Magical Girl Escalation Taylor (Worm/Nanoha)

Hmm, with that thought, maybe we should ask Dragon about any parahumans who can erase memories. That would be a good thing to have on hand for those victims.
Hard as it may be to believe, Strangers with this kind power are… a little thin on the side of law and order. As in, the very very VERY few of them who exist are all villains.

Canon shows that the Protectorate and Guild are willing to work with villains when their abilities are most called for. Hiring them to help a few people would get them a lot of brownie points with the law. Of course, they have no way of knowing(short of super-thinkers) that the remaining Endbringers likely have less than a year to live, and the threat of Scion is gone, and we can generate high powered parahuman equivalents without conflict drives pretty quickly, so they have no idea that the unwritten rules are likely to face some revisions soon.

Regardless of that, though, cooperating with people helping Grey Boy victims would, at worst, be a factor in their eventual trials and sentencing. It is unlikely to hurt us to ask, at the least.

Though, wouldn't it be a Master effect? Making people forget that you are there is definitely a Stranger power, but erasing large chunks of somebody's memory sounds more Master to me. With all the overlap the categories have, I'm sure there have already been numerous debates on the subject on PHO.

I'd say no, because they aren't CONTROLLING anyone. Very creative use could influence someone, but considering the response to Masters involves watching out for minions, I don't thing they would qualify for that rating.

Now manipulating memories, like slipping yourself in and making someone think you're their loved one or boss or something? That would get a Master rating.

Having just finished binging this after it being in my 'to read' list for forever, I would like to point out that, if it hasnt been mentioned, that Sparkys Nanite Cannon could be incredibly useful in the field of astro-engeneering.

Dragon is looking at going into space again? Then what about redesigning the nanites so they an tear apart asteroids to build space stations, fuel depots, manufacturing centers, and or simply refining raw resources?

Putting material into orbit is something that is resource intensive, and while she could deploy ground fabricated stations, vehicles, raw material and such via teleporter, theres a lot more allready up there. Not to mention theres the possability of it being a long shot method of surviving the endbringers that doesnt rely upon alternate earths or TSAB, grab an ateroid and hollow it out or send some nanotes to the moon with regular shipments or deliveries of raw material. Lettem build.

Besides, space is a pretty big motivator. By returning to space in a big way, Earth-Bet could be seen as being on the road to recovery or at the very least isnt going to die on their homeworld.

This vote is one of those tough ones that I don't like. You'd think looking at it that it would be fairly simple; mutagenics and analyzing the cannon have 9 votes each, putting them in the lead. Looking over the plans, however, it seems like every single one of them was just one item off from another plan. With that kind of similarity, the only fair thing to do is to take them all line by line:

Experiment with Mutagenics: 27
Grey Boy bubble-popper: 17
Help out the Enforcers (and most of the votes were for 1 slot): 14
Prosthetic eye for Alexandria: 13
Arm Vista's armor: 11
Analyze Sparky's cannon: 9
Teleporter armory: 4
Rust grenade: 1

Therefore, what Tim will do is mutagenics, the bubble-popper, the eye, and then assist the Enforcers. The only votes for a skill purchase were all for Strike Boost, so that's getting thrown in too.

And since my insomnia is acting up, have another chapter! (Yes, that is the reason I'm closing the vote at such an awkward time.)

Suntan 13.2

Friday, July 29

You raise your hands over your head and stretch, trying your best to get rid of the knots that developed after spending three and a half hours sitting in an uncomfortable chair. Flight was already the spell you loved the most, but after experiencing commercial airplanes for the first time, there is absolutely no way you are ever flying anywhere not under your own power.

Not to mention, you spent the entire flight cramped in the window seat while Kayleigh interrogated Missy. It was obvious from the start that she did not believe that you had been Missy's math tutor back in Brockton Bay – which in hindsight is clearly your own fault for telling her in advance that just about anyone you invited on this trip would be a cape – but either Kayleigh is far cleverer than you ever gave her credit for or she does not care that Missy is a hero, because none of her questions had anything to do with masked escapades or secret identities. No, she was intent on wringing out all the juicy information about everything else in Missy's life.

You can sympathize with Missy's deer in the headlights expression. Looking back at it, you went through much the same when you first met Kayleigh, just spread out over several weeks.

Thinking about your companions makes you turn your gaze away from the luggage carousel to look instead at Dragon. It is so strange to see her the size of a regular human, even if other than that she looks nearly identical to her normal self. Explaining Dragon and Cassiel's presence is easier than Missy's, and the idea was one you actually took from Kayleigh. Instead of two fairies, you brought your 'aunt', Diana Richter, and her daughter Cassandra, affectionally known as Cassie. Dragon had spent the last couple of days asking you everything she could think of about your family to help sell the illusion that she is your mother's sister, and so far the story seems to be holding up.

Diana's face shifts to a frown with a fluidity that makes it hard to believe she is actually a gynoid body Dragon is controlling from within. "Huh."

"Huh, what?"

