RATIONALE
Make it look like you got a message on your phone, and then typed out a reply.

As far as I can tell, there is zero reason to keep this question secret. She has no affection for Blampires or having them set up nearby, and the more information she can give, the more likely she might get it dealt with.

We dont need to tell her where we heard about it, just that we did.
I mean, she literally just had a demon, a hell-queen and a death-god's daughter walk into her club in company of a wizard.
She would expect that we have some independent sources of information.

I will repeat: Arlene Ghorbani and Ken Mayeda are both directly touched by Ishtar.
Its on the original character sheet that they were generated with in the DFRPG system.
I checked; they are both Marked by Power.

It doesnt make them scions or superheroes. It doesnt make them Fae Knights or whatever.
But it carries certain Implications on its own, narratively and thematically, in addition to what mechanical effects it may have.
We're just going to have to see. Though to my mind having the marking or touch of a god upon you does not in any way guarantee you any level of assistance and in fact might be a guarantee of Enmity.

The favor of a god can take on different forms, or have different levels depending on location, timing or even mood.
But even the smallest is still the attention of an immortal with the ability to dispense power and information.
Nevermind one on the scale of Ishtar.

Canon!Ghorbani was literally a sex trafficked woman who prayed to Ishtar when she was grabbed in Iran and got first the power to wreck her traffickers, then to escape Iran, become both independently wealthy, move to Las Vegas and become the leader of Ishtar's cult as well as the founder of a paramilitary group of hitters to serve as its fist.

Meantime, canon!Mayeda's....some have used the term sacred prostitute to describe him, whether accurate or not, but his clients dont talk. Regardless, he appears to serve Ishtar's other aspect.
Primarily a lover, not a fighter.

Both still marked by the goddess as her own.

I really need to read through the DF RPG book. I keep forgetting DP is using material from it.

I would argue that alertness and arguably melee fall under "general development" category, not "specialization" category. Those should be non-controversial. Occult yeah, probably can wait until Amanda can express her own opinions.

If we think about it, a lot of training rolls for an infant would be perception + alertness, as they observe the world and instinctually learn from it.
I see where you're coming from in places but don't agree.

stamina is something that is of genuine use to a baby/young child because they get sick or injure themselves various ways fairly easily. Being more energetic and better able to shrug off health issues doesn't push much of anything.

Alertness isn't necessarily that bad, but again we're talking about a very young child here, injecting them with a an outsized set of skills is most likely to result in the kid leaning on them, and relating to the world through what they're best at.

I'm not saying this aspect of things is brainwashing or something similarly unethical, but it feels uncomfortably like picking the color palette of someone's personality for them.

People aren't all the same just because they work in the same fields or have the same hobbies, but the skills you develop influence how you conceptualize the world around you and the narrower your like experience is the more each part weighs in.

In fairness pretty much any leg up anyone has ever been given by early experiences also does this on some level, but to me downloading entire skills sets into a mind that is empty of pretty much everything else and will probably latch on to whatever we give it with both hands feels like it crosses some sort of line. I also don't see the point.

Amanda is a baby; teaching her useful languages and providing highly unusual but effective medical care* is perfectly reasonable, but what exactly is dex 5/melee 5 supposed to do for an infant? Is it really worth the potential consequences?

Unless you change her so much she barely qualifies as human and has a harder time relating to her age group than Ivy she won't be able to do anything with them.

I'm not saying to leave her high and dry, but even if the quest timespan is unlikely to cover her entire life Molly is going to be there until one of them dies. There's plenty of time to provide training, equipment, and various forms of empowerment at the kid's pace.

You have two, that was a typo, one moment while I add that to the front page.
Wasn't there a favor for each saved fae? And didn't we save three of them, with the fourth either dying or fleeing?

Melee 5, ok. Dex 5 includes motor skill. It's an attribute that helps with cognitive development in general, and that is a part of normal development. Not choosing the palette for her, but providing her with the widest palette possible to choose from.

And as to delaying everything until she can give meaningful legal consent out of concern that we (or Rosie) are choosing her life for her... Sorry, that sounds, at best, strange to me. We provide Rosie options of what we can help with and teach her kid. If she chooses that her kid needs to learn martial arts for self defense, or occult safety, that's her duty and right as the parent of the child to do. That's normal parenting. You provide your child with education, and opportunities.

And as to not seeing the effects... I expect the quest to last at least another in-game year, hopefully more. Child prodigies who could read by the age of two are known to exist in real life, according to google, so, we could at least aim at that level of speedy development, perhaps something a bit better.

