys is interesting. She starter in a place where the only thing she could really even afford to care about was Una, and while thst hasn't really gone away, seeing her open up to more and more people is heartening to see

Forest Bro was great, and Morgan has continued to grow on me ever since she was just a somewhat suspicious weirdo who slept on trees just because she could, but special menton must be made of Karen. Karen is interesting. She does a great job of being a somewhat mysterious source of exposition and is clearly doing her best to protect humanity, even when the hard decisions have to be made. I'm glad that she's the one facing the coming darkneas

Nothing really comes to mind. We're still in that place between the introduction ending and the plot picking up for real, so a lot of things are still just getting into place

I'd have to say the characters. As I said, the plot is only really just now getting started, and the mechanics are all borrowed

I feel like we've been forgetting about Morgan. Best Scout needs her time in the limelight too.

1 - Who is your favourite character and why?
I guess it has to be the main character Cerys. Her drive to make sure Una is safe above all else is touching but as the quest has been moving forward she's slowly expanded that determination to a select few. It shows that she's getting better from all that time on the run and with her parents. I like watching that progress being made.
2 - Who is your least favourite character and why
You're gonna hate me but... Morgan. I just don't see the appeal to her maybe it was her subtle word play to get us to follow her to London and have a choice but not really to accept the position from Karen. Also when she decided to tell Una a little bit about what happened at the concentration camp. I understand why she did it but mix that with my lukewarm opinion of her... it's not to say I actively dislike or hate her I just don't get thrilled when she's there.
3 - What do you think of Cerys? (Her personality, her growth, her reasoning
See mostly above. But also her personality of a child forced to grow up having moments to be a kid again are nice. I could perfectly imagine her first pumping after turning Karen off. She seems to be more of a squad leader then a general when it comes to planning, like her latest conversation with Karen it shows who is looking to the future while overlooking the present and who is living in the moment waiting for what comes next.
4 - What do you think of the other characters? (^)
I like the rest to one degree or another. Daiyu I definitely want to see more of but that's already going to happen. Though I will add her so far unflinching loyalty and dedication are impressive. The side characters we might not ever see again are still appreciated that you put work into them to make them distinct from one another. Pilot, the old executioner, etc

5 - What things bother you the most about the Quest? (A particular character, a piece of Lore, etc)
Gaia's mental push of who you like. I know it can be overcome and not set in stone and Cerys was already batting for the same team but simply didn't know it yet but I utterly despise mental manipulation of a person. I don't care for the reason or person who did it or how little it does.

It's. just. wrong.
6 - What's are your favourite things about the quest so far? (^)
From her overwhelming power against some enemies. RIP Dogo. To the cute moments between her and Una along with Daiyu.
7 - What do you think I can improve on? (Barring my current slow update rates, Holiday soon.
Forest Bro! I really want to explore the esoteric nature of your world, that connection we kinda explored with FB, things like the ship and it's spirit we visited and are about to again I think and Gaia.

Edit: Wait! Also detail. We miss this a lot. We missed the shrine maiden path because of this. Yes, there was a press of time but we simply were lost on that we could deepen the connection apparently. Don't treat us dumb but as the author things are blatantly obvious to you might never be seen by us.

1 - Maybe Morgan for being a girlbro overall and being just supportive of Cerys, even if she's a hair manipulative pushing her towards her own faction.

2 - I don't think enough characters have really been fleshed out for me to really dislike any of them. Mild dislike for Karen because I think Cerys is getting a bit exploited, I guess.

3 - I covered this in brief before, but even throwing out the art, I still don't really buy that Cerys is 13. Yes, half or so can be explained/justified by her lifestyle and needing to grow up faster because of Una, but I still get the feel from her as just being more 16ish than 13. Other than that, I guess I look forward to her hopefully moving on from a monofocus on Una to having more of a life of her own.

4 - I don't think anyone aside from Morgan, Cerys, and Una have really gotten enough development or screentime for me to say. Daiyu and her sister are a bit one note thus far and whatshername literally just showed up.

5 - I think the shift to England/extraction from America/Canada has been a bit jarring in terms of developments. It's perhaps more convenient if you know the area but I feel a little put off that all the magical girls are getting yoinked into this international org and based out of there.

