[X] Catch the Elder's attention, and speak of the strange encounter.

For me, it's all about mindset. I don't think anything particularly bad is going to happen if we tell Cai first or tell the Elders first. But Ling Qi is considering not telling the Elders because she doesn't trust how they'll respond. I don't want to encourage that kind of thinking. It's tremendously unlikely she can hide anything from them, it's poor form to hide something from folk who have done well by you, and again it probably won't have major negative consequences. Even in the case where the Elder Nai reacts badly, there's still Jiao and the Duchess to back us up. We're more likely to get a rep boost from sharing than a rep hit from talking to barbs.

A spiderweb of fractures spread out from the central crack. A sickening unlight radiated out from them, and to Ling Qi's alarm, she felt a disquieting sensation, as if she were dispersing herself to hide, but involuntarily. Ling Qi seized control back of her own qi just as her fingertips began to dematerialize and drift away. The effort brought a sharp pain. It felt like a hundred needles had been jammed into her fingers at once.
Hm. So rereading through the update I think this part kinda confirms what I've suspected the Moon to be capable of doing for awhile, and that is influence Ling Qi overtly albeit they're not like the stars in being oppressive i.e they won't force her to do something. Basically this was the Moon, or at least part of it trying to twist Ling Qi's arm to "vacate the area as you're a danger to everyone around you alongside yourself", because one of the probable uniting features that all eight of the Great Spirits of the Moon share is a blood feud with the stars whose length is comparable to how long it takes geography to change... without human intervention obviously.

CRX did not trust the suicide mission. LQ didn't think it seemed a good idea. The Sect did not sincerely tell the cultivators they were going to be bait. I find their greed at this juncture was salvaged only because Cai Renxiang and Ling Qi intervened in the plan and forced it to work positively.

We are not obligated to trust Sect judgement so long as we follow orders. Which we did.

Even during the first Scout mission, we did our job rather than satisfy personal curiosity knowing that Liao Zhu was there to save us if it got spicy.

We can be trusted to follow orders. The Sect can be trusted to be powerful. The dynamic isn't changed even on the much more sour readings of this situation.

This is more or less provincial level diplomacy, not tactical war info. That's Cai territory and we are sworn to Cai.

Sect Head Yuan was not able to safely pursue the entity which woulded Brother Yongrui, but it will not survive an assault on the Sect.

I'd rather a more positive relation with the ice ladies rather than the sect, and currently their frothing at the mouth to kill barbs so let's bail the ice lady with LOADS OF DOSH

Alright, so the situation is good news mixed with bad. The caldera group was stalemated or can perhaps even claim a pyrrhic victory. But for the Sect, this is a major strategic victory, since it forced the enemy to show their hand, and now the barbarian Prism ace in the hole is recovering. Perhaps the starstone fragments are still worth something, though far less than we suspected since it's an egg rather than a boulder.

Ling Qi is even more (in)famous now due to her defensive Domain which prevented permanent casualties. This is in stark contrast to the perimeter group which suffered severely.

I agree we should take the news directly to the Duchess, since she is more likely to respond rationally to the barbarian threat. For better or worse the Sect leadership's views have been shaped by their experiences centuries ago and they are adapting slowly to new realities -- their hatred of barbarians clouding their judgement. Letting an Elder be outgunned even though we had the drop on the meeting is an outrageous mistake. Not only that, the heir of the Emerald Seas came uncomfortably close to being atomized.

I don't know how it got to this point actually. I initially believed the Sect would be the foremost effective line of defense against the southern barbs, but now their competence is being called into question.

More and more, I'm glad we chose CRX over the Sect. (In reality I'm sure the Sect would be would be written completely differently if we went down that route)

Not the best time to speak to the elders. And even if we did, how would we bring it up?

"I am sorry, this is probably somewhat minor but ice spirit gave me this after saying stuff about lineage"

I'd like Cai Renxiang to get into the discussion with the elders, which would be fascinating.

