Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Hm... I doubt that Daiyu needs the day, but Cerys probably does. Besides, it says that she has to spent at least one weak training, not that she should run off the moment she is allowed to.

I will wait for some more input on the matter, though... would like to hear more opinions on the matter.
And I have to think about what else to do...

You could always have it happen after a successful mission or two, it's not like this is going to push Cerys beyond her limits, just go back and see everything thrown her way and despite it she still keeps moving. See it as a party after a job well done. Daiyu wants to get out there and fight beside Cerys, I don't think keeping her held back when she's ready is the greatest thing.

You make a good point there.
Okay... second version, filing away the Sunday events for later. It will be funnier once summer actually starts, anyway.

[X] Saturday: Military Cross Training, with Daiyu
-[X] Before you go, have a few words with Cuifen... even when it will be awkward again, this has to be done
--[X] Tell her you can guess how she feels... you know what you would feel if Una was the one heading out
--[X] You can't make any promises... but you will try your best to make sure Daiyu always comes home
-[X] Talk to Daiyu on the way; you really do not know much about her

[X] Sunday: Hunt Powerful Magical Creatures
-[X] Do Not fear The Dark - Check the Concentration Camp is clear.

[X]EXP Plan: Best Sword
-[X] Infinity Edge: Limitless
-[X] Infinity Edge: Levitate

The camp feels too much like a loose end and I really do not want anything that might have survived there to escalate.
Plus, maybe this helps Cerys come to terms with what almost happened... and it should make for a good start, seeing that we at least know what the ghosts are capable of now, should any be left.
(It also makes for a good way to write the next Update: Focus on Saturday's events, with the girls heading out on Sunday... and a stop there for us to make another plan.)
Besides, is that a Dark Souls reference I see in that quest-title?
Yes, I am calling these things quests now; what else would they be, seeing that each even has its own name? Mind the lower case q, not to mistake for this Quest as a whole.

Current vote, will lock it in 20 minutes.

SOUL
The Legends could wait, they weren't going anywhere, probably. The idea of training with the military was interesting, it would probably help a lot if you fought alongside them in the future. Besides, maybe they had some tricks they could teach you? You nod to yourself as you set out, Una trailing along behind you as you knock on Daiyu's door. This was probably the more important thing to be doing right now.

She opens it quickly, excitedly waving you in with a smile and slightly less broken English. Her sister is lying on the sofa, reading something. When you step fully into the room, you notice that there isn't an empty space in her blankets any more. A second look lets you notice that there are two sets of toes poking out from under the blanket. She catches your glance and actually smiles at you. "I must thank you for bringing us here, your people kept promise. I cannot yet walk, but I have leg back."

Daiyu is beaming at you from over her sisters shoulder, gently brushing her hair as you blink. "Uhh, you're welcome. It's good to see that they could help you, when did they operate?" How did you miss this?

Her smile stretches a little wider. "They bring little creature here earlier today, she do long work, then leg comes back." You see the toes on her new leg wiggle very slightly. "She say walk will come with time, eventually will be back to having never lost." This is excellent news and apparently she feels the same, the smile on her face hasn't dimmed in the slightest, and Daiyu is practically dancing around her in excitement. You actually feel a little bad that you were going to ask if Daiyu wants to go with you now..

Still, you shake your head and smile. "That's amazing, I'm really glad that it worked out well." Not that you expected Karen to break her end of the bargain, but restoring a leg had maybe seemed a little out of her league. Apparently not. Daiyu wanders off to tend to the food they had on, Una trailing along as they chatter. Still, you take the chance to sit down in a chair next to her, leaning over a little to make sure your conversation isn't overheard. "Are you really ok? Beyond the leg, about this whole thing?"

~Soundtrack~

Her smile dims slightly as she looks at you, shaking her head. "For my sister to fight, to die in battle for another without me?" She clenches her fists into her blanket. "No, am not ok with this." She lets out a resigned sigh. "But, world does not work that way. Daiyu will fight, because it is who she is. I cannot follow after her where she goes, so I must make myself her anchor." She give you a softer look. "You speak because of sister yes? You worry for her, but you must go to fight, and maybe you not come back?"

