On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

I like the idea of keeping the toy making/giving between Snorri and Karstah. Making it a trial would, to me at least, cheapen the experience.
Agreed. Now I'm pretty sure Snorri would approve if another runesmith got into the toy-making business. He'd feel bemused, but he would approve.

But, making it into a trial, a chore forced upon would-be students would cheapen it. Especially, when it is such an emotional connection between him and his adopted daughter.

The only kind of toy trial that I could see working is having them bring a new toy (as in invent something) into the world. But even that is both not in line with how we want these runes to proliferate, and too much of a challenge if anything.

It took the better part of the year, but you did manage to discover the truth behind one of the Runes on the handle. It was seemingly the source of the basket's ability to store stonebread far in excess of what its visible volume entailed. This Rune of Stacking as you've come to call it, somehow allows a container to carry far more than its normal capacity, though not indefinitely. The amount varied depending on the item, but it seemed to scale poorly, with bags having the most growth while anything larger than a barrel saw smaller and smaller gains. Further, the Rune reduced the weight of that extra volume by half according to your measurements.
Ohh, expanded magazines for crossbows. That would a fun application of the Rune.

For rune of repair, maybe a trial to see those who can repair a certain number of tools, weapons, or armors in a certain amount of time while maintaining good quality. Let them understand just how much the rune helps

So Runesmith Village is going to have hotsprings now. What is this quest turning into? An anime?

As for trials for the new runes...I feel like having them be related to the runes in question would be appropriate. Something about gathering and organizing a certain amount of resources, possibly for a difficult and/or lengthy trip that they then have to complete with what they've gathered for the Rune of Stacking. And for the Rune of Repair...all I can think about is repairing something, maybe they destroy or damage something of theirs or of importance that they then have to repair on their own, what the choose to be their sacrifice, how badly they damage it, and how well they repair it all being parts of the trial. That way an appreciation for the runes' purpose is impressed upon them.

The Rune had few to no similarities to any Runes you knew of. The closest thing to a structural similarity was to the Rune of Passage and Runes you put on buildings of all things and that was only in relation to distance and space. Your best guess was that something was being stretched by the Rune, but what exactly that was you could not say.
The description of the action said it had similarities to the Rune of Load-bearing. Did that mean in the striking or what? Or did you just not want to repeat the action description?

[ ] Understand Valaya's Runes: [Cost: (12 -6) =6 actions] Journeyman of the Odd will proc. On the basket that bears her Master Rune, Valaya or perhaps some other Runesmith put down two other Runes. You can make a guess as to their purpose, but aren't too sure. One bears a similarity to the Rune of Load-bearing, the other the Rune of Healing.

His father wasn't neglectful, but praise was hard to come by, at least verbally. Not that he begrudged him, it was simply his way.

Then again his father and mother doted on his own children with far less restriction than they had with him.
Is that last sentence supposed to mean that Otrek doted on his grandchildren?

[x][trial]
-[x]rune of repair: Put a smashed suit of armor back together again. Don't want them using the rune as a crunch after all. Also might as well make the trial something useful.
-[x]rune of stacking: deliver the hearth guards entire ale ration in one trip. They aren't going to make very good use of the rune if they aren't already good at packing and carrying.

So uh I think we just found the difference between Grungni and Valaya's teaching methods. Grungi was like here's a chain gl while Valaya gave us a starting point with some really interesting runes that really need refinement. I think we might have unlocked another research chain with these runes to improve them.

Also, I think the family dispute Smednir mentioned was us scoring a point for Grungni's teaching methods because we managed chain before her basket.

Multiplying, or rather reducing the contents, a small volume? There can only be one use for such a valuable gift: hip flasks.
Nah, flasks are meant to be quickly emptied, cleaned, and refilled. They're not really meant to store drinks for long periods, and tend to get some pretty nasty flavors after a shorter period of time than many other drink-carrying devices. Water-flasks would work, but not drinking flasks.
A thermos, however, has potential. It's mouth is wide enough to hold things like soup easily, and the reduced exterior surface area would likely be helpful for maintaining temperature. And intriguing if it isn't helpful with that, which is its own reward.

What I'm thinking is Drakeguns.

Well, handheld flamethrowers in general, really. There are a lot of options that would work really well, from the mundane to the extravagant. Snorri even mentions the danger of using flammable substances, so we might as well run with that idea and make hand flamers.

[X] [Trial:] QM's choice.

Going with this both because it doesn't really matter what the trial is and because I trust the QM to make an appropriate trial!

This was never going to be the end of a chain here. There were always going to be more things to poke and prod, and make runes from. The only things that actually remove research from the list are the materials science options.
Not gonna lie, I fully expected the basket to be a one and done research project. It wasn't and now I'm all for pocket dimension research. Maybe we can improve the rune of stacking enough to make a bag big enough to stuff the research pile into.

I'd like to think the small nod to putting a bag of holding into another bag of holding this update was on purpose. When I read that section, I literally gasped because I thought Snorri was going to blow up haha

Maybe something like...

[] Plan Trials of Perspective and Appreciation
-[] Trial of Repair
--[] The trial will consist of the prospective journeymen runesmiths receiving and repairing and performing maintenance of a set amount of runic or mundane items to repair to the best of their ability in the shortest time possible for their own ability. The larger the amount the better. Then they must quantify the amount of time it costs to have to maintain the equipment in various reports.
-[] Trial of Inventory
--[] The trial will consist of the journeymen having to determine the amount of supply necessary for a hypothetical expedition into the wilderness for a significant expedition and having to utilize limited amount of storage capacity (i.e. limited amount of wagons, draft animals, etc) and they must prioritize the supplies if they cannot fit all the needed supplies into the limited space. This will be critiqued by Hearthguards' rangers.
-[] Theme of Trials: To give the prospective journeymen perspective on the value of the deceptively simple yet valuable Runes that are not flashy yet are very important on their own right.

"Well look at the bright side," Tullek cuts in with a pat on Rudil's shoulder, "We have ourselves a nice little spring to use for whatever we want! Why we can get some running hot wate- wait no Runes already do that. Hmph, I'd say something about a good source of potable liquid but looking at it more closely....not too safe to drink either considering the kind of activity involved. You'd need Runes to filter it as well. Oh, I have it! A bathhouse! That would be a nice touch, something close by instead of having to trek all the way to the Springs. Course we'll have to filter it for anything harmful as well, also mineral build up depending if the stone's shoddy, but I've seen Runes and a bit of clever masonry fix that too. All we need to do is get the whole thing sorted and squared away. Mikken come here and give me your best guess as to how long that pillar there'll last. I want a second opinion..."

Tullek has quickly become my favorite Hearth guard because of this. Hes so jovial and fun! Honestly, making the hearthguard is the single best damn action we've done since we've left character creation I'll tell you what!