I was reading sorcerer revised and found this item in the enchanted rituals. sounds really fun and even decently strong

••••• A sword with a bone-splinter of a Saintforged into the hilt. The reversed hilt and quillons ofthe sword count as a holy symbol when used by one ofTrue Faith against the supernatural. True Faith canalso be rolled to improve the sword's damage reflexively, adding one die per success when used to strike anunholy creature. Finally, those bearing the blades gaina +1 rating to their existing True Faith (if they have atleast one) and the Iron Will merit, but only while thesword's drawn and at the ready. They have the statistics of broadswords, causing Strength + 5 damage astheir base, and when channeling True Faith as abovethe damage is aggravated to appropriate creatures. Theweapon radiates an aura of holy flame that's visible toall supernatural abilities capable of seeing it, such as aVampire's Auspex and a Mage's Spirit or Prime scans. If the sword is ever used for "dark" purposes, the magic is immediately lost

persumably we can make more because we have saints that reincarnate

this would also be cooll

•••••• The Winchester: Said to be the first rifleproduced by Oliver Winchester under the Winchestername, then heavily modified by a member of his familythat dabbled in an odd form of techno-sorcery ("Electrodyne Engineering", as she called it), the rumor is that this gun is capable of killing anything, even the avatars of gods themselves. While not entirely true, as celestial entities and god-like beings are probably beyond its scope, it definitely comes close. The basic stats of the rifle are equivalent to an 1873 Winchester leveraction (see Wyld West Expansion Pack, pg. 14, or just use the Rifle block in M20) despite its earlier construction, but with a damage rating of 9. Against mortal beings, that's the only real advantage it provides. Its real advantage comes when turned against supernatural entities, that is, anything with a full supernatural template or that works under spirit mechanics (So, a Mage, Bane, Fomori, Wraith, and Vampire would all apply, but Kinfolk and Ghouls wouldn't). In those cases, the damage becomes three higher, is always aggravated, and is unsoakable even if the creature would normally be able to soak aggravated damage. The bullets will even hit a target in the penumbra or shadowlands.Keeping The Winchester working requires a fair bit of upkeep. For one thing, it only works with bullets that are hand-crafted for it and carved with intricate occult sigils, and no more than can fit in the gun at once can be made ahead of time, or they lose their power (so, there can be no more than 17 rounds made at once). Creating new bullets is akin to the process of casting a level 1 Enchantment ritual for each one(though that 'ritual' needn't be purchased), as well as a successful Dexterity + Crafts roll (difficulty 8). By the end of the night on any day the gun is used, it needs to be 'cleansed' by firing a specially prepared salt round out of it, then manually cleaning the barrel with a clean cloth. As an additional danger, entities that could be affected by the weapon instinctively know how dangerous it is upon seeing it, even casually, and may end up working to procure or destroy it

That also seems to be a strange argument against educating children at all. Though I know that's not really what you mean but, anecdotally my dad watched Deep Space Nine and Next Generation a lot when I was small. And those shows just have the gentle hum of electronics so they were really soothing to young children learning the vocabulary in general verbiage that is used in those shows as a young child might have changed my life I definitely started talking earlier because DS9 and Next Generation are shows focused on the dialogue being exposed to a large vocabulary and people talking leads to Greater development of language in children.

Also in general unless we feed them like a splendor fruit that transforms them in some way, they will still be able to relate to Children they'll just know more knowing things doesn't actually make you any older teenagers and children like to make that argument but as you and probably anyone who's ever grown up can attest that's never actually the case.

Now does that mean she'll completely Eclipse other children in skill, prowess and knowledge probably but what do we care about other children lack of ability. To be honest being a girl who seemingly knows everything yet still is actually mentally a child not like the archive but actually a child just means she'll probably be popular in school. She's the girl who can help you with your homework she's the girl who can beat up bullies she is the girl captain of the cheerleading team the chess team and the debate team or none of those things that she doesn't want to but you get the gist.

Okay this is getting pretty long but the gist of the whole thing is it kind of feels like as one of the kids Guardians it is our responsibility to teach them as much as possible to prepare them. My parents before I went to school taught me how to read how to write how to do math basic art skills how to speak I knew a little bit of how to play the clarinet because my mom did and that's all before I even went to kindergarten never mind whatever possible environmental knowledge I soaked up and can't recall at this moment.

Arc 11 Post 47: A History of Not
A History of Not

12th of January 2007 A.D.

