Yefimovich survival roll 1d10 (DC 3)= 1
Knowledge is power Re-roll: 6

Grigori Yefimovich smiles as the Thunderhawk enters the Fortress-Monastery landing pad, the hangar closing behind them and initiating decontamination procedures to filter out the Mist that has entered in that time. Finally, does he return home after leaving it so long ago. It is not like he does not treasure his time in the Deathwatch, for not only his powers would have caused great damage to himself and others if he had not received the proper training, but he had served the Imperium greatly beside stalwart cousins, one of which seats in front of him.

"I am grateful that you have chosen to accompany me home, mentor." Says Grigori. "I know that you have much more important duties to attend to."

"It is no inconvenience for me to do so Grigori." Epistolary Joshua replies, a faint smile blooming beneath his psychic hood. "Besides, it would have been negligent of me as your instructor not to teach you as much as possible, and the journey from Sapris to here has been useful in that regard."

It had been. While the older Librarian had taught Grigori much of the Warp in these last twenty years, he's aware that he has not told him everything he knew, so every lesson that Joshua was willing to share was treasured by the Luctusian greatly.

"I won´t argue that." Conceded Yefimovich with a grin of his own. "Still, I am surprised Watch Commander Affram has allowed you to depart for so long, with how much he values your assistance."

Joshua´s brow furrowed in confusion. "I thought you knew, my service in the Deathwatch is at its end, my Chapter requires my presence once more."

"For what reason, If I may inquire?" Ask Yefimovich worried. "I thought your service lasted for another two decades."

"Coincidentally, the same reason you return to your chapter." Answers the Valedictor. "The previous Chief Librarian has fallen in the line of duty, and out of the remaining Librarians of the Chapter I am the most knowledgeable and experienced."

"You have both my condolences and congratulations, Mentor." Joshua waves his hand modestly.

"Thanks Grigori, Master Lot was a good friend of mine, I do hope that I can live up to his example." The older Librarian tone is nostalgic as he speaks.

"I´m sure that the Valedictors will benefit greatly of your wisdom, for your might and knowledge are beyond question." Assures him Yefimovich. "You´ll be a worthy Chief Librarian, most assuredly far beyond my own tenure."

In reaction to his pupil self-deprecating words, Joshua unbuckles the restraints of his seat, before standing up and placing a hand on the Mist Shrikes pauldron. "If you value my wisdom so much, take heed of these words. In the past two decades I´ve seen you grow into a loyal servant to the Imperium, a skilled psyker and a thoughtful and prudent marine. You sharing my position in your own chapter is far from a disservice for it. It is something for your brothers to be proud of, for you are wise beyond your years and skilled beyond doubt. I firmly believe that you will bring far more honor to the position that you´ll bring shame, and that many worthy deeds shall be accomplished by your hands. Doubt is the greatest weakness, Grigori, and there is no reason for your hearts to be filled by it."

He returns to his sit then, and the rest of the decontamination procedure is without words, the luctusian touched by his mentor's words. When the control room finally transmits the all clear signal, Grigori stands up and makes the sign of the Aquila.

"Goodbye Master Joshua. Thank you for everything, and I hope that we see each other once more."

Joshua returns the salute. "It was a delight to be your instructor Grigori, and I do share that hope."

With those parting words Grigori descends from the Thunderhawk and makes its way out of the landing pad. As he passes the blast door, which closes immediately behind him, Grigori takes note that the whole Chapter Command is right there to welcome him. Most of them are the same officers that sent him off twenty years ago, except there is a Master of Sanctity now and the captain of the 10th is a different marine, another terran seeing as the officer looks roughly as old as his predecessor. All of their heads are bare, allowing him to see their expressions, which are solemn except for the Captain of the 3rd, who is grinning at him. Their thoughts flash briefly in Grigori´s mind, and though he chooses not to read them, as it would be discourteous of him to do so, he does feel a lot of expectations and wary judgment. He doesn´t begrudge it, as Joshua has hammered in his training that the wariness towards psykers is warranted, and that from the moment their abilities awaken the struggle for control is never ending.

