Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

You want to spoil a surprise so you can give Missy a name that screams "if you see this kind of animal acting weird, I'm totally nearby so get ready for a cape fight that you wouldn't have known about beforehand"? Am I reading this request right? Cause that's what it sounds like.

Not really, but fine, point taken.

[X] (Missy) Dispatch
[X] (Laura) Hailstrike
[X] (Kayleigh) Musketeer

Missy is fast so she can be a first responder, and can summon help, so Dispatch.
Laura, female Nordic Warrior, Valkyrie.
Kayleigh is harder, I was thinking something like Revolve or Revolver, or Revolution, but they don't quite fit, so Musketeer is good.

I feel like the Nordic associations run dangerously close to Neo-Nazi associations, so I left hailstrike for that reason.

Uh...no, it seems like it makes perfect sense to have a name which is in line with 70%+ of how she fights.

Because the problem isn't advertising what she can do, but winding up with a name completely out of alignment with what she uses OR picking a completely generic, unrelated name to avoid such issues.
Then don't specify an animal? You have all sorts of things to base a thematic name off of. Summoning, her speed, her khopesh.

Not to mention, quite a few cape canonical names either have nothing to do with the cape's power or are tangentially related.

Alexandria
Legend
Eidolon
Hero
Dragon
Myrddin
Regent
Parian
Chevalier
Sphere
Vista
Kid Win
Gallant
Triumph
Grue
Menja/Fenja
Cricket
Oni Lee
Kaiser
Allfather
Marquis

It doesn't have to be a perfect match to their powerset. In fact, I'd says it's better NOT to have your power describe exactly what you can do.

Oooh, I really like Capella as a name for Missy. (I was going to suggest calling her Vista 2: The Reckoning :D /jk)

[X] (Missy) Capella
[X] (Laura) Hailstrike
[X] (Kayleigh) Musketeer
[X] (Device) Blitzfire
[X] (Team) Arcana

Just to clarify
Cappella is Italian for chapel.
Capella is the sixth brightest star in the night sky.

Works well enough for me. Themed except for Missy it is.

[X] (Missy) Overrun
It's simple, but describes both her ability to run fast and summoning tactics. Dispatch is a good second choice though.
It's also a Pathfinder maneuver for moving past an enemy
And not something you'd think of as a little girl being able to 'run over' someone on foot.

[X] (Laura) Scathach
Not the clearest choice, but so far the best of the lot since it at least ties back to her device Fragarach
As much as I want a variant on Milady de Winter to tie in with Kayleigh taking the name Musketeer, Milady de Winter is a villain in the novel and most movie adaptations.
Sadly most named Winter / White Queens are Evil, so finding a good one to reference is hard.

[X] (Kayleigh) Musketeer
-[X] (Kayleigh) Magical Musketeer Shining Shot in her head
Sadly my brain fails to come up with a good pun along the lines of The Lone Gunmen and Calamity is already taken so we can't go with a variant on Calamity Jane.
[X] (Device) Starlight Trigger
Remember, her device isn't actually a GUN, so Starlight Blaster is a bit of a misnomer.

[X] (Team) Night Sisters
I'd argue that's just the right amount of Edge for a bunch of teen girls with magic powers about to put the boot to the Fallen. When / If they get male members or they grow older they may change it up to Arcana, but I think they can afford to be a bit edgy when their lead member is Calamity Witch.

Grue
Cricket

I'll point out that Grue's name is literally old English for "Darkness" so... exactly what his power does.
Cricket's power is the Echolocation effect, which ties back to a cricket's chirping. Granted it's a tangential relation, but a Thinker could figure out the connection in seconds of seeing her fight.

Am I really the only one who finds Arcana to be kinda generic?

If you have no idea, would you maybe consider voting with me for Fimbul? I think the apocalyptic winter of viking mythology would fit her.

I thought "Grue" meant "Horror" in old English, not darkness. You know, as in "gruesome".
Vista's name is also tangentially related to her power. I think SW was just counting names of people whose names weren't on the nose obvious.