After a moment's thought you take out Clippy, holding her with two fingers just so that she would know what you intend, you need some kind of test on the screen to justify a faux message, in this case nonsense code more special characters than letters. One tap for close, one tap to open a search then type in Lauren Fischer.

"Does the group Pallbearers of Ra Descending mean anything to you?" You say, meeting the eyes of the woman across from you. "What of the name Lavender Fischer?"

"Can't say the name means anything to me, but the group," she taps a manicured finger to her chin. "They are new, quite wealthy, though that is hard to judge in this city where the easiest way to get rich is to play the part." She does not seem to like these people very much, though it does not quite cross over into open enmity, more the way someone would see a group with is astray, like devout Catholic might talk about a really out there denomination, which is quite odd on its own. Ancient pagan cults are not after all known for caring about each other's specific rites. "Their leader a Mr. Oliver Adkin tried to buy the Xanadu from Silk, though she is unwilling to sell, you'll have to ask her why. Instead they somehow acquired the right to set up in the Springs Preserve..."

"Greased palms or twisted thoughts?" Tiffany asks bluntly as Harry looks deeply worried at what to him would be a whole Black-Magic-adjacent cult, but you have to wonder how hard is it really to keep something like that under the Council's radar? Sure some dumb kid like you stumbling into mind magics would be caught in short order as they warped their own mind away from any sense of discretion, but if the warlock had some sort of support and control network or better yet an otherworldly patron things get a lot more manageable.

"You'll have to ask them," Arlene shrugs. "All I know is they are not looking to found a casino, the land is protected and it is too high profile to set up a less regulated establishment. There is one thing that binds the Xanadu and the Preserve together, both are places of power. I can think of many things for which such a place could be used, most liable to get everyone involved killed."

"Because of the sin eater locked up in the basement?" Harry prompts, trying to get a rise out of her.

Alas the priestess is not playing along, her answering nod serene, her next sip of wine as calculated and elegant as all the others. "Among other things yes."

"When did they arrive in Vegas?" Harry presses.

"Mid November last year," comes the reply. You don't have to look at him to know he's thinking the same thing you are, about the same time Sandra started making waves according to Maeve. Sure it might be coincidence that two newcomers show up in the city at roughly the same time, but that seems unlikely. "I've only met Adkin once he seemed..." she hesitates. "Inspired but not touched by forces beyond himself, not very interested in worldly matters for a man able to keep such a large following together, not to mention his age. It is hard to judge given the talent for magic lends one vigor, but by his mannerisms he is over a century old, British or he lived there for a long time."

With that the four of you nod and take your leave. Once you are well outside the club and any reasonable eavesdropping range you turn to the others: "She wasn't telling us everything she knew."

"She was indeed not an fool," Lash confirms, causing Lydia to giggle as you take out the rat pose the obvious question: 'What is the full list of beings responsible for this rat being sent to Kenneth Mayeda?'

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 10/15

Not-Nathaneal Cobbler

"Uh... wow didn't know a word could taste like ash and grave dirt," you stifle the urge to spit to clear your throat, Mom had taught you better than that. "One moment while I cross-check that..."

A quick search turns out the name in an appendix of a work on the life and escapades of Giovanni Battista Belzoni an Italian-born 'proto-archeologist' at the tail end of the Eighteenth century and start of the Nineteenth if one were being generous and a particularly successful tomb robber with a background in the circus if not. From what scant evidence Clippy and company had been able to collect, breaking into a buch of academic databases in the process Cobbler had been something of a 'low' acquaintance of the already colorful Belzoni there really isn't a lot to go on, one lady of the ton, the upper class society of London called him out as being 'akin to a highwayman' not at all like the cultured Mr Belzoni in her letters while Henry Petty-Fitzmaurice, Marquess of Lansdowne supposedly once claimed that Cobler 'was a better shot than many a man of higher breeding and more liked by women than they would admit.'

"Sour grapes," Lash says in a sotto voice when you get to that part.

"It's not a true Elder at least," Lydia says more gravely. "That would explain why he hates the White Court in particular, he could have been what, at most eighty years into unlife when Stoker's book came out. Surviving must have been rough."

"If he is a former tomb robber maybe he knows the cult of Ra Descending has something of particular value," you posit, raising your voice to cover someone leaning on their horn, one assumes in celebration from the streamers trailing the beat up old Ford Fairmont.

"Do we care? Just..." Lydia makes a staking motion with her hand. "Done and come back here for more information on the person we're actually after."