Chapter Master Severus takes a step forward, and although there are a few more gray hairs in his hair and beard his posture is strong and his gaze strong as he looks straight into his eyes. Grigori perceives the core of his identity in his mind, a bulwark of constant dutiful determination, ever present in each of his thoughts.

"Grigori Yefimovich. Two decades ago we sent you to the Deathwatch to master your powers and attain experience for your future role. The reports that Epistolary Joshua and Watch-Commander Affram have forwarded to us speak greatly of your skill, dedication and character, telling us of great deeds achieved against multiple xenos in these years." Severus' face is stern and his words dispassionate, and Grigori resists the temptation of reading into his thoughts. "It is their opinion that you are ready to assume the position of Chief Librarian and I concur." His expression softens and his voice warms as he extends he grasps Grigori´s forearm in a warriors handshake. "Welcome home brother."

The younger marine returns the handshake, his voice thickening with emotion. "It is good to be back, Chapter Master. I will not fail you."

"I'm certain you won´t." Behind him the rest of Chapter Commands salutes him before leaving, the only ones remaining being the Chapter Master and his honor guard at a respectful distance. "Before you´re shown the space set aside for the Librarium, we need to speak in private, for there is a great secret of the Chapter you must be told. Come with me."

Grigori follows the Chapter Master to his office, wondering what secret it might be as the Chapter Master's thoughts darken.

Falce Perception roll 5d10= 6, 7, 6, 8, 10= 6 successes, Critical Successes
3rd Company Marines Fellowship roll 4d10= 4, 2, 2, 8= 1 Success

Days later, Chief Librarian Yefimovich stands alongside the Chapter Master in his office, together with Falce, the Master of Sanctity, and Gallienus, the Captain of the 3rd. The revelation of their true origins had taken the Librarian by surprise, but he had not been shaken by it. The sins of their bloodline were dire, no mistake about it, but in the end it mattered not who their father was, for the other Mist Shrikes are still his brothers, and their loyalty is certain.

Of course, that didn´t meant that his brothers were beyond reproach or corruption as their current conversation attested.

"Are you sure you have found all of them?" Inquiries Severus, voice filled with restrained hatred.

Falce nods grimly, his plate splattered with transhuman blood. Gallienus does the same, his face lacking his usual relaxed smile. "We found the corruption on my men soon enough that they didn´t have time to spread their madness along. Only three devastators fell under the sway of the Tempter, and they only managed to corrupt a few serfs before we found them."

"I´ve inspected the minds of the rest of the company, including Captain Gallienus, with Master Falce´s supervision" Interjects Grigori. "The rest of our brothers are clean, none of them knew of the traitor´s nature. I´ve also taken the initiative of inspecting the 3rd Company barrack and all of the facilities the traitors made use of in the last year. There were a few tainted trinkets and cursed sigils, but Falce and myself have destroyed and cleansed them."

"Yefimovich initiative is to be commended." Praises Falce. "Still, I will redouble my efforts so that we can be assured that the foul touch of Chaos is completely cleansed from our chapter. Overconfidence is the wellspring of laxity, after all."

After the Master of Sanctity speaks, the door of the office opens slightly. "Chapter Master, a messenger has come from the Astropaths chambers. He says it's urgent." Speaks one of the Honor guard members posted outside, Garum if Yefimovich is not mistaken.

"Send him in." With the Chapter Master´s permission a serf burst into the room, skin red with exertion.

"Lezo is in open revolt, they request urgent assistance!!"

-Chief Librarian Grigori Yefimovich returns to the Chapter.
-3 marines slain, all corrupted marines purged.

