[X] Interrogate what his plan is, and how he intends to change the nightmare.

The Yrs WoG is really helpful here, because "why are you doing this" does tend toward more of a connotation of "because this is a bad enough idea that I need to ask."

Asking more about 'why' feels kind of redundant, story pacing-wise, with the conversation he just had. It feels unlikely to add too much more information, and I don't think it's likely to change her mind on anything either. Ling Qi tends to be idealistic in the way CRX is idealistic, where she seeks practical implementations to progress toward higher ideals, and Xuan Shi feels far enough removed from that school of thought that this is unlikely to lead her to any personal insights (let alone Insights)--what he's doing with Kongyou isn't because Kongyou started out important to him or because it provides some material advantage to others he cares about. That doesn't make it wrong, but it does make it alien to Ling Qi, and I don't expect that to change. It feels like the final result of the "why" option will just be Ling Qi saying, "really? huh. weird" and moving on.

The "how" lets her add whatever insight she can, and more easily transitions to her assisting on a more ongoing basis if he so desires. It also lets her more easily challenge any material assumptions he's making about how dream spirits work, and I also expect that it's more likely to result in Ling Qi leaving the conversation sure he has things handled. The last vote means that Ling Qi isn't likely to interfere, but ongoing skepticism isn't going to be great for that relationship, and it means that should we end up in a situation where Kongyou can be uniquely useful, then she's unlikely to let that happen. I'd rather try for Ling Qi accepting this, rather than separating while they agree to disagree.

[X] Interrogate why he feels the need to do this with a dangerous and deceptive spirit

f i n a l l y

he has finally started to come out of his shell in a way that jives well with Su Ling, Renxiang and ourselves.

when attempting to shift the world into a better version of itself, it is necessary to be as tenacious and stubborn on that point as possible

Kongyou could very much be the "Memento Mori" style companion, whispering tragic ends into his ear for the rest of his life.

A strange choice, to pick up a companion that will actively challenge and combat your Way like that. But perhaps a way for the scion of the notably durable Scholar Kings to accelerate his growth and insights through constant challenge and grind

I would like to know why. Because I think Xuan Shi is good, and I'd like to know his thoughts rather than the technical specs. Besides, Su Ling was tormented by Kongyou before we arrived and Su Ling has an axe to grind against malevolent liminal foes who take advantage of nice men. If Su Ling can sense us from so far off I wouldn't be surprised if she already knew about Kongyou but was letting it slide because "ducal stuff not my business"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
this is working under the assumption that Xuan Shi is a good competent lad that is quite aware of how his clan's ASSERT PRESENCE diplomacy is quite destructive to others. He is a ducal scion who, given his prior potential engagement to Meizhen (her dad is still a spymaster to Suzhen directly) and was asked after by the Admirals when they visited, is likely well supported and quite talented.
it would make sense to me for Xuan Shi to be very aware of how the world works, especially given the conversation that was just had. A lot of his responses seem well thought through, as if he's had this argument in his head before and came to a conclusion at some point prior to this point.
No. I think he knows the technical aspects of what he's doing with extreme precision. He's a talisman crafter that works with TimeSpace, I think his technicals/book-knowledge should be on point.
The better question (in my opinion) is why, but it's for our (and LQ's) benefit not Xuan Shi's. Because he seems like the kind of self-critical introvert that will have already asked both questions of himself, and found answers. I just want to know his answer for Kongyou, since. Well.
there are a lot of potential "why's" and I'd like to know, lol
Even if asking "why" isn't aggressive, I think it's much less supportive of our friend. He lacks confidence, a visible show of trust and support is ideal.
[X] Honestly I would prefer not to interrogate at all - just say we have experience with muses and are happy to help in any way we can.
Though a path might be hard and lonely, it has worth if you can present something of beauty to those you care for at the end.
To seek the horizon is not foolish," Xuan Shi paused "I think, even if one should never reach it."
These run parallel I think. They're based on similar concepts.
This is probably the most likely way for Ling Qi to empathize with his choice. If she sees him value the result, then she would not oppose him even if its hard and difficult...though their difference is that Qi is result oriented and Shi is more of "Journey above Destination"
The empire really gotta work on their foreign diplomacy department.
It is the way of Imperium. Powers inclined to listen to and understand other people do not usually WANT to wind up with large empires.
I'm interested in hearing if he even has a real plan, or just wishful thinking. We've mostly seen him be passive about his goals so far.
Eh, I would have rather left it all alone. Barring that, I will vote for what I think is the less intrusive option.
I just want to learn more about our friend and his ideals/thoughts which I think this supports finding out
The Backstreet Boys almost got me to change my mind ... but I want to know about purposefully changing spirits and how all that works.
I was dead set on asking why, because I wanted Ling Qi to have reaching for understanding be her go-to when someone she cares about is risking themselves; she internalized that she can't wrap up her friends to keep them safe from all danger forever, and replacing that impulse with a desire to understand what's driving them to tempt fate seems like a good step.
But then you pointed out that there's a chance to get some spirit lore, and oh boy do I love spirit lore.
How does feel more important to me then why.
As I see it, from a purely pragmatic perspective, asking why is to help LQ convince herself on whether this is the right thing to do or not. It is asking Xuan Shi to convince LQ.
Asking how allows Ling Qi to assess the viability of the project and maybe offer input/advice on how to proceed.
I kinda want to focus on Ling Qi helping the brainstorming process and reviewing Xuan Shi's plan (and knowing ahead of time what the plan is, in case she needs to intervene eventually) over Ling Qi having to ponder whether she is in favor or against Xuan Shi's choice, whether she agrees or disagrees.
