Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
I really liked the update, and I'm super glad that Ling Qi is talking to other people about the problem. It's everything I wanted from the conversation.

Also, the Dream realm is looking more and more intriguing by the second, and I can't wait to explore it more in-depth once PLR is up and running.

As for the talisman and dress, I agree with the armor and health as well as poise arguments.

I'm not sure I follow on the logic of health synergizing with drain, as intuitively to me from playing League of Legends like a pleb the natural thing to pair with lots of healing is lots of resists to expand the effective healthpool...but there's armor literally right there so eh.

Not a fan of using mechanics for character decisions.

Higher health means a larger safe zone for actually using that life-leech.

Otherwise it's easy to run into situations where it's unsafe to try and leech health back to heal, or in which you can't stop leeching lest you'd pop when it's otherwise tactically desirable.

It's also one-shot protection, 'cause you aren't leeching if you're dead.

And while I'm posting... @Thor's Twin, you've got a bit of a typo in your vote.

Higher health also takes advantage of Hanyi's damage reduction.

She can only No-sell up to C rank, and reduces damage of those stronger than that. So higher Health gives Hanyi more chances to leverage her DR.

[X][Talisman] Social Perception

Social Perception is not for personal development, its for Hanyi understanding who she's trying to influence, instead of doing counterproductive approaches to get attention but lose desire to assist.

Ling Qi closed her eyes for a moment, centering herself as she viewed the world through the lense of spirit. The whorls and eddies of qi that gathered in this place where the world was thin. The streaming curtains of silver lunar qi that wafted down from the night sky mingled with the free flowing streams of wind and water, and streamed down to permeate the stolid earth beneath her feet. She hummed the melody of harmony, and it came into even sharper focus.

She glimpsed the immaterial, fleeting traces of dream that hung over the silent stones like a curtain of invisible lace. She traced the dissolving current of one, and took the first step of the dance, as Sixiang had instructed her many times.
All is connected behind the scenes.
Hmm, wonder how that relates to tides...Moon qi tugging on the moon's reflection?
"Jesting aside, are you truly well, Qi?" Meizhen's voice reached her ears on subtle rhythms of thunder, emanating from the pillar of black water which occupied her friend's place in the spiritual world. The predatory plate sized golden eyes which stared out from those depths, implying a horror that lay beneath. Ling Qi knew those slitted eyes held only concern for her though, and so the primal fear washed from her mind like the water from a duck's feathers.
Spoopy. Trying to figure out how the liminal realm maps to conventional stuff seems liable to be difficult without intimate knowledge of the thing.
"Of course," Ling Qi replied, stepping to the unheard rhythm that Sixiang was humming in her head, following the phantom guidance of immaterial fingers tugging at the sleeves of her gown as she tried to match the flow of the dream. "Why do you ask?"

Her friend was silent for a moment, and Ling Qi twirled along with a whirl of energy, feeling her skirts fly out with the motion. "You cannot tell me that Gu Xiulan's exit from the Sect did not affect you. That the danger to your mortal family from the attack left you unruffled."

Ling Qi faltered for a second, and the wave of dream qi escaped her. She kept her eyes closed, but put on a smile. "Mother actually broke through to Red you know," she replied, deflecting.

"I am pleased for both her and you," Meizhen replied tersely. "But that is not the point."
Downsides of high Manipulation - when you need a friend to call you out on things they need to be skilled enough to see through your screen of concealing bullshit and close enough to know they can get away with it.
Ling Qi took a shuddering breath and reset her stance to the start of the dance. "It hurt to see Xiulan go. It hurt even more to know that my family was in danger and I was nowhere nearby," Ling Qi replied, forcing herself to resume the exercise. She felt Sixiang's arms around her shoulders, and her friends genuine concern, and the cold feeling that had arisen receded. "But what can I do?"

"Little," Meizhen replied sadly. "But I worry Ling Qi, what I have heard from you recently… You have always been adaptable, for the most part, but it is a large change. Are you certain that you are not haring off with new cultivation and arts to bury other concerns."

"Maybe a little," Ling Qi said, the honest words coming easily. Because it was Meizhen. It was easier to keep advancing, to keep marking off tasks from her mental checklist, to keep going with her day.
Well she's always haring off with new cultivation.
Just usually not Archive stuff :p
"Don't be unfair to yourself," Sixiang said quietly, their voice, tickling her ear. Her volume shifted, clearly addressing Meizhen. "I wasn't helping. I had my own troubles, and she helped me out, but the realization she had in doing it was genuine."

