Makes me wonder what really set those two apart at the end there and if Beat blames himself partially for it all? As that flash back at the end has me feeling Beat feels really conflicted about all this.
Since it feels like the two had a relationship like Verge and Flame did. But Beat was the older bro mon and things went horribly well between the two.
Wait I think I get the gist of Beats backstory now. If I'm right, Beat's hangups are way worse than we thought and we need to add another patient to our evergrowing mental hospital.
Rrrrrrrgh! I have no idea what to go with, since it's so vague!
I don't think Beat's going to successfully kill him either way now, since more info about this character dynamic is still being given to us. Plus, Blitzmon seems to have just come up with something. So... I don't even know what the vote will do.
I'll go with my gut I guess?
[X] Resolution.
And yeah, the situation is a lot more messed up than we first thought. Beat was a mentor to KoKabuterimon, taught him that in this world you have to rely on your own strength to make it, and... this in some way or another led to KK killing and loading their friend and then devolving Beat.
While there are still many pieces of this puzzle missing, it puts a much darker spin on Beat's motivation: he's not just trying to take revenge, he's also trying to take responsibility for the monster he created. That's... whuf, that's heavy.
Edit:
Also, this puts a new spin on Blizzard being Beat's motif. While the lyrics fit with Beat feeling dead inside and only knowing how to feel anymore through fighting and mind-crushing effort in the hopes of finding some meaning in strength, it's also kind of referring to Blitzmon. Namely, Blitzmon is Broly: a being born with a body and abilities representing a heroic legend for his land, and also an insane monster, with his very existence as said legend being a damning indictment of the world he hails from.
Hungry. Food scarce. Big things take. Not notice me. Gone now... very hungry.
*Pain*
"Owie! What hit my..." New big thing. Saw me. Don't fear. Fight.
"Oh hey there little guy. Um, sorry about that I didn't see you there."
Not fight? Angry. Indignant. Curious.
"Hn."
"Okay... oh I know! Do you want some meat! It's not cooked but..."
Hungry. Take. Glare. Mine.
"Wow you are a umm... Fearsome, one?"
Compliment... good. Like. Am fearsome.
"Hey so... I have some more food at home. Do you wants to come along with me? I know we could be friends! Best of friends! I haven't had a friend before but we could like, help each other!"
Friend?... familiar. Like. Dislike. Uncertain... hand lowered. Jump.
"Hn."
"Not much of a talker are you? That's alright! I love to talk! I can do that enough for us both!"
Annoying. Useful. Eat more. Become Strongest.
===
"Wow that was a tough fight! But I guess it didn't stand a chance against both of us huh Wormmon?"
"Beat... that is my name. Not Wormmon."
"A name? That's pretty cool Wormmo-Beat!"
"Hn."
The freshly evolved rookie could feel his mind clearly now. His thought forming properly and they carried a clear mission. He would eliminate his weakness. Grow faster, stronger. Become more powerful than all the others. Questioning where those goals came from did not matter. What Beat knew was that they were his and that was what mattered.
Floramon, his *friend*, was helping. Useful. She gave him food, shelter and even helped defend their territory. The pink bird had learnt that much. Now it's weakness would become his strength.
"Just... I wish it didn't attack us. If it had just listened then maybe we could have all been friends. We don't have much food but I wouldn't mind going hungry tonight if..."
Foolish. Weak. Food makes us strong, we should not give it away. Hn.
...
But, another friend? That might not be so bad-not because I need any or want any!
===
"Hey Beat! Look what I found!" New thing. Pink and small... weak. Not strong enough to load... Happy in her hands.
"What purpose does this serve?"
"Purpose? This is our new friend! I found little Mochimon here in my foraging; he must have hatched from his egg a few days ago! Just like when I found you! We can raise him to be um..."
"Tsk, our friend?"
"Yes! Exactly! See you're already getting into the spirit of things! I'm sure in no time at all we'll all be the closest of mon!"