"Tim asked me something," she says, her accent that of a native Bostonian rather than her normal Vancouver. You had never realized how easy it was to manipulate digitized speech like that, though that might be because the only person you have ever seen do such a thing is the uncontested master of computer wizardry. "It just caught me off-guard."

Now your curiosity is piqued. Diana looks around at the crowd surrounding you and continues telepathically, «He wanted Legend's contact information. The first reason is because he plans to start working on the device to break Grey Boy's bubbles and wanted to know who to get in touch with when it comes time to coordinate things.»

«I remember how much he freaked out over that,» you reply, thinking back to that day. «I'm glad he's willing to give it a try. Considering what I've heard about Grey Boy's victims… Eee. But what do you mean, 'first reason'?»

«After he gets that information, he said he was going to offer to build a working prosthetic eye for Alexandria.»

«He what? How does he plan to do that? If Endbringers can't injure her, I doubt he could do surgery to implant the thing.»

Diana shakes her head. «He doesn't have to do any surgery. You told us she has a Linker Core, remember? That means she can receive telepathic communication.»

«…And he talked a while ago about how he could make telepathic radios.» You shake your head at the idea of giving Alexandria a replacement eye that would actually work. «Wow. What was he doing that this thought even crossed his mind?»

«I… might have cajoled him into experimenting with the mutagenic serums he learned to make after analyzing Bakuda's Crawler bomb.» The sheepish grin she gives you is very un-Dragon. «I can understand not wanting to make a huge batch and dump it in the water supply or something equally stupid, but his fear about what he could be capable of was starting to hinder him and would only become worse in the long run. Once he knows what he can do with it, I will not push him one way or another on it, but he needs to understand that knowledge itself is neither good nor evil. It is what we choose to do with our knowledge that determines what kind of people we are.

«I can only presume that one of his experiments pointed him towards healing in some matter or another, and that in turn led to the idea of giving Alexandria the prosthetic.»

You walk over to the carousel when it brings you your bag, your mind still reeling at the implications of what you just heard. You never realized just what kind of drama happened in Dragon's workshop between her and Tim. That they might have disagreements from time to time is obvious, but something like this? And then what he doing now, giving Alexandria sight again…

To be entirely honest, you are happy now more than ever you chose the magical template you did. All you need is someone pointing you at a target and telling you to blast it, not the thorny issues of morality that have been plaguing Tim. You run into more than enough of those on your own even with straightforward powers.

"How much longer till we can stretch out and relax?" you ask Kayleigh when everyone has collected their bags and is walking towards the car rental kiosks near the exit.

The other girl huffs. "We still have an hour to go. That's the part I hate about coming here; the resort's nice and all, but it takes a bit to get there."

"An hour?" you repeat, hoping you heard her wrong. "An hour in another tin can?"

"Welcome to how normal people live," she tells you in a mutter that is just barely audible over the noise of the rest of the crowd around you. "Not everyone can fly, you know."

With nine people on this venture, you have little choice but to split into two cars. Sliding into the front passenger seat beside Diana, you lean your head back against the headrest and sigh.

"That went well," the Unison Device–piloted robot body says.

"If that was good, I don't want to know what bad looks like," Missy mutters from the back. Samantha, who changed into her raccoon form to save space in the car, crawls into her lap and nuzzles her chin, causing the girl to giggle.

Diana starts the car and plays with the radio for a moment before finding a techno station. Because of course she would. "Trust me, that was good. For two of us who have no legal identities and had to make everything up in the last couple of days and another who has four ears and a tail, no one gave us a second look or questioned anything about our pasts. As first impressions go, we were utterly unremarkable."

"I meant to ask about that," the younger girl remembers, looking down at the Guardian Beast. "What happened to them? I was worried you would stand out, but when we all showed up at the airport you looked completely normal."

Diana laughs and sets the car into motion. "That's something I cooked up a couple of nights back. Did you see the necklace she was wearing? It projects a minor hologram over her to hide her animal features. It isn't perfect, and it won't keep people from feeling them if they bump into her, but for casual activities it is well worth the effort."

xxxxxxxxxxxxx

After an hour in the car with Dragon, you and Missy are happy to arrive at the resort on a small island just a short bridge off the mainland. Partly because it means you can stretch your legs again; mostly because Dragon is a firm believer in the maxim, 'whoever drives controls the radio'. Checking in is quick, and then everyone runs to their rooms to change into swimsuits to head to the beach.

You tap your finger impatiently as you wait for Missy to finish changing in the bathroom. Cassiel already helped Dragon redress Diana thanks to her telekinesis, and you get a front row seat to seeing how she deals with clothing. Your expectation of amusement fades when the child-size and wingless fairy returns to normal size before transforming again, this time dressed in an age-appropriate one-piece.

You suppose you cannot really hold it against her, though. The two of you are the only ones who do not have to physically change their clothing. And speaking of…

"Remember what I said, Storm," you warn your Intelligent Device. "Nothing too risqué like you did when we went diving for the radio."

"But nothing too prudish, either," Samantha chimes. You give her a look, and she just smiles at you before fiddling with her necklace. Her ears and tail shimmer into invisibility as she sticks her tongue out at you.