You nod reluctantly, fingers fidgeting in your lap and she smiles gently at you. "Promise to come back cannot be made, for it will be broken, death is inevitability of all things. But promise to stay together until the end? To fight and claw until you drag death itself with you?" Her face hardens as she narrows her eyes at you. "Yes, this is promise you will keep."

You both sit in silence for a moment, before your sisters comes back, barging through the room with wide smiles. Daiyu settles down at her sisters side, her face perfectly normal and voice cheery again. You lean back in your seat, feeling your spine uncoil as you gently rest a hand against your sisters back as she snuggles against your chest.

You feel your heart, beating in a strong rhythm, unceasing in its movements. You look up, seeing Daiyu's delighted face as Cuifen gently toys with a stay lock of her hair. You look down, seeing Una's smiling face as her heart beats with yours.

Yes, for these moments of eternity, this is what I will die for.

Do Not Fear The Dark
You eventually manage to ask Daiyu about the training trip, and after a lengthy conversation with her sister, she gives you an agreement. You stay for a while longer, letting the sisters finish their meal, some sort of broth. When they are done, Daiyu hugs her sister before moving to follow you. When you leave the room, you look down to your sister, who was currently sticking as close to you as she could. You couldn't find it in yourself to make her stay, so you let her come with you.

Her smile was practically blinding.

/LINE BREAK\

The car ride was long, giving you the perfect opportunity to spark up conversation with Daiyu. You fumble with the choice of topics for a while, before settling on something simple. "Hey Daiyu?" She turns her head away from the window to look at you. "What do you do when you aren't training?"

She perks at as Una begins listening intently. "I practice with sword, or read books." She nods before stopping, nodding even faster. "I found book on living magic legends! There are many spectacular beasts, Temple Monks were right about many." She vibrates a little in her seat. "Wish to see one, think time could be made to?"

You scratch your arm as you think about it, you were planning on taking her with you when you went back to that place tomorrow, but after that you didn't have anything planned. "I think we could probably arrange something, maybe Morgan knows one we can visit?"

She beams at you and goes back to staring out the window, humming a little tune under hear breath.

An excruciatingly long car ride later and you were waved through the gate, soldiers sending your blacked out windows a curious glance before going back to what they were doing.Una was practically bouncing in her seat as she frantically try to look at everything. Daiyu was a little more restrained, but you could still see her eyes practically glowing as you pass a Jet moving along the runway. Your car pulls to a stop near a building, it is smaller than the enormous hangers around you, but it is still gigantic.

When you all step out, the people around you give you strange looks, but are apparently disciplined enough not to make a scene. The door to the large building opens and a large man steps out, he quickly walks over to the three of you, nodding at you before speaking. "Thank you for coming, if you would please follow me this way, a training room has been set aside for you." He waits for you to nod back before spinning on the spot and walking back towards the building.

When you enter you look around, it is mostly bare, but the paint looks new. Actually, the entire building looks new. You pull Una's hand away from a particularly shiny metal thingy sitting on the wall, moving through two more corridors, before you enter into a large room.

There are several groups of people waiting for you, they all quickly shuffle into a line as you enter and salute your guide. He gives them a curt nod before turning to you. "These are going to be your partners for today, the Lieutenant here." A shorter tanned man steps forwards. "Is going to be in charge for the duration of your visit. You may direct any questions to him, and while you are not required to follow orders, it would be for the best if you could comply with any guidelines he discusses with you." He steps back, the soldiers relaxing from their salute. "Any questions?"

You cut off your sister with a hand over her mouth before she can begin spouting every question under the sun, and shake your head. "No, I have no disagreements with anything you have said." The man nods and quickly leaves the room, the door closing behind him with a quiet thud. You turn to look at the Lieutenant as he steps forwards, dipping his head to you in greeting.

