Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Also, analysis from the perspective of combat threat assessment seems questionable; these are strong 4th realm spirits. It's negotiate or get lost/eaten/likely mission fail.

Ling Qi let out a breath and slipped her arm around Hanyi's shoulder. They listened for a moment to the deep and powerful song that underlaid the blizzard, noting its harmonies and its differences. One way or the other, they were going to have to talk their way through this. She doubted that Cai Renxiang would be able to cow these fourth realms.

I was thinking of their threats in terms of

Many are the spirits of the world whose very being is hostile to human kind, not through any ill intention, but simply as a part of their nature.

Being able to defend against their attack more effectively means that those incidental "I didn't realize you were there" attacks are easier to weather.

On a related note, we only have MoSS 2, right?

[X] Seek the smothering white.

Admittedly picking this mainly for character interaction and potential character growth

[ ] Seek the wailing wind.
One was the scream of the wind and the force of the driving ice shards, it's power lay in the sky above and to the south of them, where the storm clouds were thickest. Its power was wild and frantic, a thing of wind as much as cold, eroding all before it.
What can I say? I like its style. It seems a bit unpredictable, but I don't see it as being ideologically committed to barring our path. Maybe we get to race around with it a bit!

In terms of potential insights, examining the intersection of Cold and Wind isn't something we've done much before, and they're both things we're good at. Hanyi's toyed with her less rooted themes in the past as well.

[X] Seek the smothering white.
The last reminded her most of Zeqing. It was the purest cold. It lived in the white out, and on the high peaks, dancing with the first spirit as they drowned the world in white together. In winter it descended to blanket the land in life ending cold as it did now. It's power was centered on a low mountain southeast of here overlooking the gorge.
This one looks the most interesting to me, and seems likely to have the least alien frame of reference. Not just in terms of similarity with Zeqing, who we are familiar with, but in the scope of its attention to the region we occupy, trudging through the valley. Because of that factor, I expect this one of the three spirits to be the most useful in potentially giving us a glimmer of understanding into how Ice Witches see things. It may be a long shot, but it's the closest shot available, imo.

In terms of potential insights, I'd chalk this one down as relevant to the Control aspects of our build. Our Mist, Hanyi's Lonely Winter Maiden. The spirit occupies a region with its snows, and I think that's quite fitting as inspiration for a lot of what we do.

Edit: hehehe

[X] Seek the smothering White.

Ultimately the Wind spitit is just that, a spirit of wind and Cold. There is no narrative weight there in comparison to a spirit close but not quite like Zeqing.

[X] Seek the wailing wind

"Cold seeks heat, and darkness seeks light. Emptiness yearns for fulfillment ... Yes, desires must be grasped, even should they bring an ending." -Zeqing

I'd welcome Smothering White showing up during the meeting with Wailing Wind. I'm just hesitant to seek out the most predatory and likely most possessive of the three in her own territory, a wild spirit of endings that likes to smother things, without Hanyi's prior agreement or advice from someone who knows the spirit.

[X] Seek the stolid glacier.
If we can't convince this one, they're also likely the least likely to be offended and the easiest to back off from to try a different spirit.