Again she stepped and she spun, riding out the whorl to glide across the ruined stones as her friend replied. "Is that so? And what realization was that, spirit?"

"That I had been making a lot of mistakes," Ling Qi said wryly. "Out of apathy, out of pride, out of a lot of things. The art I dug out of the archive helped a lot, but I doubt the lessons it's trying to teach would have sunk in without Sixiang."

The pillar of black, poisonous waters which represented Meizhen in her vision shuddered and swelled as the eyes within cut through her like knives, peering past her words and into her heart. "...I am not unhappy that you are no longer emulating my poorer habits," Meizhen said quietly. "If you feel that what you are doing now is truer to the self you wish to be, than I will merely be happy for you."
Bit of an ouch for Meizhen to realize she was the bad example here.
Happy that Ling Qi is over it, but still ouch.
This time, Ling Qi avoided missing a step, and continued to pick up the tempo of her dance, whirling more quickly in the eddies of dream, but Meizhen's words still struck home hard.
Kind of wonder how it looks from the outside. Blinking in and out as she dances?
"Is it something you are willing to speak of?" Meizhen asked cautiously.

If anyone else had asked, she would have said no. She wouldn't have mentioned it at all. Only Sixiang was really properly aware of her trouble, and that was because it was incredibly difficult to hide something from someone living in your head.

"You try though," Sixiang chuckled silently. "You goof."
Always to show strength and hide weakness.
The streets teach much the same lessons as the jungle.
"I can't stop pushing forward. I can't slow down. There's still so much path to travel," Ling Qi said frustrated. "But… I feel like I keep hurting the people I care about in pursuing my goal. Zhengui wants to fight beside me, but I keep leaving him behind. Because it always seems like the best option in the moment. My mother wants to be part of my life, but she's only barely a cultivator and there's so little she can do. And, if it keeps going like this, I'm going to leave others behind. Li Suyin just barely reached full third realm and I'm already heading for the fourth step. Xiulan almost killed herself trying to keep up with me!" The words poured out in an ugly torrent, and she lost the step of her dance, stumbling as reality reasserted itself. "She opened her eyes, turning to look at Meizhen seated upon the stone, looking at her with worried eyes.

"I don't want to be alone again, but I can't stop growing stronger."

In a way, Meizhen's own unceasing growth was a great comfort, as much as it frustrated her in spars, knowing that her friend would always be there, a step or two ahead, was a balm in other ways.
And there's the root of the Heart Demon - Ling Qi can't really accept, deep down, that you can matter without personal power. Thats rooted in her SCS growth insight, so she can't just pluck it out either.
Meizhen stared at her for a long moment, her eyes fractionally wider than usual, an expression that would have been gaping in surprise for anyone else. "...Ling Qi, you cannot expect everyone in your life to match your cultivation. That is a path which holds only pain."
This sounds a lot like a clan cautionary tale behind that.
"I know that," Ling Qi replied, frustrated. "But… what would you do, if Cui stalled out in the third realm? How would you deal with that?"

"Do not ever let her hear you posit such a thing," Meizhen huffed. "But… I would make room in my life for my cousin, no matter her strength. Those who rule must be the strongest, else we would collapse into warlordism and chaos, but there are many roles in this world which are not ruling. You cannot remain connected to others without giving of yourself. To imagine otherwise is utter selfishness, more than even you have displayed at your worst."
Meizhen's words cut, but… she wasn't wrong. "I don't want to hurt them," she whispered. "I know I can't be like that, but how do you reconcile that with cultivation?"

Meizhen pursed her lips, looking away. "It is impossible to relate to others without hurting and being hurt in turn. We fear, and we are feared," her words sounded final, as if to her it was some absolute truth. "But pains and fears have worth, when they bring us the happiness of companionship. There is more to strength than raw might."
Cui: "The mouse has grown bold. Perhaps she should be bitten, lest she gets into the grain."

Her statement has the ring of interesting peeks at Bai art insights.
"Those who rule must be the strongest, else we would collapse into warlordism and chaos" - This particularly sounds like a philosophy tied closely to their conception of leadership
", but there are many roles in this world which are not ruling. " - And this particular part an advanced insight over that?
"You cannot remain connected to others without giving of yourself. " - This is an odd one, the Earth art she picked up?
"It is impossible to relate to others without hurting and being hurt in turn. We fear, and we are feared, But pains and fears have worth, when they bring us the happiness of companionship. There is more to strength than raw might." - ...err, we seem to have caused a Heart Demon with lakegate and how it wrapped up.

