Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

"I'm guessing it didn't have those arms in the book," Ling Qi said faintly, her eyes once again gleaming silver as she examined the statue. Even with her techniques however, what she could glean of its power was limited.

"Indeed not," Xuan Shi replied, raising his staff defensively, and taking on a wider stance. "However, this one suspects more than ever that brute force is not the answer."

Combat perception may be only one factor, though. Xuan Shi's the only one who knows anything about the story.

We are not following the story tho.

To be honest, Xuan Shi has far better defensive stats than us.

But I don't think Ling Qi is as suited to figuring out the temple. Xuan Shi has the full context of the story it's based on. Looking at their attitudes so far, LQ is treating it like a series of puzzles while XS is trying to find deeper meaning. I like his approach better. So...

Time to go full Hidden Moon and uncover these secrets! Puzzle Boss Fight!

So, both choices work. Xuan Shi is likely better than Ling Qi at finding weaknesses AND at Tanking, but Ling Qi is good enough that she can make do for either choices too. Our offence is good enough to do damage and our peception with the +30 and Studious means we can easily reach A rank for C.Perception too. As for defence, a combination of Zhengui + Ling Qi will work really well.

I would say the advantage of defence would be to have a fight with Zhengui, stretching his muscles a bit, as well as let the formation expert dismantling the golem in the most efficient way. For Xuan Shi it will probably be the 'best' way to recover the golem for his own use, if that is possible.

The advantage of offence is that Ling Qi is currently capped for perceptiveness and stealth, and going on a boss battle is one way she knows can get her the insight she needs to get that B rank perceptiveness.

I just realized that, going by his stats, it seems we can take Xuan Shi in a fight pretty easily with CtE. Spiritual avoid is a major weakness of his, so he should have arts to mitigate it though. Otherwise his opponents would have no issue landing debuffs on him.

We really, really can't go assume he doesn't have "debuffs don't work on him" arts, or that he doesn't have B+ rank armour techs that negate Call to Ending's armour ignore.

I agree that both options can probably work just fine. So might as well go with the one I like better

He absolutely has ablative defense magic, because that's the counterplay to "I bypass your armor" style defenses.

We've been prioritizing defense in a lot of our battles lately. I think I'll favor attack this time around.

Xuan Shi knows the story behind the temple best, is a formation specialist, and pretty clever to boot. I also like the juxtaposition of him being a turtle with absurd defense and we the musical wraith just tanking shots from a statue while he nerds out. Also less likely for us to accidentally wreck the place and making him sad.

This is the whole point of the setup we have with Ling Qi and Zhengui... Also I want to force Zhengui to work with Xuan Shi. Should have delicious character interaction.

Huh.

I had missed that offence meant that it forces Zhengui to work with Xuan Shi.

Plus Xuan Shi just mentioned he wanted to try out his stuff in battle. Defense is guaranteed to get him that.

Just 5 stats? I thought we have better C. Perception than that. Also i am really disappointed in LQ stats in comparison to Xuan Shi, we need more battle oriented training.
Ohh, almost forgot. I think it better to let LQ be the attacker. To discover in combat weakness of a strong enemy seems like a perfect chance for us to level-up Perceptiveness in Divination or something similar.

Hopefully we can stop being capped on some things after this fight.

Our stats are decent enough. Xuan Shi's stats are focused primarily on armor and health while our stats are more balanced. Not to mention we have three spirits while Xuan Shi probably has none. Our defensive stats will improve significantly if we can train up Dexterity to the next level and our Spiritual Penetration will improve this turn since we're training Presence.

There are a couple of factors at play here.

The "old family" duals typically have a Stat uncapped from Red from eugenics. They then build entire builds around that stat, developing arts to allow it to be used for ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING they can forge a conceptual path from it to.

Additionally, he's a Formations expert. It really does make sense that he would spend most of his combat training focusing on defense. After all, the bag of tricks he brings does most of his fighting, what he needs is alpha strike survivability and most importantly: time to think.
