I was kinda sorta, and you are right, in this fic it does seem to come from the bacteria (speaking of - symbiotic bacteria; why can't other species be adapted / injected with those?). Lord-of-X ascension ritual seems to work on different principles, though in some respects provides the same results. It might even be possible to combine the two, really.

You know, I'm still wondering when Paul is going to run into Lobo during his space adventure...though considering the way Paul tends to work, I'm kind of surprised that when he went after Vril that he didn't just hire the Main Man to bust him out of the place as it would have been simpler there.
Lobo is not the kind of person you hire for precision work like rescuing someone alive, I'm willing to guess, along with other issues.

And since Zoat made the Lord ritual tie a soul to another plane, and also established the plane of greed as a thing, making a lord of greed would certainly seem to be a theoretical possibility.
Lobo is someone you send when collateral damage is not only acceptable, but an objective in and off itself.
Even ignoring having to track down Lobo and hiring him, I sincerely doubt that Dox would have been charmed by someone who sends.....well, Lobo on a rescue op.