"Hello Miss, my name is Oliver Sadana, I will be the PT leader today." He steps back and waves a hand behind him. "For the duration of today, the identities of the twelve people behind me will be designated Knight one to Knight twelve. The numbers each designate a specific job. Knight one to six are riflemen carrying a standard loadout, Knight seven will be carrying a machine gun, Knight eight will be carrying engineering and Anti-Air or Anti-Armour gear. Knight nine and ten are both medics, carrying a standard loadout. Knight eleven and twelve are a sniper and their spotter."

You are slightly impressed he managed to get that out all in one breath, but you make sure to mentally note the roles.

Knight 1-6 - Riflemen
Knight 7 - Machine Gun
Knight 8 - Engineer & Anti-Air/Armour
Knight 9-10 - Medics
Knight 11-12 - Sniper and Spotter

He continues speaking after giving you the time to take it in. "For today, we will be running basic exercises and if they go well, manoeuvrers. Do you have any questions?"

You speak again before your sister can. "Firstly, my sister will not be taking part." You give her a long look until she backs down. "Secondly, would you please elaborate on what exactly we are doing."

He nods. "Basic exercises will be done to see how fit you are, manoeuvrers are the entire squad moving through a course as a team. We will not be using live rounds during any exercises, but they are designed for you to be... transformed." He stumbles a little when he mentions your transformation, but his recovery is excellent, you can barely even catch a hint of doubt on his face, or the soldiers behind him. Well, we can't have that now can we?

You share a look with Daiyu and you both flare your magic in Sync, armour flaring into existence around the two of you.

The soldiers flinch, reaching for non existent weapons before they calm down, staring at the lingering lines of flame running along your armour. You let the fire fade a moment later and satisfied that they are convinced, your armour dispersing into a gentle cloud of fire.

You give the Lieutenant a moment to gather his wits as he clears his throat, nodding at you as he steps back. "Right then. We'll just uh, start with basic exercises now then."

/LINE BREAK\

You sit down, panting slightly, Daiyu a lot more than you. The soldiers had put you through the grinder, but it wasn't much worse than your daily torture in the Gym. Daiyu hadn't had the time to acclimatise like you had, the wincing she was making was well deserved. The soldiers were also looking a little tired, but also fairly used to it, which made sense.

When you had gathered your breath, you made your way to your feet as the Lieutenant writes something down. "Next thing is manoeuvrers then?"

He looks up, nodding at your words and calling back to the other soldiers. "All right you lot, get your gear loaded, we're going out to Course 8." They silently go about collecting the few things they had on hand, walking out of the door as the Lieutenant guides you after them. Once you arrive, you enter a large domed area, where a massive space awaits. There is literally a street in here, a road, buildings and even cars.

You chat quietly to Daiyu as you see people going through the street, inspecting things. "Impressive yeah?"

She nods, starting to regain a little of her exited bounciness as she speaks. "Yes! Is very impressive course, expensive."

You smile, but your conversation is interrupted by the Lieutenant coming back to you and nodding. "Everything is set up, this scenario is a sweep and clear. You enter the street from here and move through it, clearing out any targets you find." He hold up a picture, showing a man wearing camo and armour different to your allies. "Your targets will look like this, any questions?"

His answers are awfully lacking in detail, but you feel that there is probably a reason for that, some sort of test to how well you work with your team maybe? Whatever. You send Daiyu a look and she nods. You gently ruffle Una's hair as you go down the steps of your overlooking platform, the group of soldiers waiting for you at the bottom. They move behind you, so that the two of you are at the head of the group and you transform.

You look around, not seeing anything further in as you begin walking. Daiyu shifts slightly in front of you as you go, until suddenly there is a deafening bang of a gun and you see a paintball bounce off of her chestplate. You quickly jump to the side, rolling behind a small wall as Daiyu follows.

The soldiers behind you scatter, taking cover wherever they can and raise their weapons to fire at the building the shot had come from.

You stay crouched there, sharing a look with Daiyu before a thought comes to mind. Why am I hiding. I am bulletproof, and these are paintballs. No clue why it didn't burst though. You stand up, Daiyu following your lead as you gently float above the combat zone. Her flight was shaky enough that you gave her a hand, dragging her up with you faster. You float there, looking over the battlefield before a shot dinks off of your shoulder harmlessly. Still no clue why they aren't popping. Still, you catch a glimpse of the attacker and form a spear of ice, making sure your team can see it before you fire it at the wall.

