So uh, Darkseid mentions Grayven throwing himself into the Bleed? Was that ever mentioned before? What does throwing oneself into the Bleed do anyway?

Yeah, pretty much saw this sort of thing coming as soon as he started messing with a Father box, and doubly so when he dared to use the name Grayven. That was possibly one of the most bone-headed moves Zoat's SI has done in any of the universes we've been shown, especially since he should _know_ about Darkseid from the start, and about clearly seems to have known about mantling at least on some level. Sure, short term, becoming a new-god looks really shiny, but long term, becoming an Apocolyptian one means you are completely screwed due to encounters like this.

I was curious why he'd even tried it, given that he should have known this would happen, and I haven't really seen a worthwhile justification, so I'm hoping we'll either get one in an upcoming chapter, or some revelation of evidence about how mentally screwed up he'd been when he made the decisions that led to this point, now that we've finally reached it.
It was stated very clearly and simply: the Blockbuster Formula turned him into a Big Gray Rock Monster Man, and the Forever People, upon seeing Big Gray Rock Monster Man Who Feels Apokalyptian (due to the Orange Light) jumped to the conclusion that Big Gray Rock Monster Man had to be Grayven.

R!Paul rolled with it because he found the mistaken identity amusing - and because it gave him a lever against the Forever People. They would be a lot more easily manipulated by the Third Son Of Darkseid than they would be of Random Lantern Who Happens To Be Big Gray Rock Monster Man. After they left, he kept using the name 1. because he still found it amusing, 2. it did give him advantages (again, claiming to be the son of an absolute planetary ruler > random Lantern), and 3. since he couldn't use his own name, it was as good a name as any.

At the point it smacked him in the face what a terrible idea it was, he'd piled on the lie high and deep enough that there wasn't any way out: he'd lose face and respect and (most importanly) power - given the sudden threats he found himself facing the spectre of, he needed the power the mantling of Grayven gave him, and he saw losing it as tantamount to suicide. There was no other way out but through.

So while he didn't want Darkseids on his couch, that is how you get Darkseids on your couch.

This chapter was excellent, you really did a good job conveying the abject terror Renegade was feeling.

I also really empathized with the elder grandfather visiting his son who'd moved out and had a kid of his own.

So, that was the most delightfully frightening chapter i've read in a loooong time.

The whiplash from Grayven being shocked and dejected to full panic mode was incredibly well-done, and the build to Darkseid sharing life's little secret with junior gave me chills.

Man, when I bond with my dad we just go shooting.

Poor Grayven.

Perhaps Grayven has no couches in the Mountain
We discussed this in an earlier thread. You used to be able to glitch your way out of this encounter by destroying every couch in your home base, since the game spawned him directly onto the couch object in your base with the highest comfort rating.

It seems they've finally patched that exploit out.

I suspect if you remove all the furniture that it's possible to sit on from your base, he just brings his own throne or something.

Nitpick: Venom Buster, not Blockbuster.

Someone want to explain to me why EVER SINGLE LINE HAS SELF=DARKSEID WRITTEN IN INVISIBLE TEXT?

In the comics, Darkseid hacked the anti-life equation. It originally is supposed to say self=nothing, or something of that sort, I'm too lazy to look it up right now.

Darkseid changed that to self=darkseid so that the anti-life equations turns people into nice little worker ants eager to do whatever Darkseid wants them to do.

So Darkseid is basically projecting some of the anti-life equation here.

This is mostly supposition on my part but:

Darkseid has made it his mission to gather the anti-life equation. He has many fragments. I believe he whispered one of them to Grayven at the end of the chapter. But he's also completely integrated parts of it as well. In Grayven's time on Earth 50, he encountered Self=Null. Darkseid is constantly emitting Self=Darkseid. His fragment makes everything around him into more of him, provided enough exposure. Apokolips is literally an extension of Darkseid. Darkseid is.

Darkseid has taken the part of the equation that says "You are nothing" and sort of... plugged his own self-value into it. "You are nothing, but Darkseid is not. So you should be something. Be Darkseid."

This goes doubly so if you consider the metaphysical bizarreness of the New Gods in New 52, where they're recursive layers of being in each universe mantling themselves. That is to say, there is Darkseid, but there is also Earth-1 Darkseid who is also Darkseid, and sub-reality Darkseids who are also Darkseid, and so on.
Doesn't that make Darkseid a puppet of his Mantle rather than being it's master?

Awkward...

So I just looked up the anti-life equation as written in Wikipedia. And life=pain is not there. Was this Darkseid trying to Justify Renegrayven, empower him with a portion of the Anti-life Eq as a reward (something he hasn't done to any of his sons or servants I think), or as a punishment...
...
...
Or all of the above...
...
Darkseid Is.

Darkseid is walking mindrape whose to-do list includes getting rid of free will.
Soul crushing Godspeech, or just his natural aura. He's all about making everything into an extension of his will.

Just being around Darkseid exposes you to a portion of the Anti Life.
Long story short? Darkseid's gone so long without a shower, his BO turns people into p-zombies.

If the fatherbox is directly subservient to Darkseid then why didn't it let Renegade be completely subsumed when he was at the Source Wall? Renegade would've been lost completely to the Anti-life and Darkseid at that point.