I suppose it did make her a stronger person as a result.

"I won't be," Ling Qi chuckled. "How about you, what is the Bai's take on the Sect's mobilization?"

"I will not be participating in any offensives," Meizhen looked conflicted about that. If Ling Qi had to guess… she was pleased at the clear indication that she was valued, but displeased at being prevented from raising her clan's name. "But I will fully cooperate with any defensive measures the Sect wishes to take. I will be receiving some training in Argent Sect's tactics and warfare under a core disciple for the next month."
Nowhere better to park a Bai than on defense though!
"Congratulations," Ling Qi said sincerely. "I hope you do well."

"You as well. Let your enemies be driven before you," Meizhen replied, looking up at the sky.
And hear the lamentations of their accountants.
Ling Qi nodded, following her gaze up to the clear night sky. Well as clear as it could be, with the titanic dragon floating up there. "Ah, you know, are you still up for a little shopping?"

"Hmm?" Meizhen gave her a questioning look.

"For Hanyi," Ling Qi said. "She's going to be performing with me, at this weekend's party, and Lady Cai got together some equipment funds," of course, her new dress and talismans would be more useful for the expedition, but she didn't want to ruin the girl's fun.

"I do not see why not," Meizhen said with a touch of amusement. "I suppose someone will have to take the place of your taste, with Gu Xiulan absent."

"I am not that bad," Ling Qi scoffed, leaning back in her seat. It was good to spend time with her best friend.
#Savagery
You know, I would assume that what Meizhen just did (sharing of the foundations of ther Insights) is a pretty intimate thing for cultivators.
Deadly dangerous, if you know the insights well enough you could deliberately attack their cultivation base by forcing paradoxes.

Oh, that's a great way to put it. Ling Qi devaluing her past self, and unconsciously placing lower worth on people without a lot of power... and she can't quite wrap her head around imbalanced but healthy relationships, either.

Well. Can you blame LQ for that though? The votes have been fairly consistent with only dealing with "weaklings" only when there is no longer any convenient way to avoid interacting with them.

She's learning what it means to be the one with power for the first time in her life, and weakness reminds her too much of what she wanted to leave behind.

Hmm with poise it might be we can avoid her getting into trouble as much such as with lightning girl snatchin our green stone, on the other hand perception would go for more schemes that give a more likely chance of success, however there is also just straight up buffing her with everything else.

Ehhh leaning on the fence, not feelin anything callin out to me talisman is your all's problem.
Edit- Fellin it now want her to be more sturdy in a fight rather than have some weird talisman messing with her brain

Do you know what I'm finding particularly intriguing right now? Ling Qi doesn't seem to be actually using PLR to step into the dream during this training, just pure skill, which I find fantastic. I think the more natural it is for her to enter the Dream without the need for arts, the more readily accessible the Dream and whatever treasures it holds will become to Ling Qi.

without the need for arts,
Well, LQ already got that lesson about how Arts are just crutches made so that it would be easier for lower realm cultivators to emulate specific things done by those of a higher realm.

And also how, like CRX, some (we dont really have enough info to see the ratio) have their domain/focus/whatever turned inward so it is less obvious that they are also working towards emulating their arts into self learned skills.

But pains and fears have worth, when they bring us the happiness of companionship.

Though a path might be hard and lonely, it has worth if you can present something of beauty to those you care for at the end.

Is that Meizhen's take on LQ's insight, but adapted to her own personal key concepts? Or perhaps a different, yet similar insight that Meizhen herself arrived to? It certainly sounds insight-like.

Hardship and loneliness, which is what the former street rat, Ling Qi, has struggled with all of her life.
Pain and fear, which likely Meizhen underwent growing up as a Bai, probably among conspirators, assassination attempts, and let's not forget her mother's execution and her father's... absence.

Both of these serve to turn the bad things each girl suffers from into something they can draw benefits from. Turn them from a nuisance into a resource, thant brings about something they cherish. Something of beauty for the sake of those important to one, and the happiness of companionship.

Interesting to muse about, to say the least.

I think it's fascinating how well Taoist philosophy of the setting here is melding with the conventions of writing and narrative. This is two cultivators sharing their Insights while practicing, which gives the audience "insight" into the characters, which also gives the characters "insights" into eachother and themselves. Works on at least 3 levels, which is excellente *chef's kiss* que buenissimo

Meizhen is potentially the front runner for Heir of White Bai Clan. Her insights here are important, because in societies with Warrior Scholars like this setting you *really* need a robust understanding of the power of the commons or you'll eventually get rebels. Scary rebels.

