Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

[X] Take point yourself soaring up to meet in in the sky. Trapping its attentions in your mist and illusions, give Gan Guangli the time to set up his technique. (50% success. Beast captured or slain depending on degree of success. Higher risk of damage. More intelligence on similar creatures)

As usual I'm more partial to the riskier option. I think failing has very few true downsides this time and the rewards could be a coup of information for us. Easy choice to be honest.

[X] Allow Gan Guangli to play the bait, while you play the deadly wraith, trapping and killing it once it engages him. (70% success. Beast slain, low risks of collateral damage. Less intelligence on similar creatures.)

Let's not trash the home of our intended allies.

Ooh, this is a tough one ... this is something with actual real consequences, not just fluff or spreadsheeting.

My first instinct is to play it safe. Though of course, are aren't guaranteed victory here anyway.

But on second thought ... what are we losing here, in each case?

If we win (regardless of degree) but the battle causes local damage ... sure, it sucks to be a beaver, but they really aren't in a position to complain about anything we do (bringing Zhengui next time to help repair things is unlikely to cause any worse incident at this point). I can't see the battle damaging the prison by accident, since if it was that easy it would've been even easier for the foes to substantially damage the prison intentionally.

If we lose because the enemy escapes ... they gain a little intelligence on us. They already know where the beavers are, and unless they're completely clueless they should know that somebody new is moving in already. Crucially, they do not learn about the other heavy-hitting members of our faction.

If we lose because the enemy gains the upper hand in battle ... we're good at running away. I suppose I'm not considering the possibility of the enemy entirely wiping out the beaver colony ... worst case, we can always "rescue" a few VIPs on our way out.

I'm gonna go for it.

Is it not like fighting a hippo or something? I didn't get the impression this was our only opportunity to get information about them.

It sounded like there were more out on the glacier that we could hunt at any time of our choosing in the future which would be further away from the settlement. At that point we'd have more information than we do now and could also arrange for more backup depending on what we saw when we fought and presumably dissected it or hauled the corpse back to our experts for some other intel.

LLess collateral damage is the important part. We're guests, after all.

If there's a greater intellect behind them, it's going to be more wary if there's forces that can actually fight back operating in support of the Falling Waters Palace. Probably won't send individual raiders anymore, which'll mean it'll take time between assaults but be heavier in turn.

This is likely the only time we'll be dealing with only a single one.

This sounds like it could have been Tsu the Diviner who made this pact. But then again, we just don't know that many people of antiquity who would have walked these lands, so it really could have been nearly any powerful traveler who wanted the thing imprisoned in ice to remain imprisoned.

Seeing how surprised the beavers were at the "Forest people" and "Horned men", I really doubt that they made the deal with Tsu or even the Weilu in general. Most likely they were the ice mountain tribes, like the one that got married with the Meng/Diao ancestor, before they retreated further south.
That dark, dead thing being imprisoned inside a glacier just strenghten that theory. Should we bring this up with the White Sky envoys next month at the summit place? They could have actual records, or at least legends, about what we are dealing with. Or is it too confidential?

Ling Qi frowned, eyeing the glint in the sky that had taken off from the top of the distant glacier, they had a minute or two at most, especially if they were to move to avoid damaging the dam. If the beast was right trying to hold it might be very difficult."

My take is that the galcier body has been infested by these star and/or void demons, burrowing in to try liberate whatever is inside. Then some of them go out to keep the beavers at bay and without interfering. If they are wearing down the glacier, they probably can't spare to send too many away or they will risk being pushed back. If there is a commanding one among them, it could still be possible to ambush scouts and the like.

Now, regarding the vote. Most of my concerns have already been taken into account. The collateral damage is a decisive factor, we did come here to stablish friendly rapport, and the sect is already partially responsible for the damage caused to the beaver's court. Let's not forfeit that at the first shinie, though lore shines are really alluring, that comes along.

What really bothers me in this choice is that even "success" doesn't guarantee actual success. If we roll just above target, the beast will be slain anyway. So we wouldn't get much more intelligence anyway, only the higher collateral damage from the creature's trashing.
We know that there is a whole infestation of them up in the glacier that we have to deal with (this site has completely overtaken the Cathedral in my priority list). So we can come back as soon as possible with proper formations traps and such, instead of doing a rush job.
Heists require proper planning and preparation, specially if we are heisting an outside-world demon from a glacier prision.

They'd know a raider went missing (with either plan) but a lice infestation doesn't seem like the sort of thing that'd be super concerned about losses. Us baiting and isolating ones in the future if we want a capture in exchange for the raiders not hitting the village for a bit seems like a reasonable trade if we plan to deal with them anyway. Gan plan gives us time, information, and no collateral damage.

"Two hundred years ago, the stars began to stir, the demons came and the ruin began," Changin muttered. "Your warring has made it harder but…"
Two hundred years ago is about when Cai Shenhua ascended to White. Shenhua is often described as a star, and we saw that star child be confused by Renxiang. Maybe Shenhua's ascension caused this stirring?

I don't see how we would even transport this thing, so capturing it doesn't seem worth the trouble.

No risk, no reward. Getting some solid information on the star-children would be hugely valuable.

I'd rather have more information on this pact and the people who made it than information on whatever has affected this creature. Collateral damage might mean we lose out on this information, if Grandfather Beaver dies or the beavers deem we sacrificed them to capture the beast then might not be as outgoing. They're also perfect for what we want for the Snowblossom river, being the ones who guided the waters of the glacier to carve out the rivers in stone, who sheltered life and revived the land, and who is our key to approaching the Glacier/River spirit. One of our goals with the fief if taming the rapid river to be more hospitable to life and trade and that's pretty much what the beavers have been doing already. Their introduction would put us in the spirits good graces and if we want to set up a priesthood to the spirit their rites and traditions would serve as a perfect established foundation. We want them to like us and owe us

We're also doing the Fortess of Tsu project this turn, replicating when the Eagle God was brought down by the power of Xiangmen. Killing the corrupted eagle could serve as set up for this if Ling Qi brings it down and then uses that as inspiration for her rendition of the death of the Eagle God so long ago. This works for both options though, in different ways.

I'm afraid that even us taking the risk of damaging the prison further unnecessarily (from their point of view) would damage the opinion of the beaver and the glacier spirit under assault more than we think unless we make a perfect containment (which is far from guaranteed, even with the omake)

Playing it safe is best for the woodland critters, we can always ask the White Sky envoys for more info about star spirits later

Leaning this, since we might be able to pump the beavers for more intel while we hang around and maybe see if Zhengui is willing to help the great Dam be rebuilt anew.

You may want to space out your vote and your reasonning, it shows up as a write-in on the tally