Annoying.
"Koko, Fwiend! Fwiend!"
Contact, hugging me. Nice-unneeded. Glare... recoil darn you! Stop it!
...
It's not awful. Maybe... having this *Mochimon* around won't be so bad?
===
"Beat! You have to be more careful around him!"
"He's fine."
"You almost squished him!" "He's fine."
"Mm, am fime."
"Fine or not, be more careful! I don't want him getting hurt, you hear me?"
"Tsk. Understood."
Spoiling him.
"Good! Now... my itty bitty, little friend Mochimon is so cute yes he is! Yes he is!"
Why is she obsessed with friends?
===
In danger. Too strong for him!
"Worm Wheel!"
*Thwack*
It ends. Become my strength.
"Wow! You're so strong and fast Beat!"
"And you're still weak. He almost deleted you."
"Well yeah but... You're my friend right? Floramon said the you'd both always help me!"
"Do not depend solely on others. Personal strength is what matters Kokabuterimon."
"Really? Then... I'm going to be stronger than you!"
"Hn."
"Kokoko! I'm serious! One day you won't stand a chance!"
"No."
"Aaah, you're so good at talking Beat. We can totally hold conversations with just one word syllables." "Yes."
"Ergh..."
=
A scream, pain. Sadness, confusion.
Floramon! Where is she, where is she where is-there!
Her body rolls out in front of their burrow, the plant-type rookie's body crumpled and cut.
Who did this?!
"Floramon. What happened?"
"B-beat?... s-stop don't-"
"Ko. Ko. Ko. I was the one who put her in this sorry state. But don't worry! Her suffering is going to be over nice aaaaand quickly!"
Kokabuterimon?! Why would...
"... what?"
"D-don't listen he's... no-not well. Just r-run please."
"Don't be so confused Beat! Friends help each other don't they? Now Floramon's just helping me get stronger!"
No. This will not continue. I will not let my... my friend, do this. I have to snap him out of... this.
=
A final blow. To end this. The armor is cracked. One more hit and Kokabuterimon, his friend would be...
"S-stop!"
He falters. The lunge misses.
KoKabuterimon does not.
"Scoop Smash!"
Pain. Can't move. It hurts.
"I'm so glad that you're my friend Beat! If I took your strength I'd be so much better! But... I think you can help me more later! Kokoko. Apoligies for keeping you waiting Floramon."
Stop.
"Please... no."
His friend steps away, and raises one arm over the plant digimon's prone form.
"I'm... sorry. Both of... you."
"No!"
The arm comes down.
"Hrgh... Beat... KoKabuterimon"
"I swear Floramon I-I'll delete him!"
Tears.
"Please... please don't he's our-" The light in her eye dims.
Wrath. Betrayal, loneliness.
"Kokoko, this power is fantastic! She helped me grow so much! Thanks for all the advice Beat! I never would have thought of this if not for you! Help me grow stronger when we meet again! Maybe I'll even digivolve!"
Gone. Gone. Gone.
Hurts... hurts so much. Can't. I can't.. so weak... can't stay...
No.
===
"Sir Scratch said the little ones should be somewhere around here!" White thing. Gentle. Friendly. Safe.
Revenge.
In that brief moment Beat can see his chance to carry out his promise. To end his friend once and for all. But in that nanosecond where the memories strike hardest. he hesitates. The Stingmon's spike plunges into Blitzmon's mechanical insides... but the timing is off. A fraction of the needed force is bled off.
The appendage fails to fully punch through.
"Punishment Shock!"
Pain. His body thrashes in the grasp of a living lightning bolt. Chitin blackens and cracks, digital flesh boils within it's armor. The Stingmon's left arm goes numb, dropping motionlessly to his side.
The darkness... it's back... I-I can't...
No.
"Comrades in arms, bound by oath of vengeance."
"Comrades in arms, sworn to fight till the task is done."