"Those who rule must be the strongest, else we would collapse into warlordism and chaos" - this is basically how the Bai Clans created their civilization. Zheng are warlordism-adjacent with their Water Margins style chaos, and Heavenly Peaks has always had a hard time wrassling the Bai into compliance because their emperors *must* be the strongest or else the Bai will grow bold and unruly.

"there are many roles in this world which are not ruling." - This is obviously true, but it's possible that this insight (or statement) is talking about the respect due to other castes. The tug of war between You Must Be Strongest To Rule and the Respect NonRuling Caste is a delicate tug for a ruling caste, since over investment in Respect can become an area you can be taken advantage of in. Simultaneously, if you have too many generations that lack that respect you end up with Warlordism. Because this "The ruler must be strongest" is technically not the same as "the strongest becomes ruler". Sun's Rebellion is basically a degeneration back to Warlordism because it was preferable to many when compared to the Ruling Caste's despotism. Tyranny, governance of the Tyrant, was coined by some Athenian elites who hated the populist "Tyrant" of Athens who had ousted them as the first example of StrongMan anti-elitist politics within a democratic republic. Ideally the Tyrant class of the White Bai would be both the strongest *and* the most in tune with the common powers. That's how the eldest sister won in the first place after all, allying with the youngest and weakest since Social Alliance is the easiest way to get a combat advantage against relative peers. Raw Numbers. 2v1. EZ win.

Sun's Rebellion is evidence that there was some sort of deep mismanagement of the Bai tenets. It would seem to me that the mismanagement was a degradation of the "Noblesse Oblige" or Nobel Obligation of the Noble Strong to the Common Mortal. Usually people say "absolute power corrupts absolutely" but that's not accurate in my opinion. Absolute Power reveals the Truth of the holder, by allowing them to act on their desires however they wish. The only constraint on a Tyrant is the social codes of the previous Tyrants. There were many Roman Emperors that were "Good Emperors" but it only takes one to significantly buck the social constraints without consequence and the ties break down and the system collapses. Meizhen has the disposition to be a Good Tyrant. Someone that can take absolute power and leverage it for great destruction, but also great kindness. We know little of Bai Suzhen but she's a reformer and I assume she recognizes the special-ness of Meizhen <3 yay best snek

"You cannot remain connected to others without giving of yourself. " - eeyup. The Father and Mother Who Were had to suffer through great calamity to be able to interact and communicate and create Reality with one another. This works alongside the next insight stretch.

"It is impossible to relate to others without hurting and being hurt in turn. We fear, and we are feared, But pains and fears have worth, when they bring us the happiness of companionship. There is more to strength than raw might." - There's an Anime called BACCANO! that has a character posit that "Mercy and compassion are virtues that only the strong are privileged to possess." and I think Meizhen would agree. In a Death World, sometimes the desperate path is taken and kindness must be sacrificed for survival. To Choose Kindness, To Choose Compassion, To Choose Mercy, these things are heavy. Though they take Strength to carry, they aren't burdens they're capable of great power when wielded. That's the piece that is mistaken for LQ and many forms of media I've read/seen/heard. Being Righteous is a tremendous power. There is a video on youtube of Mr Rogers appealing to Congress to not cut funding for PBS. He's asked about what sort of lessons his show tries to teach children. He sings most of a song he wrote, and causes many of the Congress people to tear up and they drop the proposed cuts on the spot. It's like a stage play, but really. Being Good, Sincere and Righteous is powerful. It's just really damn difficult lolol

We are having an issue here that somewhat comes back to our core. We want both the wings of freedom and the roots/vines of connections. It's extra work to be sure, but looking at it like a *burden* is the problem. This could very well be a deep well of strength, but we're in need of socialization. To see the value of social ties and social networks. To see the strength of the commons, the strength of systems and collections of people. We understand the lonely aspect of our nature, the wings, but *truly* understanding the Strengths of our roots is perhaps the theme of Threads overall. The social aspect, how we choose to engage with it, and where our core moral values and goals will be when the Grand Arc of History inevitably starts popping off is very important for subsequent installments. I'm very excited. I didn't even talk about how cool the liminal plane is! ahh! Another time for sure.

Thank you for coming to my effort post! Here is a heart for you <3 I hope you're doing well <3