And Morgan's character situation is a little weird. I don't dislike having her around, but based on her previous words about what she likes doing, shouldn't she be chafing to get back on the field and effectively offscreened?

My initial line of thinking was 'Where can you go on the American continent to get away from America?'
The answer is nowhere and I had a character from a magical organisation based in England right there.
The fact that I know England well helps, but I also considered the possibility that you would be based out of other countries, or just wander wherever you wanted.

I should probably give Morgan a POV swap chapter, she's kind of been neglected on account of you going places she cannot.
But yes, she's not exactly happy with being essentially locked inside the base, though she understands why.

Karen is pleased as a cat that she's managed to snag so many Magical Girls.
Cerys and Daiyu were kind of a joint package and while Sabina certainly isn't set to staying with the Clocktower, she just has nowhere else to go.

It is entirely possible that you would not have met Daiyu for a long time if the Chinese war hadn't gotten as bad as it has.
Or you might have been made to fight her, since if the Central Lotus was still a thing, they would have tried to grab her.
Speaking of which, I should probably do a POV on that too, everything is on fire

Una :D She is not looting :D

I like that she is obviously flawed ("Who's side will you fight for?" The response is instant, without thought. "My sisters.")
I pity anyone who actually manages to hurt Una.

4 - What do you think of the other characters? (^)
Your portrayal of Karen is very good. Showing both her pragmatism and that she tries to do better.

5 - What things bother you the most about the Quest? (A particular character, a piece of Lore, etc)
that we spend [Current Level] * 15 and not * 10 for everything. Makes math a little harder and is different from all the other CQMGQs.
Only a minor gripe though.

6 - What's are your favourite things about the quest so far? (^)
When we misunderstood the damage boosting effects of the Knights Aria and did way more damage with Juggernaut Wave than we thought we would :D (and then it still was barely enough xD)

You are already doing a very good job. And we are getting our Fluff now :D

My initial thoughts for this is because this Quest is going to span a long time if I have my way about it.

I could have just done * 10 and increased XP costs, but Hindsight is always 20-20.

Seriously when was this an option? And what would the benefits have been?

Alpha and Omega
Level 10
-I am the end of all things. Cerys can create a bubble of space that annihilates existence. Everything within 20 metres takes 69 damage every turn. Damage doubles every turn spent inside the barrier. Buffs and Debuffs are applied at 50% strength and only last one turn. Attacking Spells Magic Modifier must be higher than yours or it will be negated, otherwise they do 25% less damage. Effects everyone but Daiyu.
On a more up-beat note, have Humanity's ultimate weapon.

have a question that has been bugging me:
Since nukes don't have a Magic Modifier, does that mean we'll eat them with A&O? :D

A&O doesn't work instantly.
This is a case where the Soft Mechanics would come into effect.
That Nuke would smack you right about the face, with some reductions.

Nukes are not Spells, so A&O can not eat them at once.

If we find an inactive one, we can dissolve it easily... but one flying at us means we did something really, really, really wrong.
^

and @Naron, nukes are spells at least to some degree:
See, there it is. Soft mechanics would muck this up.

Plus, Obliterate would probably flip A&O off before blasting through it anyway, MM or not.

Now, If we brought it high enough to deal >1mil damage on turn one, we might be able to actually catch the blast and remain unscathed. But this would remain up to the QM after all.

Personally I think as nukes as a kind of specialty non-elemental spell, if that's a thing. Either that or a scientific Atom Spell.

If it's the latter, Atomic level magic/manipulation for Cercys when? :p

Here, have a direct quote from the source:
Magical Nukes and You
Or: How Humanity Stopped Worrying and Learned to Love Black Magic

Pretty much everything we had evolved a lot after Humanity discovered magic. Rituals that allowed people to almost instantly build high-quality structures in minutes with materials that would have originally been considered sub-standard, to increasing crop yields on farms by several orders of magnitude. And researchers are still discovering more and more uses for Magic practically by the day. As it is right now, the only real thing keeping the Akashic Pillar's economy from imploding, or hell, keeping their entire governmental body from spontaneously collapsing, is the fact Humanity is embroiled in the Eternal War in a Good vs Evil death match that is drawing everyone's attention away from the bigger problems.

