Tbf, I think he had some sort of a ceremonial/decorative silver arm during Mordred's flashbacks in Apocrypha (though that was probably the anime production crew just using FGO as a template and the writers having to justify it afterwards).

So, what's the line of reasoning for going with tackling the Servant of the class best known for its unrelenting brute strength and inability to hold a coherent thought beyond rage?

Because I'll be honest, I don't see Shirou doing anything beyond bouncing off of Mordred's bloodied abs while she plunges her sword down and kills Ayako.

It's one thing if Shirou dies, then we go to the dojo, learn a few things and try again. If Ayako dies that's it. She's gone for good and there are no second chances.

Some people may be thinking that it'll still somehow interpose us, or trigger a counterattack program. And TBH: the image of Servants being these immovable, invincible demigods that can only be countered by other Servants is from spinoff material. In Fate proper?

Saber gets her ass beat up and down the street. Archer's a bit of a pushover. And even Medea is easy to kill outside her ranged attacks. Unless a Servant is an utterly inhuman monster like Hercules, Spartacus, Gorgon, or has some durability as part of their stats, they can be hurt like you and me. They're faster than bullets, but not inherently bulletproof.

It's stupid, reckless, and ineffective, which part of me says means it must be the correct choice for Shirou to make. Trying to do something safe, practical, and un-Shiroulike is how you get like half of the Tiger Dojos.

Then again, another common source of them is being stingy with your Command Seals. If we're serious about Ayako we probably shouldn't hold back with the most surefire way to keep her alive.