You let it punch into the wall, being very careful not to hit the man inside, or the two people behind him. Honestly, you were trying to do this without cheating with your thermal sense, but it just made it so easy to find everyone. Fuck it, it's not cheating if you use what you've got right? You gently float down next to what the tag on his chest identifies as Knight 1, probably the leader. "Hey." He looks up at you, standing out in the open spotless, a little incredulously.

"I know where they all are, can you co-ordinate to get them?" He nods quickly and waits for you to speak. "Three guys on the second floor there, one on the roof behind us, five in the garage over there and two guys in the house to your right." You move over and tear an enormous hole in the wall with your bare hands, a quick pulse of reinforcement letting you punch through the weak plaster to grab the two inside. You make sure not to hurt them as you pull them through the wall, leaving them dangling from your arms as Knight 1 looks up at you even more confused.

He quickly gets over his shock and speaks through the radio on his head, the other soldiers quickly focusing down the buildings you had specified. Paint splattered enemies dropping to the ground, fake dead, while the Machine Gun roars loudly next to you. How is that so loud with paintballs? Do they have some sort of special attachment that does that?

You and Daiyu kind of just stand there and watch the last man frantically hunker down behind his cover. It lasts until someone throws a grenade, a brief flash of heat spraying him with paint head to toe. He drops to the ground, playing dead until a voice comes out over an intercom. "Alright, that's everything clear, well done."

/LINE BREAK\

You ran through the course twice more, each going much the same as the first because you immediately pointed out where everyone was. You didn't break any more walls, but you didn't actually get to do much. All of your spells were lethal or would demolish the entire street, and everyone on it. I need to create some way of non-lethally fighting, this is a little stupid. You mostly just stood there in the open, idly chatting with Daiyu as the occasional paintball bounces harmlessly off of you. Need to figure that out too.

You parted with the team when the sun started setting, waving once to them before you left.

/LINE BREAK\

You drop from the plane, Daiyu falling alongside you as you stare down at the dark countryside beneath you. You fall quickly, reaching terminal velocity in seconds. When you get close, you slow yourself down, lending Daiyu a hand as the two of your float quietly over the camp.

You frown as you stretch out your sense. Nothing at all, not even rodents... You close your eyes with a sigh, reluctantly turning to look at Daiyu. "They are still here."

Secondly, would you please extrapolate on what exactly we are doing
Elaborate.

Elaborate is to give additional details. Extrapolate is to take data that you have and "extend" it outwards by assuming that the patterns in the current data keeps holding. E.g. If I had one cookie Monday, two cookies Tuesday, and three cookies Wednesday, we can extrapolate that I will have four cookies Thursday.

Hmmm was hoping for more on military training.
I know we're a range unit that rely on magic and sword for close range but why not focus on melee skills?
As great the sword is and that we can blast everyone off with our Aura I feel like we're worst off in a confusing close quarters scuffle where the sword is less effective due to a lack of momentum and with our allies all around us the Aura is out. Sure the sword can burn them but its slower and our allies don't have a lot of time in this kind of fight.

Would it be better to learn close quarters combat training out of MG form so the soldiers can better teach how to get out of this kind of situation and we don't break their bodies or its better that using the MG form would offer better understanding of our limitations and any injuries suffered by the soldiers can be healed?

Hmmmm... I say we use our Thermal Control to burn down a small section of the camp at a time. While we're burning them and making sure the fire doesn't spread, Daiyu will be defending us to make sure we're not interrupted.

biggest thing is that we need to not get caught in close quarters again, because fuck

drawing them out seems like the best option, but I haven't the foggiest how to go about actually doing it

Original - Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns | Page 190
here is a link to our enemy profile.
last time we went in, they always attacked the first in line (us).
using alpha and omega will render their only spell useless against us. let's keep a shell of that active around us, so the 15% auto kill does not screw us over.

Daiyu is immune to their spell, because of Heart of Steel.

Daiyu also takes almost no damage from them. Likely only in the single digits, which she'll easily heal.