But none of that really matter in this post.

The Nuclear Warhead, Humanity's ultimate "Fuck you in particular" weapon of mass destruction, initially didn't benefit all that much from magic... until someone got the bright idea to introduce ritual sacrifice into the mix.

The Answerer, and in turn the Brahmastra, were designed on the idea that what they functionally make are short-lived stars. Which, when it comes to magic, is all that matters. Despite being so tiny as to have lifespans measures in seconds, the Answerer and Brahmastra deploy what amounts to a quick-make magical circle while descending towards the target via a complicated Brand-Craft array.

When the Nuke detonates, the array waits for the new 'star' to hit it's stride before ritually killing it off early. Functionally doing a "Sacrifice of a New Born Baby, right out of the mother's womb" to fuel a ritual that outright annihilates everything within the designated target zone with enough power to blow through planet-level morality barriers. A fact that scares a lot of Gaia's would-be killers shitless.

FLUFF TWO: ATTACK OF THE FLUFF
Morgan POV

You raise an eyebrow at Cerys sudden statement. You aren't really that surprised that she decided now is the time for a break, she's been working hard for weeks, but you'll have to find time to remind her to run these decisions past you at least. Trying to organise some sort of workable schedule with the endless interruptions lately has been driving you mad, you should take the chance of relative peace to hammer something out with her, your previous schedule is basically irrelevant now.

She takes your musing silence as an agreement, turning her eyes to Sabina next, barely stopping on Daiyu who just nods. Hah, not that I expected much different. Cerys and Daiyu's relationship was... strange to say the least. The complete trust they seemed to have for each other and the comfortable skinship they seemed to share was just... odd. Not that there was anything wrong with it particularly, but when they met, they'd just clicked perfectly.

You push away the thoughts that always creep up onto you when you think about the Duo. Cerys is still my friend, she's just very busy. It's perfectly fine that Daiyu is so much better with her than me... Maybe if you repeat it enough times, you'll believe it too.

You let out a quiet sigh, making sure it goes unnoticed as you shuffle closer to your newest project. All it takes is a raised finger to coax Sabina from her playful sulking and she lets herself fall back against the sofa. "Yeah, fine, whatever." She clenches her fists and stretches her arms. "Where we going?

You resist the urge to sigh again. At least she's trying, kind of. You were pretty sure Sabina didn't want to do much of anything beyond learn magic, but at least she was trying to fit in properly, as awkward as her attempts were to you.

Cerys responds in that tone, sliding a pair of socks on as her voice sends tingles through you. "We're going shopping." That was... kind of out of character for her, she must have something planned. She continues with a softer voice. "Then we are going to visit the Belfast." Mmm? A little curious, but you'd find out sooner or later. Cerys slips a pair of combat boots on, new ones that you had slipped into her room, propping the door open before she turns back. "I need to deliver something to R&D, I'll be right back."

That makes your eyebrow raise again, but you don't say anything as you move to sit down next to Sabina. You'll find out whatever it is later, you had an idea to bounce off of James anyway.

Sabina turns a little awkwardly at your close presence on the sofa next to her, but doesn't say anything. At least she's stopped moving away from me now. You take control of the conversation without any real effort, Sabina isn't exactly easily manipulated, but given her recent shocks she seems a lot more malleable than you guess she normally would be. It's probably for the best that Cerys gave her some time to settle, even if it would be great if she was locked into the Clocktower. You promptly cut that line of thought short, before your mind wanders any further down paths it shouldn't.

"It's not that hard to affect sword or blades with magic, it will probably be easier for you, since your sword appears to be made of magic like Cerys." She tilts her head at your friends, name, obviously thinking hard about something.

"What magic does she use? Apart from her big thing." Mmm...

"She can control temperature somewhat, she uses that for fire and ice spells, apart from that she only has one other spell. A kind of binding spell." You see her tap her finger against her leg, digging the nail in slightly as a thought crosses her mind. Distraction go! "They both know how to fly." Her eyes flick back up to you. "I have no clue how they can fly, but they can. Maybe you can see if she can't teach you?"