Especially considering what they'd do to prove they actually did what they claimed. It came to me last night as I was falling asleep, and "hardcore" might be an understatement.

As for male members, as long as they wear poofy skirts it's all okay.

Correct. Some tie-in is fine, but it doesn't need to say "this is exactly what I do".

[X] (Missy) Aeon
[X] (Laura) Aurora
[X] (Kayleigh) Stardust

Y'all need to come up with better names. :p

[X] (Missy) Capella
[X] (Laura) Scathach
[X] (Kayleigh) Deschain
[X] (Device) Thunderer

Laura is gonna be a celtic-inspired pole-arm user, and none of you thought about the spearwoman? Shame, shame on all of you!

For Kayleigh I'm surprised no one thought of Billy the Kid, and Dark Tower being mentioned during the conversation about her powerset really stuck to me.

(To those not in the know, Deschain is the surname of the main character from Stephen King's the Dark Tower series. He was a knight gunslinger descendant from King Arthur who travels through worlds and wastelands seeking to save the Dark Tower from collapsing).

@Silently Watches, it was mentioned that the OG Calamity Witch was part of the Galean imperial guard, did this group have a name we could call back?

I know this should be asked in a ask-Perfect Storm-about-lore vote, but given how those go...

If you have no idea, would you maybe consider voting with me for Fimbul? I think the apocalyptic winter of viking mythology would fit her.
Fimbul means great or large, Vetr is Winter, the full word is Fimbulvetr, more modernly called Fimbulwinter.

Also Einherjar are the dead warriors tended to by Valkyries and I see Laura as more the latter than the former.

Cricket, Oni Lee, Grue, Sphere, Vista, Myrddin, Regent and Parian all tell you what they do.

Cricket bounces around like a bug, uses appropriate weapons and chirps constantly
Oni Lee is named for a demon known to teleport
Grue is a small monster who hunts and consumes you in dark places
Sphere built environmental bubbles
Vista manipulates space, creating wide vista's and bringing the horizon to her
Myrddin creates a thousand and one magical effects by carving portals into a stick
Regent commands any number of minions by taking over their nerves
Parian attacks you with dolls. Cloth in story, but also parahuman skin puppets according to Wildbow.

Edit: I would have preferred Missy to be ___ Grimoire, but I could t find a word to fit. *shrugs* as a nod to Calamity Witch.

[X] (Missy) Red Comet
Fits both her new coloring and her moveset. And everybody's expecting miss move-fast-strike-hard by the name so they won't see the summons coming. :D

[X] (Laura) Scathach
I kinda want to do an ice name but most of these are just too flat. So instead I return to the world of mix-n-match Irish mythology and grab the name of one of the top badasses in the cycles. Because I have no imagination.

[X] (Kayleigh) Lady Sureshot
"Bishoujou Senshi Lady Sureshot" in the full, of course, but nobody but Kayleigh uses the full name for anything. :D

[X] (Device) Aimbot
I admit I like the idea of Kayleigh being the silly one of the team. Well, her and Cassie anyway.

[X] (Team) Judgement Guard
It's just a little edgy but the historian in me thinks about the Soviet Night Witches who rained down hell on the Nazis, and what do you know we've got a Nazi infestation in Philly...
[HELL MARCH INTENSIFIES]

I still like Night Sisters better, but it doesn't have the votes and honestly Judgement Guard is way better'n Arcana, so change the vote we go.

Poor Tim, truly the nerd they keep in a closet and force to hammer out Rings of Power.

[X] (Missy) Capella
Honestly, I just don't want Missy to be Dispatch, so this is mostly a strategic vote... it'll change if something else moves up the list.
[X] (Laura) Scathach
Let's have absolutely no theme what so ever to our names! At least Laura has a cool one.

[X] (Kayleigh) - Sailor Shining Shot
[X] (Device) Starlight Trigger
Far, far too tempting. Bring on the Mahou Shoujo Kayleigh, bring it on.

[X] (Team) Arcana
We have a fair consensus on the team name at least.

I do kind of wish we were going fully edgy and pretentious and following the Calamity Witch theme though. But that's just not happening right now.
