Voting is open
I'm the only one who's voting for schemer

Also there are very few votes for the DC 70 option. Shame, it would be so epic if we passed it (and worst comes to worst, if we fail we simply ally with the socialists anyway...)
Uh... are you sure about that?

Because we'd be kind of screwed if we instead fail the check and piss the socialists off enough to form a popular front party with the Communists. I think they might actually have a majority together.

Personally, I'd rather fail it - I want to drag the SocDems to the left, but even if I didn't, I'm also strongly in favor of normalizing coalition governments which involve actual compromise. "Biggest party gets to unilaterally set the agenda" is not a good precedent to have.
well, it's not really setting it unilaterally. We're just playing the game better than both other parties :p

Fact is, if we win we get extra prestige. If we lose, we compromise on healthcare, which is what we would have done anyway.

Also avoiding the compromise it's probably better even if we WANT to actually improve healthcare. After all nothing stops us from improving it anyway, but without the compromise we can do it on a timetable of OUR choosing, without being forced to even if we have more urgent things to do. ( i imagine the compromise will lock one or more actions on that agenda, and locked action are always worse than freedom of choice in my opinion)

Uh... are you sure about that?

well, i asked poptart before.

I wouldn't be against this one as well. If we get that 70+ we get all the advantages of a strong majority with none of the compromises.

@PoptartProdigy what exactly happen if we fail though? Hit to our reputation? You simply decide which of the other two factions joins us? Do we still have to cave in on one of their requests (healthcare or unions)? Do we still get to decide which one? Or do we simply rule with a minority government?

You'll get to pick who you keep (probably socialists even aside from how this thread votes; you're still running a minority with the NC. Small one, and the Socialists are friendly enough to you that you probably could get the swing voters, but no reason to trouble your start more than possible).

In that case, you could make the PC the Speaker of the House, as the Prime Minister in Switerland is Switerland's head of government even though executive power is vested in a Federal Council.
I'd like somebody with power, as opposed to somebody endlessly going, "Well, I'd like to do this, but alas, the Council holds all power."

Final word: no.
@PoptartProdigy i asked before, you said we'd probably get the socialists if we fail the DC. Do we still get to choose on what we compromise?
They'd be making demands at that point.

@PoptartProdigy Had a fun little idea last night. Recently watched The Postman, you know the semi-bad Kevin Costner movie, and I was thinking it might be interesting project to recreate the United States Postal Service but with sort of a Division bent towards them. You know, sending people out to deliver the good news that America is back and what not through pamphlets and newsletters, help bring communities together by moving mail (sort of like in the Postman), and sort of keeping an eye on things. I was kind of thinking this might help our refugees out a bit, because I imagine many left their homes to join with the United States in Chicago. It could go a long way to make people feel like the government hasn't forgotten that others might have had to leave people behind to make their journey to the Windy City.

Hell I'll even base a character in Congress off this idea to give it a little more merit. But the general idea is go for a low risk and low tech solution for decent/high rewards. I mean we don't have to give these guys cars or anything, horses can probably do. Which also made me wonder if we have horse breeders around, but that is another minor concern.
...ooh, that's really interesting. Yes, that will be an option!

What do the concessions on unions entail?
Basically, the socialists get their wish list on unions, granting unions broad and potent privileges over private employers.

let's do the unions
we can do the healthcare later
You cannot, necessarily.

I have so many things relating to healthcare for a reason.

I wouldn't tell you this, but nobody has yet noticed the plot hook, and I feel bad.

Not to say that you're doomed if you don't double down on health care, but it will be a pressing issue in the near future.

Do you guys remember how there were a bunch of plagues?

Free notice: I hadn't realized I'd been subtle with this, but health care will, in fact, be a pressing issue in your near future. This came up on the Discord, I realized that the topic hadn't really been talked about that much, so: health care is something that modern states in the USA have to worry about in terms of, "how do we not get plagues," again.

Why do i have the feeling that water supply and sanitation will be another pressing item? Roaming plagues, industrial wastes, and heavy lean on waterways.

well, it's not really setting it unilaterally. We're just playing the game better than both other parties :p

I assume from your smiley that you realize this isn't a real counterpoint, insofar as in practice the SocDems (aside: not sure why you're referring to them as "we" throughout) would in fact be setting the agenda unilaterally on a successful roll even if other factions would nominally have input. That said, I would appreciate it if you'd seriously engage with the point I was actually making (i.e. "norms of actual meaningful compromise are good")?

I mean the pollution from before the shattering of government. Heavy metal and such doesn't decay that quickly right?
Lake Michigan water's safe to drink right now IRL, and it should be even cleaner in this setting, unless there was a preposterous amount of deliberate poisoning, which I can't rule out given the source material, but probably would have been mentioned before now.

If Chicago's pipes decay like Flint's, that's another story, but that's pipes, not the lake.

On that note, Romans had lead pipes but got lucky; Hard water deposits built up inside the pipes preventing lead poisoning.

Unions are important, but per Poptart we don't need to compromise on both (and I get the impression the wider party won't agree much), and of the two I prioritize healthcare work. Especially if Vaccines don't get picked for CP Plans.

Idea for the next phase: Take Efficient Bureaucracy (-3CP) and Disunited Currency (3 CP).

We'd give ourselves a problem, but use it to buy a tool ideal for fixing it, which is also useful for other things. (And downright necessary if we're going to grow)

because it's the party that won, so it's the one we're playing. You have a point that not everyone voted Socdem though, so maybe the "we" is not exactly right.

Compromises are good, and i'm not against investing into healthcare (as i said before, i'm italian, we have (mostly) free healthcare here!), it's just that i think a compromise here would translate to locked actions, and i prefer to keep my choices open in case we have other emergencies.

Okay but the thing is, we're not playing the entire SocDem party, we're playing a singular leader figure - hence Poptart's insistence on a government structure which has one of those. This individual's actions will be constrained by whatever governing party or coalition controls the legislature, so by my understanding, the various compromise options simply alter the nature of the constraints in play rather than increasing their quantity or magnitude.

Furthermore, I am of the opinion that even if it constrains player choice somewhat, it is better to normalize compromise rather than an effective winner-take-all situation. Poptart will not hand us an unwinnable situation simply because we opted for a coalition government, and I am perfectly happy to make the game non-terminally harder in exchange for better outcomes (i.e. a system of government that functions well) - especially as said well-functioning may end up making things net easier for us in the long run.