If Daiyu can keep her protective spell on us, we can also reduce the Skull Wraiths damage a lot.

450 (SW base damage) - 67 (Ignition Aura) - 192 ( Knights Shield) - 106 (Base Resilience) = 85

Though Alpha and Omega may cost us part of the Knights Shield. Then it'd only be

450 (SW base damage) - 67 (Ignition Aura) - 96 ( Knights Shield) - 106 (Base Resilience) = 181

still, not risking the 15% instakill spell is likely worth it.

Also, they must sense living things somehow.
They got rid of ALL living things in the area, not only some - ALL.
let's check if we can lure them with localized heat sources?

Knight 1-6 - Riflemen
Knight 7 - Machine Gun
Knight 8 - Engineer & Anti-Air/Armour
Knight 9-10 - Medics
Knight 11-12 - Sniper and Spotter
Some thoughts:
- Missing one or more grenadiers, someone with an underslung or carried 40mm grenade launcher. Might just be rolled in with the Riflemen.
- Should really have one SAW/Minimi/5.56mm bullet hose per fire-team (~4 people), in this case probably two if you don't want the command element to have one. If the MG is shooting anything bigger than NATO 5.56mm (next size up is 7.62mm), they should really have an assistant gunner or ammo bearer. Standard load for an MG is 800+ rounds, and that much 7.62mm is farking heavy.
-
While an attached engineer is somewhat useful, there is very little reason to make them the designated AT/AA bearer. Stinger MANPADS (MAN Portable Aerial Denial System) are practically point and shoot, albeit highly unlikely to work against flying biologicals that aren't running absurdly hot, so they can be distributed to pretty much anyone and used as reliably as possible. The same is true of one-shot AT rockets like the LAW or British equivalent. Those aside, there are no AA or AT systems that are single-operator, man-portable that I can think of, short of satchel charges or AT grenades which are either ad-hoc weapons or no longer in regular service. Maybe Javelins, if they were in service by then, but even those pretty much need a two person team to carry the control unit and ammunition. An engineer attached to an infantry unit is more likely to serve in a demolitions or ordnance disposal role.
- Two medics is a bit heavy on medical expertise for such a small unit, as the more common breakdown is one medic per platoon (~30-50 people), although that is in addition to all soldiers being trained in field first aid and possibly as Combat Lifesavers or equivalent. Given this is quasi-special forces, having two medics attached to the command element may be more reasonable.
- A Sniper/Spotter pair is likely a poor decision and overkill, unless the sniper is toting a heavy anti-material rifle or expected to separate from the unit and make long-distance shots. Most small-units that aren't full-on Sniper/Scout elements will have a Squad Designated Marksman or equivalent, with a modified standard loadout to add sights and improved accuracy to a standard rifle, or an actual battle rifle and scope, since they will be engaging with the rest of their unit and thus generally at 300m or less. Having the spotter is redundant unless the Sniper/Spotter team are going to be on their own and the sniper is going to be tunnel-visioned down his scope.
- You're missing a Radioman or Commo specialist, which is more important if the squad is expected to be deployed for detached operations or otherwise outside easy signal range of supporting elements. If they aren't going to be outside of short-ranged headset comms range, it's a moot issue, but I can't think of any handhelds that have a range of more than a few kilometers.

Common force breakdown for a twelve-man element might be something like this:
Team One: Team Leader (Rifleman), SAW, Grenadier, Rifleman
Team Two: Team Leader (Rifleman), SAW, Grenadier, Rifleman
Team Three (Command): Squad Leader (Rifleman), Medic, Radioman, Rifleman

Keep in mind these are largely from a US Armed Forces perspective, there may be differences in the way the UK organizes things, and it is technically possible that they are discarding accepted doctrine to try some kind of experimental organization or the like.

Just shine a light on them if they get hit by the light they are dead.

This was such a waste of time. Hopefully we will not be fighting humans much and if we were we would deal with them even easier than we did today. Thermal control freeze them all. Humans don't come with magic resistance.

Unless, y'know, Cerys has to intervene somewhere like China for some reason.
