Emphasize the need to keep this quite to prevent from spooking the targets further. Lock the trains down and send in the Gendarmes to capture the spies on said trains, then send agents to bring the targeted civilians into protected custody citing them being at risk and begin a missing persons search for the missing one. Quietly Contact the Petrusite facilities Head of Security and advise them to enter a state of raised security awareness due to an ongoing anti-smuggler operation until provided an all clear, cite the smugglers apparent possession of Petrusite equipment places them at risk of intrusion, and to initiate a lockdown if they deem it necessary.

I've been saying something like this was bound to happen.

It seems like ComStar stuff, but under the cover of the Mandate.

Wouldn't be the first time ROM has tried using other organizations as cover. Granted the Jolly Roger Affair wasn't exactly a success for ROM. . .

I see the "prison break" story as having a crucial flaw that is bound to blow in our faces:

Violent murderers are very likely to be publically known, and since Helghan Republic is a mostly liberal democracy with free press and similar, the fact there is no record of them and things don't add up will become plain to journalists, then to media, then to the public in a short order. Hell, there are bound to be plenty of people who personally knew the agents while they were undercover for a year. Like the staff of the cafe Zetta frequented, landlords, employers, all with a loooooong paper-trail to prove it. Without going full NKVD there is no covering this up. The fact they weren't ever in prison will come out very quickly.

And even if it miraculously doesn't? Then the public becomes outraged that our "super-max" prisons are so incompetently guarded that over a dozen of violent criminals can escape them and evidently Helghan Law Enforcement cannot be trusted to catch them without going to the effort of stopping all mass transit to the capital dead in its tracks. The pushback would be incredible even in the best case scenario.

Comstar is good, but not that good.
dude until us Comstar had the only functional FTL communications network. you do not have that unless you can slit a throat or five of any noble or king that wants to develop their own so they do not have to pay space AT&T that also sets the price on humanity's currency.
hell, the very fact that they are the only inner sphere power with functional warships during the age where their functionality extinct and no one knew that until the clans should tell you how effective their secret service is.

They have functional Warships that they hid from everyone... by mothballing the vast majority of them, to the point where they literally have nothing beyond technical knowledge of how Warships work and are used. They only ever pulled out said ships once to deal with the turpitz affair before putting it back.

And the reason Comstar has the only FTL comsystem is because the Great Houses all agreed to give them that, i.e. they gave them they SLDF com network, in order to avoid it being blown-up during the succession wars which did work. This is also what lead to Comstar becoming the bank, because the critical trait needed to be a bank is stability, and not being in centuries long wars makes you the most stabile. The problem is that they blew themselves up so much they lost the knowledge on how the FTL comms works and have to figure it out in scratch and in secret given that their enemies (and Comstar) would jump them if they did. AND THEY DID the blackbox tech the Lyrans discovered and gave to the Fed Suns has know made its way to the Capellans, its not as good as the HPG but it works well enough that the threat of interdiction is not what it once was.

As for the Periphery? its the Periphery, most planets never had HPGs.

So uh, why havent we had the navy say blockade the planey or stand ready in case anyone tries to leave either helghan or the Sytem?

That Ad is great. I keep thinking I'm being too paranoid about COMSTAR, then I remember the shit they've pulled and it comes flooding back.

While we're indulging our paranoia, have we considered it might be the FEDSUNS.

I know they are the lore "good guys" but hear me out.

We know they are copying our tech and hardware. We blind sided them when we informed them about the black boxes and didn't ask them for anything but to stop messing with our comms. They could easily be operating in CC space from the fourth succession war so that could be black box signal we picked up. They are probably concerned about Taurians having the capability to take planets from a sucessor state and hold them.

Plus ORDI forming means there is now a new power block on there border almost comparable to a successor state.

The Helghan Republic specifically has got to be freaking them out. Especially since we are a Republic. Our actions during and in the aftermath of the AC civil war don't make any sense from the context of a House Lord or the IS in general. We have advanced tech and massive industry yet we aren't just rolling our neighbours and taking over.

This whole thing could be a redeployment of intelligence operatives from the CC after the 4th succession war by FS. We thought we were being ignored as unimportant but our actions might have caught their attention.

Personally I think it was building the giant space elevator that tipped them off. :)

I mean its possible, but i feel your are dismissing the Maskirovka, they are still among if not the best (besides ROM) offensive espionage organization in the current era. I mean does no one remember the raid on portland? on how it basically lead directly to the Capellan Confederation? Hazarding a guess the Capellans have had resources in place in the Periphery as a means of protecting their southern boarder and to counter actions from the Fed Suns and FWL. This ultimately lead to them learning about a strange new power in the far edge of known space during the reconquest, one with new/advanced tech. so they set up a raid to act as a distraction so they can nab some of that good stuff, only to find to their dismay that they under-estimated us and now we are on to them, ultimately this doesn't turn out to be much of a problem for them, but they ultimately didn't get what they wanted. So at that point the Capellans were probably setting up plans to try and get our stuff again...but then all that got put on the back burner because of the 4rth Succession War and those plans got inherited by the Celestial Mandate.

I'm not entirely certain the Mandate can afford to focus on foreign adventures against us when they could be re-uniting the Capellan Confederation under their leadership.

They would be better served going after the breakaway pirate state from both a propaganda and economic standpoint.

ROM on the other hand has capacity to spare for efforts against us, as well as motive.

Yeah good point, you're probably right in it being the Celestial Mandate. If they inherited the Maskirovka that's gonna suck for us. Pretty much for everybody else too.

Damn, going by the standards set by canon for crazy espionage in Battletech things may get... I don't know. Weird. Real weird probably. In a super bad way that makes little sense.

This makes me think how much more boring spying in the Inner Sphere is now without Mad Max and Hanse Davion.

The Mandate has no illusion on retaking the CC dude. To do that invites a war with the FedSuns, FWL, CC, and the TRF all at once. So yes they would focus on the weaker periphery because no on would care about them doing it.

Only they don't realize that the scar covered dog snoozing next to the augarians is a battlescared warhound and they are gearing up to jab it with a cattleprod

you mean grabbing Max? that was FWL.
Nope it was the FedSuns that did it. They tried Max together.

They would know we have fought a major war, invasion, and civil war in the last generation. We haven't hidden our history from anyone so it is fairly easy to find. They just likely underestimate the scale and experience we have from it.

I just realized something.

If everything with ComStar went on schedule since we last got a glimpse of them, Myndo should be Primus right now.

She got the position in 3029 in canon and it's 3033 right now. . .
