I think a book of myths and fables with illustrations would suit best at the moment. I want the flute also because of obvious reasons, but more because expressing oneself is innately tied to cultivation. Both options would give Biyu the studiousness she needs while still keeping that wild thing she's got going for her.

I doubt teaching us music is one of her regrets. That seems more related to the pushiness and criticisms than what she considers to be part of a young lady's proper education. Also, Ling Qi literally plays music via her simple presence, I really doubt Qingge is going to suddenly think music lessons are inappropriate for Biyu.

I'm not saying that she's going to start teaching the child immediately, but it doesn't really matter to the question of whether Biyu will receive music lessons at some point either. We're not really in a hurry here.

It should have a bunch of small pictures for small entries and as many beautiful two-page or one-page spreads as it can hold.

For formation effects, we should go with durability - so that mortals and young cultivators don't accidentally tear or damage the pages - and if there's space, a thing to make some of the pictures MOVE a little. It shouldn't be too expensive - Meizhen did the thing with the moving needlework, remember; if an early green who's not a dedicated artist can do that, even if she's a scion of the big Bai clan, then a dedicated artist cultivator would probably be able to do something like that pretty easily.

The ideas shared so far are great, but besides some slight variation everyone is suggesting the same things. Here are some random ideas if anyone is interested. I'm wasn't trying to think of something good with this list—I don't even know if some of it is possible—just different.
  • Magical sand box
  • An outfit designed for outside play (temperature regulated, self-cleaning, grows with her, etc.)
  • Slingshot with returning ammo
  • Toy tools she can use to explore and play (could be gardening, bug catching, digging, or any other sort of tools)
  • If it doesn't have to be a material gift we could introduce her to a pony and get her some lessons
  • Small portable tent (good for reading outdoors)
  • Magnifying glass
  • We could plant a special tree in the garden for her and give her the solemn responsibility to take care of it
  • Art journal and some sketching/coloring utensils
  • A magical kite
  • Toy bow and arrow
  • Puzzle
  • Umbrella that lets you play in the rain and stay dry
  • Tea set
As a final note, I've worked with kids before and I've never seen them happier than when they use what's naturally around them along with their imagination to make their own toys.

1. Shuttlecock

A very classic Chinese children's game, the most recent Nezha movie had it as an actual plot point. You can play it by yourself or with others: I assume this would make Biyu more athletic, but it's also a good way to socialize with other kids as it's pretty popular.



2. Ant Cricket

You might remember Crickee from Mulan. I wouldn't normally suggest this as to me it looks like a pet, but it's literally on this (9 Traditional Chinese Toys And Games) list of traditional Chinese toys and games. Since it's supposed to be melodious, I assume music and beast handling are the directions it moves.



3. Wooden Weapons

I doubt we'll go for these, but they're in most touristy gift shops in China and I assume they're a popular toy. Obviously a more martial gift, but unless she's being trained with it, also an opportunity to socialize.



4. Fortune Sticks

I feel these are a little unnatural, but it's got words and it's got divination going for it. I feel that it's pretty flavorful and given the Great Diviner, it'd probably be pretty popular. Maybe Sixiang might suggest it?

I'd feel remiss if I didn't at least try suggesting some traditional Chinese toys and games.

Technically they're religious apparatus/lucky charms.
Sort of like buying an Evil Eye for a souvenir

Giving her a music related gift isn't really necessary, considering our/Qingge's inclinations will already positively incline Biyu in that direction anyway.

I don't mind the picture book winning, but I feel the arts set is a more active way of allowing Biyu to feel her appreciation for the outdoors, as well as providing another outlet for expression.