«Recalibrating.» Orange light washes over you, and you look down at yourself with a sigh. Even with the brass rings holding the pieces of the bikini together, it still covers more skin than that first attempt. You will give Perfect Storm that much, at least.

Missy finally comes out wearing the same swimsuit she bought in Sydney, and the five of you troop down to the water.

The first hour on the beach you are content to sit back in a chair and sunbathe, especially after you adjust the particulars of your Barrier Jacket to only allow just a touch of ultraviolet light in, and only for the first ten minutes. After that, you just lay back and luxuriate in the warmth.
Tanning is bad. We all know it. Don't do this. #SVMedicine
You blink after a while, realizing with a slight bit of embarrassment that you took a short nap. Rubbing sleep or maybe sand from your eyes, you look around you. Where is everyone?

To one side, you find Kayleigh's mother talking quietly with Samantha and Diana. They are too far away for you to hear normally, though you are sure that if you wanted, Perfect Storm could amplify their words. Turning around at the sound of footsteps in sand, you find Mr. Stevens hurriedly walking away, a phone plastered to his ear. On the other side, you see Kayleigh and Laura wandering off. Kayleigh happens to turn around right at that moment and waves towards you. "Couple of guys challenged us to a volleyball game. Come on!"

You give her a wave back that is as noncommittal as such motions can be. Something pings in the back of your mind, and you look around as panic fills you. «Dragon! Where's Cassiel?!»

«Don't worry about it,» Dragon says, sounding remarkably unconcerned over the fact the two of you lost an Endbringer. «She's fine.»

That at least sounds like someone who has everything under control. You are still worried about what could be happening, but something else catches your eye before you can argue. Namely, Missy walking up out of the water and dropping into a chair on the other end of the row from you. You would not call her expression 'pensive', per se, but it certainly is not content.

Mind made up about what you will do now, you stand out of your chair and start walking.

Mana overload at 35%.
"Illusion necklace" added to Key Items (Samantha).
"Diana Richter" added to Dragon's character sheet.

Seems like getting Missy out of Philly for a bit might not have been as successful as we would have preferred.
I think it is proving successful in ways we hadn't really intended.

We've talked a lot about Vista's child soldier issues and the conflict that is generating with the Protectorate/PRT. However something we haven't really touched on is her social isolation. On my part because I hadn't really thought about it until this update hit a few red flags for me.

Back in Brockton Bay Vista had a well established life. Sure she was technically a child soldier but there is a world of difference between how she was treated and how IRL child soldiers are treated. She had comrades among her peers (the Wards) and the respect of her seniors. Sure there were some issues due to her age but she was generally respected as a highly capable cape. On top of that she had her parents, as troubling as their relationship was, and if not friends then at least casual acquaintances at school.

In Philidelphia life is very different. Vista has no one she can call a peer among the Wards for both her agemates are vastly less experiance and the two older Wards she has dealt with have caused her serious distress. Things aren't good in the superior department either; they view her as a literal problem child and she can't even rely on her one familiar face (Miss MIlitia) for help because MM is a follower who will go along with whatever Chevalier, who Vista pretty clearly hates at this point, says.

In her civilian life things are even worse. Vista's parents are both dead and her new guardian is Miss Militia, which is problematic due to the above reasons. As for school; well on top of transferring in not simply mid-term, which always makes friends harder, but halfway through term three she lost her arm just two weeks later. Vista didn't get her replacement for another two weeks. So by the time she got back there would have only been a month of school left.

Basically Vista has no friends at work, no friends at home, and no friends at school. She is isolated and surrounded by people who at best don't care about her (school) and at worst view her as a problem (work). The only posative relationships Vista has is with Team Calamity.

Calamity Witch respects Vista's abilities, views her as a peer, and enjoys spending time with her (to the point we've gone on multiple vacations/adventure with her). Shipwright and Dragon both serve to fulfill the role of superior, albeit more in the older sense then command sense, who respects her for her without treating her as a child. Sam and Cassie aren't quite peers like Calamity Witch nor psudeo-superiors like Shipwright and Dragon but they are both quite friendly towards her.

Right now Vista is probably thinking about how while this is the sort of thing she would have, if they ever had the time, done with the Wards back in Brockton Bay she couldn't imagine going on vacation, let alone enjoying it, with the Philly Wards.

Basically I think Vista is having a realization about who her real friends and colleagues are.

As for what triggered all this on my part? It was this line:
You can sympathize with Missy's deer in the headlights expression. Looking back at it, you went through much the same when you first met Kayleigh, just spread out over several weeks.
because it got me thinking about how pre-trigger/Storm Taylor was basically in the same position as Vista socially. No friends, no colleagues, no family. And we all saw what happened to Taylor when she finally found a friendly group willing to accept her. Vista doesn't even have the baggage of Team Calamity being villains or her intially planning to betray them that Canon!Taylor did.

We've dropped out on many an opportunity in this quest. Let's finish at least one thing to the end and help Vista help Taylor help her help herself.