Even at a slow amble the Venetian Canals are only at half an hour's walk, so you aren't exactly topped up from your little bottle of poison by the time you reach the mega-resort lit in blues and greens, over white marble and pristine waters.

Regained 2 Essence (RVD/CSR) -> Now at 12/15

"Uhm... the dead are many," Lydia begins, only for Harry to start and grab his blasting rod.

"Stars and Stones kid, put that another way!"

"Many are the dead," she counters, so straight-faced one would almost believe she wasn't pulling the wizard's leg. "There are a lot of dead here, wandering souls which for a building this young is unusual to say the least, unless they built it on an old burial ground or something in which case it would feel different."

"Like Poltergeist?" you ask absently.

"No, those are very minor... oh," she catches herself. "Is that a comic book?"

"Movie." It's easy to forget Lydia has not been immersed in the same culture as you until moments like this come up, more awareness of obscure ghost lore than landmark films. "So are our spooky friends doing something or?"

"Crowding in to look," she answers.

What do you do?

[] Attempt to greet and speak to the dead, Lydia should have some power over them

[] Go look at the crime scene for the staked incubus, perhaps you could ask some questions there

[] Go inside, try to arrange a greeting with the boss, given the kind of power all of you radiate there's no doubt you will be directed to someone supernatural

[] Write in

OOC: Since I know people are going to look for him, Cobbler himself is an OC, though everyone else mentioned in that paragraph is not.

With a gasp you come through. "It's some kind of creator being still even though it would rather with all its heart and souls to be a destroyer, it made the Black Court to be its priests and heralds, not sure from what, but each of them are of its nightmares-manifest. I think that I would get another question if I pointed the Crown at one of them." Seeing Harry's shocked expression you hasten to add: "Not like I'm going to go looking for it... just you know, just a thought."
Just a little reminder that we are about to have a Black Court vampire in range, lest we forget we had questions :p

Time to flex your metaphysical Ghost Whisperer muscles, Lydia.

Seems like this would be an easy and cost effective way of learning some Intel before we go inside.

Claiming power over the local ghosts before talking to the boss seems a bit rude.
These are his Ghosts after all, most likely.
You don't have a hideout full of ghosts by accident.

The faster we can do with this grave robbing prick the better even if it's not them it'll lead us to them. @uju32 protected by God huh... okay.

That also seems to be a strange argument against educating children at all.
My issue isn't with education or anything for the kid, it's specifically in taking someone who has nothing else and supernaturally downloading an entire knowledge set into their head. They have no other influences to balance it out.

The dots are abstractions of IC skill, not everyone with alertness 5 is necessarily monitoring their environment the same way. A blind person and a deaf one can both have it but clearly perform the action differently to give an extreme example. So there's a lot of stuff going into making a skill work.

People always try to related to the world through what they already know and can do, either by engineering a way to make their skills apply to the current issue or by taking their context with them to new skills.

To an extent this sort of influence is not only acceptable, it's necessary for proper development. Language for example, is something a parent has to pick for their kid early because it can make a huge difference in their life. Every child of immigrant parents encouraged to learn the local language of wherever their parents moved has experienced this and it's very helpful to them. But plenty of things are great in moderation and less so in extremes.

Suppose we picked melee. As a literal baby her current itinerary includes items like "cultivate mass" and "learn bladder control". Her world is very small, and she's just learning to relate to it on any level. Then we come along and all of a sudden her world turns into this in seven days:

1) her mother's face
2) the tongue of dead gods
3) sword

How one feels in your palm, what to look for to find gaps in armor, the sound they make when striking things, and all the other little things that make up using them in a real fight.

In almost every other aspect of her life she's stumbling in the dark, guessing at how to learn what she needs to learn in the first place. In this one she's a grandmaster.

Which naturally would result in Amanda asking herself the following fairly often: "but how do I bring a sword into this?". When that isn't viable the next step is trying to figure out what you need to know based on what you already understand.

A doctor and a painter both learning car repair could end up equally skilled at it but the approach they take to learn, the details that stand out and solutions that seem intuitive, are unlikely to be the same. So too with this; it's functionally the only context she'd have at a time when she's learning everything else.

This is pretty normal human behavior, you can even see the first bit in regular gameplay. How much time do we spend reframing our problems into things that can be solved by what we're good at?

Influence of this type isn't inherently wrong, but I think it's fair to do a double take and be cautious about what we chose to do here. It wouldn't hurt Amanda at all to spread the boosts out over her childhood, and order them in such a way that she's getting the most involved ones last.
