I am surprised that Verge didn't improved his void step after using it so much.

If he's part of a hidden resistance, then helping us in such an obvious way would be too dangerous for him. Hence why he waited till we were down in the deep deep.
Verge's rookie form is far less conspicuous. Being only like six feet tall and all.
Say, what determines casting? Must the numbers be spoken or does it just have to be the right sound?
It's mostly mental. A vocal element is required, but it can be shortened. Verge just isn't good enough to do that, especially not while underwater.

He used it twice in the fight.

He didn't use it in his climb at all? I was assuming there wouldn't be a straight path up, given how the architecture was based on the assumption you could swim, and since it was mentioned that the only reason Verge couldn't have just stopped falling using void step was his sheer speed he would at least be able to adapt it well enough to get across a few gaps.

Ah...huh, could a Void Step technique be modified to trap a bubble of air(he doesn't need to breathe so reusing the air is ok) around his mouth to speak with be made?

Hard part is doublethreaded concentration tho

Hard part is keeping the bubble from popping. The Void step platforms aren't exactly durable and aren't meant to be maintained for long. And it would have to be made before Verge even goes underwater, because, as this last update showed, having lungs filled with water make it kind of hard to talk.

Void Step isn't a spell it can be used under water, heck it was just used underwater. The problem is that water is alot more harder to work with than air.

Considering you have to time the step to hold it in place the exact moment before it leaves your mouth and the fact the step holds it in place so we can't re-use it I doubt it.

You choose to decline the offer. Not that you admit to not trusting the Ultimate. Rather you point out your desire to train using the water pressure.

Hangyomon gives you a weird look after that, then then forces his mouth into a smile and nods. Lastly before leaving, the message is put away in your bag,

With that finished you continue your climb. As before, it gets slightly easier to move with each layer of the city you traverse. By your guess it must have something to do with less water pressing down. To compensate for the reduced stress, you start going faster, working your body more. Kind of boring, but it's still training.

More mon gradually appear on the upper levels, you even manage to spot some rookies. Them not being able to brave the lower levels make sense. At the depths you were at, most champions and even some Ultimates would probably be crushed.

During your journey, you also spot something odd at the city's center. Namely a colossal barrier of moving (and faintly glowing) water that stretches on for several hundred meters. This doesn't stretch all the way down like the whirlpools however, instead just floating in place through what you guess to be magical means. It must be something important. Especially considering that beyond the magical security, the edges of it are constantly patrolled by groups of armored aquatic digimon with long circular snouts and red-striped flippers that look almost like wings. Said digimon are also visibly larger than that Seadramon you *met* earlier. Given that none of the city-mon dare to even go near said patrols, they must hold at least some sort of power.

By this point, you're starting to get glimpses of the surface. Which is a welcome sight given that you've been moving for a good ten hours overall. Though part of said time was because you accidentally ended up getting lost and going back down for a little bit.

But now you're close and that fact spurs you on to move even faster. When the surface is finally breached, you find that the day has rolled on to late afternoon.

Now all you have to do is find your way back to the hotel, which is….

I fell right in front of for six minutes and nine seconds, then walked… no. I don't know what direction I was facing in comparison. Hmm… maybe if I...

You end up thinking the matter over for a good few minutes, trying to factor in the many pathways you'd taken. But handling all of those calculations is too much, even for your mind. There's too many variables to consider and too many unknowns. In the end you have to shrug it off and admit to having no idea where you've ended up.

Which means asking for instruction on how to get there..

Unfortunately, the first champion you go up to (an Ikkakumon) takes one look at you-then jumps into the water and dives down out of sight. The second mon you try and ask runs away and hides inside a building too small for you to enter. You don't know why this keeps happening, after all, you approach them with your biggest smile.

All of this, besides being annoying, also makes you realize something.

... I should have asked Hangyomon for directions.

===

Two hours. You've been wandering around Water Temple-City for two hours... and in that time you've made very little progress. With the sky beginning its progression into evening you're preparing yourself for the possibility of having to spend the night sleeping outside.

And then something odd occurs. The next bloc of buildings you enter are… silent. The *streets* and canals are just eerily empty of mon, as if you've passed through some sort of hidden barrier. Curiosity tugs on your core, urging you to head deeper inside to investigate.

Half a minute of walking later, a sensation tugs at your core. Something a mix between searing wrath and the urge to be cautious. It's not the energy you're sensing itself but… it's how your body is reacting to said power.

Either way, it's undeniably threatening, which leads you to rearing up and settling into your accustomed guard. Anymon onlooking from their homes might find it odd to see you shuffling along with both fore-paws held out at chest-level, but you've dealt with such things before. By ignoring them and focusing on the important matter at hand.

Whatever is setting your core off, it's getting closer.

Sounds begin to make their way to your ears. Heavy footsteps, rapid *cracks* and finally a pained scream that is mercilessly cut short. As you get closer, a new scent makes its way to nose, the smell of fresh oil, worn scales and new metal. With it comes a low and deep rumbling sound, one unmistakably altered through a mechanical filter.

"Hokukukus."

You turn a corner and finally spot the source of your feeling.

A cybernetically enhanced, pale Tyrannomon stands lightly on the aquamarine stone a mere score of meters away from you. Shreds of data flow freely from betwixt its metal claws, the clear remnant of what had just been another digimon.

It's not a MetalTyrannomon like you've ever seen. The mechanical portions are too smooth and uniform, its body too tall and lithe compared to the monster you'd glimpsed before.

However… this thing. You know it. And you want nothing more than to Rip and Tear it to tiny strips of mutilated metal and flesh.

When it turns and locks baleful blue eyes with your own, it clicks.

"Dread Fire!"