I feel like there should have been a middleground option where we bring it up to Cai Renxiang on the spot and punt the issue up the chain of command, she could probably judge if it is actually a matter for the sect or if it is in her mothers purview.

I trust the Duchess to be more levelheaded about this than the sect leaders who built a plan that CRX and Ling Qi both disagreed with, to varying degrees.

RIP moon guy

The Sect just had the equivalent of a military group attempting to crash a clandestine meeting of various terrorist groups who are negotiating terms of cooperation with each other only to find out that it was in fact a nuclear arms deal that had a full battalion of support just out of sight, when your hope was to at least perform decapitating strike if not capture some of their leadership structure and now your contending with far worse things all the while your intel and comms personnel are screaming at each other about a thousand things no one planned to be dealing with today all the while your senior staff are busy trying to keep the deployment of your major weapons from becoming a complete shit show.

All this while your scout/breaching force are hunkering down well within range of enemy forces while attempting to extract the, just for emphasis, SURPRISE NUKE that they managed to pull out of enemy hands that keeps leaking radiation like a sieve.

This whole operation was, much like prior engagements that involved the Shishigui, a symptom of the Sect and the Empire as a while not being ready for a war while the other forces have the benefit of being the instigators and therefore having the initiative. Combined with the Shishigui's current status as a wildcard in terms of capabilities, the Shishigui are compounding intelligence problems that normally would not be nearly as severe as what the Sect is experiencing. Namely a lack of intelligence regarding approximate numbers of major strategic assets, anything regarding what their troop and civilian movements actually mean, and literally anything about the blackbox that is Shishigui support capacity all after removing the best man from the job in terms of analyzing and combating Tribal tactics, Zhou.

The only major engagements to date are what the Sect assumed was a routing border conflict that became a major incursion supported by unknown enemy forces of unknown but significant strength that cost the Sect their greatest military mind in Zhou which was absolutely the best possible opening move by the Tribes and Shishigui.

Then what was a successful scouting mission went sideways during what was supposed to be the easy part with the revelation that the enemy can brute force Elites effectively on command and that their very environment is dangerous to the Sects best assets and equipment and that what is supposed to be reliable is not.

And just now we've had a capture and kill retaliatory strike go to hell in a hand basket, with resources normally only seen in limited quantities on full display by individuals that shouldn't rank high enough to have any, while attempting to secure a surprise objective in the Starstone while in the middle of what is effectively a pissing match between battleships using their big guns instead of the intended "kill, grab, destroy, evac while Elders pincer and snipe their target."

But we are still in the opening stages of a war and the Sect is having trouble rousing from their defensive stance guarding the wall to a more active state they haven't taken since Ogodei, while still having to continue manning their current stations along the wall for if nothing else observation posts. The structural reworking needed to handle this is going to be rough and full of growing pains. Especially when the people in charge are by nature specialized to certain role better than others and as stated we already lack Zhou's own expertise and cautious respect for the dangers that the Barbarians pose in stark contrast to his relative's own personal grudge combined with having to reverse course on his preparations for retirement means he isn't s up to speed as he would otherwise be.

However once the Province and potentially the rest of the Empire get moving, it's endgame for the Tribes and Shishigui as the benefit of the Empire's structure is that their resources, manpower, and talisman production will outstrip anyone except maybe the Shishigui's who can sacrifice personnel for power. What we are experiencing right now is the Tribes throwing haymakers while they work to acquire weapons that are both big and scary enough to keep the Empire from deploying its own big guns or performing rear line blitzes to demolish their home bases

However right now, as stated the Sect is still mobilizing and lacks the organizational fluidity to properly address what we've learned and is liable to lump Elsa in the, "To be hit with a hammer" bucket with the other Tribes. I suggest we take it to the Duchess as she has both the lack of others who could gainsay her decisions on resource allocation and currently a general abundance of resources to look at this as a different sort of opportunity.
