I was board and had a bit of spare time on my hands, so I went looking through the DigiNet and found two more possible Champion forms for our adorable drill-mole. First up...
Monochromon
Now going from Drill-Mole to Dino-Rhino might be a bit of a stretch and you'd normally wouldn't be wrong, however theres four main things as to why I picked him.
Verge's Wrath would make transitioning into a more rough and aggressive form such as Monochomon.
While Verge is a Beast type and Mono a Ankylosaur Type they're both apart of the Nature Spirit Field.
Monochromon are digimon who excels at offense and defense. Looking at Verge's stats they seem to be like this as well.
Finally Monochromon's personality is incredibly similar to Verge's. Here's a quote from wikimon on Monochromon's bio. "...it has a relatively docile personality, but once it is angered, it will continue to unleash terrifying counterattacks..."
Now doesn't that sound similar to what happened with Gnaw? Anyways there are a few problems.
Like a said earlier he's a Ankylosaur Type while we're a Beast Type. Now a type change isn't rarest thing ever so this can easily be solved.
Digging is most likely going be traded out for a Rhino Charge.
That's about all I have on the first one, but before we move on to number two here's a fun fact.
Fun Fact: Did you know Monochromon has a X sub-species? If not here it is!
Yes! His horn did turn into a Giant Sword!
Now moving contestant two.
Togemogumon
While Toge is a Armor digimon he's also classified as Champion. Now just like with Mono there is also four reasons on why I chose Togemogumon.
Just like with Verge and Monochromon Toge is a Nature Spirit. Leaving a possible link between him and Verge.
Toge is a digimon who possess a balance between his defensive and offensive capabilities, however unlike Monochromon Toge is sluggish.
Wouldn't be the first time a Drimogemon digivolved into a Armour digimon.
Now the last reason is something I put together based on observation. With Verge's kindness and his willingness to support Flamemon I suspect he hold Friendship in high regards. With is the very trait Togemogumon represents.
Moving onto his problems are the following.
He is also a different type than Verge. Toge is a Mammal type, however I believe the change from Beast to Mammal is far easier than Beast to Ankylosaur.
Toge's main affinity is Ice. Sadly unlike with Mono Verge doesn't have any real connection to that affinity.
Now for fun facts about Togemogumon Fun Fact: Did you know that the digimon this Armor digivolution came from isn't Armadillomon, but Wormon
-Bonus Fact: The only digimon Toge can naturally digivolve into are Chimairamon and Skull Satamon. That's right this Icy Pocupine of Friendship will either end up as a more Monstrous Frankenstein or a Skeletal Devil!
So tell me guys what do you think about these two?
[] Grey: Somehow it feels....safe, protective even.
[] Pepper Breathe!"
[] Jump Towards Auger
===
"Pepper Breath!" A low voice snarls out from the trees behind you. It's an attack that's something you can feel in your very core. Fear rises up in your chest. The attack has to be aimed at you! Deep down you know that freezing from fear will only lead to you getting hit.
Auger stands nearby, his body a potential bulwark to protect you from danger. You hop right, leaping towards the armoured rookie and almost managing to entirely avoid the fireball. Almost.
Pain burns across your left side as fire washes over your moving form. Your fur is singed and flesh is burnt, prompting a yelp of pain to erupt from your throat.
Ow, ow, ow.
Landing heavily on your side, you stumble about, wincing from the pain. However, on a second inspection, you realize that there isn't actually that much damage to your body. Quickly, you scramble behind Auger with all haste, placing him between you and whatever had just shot that attack.
W-what's that?
A small yellow digimon leaps out from behind a set of trees, and charges towards the pair of you. Seeing it's large tooth-filled maw and large sharp claws sends chills down your spine.
"Ah-a-Auger!" You scream, rearing up and pointing a paw towards the sprinting Digimon.
"Mmmm, what?" The Armadillomon lazily questions, his head tilting to look towards the hostile creature. "Oh...an Agumon. Huh." The large rookie nonchalantly turns around to face the *Agumon* and lets out a tired sigh, "I wonder why-"
He's cut off as a white claw lashes out, stabbing between his eyes. Your eyes widen in horror as the attack hits home.
*Clack*
That emotion quickly changes to surprise as it simply rebounds off of Augers armour, leaving little more than a simple scratch. Not to be discouraged, the Agumon growls in anger and continues sending strike after strike at your companion.
For his part, Auger merely shifts his body, forcing the wild furious strikes to hit his armour instead of anywhere actually vulnerable.
"Hmm....Verge" he says, ignoring the claws stroll slashing at his armour.
"Y-yeah Auger?" You reply with a nervous swallow.
"Mmmm, stay behind me. I need your claws."
"O-okay" you reply, slinking down towards the ground.
"Scratch Beat" The Armadillomon rumbles, striking forth with his own natural weapons. Much to your surprise, the Agumon manages to switch from attacking to dodging near instantly. It ducks and sidesteps the flurry of blows before leaping back out of Augers attack range.
W-wow it's f-fast.
It takes a deep breathe, readying another fire attack even as the Armadillomon curls into a ball.
"Pepper Breathe!"
"Rolling Stone!" Auger roars, his body breaking into a sudden, extremely speedy roll towards the feral rookie. He rips through the ball of fire, and *Slams* into the surprised Agumon.
"-urk"
The small digimon rockets back, sent soaring through the air from your companions strike.
Ah-Augers amazing! He-that. Woah.
You rise back up and watch the hostile rookie crash into a tree before falling limply to the ground.
"Is-is he okay."
"Mmm. I dunno." Auger murmurs, turning his back from the fallen foe. "Mm, let's go." You slowly nod, scurrying to follow along behind the waddling digimon. Nervously you rear up and look back, hoping to see the digimon still laying motionless. However that's not the case. Rather the feral Agumon proves to be limping away deeper into the forest.
"Mmm. Gramps said there shouldn't be any out here...." Auger mumbles. "Weird.
You can't help but let out a small shudder. That digimon.....you have a feeling that he's going to show up again.
===
Not long after the encounter, you arrive at the base of a small mountain, in fact it's the same one you'd visited with the entire group;though this spot proves to be quite far away from the shaft which had collapsed just a couple days ago.
Auger leads the way inside, happily trotting his way past the dark entrance. You look at the unknown opening, take a nervous breath and then scamper inside after him.
The Armadillomon leads you to another small patch of green crystal and stops in front of it gazing hungrily at the small portion of treasure visible. Only a minor amount proves to be sticking out past the surface of the rock, though you wouldn't be surprised if more lay below the surface.
By the looks of things, someone had already attempted to breaksome of the rock off from the crystals. Though judging from the numerous marks and chinks off the green material they didn't do a particularly good job.
You tilt your head to look towards the slobbering Auger, and it all fits into place.
"Found this ah'mmm. Yesterday" Auger explains. "Tried to get it out but....mm, napped. Had to head back." The large rookie lets out a yawn before curling up near the entrance. "Fighting was tough. Wake me when it's out."
W-wait what?, he's going to sleep! Tha-that's-No Verge just dig.
With that you walk over to the rocky are and ready yourself to start. Then your left side brushes up against a fortune stalagmite and you can't help but since from the pain.
First you start slowly, clearing away the surface stone around the crystal, uncovering piece after piece of green material that oddly enough seems to grow underneath the rock.
How Auger sleeps through the sound of your nose and claws ripping through stone is a mystery to you, but he doesn't move even once during the hour you spend fully uncovering the patch of green treasure. The grouping itself is perhaps two thirds the size of the crystal patch your group had taken a few days ago, but it should still be more than enough to fill your new bag to the brim.
You start pushing your nose towards the base of the growth, going around gradually, hoping to break it off in one fell swoop. Then suddenly your nose hits something HARD. The drill making contact with it lets out a mighty, ear wrenching screech causing you to leap back in fight.
Auger also wakes up at the sound, though he ignores it entirely in favour of rushing over towards the crystal outcropping. The large rookie uses his claws to pick away at the already weakened base and with a mighty crack, he rips it free from the wall.
He doesn't let up after it falls, simply continuing to try and break it apart.
You ignore his energetic efforts for now, and rise up to peer towards the area which had stopped your drill. There's something in there, different from the rock and small patches of green. While you examine it, Auger busies himself taking the pieces of treasure and splitting them into piles, one of which is significantly larger than the other.

