"I understand." And I do. I really do. Superheroes are a roller coaster for Vought-American. They make them a great deal of money, but at the same time the slightest thing goes wrong and it can get very messy. Godolkin was the worst, but some of the things the others get up to… They're going to be nervous about any change. "My alternate proposal was to assign me to Superduper." Her eyes widen slightly. "Superduper are a cash… Well, not a cow. A calf? They don't cause any trouble that can't be dealt with by normal insurance, they turn enough of a profit year on year that it's worth keeping them going... But they themselves are going nowhere. What they can achieve is.. basically nothing, due to lack of skills, lack of useful powers-" I don't know who thought 'Ladyfold' was someone it made sense to put on a super team, but they need a slap around the head. "-and their low IQs." I lean forwards slightly, resting my chin on the back of my right hand. "Those are problems I am uniquely well equipped to deal with. It wouldn't cost a significant amount of money and it would let me test out the viability of my ideas concerning training."
My Mom works as an occupational therapist, so personally I'm REALLY looking forward to see some heartwarming action from IndigoPaul!

He spent his time at the sex party playing the Babylon 5 CCG. Who else could he be?
From what I've read about it, that kind of sex party would be more likely to induce nausea than lust in quite a few people, much less someone powered by compassion. Especially given how badly those prostitutes were treated - he was guarding them from being hurt worse; hanging around abused women is not exactly a situation inclined to make him horny.

Considering who was hosting and what actually happened there he could have the sex drive of Casanova and still wouldn't have participated. Grayven (he of the tentacle sex orgy) wouldn't have participated.
Yes... so him not getting turned on there isn't evidence for or against the Eldritch Un-Paul Abomination theory inspired by his earlier ability to recognise a woman noticing him.

On the other hand, what kind of bizarre creature from beyond rational space-time would play B5CCG? It's definitely a Paul.

Vorlon: <weird noises> "You stacked the deck again, didn't you."

Shadow: <eldritch screech> "It is our role to do so."

Vorlon: <weird noises> "No it is not 'your role' to cheat. The Rules are important."

Shadow: <eldritch chittering> "Rules that you wrote!"

Vorlon: <weird noises> "Of course we wrote the rules. Who better?"

Shadow: <eldritch snarl>"Of course. That's how you cheat, you write the rules to benefit yourself!"

Vorlon: <weird noises> "That does not count as cheating."

I always thought the notion of Indigo rings being full on not-yourself brainwashing by default was a little inconsistent with them building up Abin Sur to be this great hero. It would make sense they work on a more subtle level when not on irredeemable psychopaths. Maybe when you put it on a normal person it amplifies your empathy for everyone around you to an Indigo Tribe standard level, but if it's on a DC Comics Verified Kill People and Laugh About It Bad Guy, it's got to generate so much artificial personality to get them to feel "empathy" they aren't much themselves anymore.

I rather like the idea of a max-empathy hero in a crapsack world, though. Some of these variants are really quite interesting, but isn't Zoat just condemning himself to write WTR forever? Now you've got, what, six conceivable storylines people will demand get filled out, and given we still haven't resolved the Dr. Fate arc, or even reached the YJ timeskip, we aren't going to hit season 2 before netflix starts season 3.

That said, there's so much to explore in WTR and it's variants, what's the WoZ on fan stories of WTR? I've seen little omakes here and there in the threads, do people post longer stuff on their own, or does Zoat prefer we don't write larger WTR fan fiction? Are there any (Young Justice SI SI) threads on SB or SV?

This is the "Crisis of Finite Zoats" storyline, when the Zoats post their story on their chosen forum it goes to the alternates forums, never the originally chosen one.

And after my encounter with Brand I'm in a particularly good position to enjoy it. While I came out somewhat less scathed than I thought I might, they've still dressed me up like a seventeenth century Native American of some sort. Or at least Brand's idea of what a seventeenth century Native American looks like, which is probably nothing like the real thing. Animal skin -probably fake- waistcoat dyed to a pretty near match for the indigo glow of my constructs, shorts made of the same material and mock moccasins.

Na na na na Na na na na Cultural Appropriation Man!

Doesn't bother me. Post them here, post them in your own threads, whatever. I vaguely remember someone saying they were going to start one but I don't think it went anywhere.

The butt of my lantern's staff taps gently on the carpeted floor as I make my way towards James Stillwell's office. I'm getting a few looks, but I imagine if you work in Superhuman Development you get a bit used to odd-looking types walking around. Ah, no, that woman's checking me out. I turn my head and give her a warm, friendly smile, prompting her to immediately turn her head away. I rather suspect that she's blushing under her makeup. It's funny; I seem to remember something about indigo rings having some sort of brainwashing effect, but though I have experienced a slight change in my approach to things I certainly haven't experienced any sort of radical disconnect.
Oh my goodness. Guys! I've figured it out! It wasn't the testosterone that made OL oblivious. Orange Light made him Selfish in a primal sense of the word, so he doesn't notice other people's interest in him. Indigo Lantern gets super-empathy and thus notices easily that women are interested in him.