"Comrades in arms, our solemn pledge to persevere even should we die."
Strength.
My arm is finished... There is still one left.
"Megaton-"
"No! You-you can't possibly still-!"
"-Punch!"
*Thock*
Blitzmon flies back, his cloak electricity winking out. Data leaks freely from his head, only stemmed by the Legendary warriors desperately clutching hands.
I will not fall.
"How... Beat my friend why, how are you still-"
"You."
One step.
Blitzmon flinches away. "Are not."
Two.
He falls back, body trembling.. "My friend!"
His arm rises a final time.
"Ah-ah, aah. Aaaaah!" The mechanical digimon howls in terror, whirling about and desperately clawing at the ground to get away. Beat brings him arm down... but the Legendary Warrior is already gone, blitzing away in a flash of energy and a scream.
...He got away my... no, not my friend. Not him.
...Run. I will find you. We will delete you.
===Authors Note: I'm sorry for not writing this bit yesterday. I ended up being very anxious about the writing part and kind of kept putting it off.
So... wow. Koko was more fucked in the head than I thought. And while I'm sorry that he got away... I think Beat has made an important development here.
Huh, babies really take to heart what they get taught don't they? Sad though it was in such a warped manner. As there are always to few like Floramon in this world.
Still as sad as it is to see more of Beat's past, it is nice to see him grow and mature more. Since it feels like Beat hit a real milestone today, now if that ends up being a good thing or not, we'll only time will tell.
And now we see more of that same grey text that's been showing up in Verge's head, and while it could be something else I'm inclined to believe that it's him on account of Verge knowing that oath way back when.
I wonder just how our three boys are connected, given Verge's mutations in this life a part of me wants to say it's likely that his past life could have been the oldest while at the time being the lowest leveled so to speak... wait a minute.
Hey guys I know this is a stretch but remember that flashback that had Verge's 'parent' for a better word mention siblings of both a Virus type and Vaccine type, and Sparks is a Virus type despite being a normally data type digimon... now I know it's been explained in universe as him having been the pilot of that mech for so long, but what if he always was a virus type? Again I know this is a stretch but if turns out Beat is actually a Vaccine (We never found out his type) despite his template I think the location of our past selves 'siblings' might be closer than we'd first though.
Beat saying "we" seems to have been referring to teamwork with the others, but I actually think it's past-life fuckery, a bit like Ardat's "we". Considering how much he was stuck in his head the whole update it'd be weird for him to suddenly think about others.
7nth Of Water: Wrath Bear Vs Wolves... Wrath Bear Wins. & A New Challenger Approaches
Muscles surge, expanding with rage-induced power as you tear across the earth. Pain is overwhelmed in a tide of boiling crimson, the near-crippling injuries rendered as wholly unimportant as your three workable limbs work furiously.
Your claws are light, your teeth are sharp. And both are ready to Rip and Tear.
The Garurumon freeze as your ear-shattering bellow ripples through the air, the one-armed Wizardmon held between their jaws temporarily left forgotten as a mountain of fur, muscle and death barrels closer. You leap across the final dozen meters, soaring gracelessly across the air with a snarling cry of hatred. There are no thoughts of mercy, no concept of heroism. All that matters is ending these two champions.
One arm descends, claws bearing every single ounce of your considerable momentum descend on the desperately whirling champion. It's not fast enough.
Metal strikes flesh, force is transferred and the wolf-like digimon detonates in a shower of body parts under your swipe. It's fellow drops the Wizardmon's legs and leaps backwards, back towards the passageway. Your jaws catch it's neck half a second into the movement. Cracked fangs effortlessly tear through digital flesh, then bone, before slamming shut. The Garurumon's other half slams down, already beginning to fade.
Running on pure instinct, you pull on the two defeated mon's forms. Gaps in flesh fill in, new fur sprouts to life, cauterized wounds begin to heal and the data of your barely connected right arm begins to regenerate. But it's not enough to fully heal what damage Wolfmon incurred. Your forelimb still lacks the strength to properly move.