A mass of black fire shimmers through the air and washes over Gramps's helpless form. His fur and feathers burn catch alight in an instant, turning a dark black under the seering, dark heat.

You look away, not daring to watch any longer.

And when your gaze returns, the ancient rookie, your caretaker. Is gone.

MetalTyrannomon.

The hate filled Ultimate cuts off his laughter and bounds towards you, its every footfall cracking the pathway. You pull both war-gauntlets back and ready yourself to deflect the incoming charge-but are surprised to see him transition into a screeching slide and pull up just out of your striking distance.

Thirty-five feet of scale, muscle and machinery (a full head and shoulders taller) loom over you, but doesn't make a move. He only glares down, mouth warping into a vicious, infuriatingly smug grin.

"The mutant… Hokukukus. I have to say, I didn't expect to meet you here."

I'm going to delete them all.

"But this is good, I've been relishing this day. Returning the favour is going to be blissful."

You growl softly at the changed Ultimate, fighting against the urge to lunge forward and break him. In fact you do very nearly do that. However for some reason your instincts scream that it's a bad idea.

And you're not supposed to battle within city limits Verge. The mission is to delete him outside of it. Rgh. I. know. But I cannot just let him go!

"Not going to answer?" The cyborg rumbles, using one wicked claw to scratch at the side of his neck. "Not that I've been expecting better of a coward and a weakling. Have you lost your nerve now that the pathetic cripple isn't here to save you"

Take! Him! Don't attack.

"I see it now. You can't do anything but stand and watch. Hokukukus. That *hero* of yours would be ashame-"

Something inside you snaps.

You lunge forward with a Howling roar, thrusting both claws forward and opening your jaw to tear away his throat-

*Clang*

-only for your world to vanish into a series of whirling stars. Three lines of agony blossom over the left side of your face and you find yourself sliding to the pathway's very edge. But that isn't where your pain ends ends.

*Thwip*

A trio of sharp, puncturing pains drill through your side, just barely scraping past the edges of your metallic ribs and stripping the nearby flesh clear away from your body. Three arrows made entirely of ice smash into the pathway beneath you, splitting the stone, which then shatters under your weight.

It's all you can do to catch yourself above the water using Void-Step.

"A miss?" MetalTyrannomon growls, looking up towards the sky. You follow his gaze, spotting a tall figure floating against the darkening sky. "How unbecoming of you *lady* Crescemon."

The mon in question is tall and thin, bearing frankly enormous legs and an armored upper body.

Crescemon… Lunamon?

The newly named *Crescemon* shrugs affably, not seeming to care about being admonished.

What-she's. Trying to delete me?... of… of course she is. She's… Count's servant.

You suddenly feel very tired.

"Hmph. Doesn't matter. I'll delete you and escape before the guards come to investigate." MetalTyrannomon raises the palm of one claw towards you, a faint light appearing from the opening. You ready yourself to block the attack, knowing full well that it'll send you back into the water. Perhaps for good this time. "Nuclear La-"

Before your hated enemy can finish, the cracked stone underneath him crumbles. His shout becomes a scream as he drops into the water and plunges down out of sight. You glance at the damaged path and spot… little patches of ice actively breaking up the damaged sections of rock.

When you look back up, it's to see Crescemon giving the rippling water an undeniably satisfied look. After a moment the wommon turns her attention to you and winks.

"You should be more careful. Big brother."

B-big brother? Lunamon. You-you…

Before you can call out to her, the Ultimate moves. A flash of white light smoothly dives into the water, barely disturbing the surface.

Leaving you alone once more.

Remembered me.

Okay, she knows who we are, which is good. Hopefully she shared that with Thresh, because when we saw his perspective he thought we were dead.

We're firmly shifting into the catch up phase of the seesaw that is our existence, where everyone else has evolved and we're the weakest party member until we can evolve ourselves.

Sorry Verge but Luna is already... We will kill the Count and get revenge. Become an Mega and then everything would change.

I get the feeling that Count is keeping Lunamon loyal via mind controlling Thresh and the other surviving villagers as hostages. Possibly also promising to capture Verge instead of killing him as long as she stays loyal.

Neither can we.

Given how 'rare' Verge must be by now I wouldn't be surprised if the Count had capture orders around

Mind Control methods exist after all

Man, that was just disheartening. Keep moving, meet our friends, and make a plan. Sitting around won't solve anything.

Possibly, it depends on weather or not it would be worth the trouble.

That said I'd imagine if such a thing where on the table it'd be done in the hopes of catching him before he turns into an Ultimate, because that point I'm pretty sure even a Dark Spiral runs the risk of being too week.
We're firmly shifting into the catch up phase of the seesaw that is our existence, where everyone else has evolved and we're the weakest party member until we can evolve ourselves.
Well us and Sparks but he'll probably evolve before us as well.

Thankfully the enemy doesn't appear to have figured out Verge's evolution pattern, while in the short term Verge's habit of being slow to evolve would seem like a boon in the hopes that it just means he's hit his limits... the fact is that in Verge's case it means he has expanded limits which means that the longer he spends in one form the most dangerous the next is going to be, almost the exact opposite of most potential heavy hitters who seems to evolve pretty fast even with their high caps.... and of course this all assumes the murder bear is sticking with above above average or average evolutions like Gryzmon or Weregarurumon that only have an 4X in one area at most as opposed to multiple or even mon with an 5X or higher multiplier that probably comes with things like say the Pig Devas strength score. At the moment I'm honestly just hoping we manage to break 5,000 in strength before we got Ultimate and get at least another X4 in the same area... because at that point we are solidly into low tier Mega as a fresh Ultimate if I remember right.

But yeah knowing they enemy is important, I know I'd want Verge either killed or brought to heal in some way if I realized how he operates.