DEPLOYMENTS.
Write-in how many squads you want to deploy in each assignment and from which Company, and with which vehicles and vessels. You don´t have to send troops to a deployment if you do not wish to.
Deployment Restrictions:
-1.Each Company Captain MUST be deployed with Squads of his Company.
-2.Your Master of the Fleet can be deployed with a vessel, but he will never land planetside.
-3.Your Chapter Champion and Honor Guard can only be deployed alongside your Chapter Master.
-4.Master of the Keep, Master of the Watch, Master of the Arsenal, Master of the Marches, Chief Victualer are non-deployable. Master of Recruits is only deployable with Nowalijki Squads.
-5.At least one Apothecary has to remain in the Fortress Monastery.
-6 Dreadnoughts have a Lucidity value that goes from 0 to 100. It starts at 100 when interred and it is reduced by a 2d20 each time they are deployed, recovering 3d10 when they are not. If the Lucidity value is lower than 30, the Dreadnought cannot be deployed until its Lucidty value rises above that number.
Deployments:

-[X] Uprising in Lezo: The mutants that Spatha prophesied and that Yefimovich has now confirmed as Genestealer Hybrids have risen up in a planetary scale revolt in Lezo. The fall of the Sector Capital would generate an untold amount of damage for the Sector and the Imperial Navy, so it cannot fall.
–[] Write-in Dispatch Force (Starts the Lezoan Uprising campaign):
-[] Knives in the Void:
After a period where Eldar Raiders were surprisingly absent, Eldar raiders have returned to the Aetelian Sector, this time striking in Zatloczony Tertius. Show them they were wise in steering clear of the Sector.
–[] Write-in Dispatch Force:
-[] Seibourc Clean-up:
Even with the execution of the previous warboss, the greenskins stranded in Seibourc stubbornly resist their annihilation. Quell their resistance once and for all.
–[] Write-in Dispatch Force:
-[] Uprising in Faisal:
The King of Faisal has declared himself in response to the Imperium. While the cities have risen in his support, in rural areas a loyalist counter-revolution is firmly opposing the rebel royal and the PDF.
–[] Write-in Dispatch Force:
-[] Pirate Hunt IV:
An Imperial navy fleet under the command of Giscon Adherbal has located the base of a pirate group subordinated to the Eyes of the Mutator. With the possibility of finally obtaining information on the Traitors Astartes homeworld, the Admiral is calling for your assistance.
–[] Write-in Dispatch Force:
-[] Of the First and Fifteenth:
The Angels Crusader have apparently chased off a warband of the Thousand Sons out of the Galilean Sector and into the Aetelian Sector. While they do not need your help in putting down the fleeing sons of Magnus the Red, it wouldn´t hurt to have more marines
–[] Write-in Dispatch Force:

Q.M notes: Various things to comment now. First of all, we´ve gotta celebrate that we´ve surpassed the 100 pages🎊🎊. Thanks you all for your votes, comments and readying this story. Without you this quest woudn´t exist.

Secondly, I also appreciate the feedback you have given me on the space combat system. I´ll take all your suggestions into account for reworking for the third (and hopefully last) time.

Finally, the planet for the next episode of the Guide will be by popular demand Caroleus. It will drop this evening.

EDIT: Forgot to put in the chapter Yefimovich survival rolls, now they are there.

Initial thoughts:

-Mk-VI 'Corvus' Power Armor: 10BP/Suit
Advantages: Light (+1 Agility)
Disadvantages: Light (-1 Armor)
Statline: Armor 2, +1 Agility
I believe we should start producing the regular MK-IV Corvus PA every turn and slowly equip every company with it, replacing the MK-VII.

It streamlines logistics and plays to our strengths. It's also a lot easier to produce than the Prototype model, which I would reserve for Hero Units, Company officers and the future First Company. (for now)

Add the
-Cameleoline Cloak: 5BP/Cloak
Statline: +1 Agility

And you give the standard Marine +2 Agility. Extremely good for stealth and quick actions and reactions. It would be a long term project, but helpful imo.

Hm... I'm tempted to throw everything and the kitchen sink at this.

Certainly the most important engagement, so it will need appropriate forces. Maybe we will ignore one or two of the others to give this the necessary attention.