So basically, we have one of the most grimdark superhero settings... and you stuck the guy powered by compassion into it.

... I'm not even surprised, this is exactly in keeping with your strategy of "Rings that absolutely do not fit the setting."

You had Avarice in YJ,
Fear in Alt!YJ,
Hope in Crime Syndicate,
Anti-Green in New 52 (although one could make the argument that that one fits, given what they're doing with Volthoom's ring),
Rage in Teen Titans,
And now Compassion in The Boys.
So that just leaves... love, actual green, white, and black.

Disgonnabegood.

well the Prosylite IS a giant Hug Octopus
Oh, I'm just now getting why the Proselyte is an octopus and the Ophidian is a snek: An octopus can give lots of hugs, and sneks can hug themselves really well.
Taking the bolded as evidence, I just assumed they couldn't do much, and that, much like with most of the other heavy hitters, they were nerfed by the writers for balance/story reasons. At the very least, I suspect that if they could do all the sorts of things they do in WTR, it would have been mentioned somewhere, or there would be some reference to them under-performing.
I don't remember any of the Greenies really doing much in canon, even when they actually were there. Plus, it's been said in story that while the Earth Greenies are decent at construct strength, none are particularly fancy with their rings. In most incarnations I've seen, lantern Stewart usually just uses shields and energy beams.

Ground Hawk and Five-O? I don't think so. As far as I remember the first we see of them is when Hugie infiltrates the G-Men.

It was kinda annoying to google every character, and having no clue to the setting. Maybe in future, the lesser known works can get a short introduction, to facilitate the flow of the story. without the constant googling to figure out what everyone is talking about.

It had a link to the wikipedia page. After that I went to the tropes-characters page.

That gave me pretty much everything I needed to know. both for this story and to ensure I never accidentally read The Boys.

Edit: Given that homelander's reaction to "I (apparantly) did some horrible things that I don't remember" was "Oh well, better go do some more." rather than "clear my name" or "get medical help" then I'm going to say Yes. He was fucking crazy.

That's just from reading the tropes-page spoilers though.

LIES! LIES AND DECEIT!

Irredeemable is probably the single most mean-spirited thing I've ever been exposed to.

Here's the plot: Not-Superman decides to start murdering and raping his away across the land... because his super-senses told him that less than 100% of the human populace loves him as much as he thinks they should. Also, he's Superboy-Prime levels of OP, and the comic's finale implies that we're supposed to feel bad that those meany-weeny humans made him go S9 on the universe by not worshiping him like an Old Testament god.

Pretty much every other super in the setting is about as much of an amoral fuckwad (like their expy of the Doctor, who at one point decides to interrogate a recently-raped druidic villainess by slowly injecting her with Cyberman nanomachines that would render her immortal at the cost of severing her spiritual connection to nature, with him claiming that the former means he's not technically doing anything wrong, but still using her horror at the idea to scare her into surrendering information), and the only one who's not a complete asshole gets cuckolded and crippled.

The handful of interesting deconstructions it comes up with are buried in enough grimderp and senseless slaughter to rival Worm itself, and reading the series for them is like diving naked into a dumpster full of Ebola-tainted bandages and dirty needles to fish out the single Snickers bar hidden at the bottom.

Fuck Irredeemable.

No. That's not Superman. That's an abused child who was raised up thinking he had to be perfect. It's not a deconstruction of Superman's ideals. It's praising Superman himself. It's saying that no one else besides Superman could deal with what he has to go through. It's showing how loopy the Plutonian was, because he tried to live up to an ideal that was impossible to live up to.

Don't see what's wrong with him being overpowered. Don't remember the finale.

No, they aren't. The supergenius seemed fine, the electrokinetic was cool, and so on. They're largely people like John Constantine, no other choice, so they picked the least bad choice. Some are assholes, sure, but most aren't. The entire point of the series is that someone who wasn't Superman couldn't live up to Superman.

You think this is the most mean-spirited thing you've ever read. Ha. The Boys is worse than this. At least there are good people in Irredeemable. Uber is worse, at least in tone (no matter how much I love it). Hellblazer is worse than this. They literally had an entire issue whining about how America's domination of Britain would turn them into an aircraft carrier for the bloody Yanks, and they also had a story arc where their royalty and higher ups had a secret demonic society for raping kids, cannibalism, and all that. I'm almost positive there are more.

Irredeemable is an interesting story, and should not be taken as a deconstruction of the DC Universe itself, but an exposure of the superheroic ideal to imperfect people.

You know, given this recent view of alternate Pauls I find myself wondering what's going to happen when Renegrayven inevitably meets Earth 16 Sinestro.

Because we all know he'd be interested in someone else having a yellow ring without his say-so.