You roar again, ready to pounce on the next opponent that enters your line of sight... only to be interrupted as a slightly pained voice calls out.
"Heh. 'twas quite the save. If not for Scratch's spell, then mine body would have been torn in twain."
Sparks!
And like that the nearly berserk anger powering your body evaporates, leaving only weariness in its place. Your body breathes a sigh in relief, muscles shrinking back down as the power of Wrath vanishes.
"You're... okay."
"Indeed I am." The slightly mauled champion replies, pushing himself up with his arm. "Hehe, twill take more than a couple mangy mutts to end mine existence."
That's uh, good? Okay! Sparks is okay!... now I feel kind of silly for getting so mad. I mean, I just-those Garurumon-Focus.
You sweep a discerning eye over the battlefield, examining things now that you're not half-consumed by anger.
Up in the sky, two forms, one red, one white flit across at speeds too high for you to fully track. But what can only be Phelesmon and HolyAngemon's battle is progressing steadily. Which of the two is currently winning is a complete mystery, but with that dishonorable Angewomon floating on the sidelines, you're inclined to believe that the Throne is more likely to carry the day.
Most unfortunately, the fight on the ground has not gone well. That titan of bone ran headlong right into another wave of reinforcing host soldiers and those that weren't crushed or batted aside were met by a WereGarurumon and the other ten members of his pack. Which were now wreaking havoc upon your allies. Two of those pack members had gone after Sparks, snapping him up in the middle of his attempt to unleash a spell upon Pit's opponent.
Pit is decidedly not a statue for a some odd reason, despite being hit full on by Phelesmon's technique. It was hard to tell from such a distance, but it seemed like only a fraction of the Pidmon's body was affected by the blast. You're not sure why, but are glad of that fact nonetheless. If he'd fallen to the ground as stone from that height something might have broken.
Which had left Phelesmon confused and thus open to your commanding officers attack.
You lost track of Beat as he was fighting Blitzmon, but now you're fortunately able to spot the insect digimon. It's not exactly a warming sight. The Stingmon's smoking body stands rigorously straight in front of a patch of charred earth, his chitin cracked and blackened. However he's not gone. The champion's body isn't fading away, which means he must still be alive. But his wounds not being healed suggest that Blitzmon got away somehow, either fleeing, or defeating him before leaving. Judging by the scream you heard earlier, the former is more likely than the latter.
"Sparks-"
"Yeah, yeah. I'll go make sure no mon deals a finish blow on the prick. Might even get some vengeance on those bloody Garurumon. 'tis simple enough. Go help Lo-Pit."
Lo? What does-Focus!
"Understood. " you pivot around to the short angel, ready to rush in and help him against the Growlmon-
-only to find the gigantic white-haired champion thundering across the half-constructed fortress's grounds directly towards you.
"Friend Verge! Watch out!"
Even through the injuries, watching this red and black dinosaur charge forwards, kicking up small boulders of rock in its wake is a thrilling experience. Its heavily muscled frame is tall, reaching a foot over even your prodigious height, even though it's body is undoubtedly slimmer. With heightened focus, you examine the new foe's armaments, tri-pronged claws coming to hardened points, long outcroppings of hardened material to serve as blades on either arm and a mouth full of thick, triangular teeth.
The other dinosaur species had the ability to breathe fire. I must be on guard against such things.
It closes the last score of meters with a booming air-shaking roar of challenge, the blades on its arms glowing with sudden heat. In response to the feral(?) champion's aggression, you shift stances. Turning sideways to minimize the profile of your body whilst simultaneously presenting your strong side to the opponent. As a bonus, this ends up moving your wounded forelimb out of danger.
"Pit! Go attend Beat. I will engage this opponent in battle!"
My claws are heavy.
Growlmon lunges across the final few feet.
