On Thread Etiquette:

I'm not going to weigh in on the logic of either side's arguments, but I will ask that everyone read over what they write and really consider if the words they used are polite and won't be inflammatory intentionally or not. You cant account for people's tolerances perfectly but at least try to say your piece without saying things that can be easily construed as overly dismissive of the other side of the argument, thank you.

Please endeavour to be cordial. :^)

Just found and finished this quest a few days ago, and WOW I just want to offer a huge thank-you to Soulcake for being such an amazing QM and really capturing the feel of Dawi culture. Not only that, but the whole thing is full of entertainment, humor, and excellent characters that you can't help but love.

On the current discussion - can we get commissions to pay us in rare creature parts? I checked the FAQ but I didn't see anything there about it.

Can we please stop bogging ourselves down with commissions for at least a couple of turns? There's always going to be more commissions. If we don't stop and research at least somewhat then we're going to stagnate!
We're literally releasing the holy grail of Dwarfish blacksmithing in a few turns. We could do nothing for a literal thousand years and probably be considered one of the most impactful Runelords of all time. Research is absolutely meaningless without it being applied. The research exists to support commissions and enabling other Dwarfs.

Nevermind these commissions give us great opportunities to see our research in action.

I'm vastly more interested in the unique item commissions than I was in the enormous "make a bunch of stuff" commissions, for the record. Choosing runes, coming up with a design, and trying to get a new combo or something is a lot more interesting to me than just "feed in actions until done, and when it's done it's just done." It just has so much more space for creativity. And in the case of the pick and the axe there's built-in flexibility on how many actions we choose to sink into them exactly (though knowing the thread we'd probably just wind up overflowing them anyway). I do agree we don't necessarily need to take them right now, but I would very much like us to be seriously thinking about doing so.

In terms of the axe, I REALLY don't like using the Master Rune of Grimnir. Encouraging the dawi's tendency to seek only victory or death is not something I'm down for. I'd rather help them live, not just live until the end of the battle and then fall over dead, no matter how glorious that might be.

I did actually have a draft plan for an axe a while back that I think could be good here. To repost that:

Drengen Dronaz - Weapon: Master Rune of Flight (The Sky King's Crest Feathers), Rune of Lightning (Dragon Ogre Shaggoth Blood), Rune of Cold (Elder Frost Wyrm's Blood)

I spent objectively WAY too long trying to figure out if I was doing the Khazalid for the name at all right, but if I got it right that should come out to Killing Storm (it's literally Killing Thunder according to the lexicon I used, but I put the suffix for a physical thing on "thunder" to try to make it signify as "storm" instead). Anyway, the Sky King's Crest Feathers are slightly off-brand from the Great Eagle's Feathers typically used for the Master Rune of Flight, but griffons are half-eagle and the Sky King specifically has powerful connections to both lightning and cold so I'm hopeful we could get a dope combo effect out of that. We could theoretically order Elder Storm Wyrm's Blood for the Rune of Lightning to put T4 mats on all three runes, but we do have 7 mats of Dragon Ogre Shaggoth Blood just kinda lying around so idk.

Frankly I'm for finishing the Valaya commission now that we have begun it. Then we can research for a turn and go to the Gazul commission. Leaving it half done irks me.

Seriously though, researching random corpses is low on my priority list, there's just so much more interesting stuff to do.
Except those corpses and materials may have things that make all the projects that everyone else wants to latch onto go quicker and easier. Replacement reagents for powerful runes, etc. They don't do us a lick of good sitting in a closet gathering dust!

Karak Kadrin is super huge on Grimnir anyway, and paying homage to that fact means theyll give more oxygen to Snorris own venerations of the Valiant, rather than the Doomed.

The first step to convincing anyone is making sure that they will listen

Honestly I expect the commission plan to win as everyone approval votes it once they realise their preferred plan isn't going to win.
That would be funny and I honestly wouldn't mind that much I want the basket done for the Rhunkalbrogg so if that does end up happening I just push for it next turn or failing that the turn after.

What does Master Rune of Valaya do to weapons?

hmmm maybe finish basket so if we meet valaya again she will give us another item to research and praise snorri for being a good student?

And reagents are worthless if we don't know what they can do. So without actually doing the research, it can't be applied in the first place. At this point I'm honestly wondering why Soulcake even keeps the research around anymore. All it does is pile up because everyone else just wants to chase commissions!

Because we keep chasing research and have several passives that let us roll for progress on them anyway, in addition to Favors letting us get extra actions out of it?

No need for hyperbole

I'd kinda forgotten they could add progress to other stuff, my bad there. In that case I'd say at least finish the odd places first as upgrading our odd trait increased the rewards we get from material research so hopefully mastor of the odd will increase gains from researching them.

We'd have to do the understand the master rune action to find out, and yeh that's the plan with the basket hopefully Valaya punishes us with more research actions we don't have the AP for rewards us with more stuff to research that builds on what we got from the basket.

No need for hyperbole
*gestures at the list of reagents that have been sitting there for almost a third of the quest.* This isn't hyperbole. This is extreme frustration with the fact that so few people actually seem to want to make use of the resources we have after we have them. Instead they're treated like trophies.

What are you talking about? We're literally investing in alchemical research so that when we do investigate the reagents, we can use them for even more purposes. Several of the reagents we have researched obviously have some kind of further potential we don't know how to leverage because the Winds are so drastically different than Runeworking as a magical paradigm. Do you know how long it's been since we've researched a reagent? Turn 36 we technically researched 2. We research reagents, we use them. Our retinue literally wears them as flash bling. I want to use reagents to affect the world and engage with the setting. Not take them as an excuse to fucking ignore it. Sue me.

A lot of the reason is that we've always had apprentices taking up our fifth action. Once we have it free, we'll be able to do more Mat research.

No need for hyperbole
And claiming that this commission would be the Axe of Dargo is not a hyperbole?
I mean, for all we know, Dargo could be as common a name with Davi as George is with the english.
And, since we do know how the canonical az would have been constructed, trying to play up on the canonical legendary weapon feels mighty disingenuous to me.
Mind, I am not accusing anyone of anything, except perhaps for an overabundance of enthusiasm and zeal, which are by no mean bad things.
I'm just saying, @TempestK is just as entitled to their own opinion and attitude as everyone else involved in the quest, and from my PoV, everyone is already using hyperbole, so why should they be singled out?

Because we're just as entitled to call what he says hyperbole as you are to call what any of us say hyperbole. Plus having what you say reacted to by others is part of posting on a forum after all and in this case he just said something that a lot of people think is hyperbole so he got a lot of reactions.

i think we can ignore the axe commission safely, once the gromil chain knowledge is released, the king will likely just think oh the super runelord refused I probably was just not worthy of the time, instead of being insulted, and someone else can take it over

I actually had the same idea a while back, but I used hearts instead of blood, the Sky King gained his powers from eating hearts so the hope is it would bring the magical effect closer to his powers by using hearts, I also tried to use construction materials from the same being the original hearts came from. My idea was to use it as a sidearm for Snorri but I wouldn't be completely opposed to making it as a commission, the only issue is I'm not sure how a Brana themed weapon would be taken outside of the far north.

[X] Plan Basket, plus prepare the defenses
My preferred plan for the turn, lets us get the basket done with plenty of time for if Valaya's at Rhunkalbrogg and on the off chance researching the runes does help improve our armour runes we can make use of that for the Valaya commission.
[X] Plan Preemptive Appeasement
And the approval vote which has us finishing off the commission and puts back the choice of what to spend our research turn doing.