-[] Knives in the Void: After a period where Eldar Raiders were surprisingly absent, Eldar raiders have returned to the Aetelian Sector, this time striking in Zatloczony Tertius. Show them they were wise in steering clear of the Sector.
This is annoying. It's a second fleet action that we simply don't have the ships to deal with right now. I think we should leave out this and focus on helping the Admiral.

-[] Seibourc Clean-up: Even with the execution of the previous warboss, the greenskins stranded in Seibourc stubbornly resist their annihilation. Quell their resistance once and for all.
We can ignore this. Worst case we move in next turn and stomp them dead.

-[] Pirate Hunt IV: An Imperial navy fleet under the command of Giscon Adherbal has located the base of a pirate group subordinated to the Eyes of the Mutator. With the possibility of finally obtaining information on the Traitors Astartes homeworld, the Admiral is calling for your assistance.
Either this or the Eldar. Currently favoring this since we actually get support. Less risk of losing something.

-[] Of the First and Fifteenth: The Angels Crusader have apparently chased off a warband of the Thousand Sons out of the Galilean Sector and into the Aetelian Sector. While they do not need your help in putting down the fleeing sons of Magnus the Red, it wouldn´t hurt to have more marines
Optional imo.

Might help setting up relations with them, but the first is weird. Thousand Sons give opportunities though. I don't think it's truly threatening though.

All in all I believe focusing on two or three important engagements would serve us more this turn. This has to do with the fact that we are down a ship and haven't decided on any of the two Forge Worlds. I've seen a lot of people favoring the "inventors", but I believe the traditionalists are the better choice.

They have more production and the ability to not just repair, but construct ships in large numbers. It would give us a surefire way to get escorts. Quite honestly I say we pick one, favor them and then let them subsume/take over the other faction. The inventor guys could be good once Cawl comes around, but that's centuries away. Not to mention that we haven't yet seen any actual advantages to their tinkering.

Anything truly special we can do ourselves. Shrug

I disagree. We are already extremly ill-equipped for Zone Mortalis operations. Hyperspecilasation equals overspecialisation.
Maybe.

The fact that we don't even have a single one, but a complete Company dedicated to scouting tells its own story and giving them specialized equipment is the best course of action.

Also, we have the MK-VII as a standard armor.

Armor:
-MK.VII "Aquilla" Power Armor
-95 Prototype MK.VI "Corvus" Power Armor

And, as far as I understand it, can technically equip every Marine with it. Since we have them equipped passively I would still produce the MK-VI Armor and have them ready for when we actually need them. Enough to equip several companies at least. Preferably the entire chapter for when we are dedicating ourselves to our primary role and have other force elements like the Guard or other Chapters operating more directly. Or have enough on stock to make repairs not immediately necessary.

Whoa, our Marines are corrupted already ?!! What the hell!! Time to get more Chaplains.

Since we are an inquisition aligned chapter, maybe we could borrow the mind wipe tech that the inquisition loves to use. We have a legitimate use for it with our homeworld tainted by Chaos and Mutator dudes running around.

Yeah doing the math the chapter only been up and running for 31 years. But oh well that the problem with young marines if the shitton of space marines novels have taught me anything.

You can, if you spend BP in the repairs and contact the Mechanicus to buy the escorts, or if you contact the Mechanicus for both things.

I´m still thinking about what actions to place for the Chief Librarian, if any, and the same goes for the Master of the Keep. Also, due to how the initial vote for chapter organization went, Domitian is not the second in command in the chapter.
I know. Hopefully we will get some more details about how they got corrupted and what we can do to avoid a repeat of it in future.
The 3rd Company failed a willpower roll to resist corruption during the previous turn.

Honestly, I like everything about the plan, except for the fact that we are leaving a warband of the thousand sons alone. Considering we already have one warband of Tzeench worshippers already, having two into the mix really doesnt fill me with confidence.
(And I bet its the warband led by that Exaltant Thousand son character that survived. Which really makes me want to go after them in the first place in order to put them down into the damn dirt for that alone.)
