The Path Unending (A Cultivation Quest)

[X] Be affable, while Jai Fa continues to be intimidating as she stands behind him. Tell him that the only reason you can think that he might be following you right now is that he's spying for Jin Yazhu to learn about your charms for the upcoming duel. If this is the case, you are not angry, and you tell him as such. Neither of you know one another, except by reputation. Perhaps he is being paid, or perhaps he is being coerced, or perhaps it is something else. Regardless, you are not offended, as you doubt it is personal on his end. You'd like to hear his reasons for doing this, or if he was following you for some other reason, but right now you can't really tolerate anyone trying to spy on you. If he promises to stop, you'll let him leave unmolested this time, and if he's here for something else you'd be happy to let him speak his mind.
-[X] Note that if he is being coerced, you'd be happy to teach him a style suited towards self-defense at a later date, if he would like to learn.
-[X] You give him one last opportunity to say something. If he won't explain anything further, let him leave, and then move to find a place Jai Fa can practice while taking steps to avoid further tails.

Me: *Reads the Plan
My Immature Self: Lol Unmolested

I feel like sending Fa off would leave us pretty vulnerable to an ambush. Maybe try to sneakily tell her to hide near by instead of going all the way to the training ground?

Edit: is there a discord for this story?
except fa has all of our charms. so if we get jumped then nothing really happens. we don't lose anything except maybe our pocket change. even then we have the warhounds cry which even stunned jai fa and we haven't used it in front of anyone but here and nokai so its kind of a secret weapon, so i'm pretty sure we can get away.

and yes there is a disc. sure someone else can link you.

Not gonna lie,

I don't see the point in keeping Fa here and trying to scare Teng into talking. If intimidation was going to work, then we wouldn't be having this vote.

(No offense intended)

We have nothing but suspicion, and tbf, sneaking up on the guy who's know to be very nervous and pinning him between two stronger disciples is not conductive to good communication. It costs nothing to be kind, whereas kindness can make a huge difference.
I'll note that we have a lot more than just suspicion right now. We know for a fact he was actively sneaking up to listen in on us instead of just casually passing by, which justifies the bit of passive intimidation that Enjou's vote includes. (Why include the passive intimidation? Because what he did wasn't cool, to say the least, and we shouldn't be so quick to make it seem like it was.)

That being said, overall Enjou's vote does have us being firm but polite when talking to him about his eavesdropping. On top of that, that vote asks him if he's being coerced, and says that we'd teach him self-defense (The Dance), if he is. Think you should include that, KR, since Mei taught us the Dance so we wouldn't be weak anymore. That's the sort of thing that I'd expect from the thematics in your vote anyway, at least IMO.

i made that change to his plan. so vote for mine if thats what you want lol.

I understand the sentiment, but I don't think it'll get anywhere.

Intimidation isn't foolproof, sometimes people just shut down if they get too scared. Which kind of feels like what's going on right now.

Also, I made the generic offer of help because what if he's being coerced, but doesn't WANT to learn how to fight? Leaving it open lets us offer that, but doesn't restrict us to it

[] Write-In - "Do you like riddles, Teng Lim? I have one for you, answer it well and I'll answer a question you have for me. Say you're in front of a maze ..." (Try to get him to solve the maze riddle, mostly to get him talking).

I mean, as long as we were only asking him for his take on the question rather than taking him directly to one of our personal challenges, this would only be a bad idea rather than a suicidal one, but I'd still rather not. If he manages to clue in whoever's holding his leash to the fact that we're interested in a maze, that could easily lead to them trying to solve it / get someone else to solve it in order to deny that asset to us. No giving info away for free!

[X] Exchange pointers with him, at length
-[X] Also look behind us in case this is a case of mutual surrounding.

[] "Well, so be it then. If you wish to discuss matters, my door is always open" Turn around and make your way out. "Otherwise, we do not seem to have any business, I will be on my way then."
-[] Just leave, there's no need to be needlessly cruel, you should try and take some steps to try to lose any other tails you might have though.

I'm okay with any of these options.

Sorry dude no approval voting in this quest you gotta pick 1.

Literally two people know where the maze is, and we're one of them. I dont' think you have to worry about someone finding a maze that maybe exists somewhere. I'm not sure why this is a concern.
We'd be telling him about the maze in quite some detail, and he seems to be an informant of some stripe since he was recording all this information for later, so fair odds he'd sell this info. That's enough for people to realize it's a thing that can be searched for, which means there'd now be a fair possibility that it could be found, since now we'd have people looking for a maze of this specific description in hopes of riches. I wouldn't be surprised if there were people looking for useful locations to hunt in the Ninth Circle, considering there are Wonders among other things in the depths.

If someone solves the maze, they'd get the maze-piece. They may not know what it's for, but they'd probably still see it's strange/rare enough to sell for a few Talents. And then, we'd have to engage in the fun activity of sleuthing around the whole Ninth Circle for the item, and then retrieving it from the new owner.

Formed From Pressure also works on spars correct? After we finish this duel we should Cultivate the Hummingbird's Dance and spar with Zhuan Kun once a week to make use of the added drive and hopefully impress and ally with a strong Noble. Maybe we can even invite him with Fa when we attempt the final Lost Armory location (if we ever beat the maze) because there will probably be a boss level fight involved.

edit
Nope lol.

If we're going to re-fight Zhuan, at the very least we should get Hummingbird to his previous level before we try again so we can impress him. He's definitely not static, though, so his martial art will be at a higher phase than that. That's why I said it's the very least that we should do.

(His level was equivalent to Hummingbird Phase 6, we're currently at Phase 4. If we go pure Cycling, we could do it in three actions with no RE, but I think that we've been neglecting our physical training, which is pretty bad considering we're talking about a mundane martial art. We should probably do actions for adding Athletics successes.)

As for Formed for Pressure and spars, we're not sure how it impacts combat, since Drive doesn't proc in combat. (Thank god, because if it did, combat would be utterly dominated by those with high Drive and we'd always lose.)

[X] Ask Jai Fa to go ahead to the Training ground, tell her we'll catch up.
-[X] Be friendly to Teng Lim, ask how his training has been going, offer congratulations on his progress with Elder Tantoi. Branch off into general conversation, maybe ask if he's ever thought about getting a charm to replace his spectacles?
--[X] If Teng Lim doesn't relax, give him your word that he is in no danger from us and ask what is wrong. If it's something we can help with offer aid.
---[X] If he still refuses to speak, tell him kindly but firmly that we do not appreciate being followed and ask him to leave. Then meet up with Jai Fa and resume preparations for the duel.

What other crafters do we know other than Jin and Shouxi? Just like a combat ranking ladder it seems likely that an unofficial crafter ranking exists. I'm just curious who takes the second and third place on those, because it's definitely not the Jin mutt.

Uh, please no splitting up guys.

We're too close to the duel to take any unnecessary risks, and Teng Lim is obviously a sacrificial pawn.

Those who coerced him into doing this did it despite him being ill-suited for this kind of thing, which tells me that he is not valued very much as a resource by them.

What risk?

Jai Fa would be keeping the charms, and she is tough enough that we don't need to worry.

Kong Zhi? Even if he's beaten up right now that wouldn't affect the duel at this point since KZ isn't going to be fighting

We are tougher together, and less vulnerable to any intrigue shenanigans together.

We can try and subvert Teng Lim if we want, but why would we ever want to split up?