You see her eyes flick down to her hand, where her sword was sitting in her palm and whenthefuckdidthatgetthere? You stifle your immediate reaction and watch her, she doesn't draw it, but you see her looking along the length and around her. Ok, ok... Just ignore that. "Thinking about using your sword in flight?"

She nods slowly, running a finger down the bladed side of the sheath. "Yes, I'm questioning how I would even use a sword while flying. It would be so much simpler to just stay on the ground, but flying gives you a lot of mobility..." Her words trail off her she begins delving into her thoughts, sooner or later, she would turn to you and ask every question that she could think of, she'd done it last night. Honestly, she's worse than Una is.

The door clicks open and Cerys steps through, looking perfectly ordinary. Nothing interesting happen then? She pats Una on the head as she skips over, shoes ready. "Will everyone be ready to go in fifteen minutes?" Nods all the way around, Cuifen was actually looking pretty exited now. She one of those shopping girls?

/LINE BREAK\

Ten minutes later, you set off. Cuifen rushed everyone onwards, smiling gleefully as she went. Definitely a shopping girl. You repress the urge to sigh before glancing over at Cerys. You are entirely unsurprised to find her quietly talking with Daiyu about something, apparently completely oblivious to the fact that they were just about leaning against each other as they walk. The sight of them garners some strange stares but most people mind their own business.

You look back to your own conversational partner, who was musing on something related to the validity of how you would fight in a skirt. Cuifen looks like your last bastion of sanity, before you see her scoop Una up, leg wobbling a bit before she steadies herself. She takes off skipping, pointing things out and letting Una explain them to her. Eeeeeeeeeee-

You promptly ignore the wide eyed look Sabina is giving you at nothing, you didn't make any noises, nope. Completely silent.

Stop looking at me like that, it's cute ok?

/LINE BREAK\

The only part of your group that needs new clothing is Sabina, not that you don't take the chance to look for something, and damn she is picky. Despite the fact that you insist that her transformation will store her clothes, she insists on finding something she can move freely in. You just about manage to steer her out of the boys section and towards the girls.

You nearly walk into her when she stops dead, staring to the side. You follow her eyes, landing on a short skirt, barely even upper thigh length. She snags the skirt and marches back towards the boys section. You follow her silently, curious about her choice, until she stops in front of a rack of shorts.

Oh no. You can practically feel the amused smile on Cerys face from here. Sabina is worse than she is. You step forwards to try and steer her towards more normal clothes, but she turns to you with pleading eyes, clearly practised a great deal in the past.

You sigh. "Fine." She smiles, peeling off towards the girls sections again, Cerys and her limpet following you with amused grins on their faces.

Her path through the sections confuses you, until she stops in front of a pair of long stockings, they would easily reach up under the skirt, as short as it was. What is she?

From behind, you hear Cerys take in a breath before speaking. "Are you trying to emulate your transformation?" The target of her scrutiny freezes, hand halfway towards the tights. She slowly pulls her hand back, not looking back as she lets out a quiet maybe. Cerys shares a look with Daiyu before turning back to Sabina. "There is nothing wrong with that, I like your transformed clothes. If you want, you should have Morgan look at them and custom order something." Daiyu whispers something in her ear and her lip quirks upwards. "Or, you could transform in a tailors and take it off, I'm sure she won't mind a better look."

This is new... but I approve. You watch as a flush of red creeps up Sabina's neck, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Aaaaand... "Well, I wouldn't mind." Bingo. The flush quickly spreads down into the t-shirt she's wearing and onto her face. And I thought Una was the teasing type, I suppose she must have gotten it from somewhere.

Sabina puffs up, pressing her cheeks together into a cute pout as she picks up the stockings. She takes only a few steps before she stops, staring down at the clothing in her hand. You can't see her face from this angle so you step to the side, catching a single tear rolling down her cheek before she rubs it away, shaking her head and clenching her fist.

You step next to her, gently clasping her fist and running a finger over it. "Do you need a minute?" She hesitates for second before shaking her head again, clearing her throat sharply and nodding at you.