WOW! I totally misread the Augur option as something else. However looking back on what Verge's personality is and how tanky Augur is I should have seen this coming.
Wonder whats the deal with that Agumon? From my understanding they don't usually attack out of the blue like that. Oh well First rival/enemy.

We kind of owe Augur for using him as a shield. Plus Shiny!
[X] More Sparring.
Rather have fighting at a comfortable level before stat raising.
Edit: Added a shopping vote.

So much as I very much enjoy the speculation, and theories you proposed I'm sad to say Verge doesn't really have the ability to evolve into either of them. One would require really high ??? stats that Verge has no real way to get or reason to want it even if he did. (Togemogumon.)
As for Monochromon, well the line connection just isn't there for him. It would be like him evolving into a Growlmon or Birdramon. There'd have to be some sort of seriously strange things going on for that to happen. Like someone experimenting on his data.

Buying a good bed and blanket for maximum recovery effects and because it seems like a good combo to get first.
Plus, we will look cute as fuck napping in the thing.
I figured Toge was a stretch, but I'm still willing to make a case for Monochromon. In fact it sounds fun so I will! Hang on got to get a certain bird gif.

Both Drimogemon and Monochromon not only share a connection, but Two! Both are not only Nature Spirits, but Data types as well!
The reason why Drimogemon digivolving into a Monochromon is considered a mutation is do to them both being of the Champion Level! Though now we're in a setting where there is a Rookie Drimogemon solving the issus.
Even if that doesn't matter, the fact remains that Drimogemon was able to become a Monochromon. Proving that there is some connection between the two spieces!
Now on to the matter of difference in types.
This situation is not something that hasn't shown up before, specifically I speak of 02. When Cody's Armadillomon a Mammal Type digimon digivolved into Ankylomon a Ankylosaur Type Digimon! This is not taking into account on the various evolutions a common Drimogemon can take, such as Red Mega Kabuterimon, Giromon, and even Metal Greymon (Virus)!
I present my case.
(I don't care if this simply gets slapped down by the Word of QM this was fun to make, so it was worth it.)
And it is certainly a good one. A damned good one in fact. I didn't even know about the whole mutant evolution that happened with a Drimogemon developing into a Monochromon like that.
You brought up their similarities with both being data and nature types, along with the 02 example with Anklyomon.
Plus it was funny. Good gif.
Well done. I will award thee another free stat point for all the work done.
Evolving into that would require Verges *main* stats to be strength, fortitude (highest stat) and (the hardest part) agility for the speed aspect of the digimon.