"Sorry I just-" She stops as she stares down at her hand. She gently loosens her fist, letting the fabric slide through her fingers as you move hold her hand. "This-" She closes her eyes, biting her lip before she speaks. "The last time I spoke to my mother before she died was when we were shopping." She takes a long, steadying breath. "She kept trying to convince me to buy a pair of stockings, she said they would look great on me." Her mouth quirks to the side, a single tear escaping despite her best efforts. "I guess she was right after all."

You take a long breath before you speak, taking in her soft fragrance as you close your hand around hers. Mmm, she smells like sword oil. The thought comes out of nowhere, but it isn't wrong. Like oil and steel.

You catch sight of the other pair quietly stepping away, moving a little sombrely as they leave the two of you alone. You take the chance to step a little closer, wrapping your other arm around her shoulder and letting her set her face against your chest. God she's tiny. You lean down to her ear and whisper "You can cry if you want, you're safe here."

The tense lines of muscle in her back loosen somewhat as she pushes herself into your embrace. She doesn't cry, but you can feel her shake as she grips you tightly, enough that you use the tiniest lick of magic to stop her from crushing your hand.

Neither of you say anything for the longest time, but you occasionally see Cerys divert people away from your corner of the store and make a mental note that you really need to thank her later. How does Pasta Bolognaise for dinner sound? Extra ketchup.

Eventually, you feel her pull away from you, reluctantly letting go of her hand as she straightens up. She looks at the creased legging, still held in her hand and slowly nods. "Alright." She steps back from you. "I'm-" She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath. "Thank you."

You smile down at her with the gentlest smile you can muster, tenderly brushing a bang out of her face, where it stuck when she hugged you. "It's fine, I'll always be around if you want to talk, ok?" She nods at you as the two of you make your way to the front of the store, the others waiting for you outside once Sabina buys the clothing. I've got some spares I can give her, at least until we come back. She only actually bought those. Her forgetfulness here was entirely excusable.

Cerys nods at you as you walk outside, Una firmly seated on her shoulders, Cuifen tiredly leaning against a bannister nearby. She wear you out huh? "We're ready to go to the Belfast, we were planning on eating at..." She turns her head upwards to Una, who looks down at you with a wide smile. "Home! I want your food!"

You smile back at her and nod, taking in the bag of books dangling from Cerys hand. When did you have time for that I wonder? Cuifen maybe.

If I had to speak on things, I'd say that points that Naron brought up in his post are either what I would have said, or what I would have missed anyway.

Except points 5 and 7.
The thing that does bother me is the... lack of a functional explanation on how we actually train and upgrade our skills. The extent of what training does for us, at what cost, and to what extent. I have to make guesses based on what is shown in-story, and it's not a "Comprehensive Guide to Training" by far.

Similarly, despite the salt of another quest I'm following, Magical Girl Escalation Taylor, the habit of the author to post After Action Reports (AARs) that list the opportunities we reached for, the ones we could have reached for, and the state of the world in general is something I'd have appreciated.

Finally, the fact there are Q&As, but I have to make a trawl through the thread to find them all. Again, compilations would have been wonderful.

4) If you honestly want me to write this about everyone, I will still be sitting here tomorrow. Even one-off characters like the scarred farmer have this.

What is it about Sinarblood?
On the front page you have the guide on how to spend xp.
Training skills and abilities in story has remained the same for a long time.

AAR's aren't my kind of thing.

Read 'Naron's Intel' in the informational tab.
He keeps track of all of the Q&A's there for you, links included.

Sinarblood wrote wonderful analysis's of my Quest and was a generally great Quester here. You might want to 'sort by' and read some of his posts earlier in the thread. (He also has a post in the Informational tab)

I see; so Morgan feels left out... ugh, it is difficult to handle several good friends at the same time, especially with all the other things going on.
What I do notice is that no one seems to have had any need for beachware; interesting, they all have swimsuits already?

Besides, it is pretty touching to see Cerys from an outside perspective for once; she is rather considerate.

You are...
[] Morgan
[] Cerys
[] Daiyu
[] Cuifen
[] Una
[] HMS Belfast

One of those is different from the others...

Still, we are always Cerys and we just had Morgan...
Any of the other three girls would be interesting, but... I am with veekie on this one.

[X] Una

It has been ages since we got her POV.
