It's been danced around in the thread, but I wanted to put it in words for clarity.

One o the problems with merit, or comeptiveness really, is that over time people stop trying to be the best and start trying to game the system. For example, baseball players taking steroids, politicial gerrymandering, the American education system of standardized testing.

People want to win, to get the job, and so train themselves to be seen as the best and not actually be the best.

That doesn't mean it's a bad idea, after all. As Churchill said "Many forms of Government have been tried, and will be tried in this world of sin and woe. No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed, it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except all those other forms that have been tried from time to time."

So while meritocracy can be corrupted and fail, that hardly means it's impossible. We have to stay on top of things and prepare for long term issues, or rather, leave space for those issues to be addressed in a flexible manner.

Now I recognize that we're not a democracy, and won't be any time soon, but the spirit of the quote applies but as well to merit, no?

you can't go wrong if all your actions are for the catgirls goddesses.
Especially when they are real.

Ah. So someone just began to imagine there being something if we over-commit without input from the GM.
What @jjffjhjf said.

That being said, while we may not have any strict confirmation that going over-progress will do anything, we do have cause to believe it is possible. We already know that it's possible to go above and beyond on Legitimacy and Oshha has confirmed that it is possible for us to go overlimit on infrastructure as well, so it stands to reason that we can also pump in more progress than strictly neccesary on mega-projects.

Now, will what happens be anything good? We don't know.
Will it be worth an action and -3 Temp Econ? Almost certainly not.

But we don't know what will happen and the only way we will ever find out is if we. And we're currently in about as safe a position as we'll ever be (stupid nomads), making it a decent time to experiment.

Thats because its easier to game or alter the test than to beat the test.
Natural selection in action, if winning a given challenge grants advantage then the ways to advance are:
-Be better than the competition. Barring a major genetic advantage, this is high investment, low probability and low stakes with no increase in payout, if you fail you've committed a lot of time and effort for no gain.
-By eliminating the competition. This is low investment, high probability and high stakes. Eliminating other competitors isn't too hard, or even easy to catch(you don't even need to kill them, just slip a well timed laxative), but if you're discovered you're fucked.
-By gaining unfair advantage. By acquiring better equipment, better food and better training than competitors could you can outperform them. But this is very high investment, and the effectiveness scales with how much better you can get in each domain relative to competitors. Past a certain point you're systematically monopolizing advantages.
-By altering the competition. This is slow, but by making the contests more esoteric and difficult to train for, you can ensure that only your candidate has a good chance. For instance, changing a test of endurance in running laps until collapse into a 100 km long obstacle course, which your contestant had trained on, but other villagers had never seen the course before today. Even if they were fitter, they would expend more effort per station.

[] [SEC/MAIN] Settle Land = (Target)

Well if that's true I'm glad we trying to bring them in via marriage.

Maybe we should send settlers that way to maintain influence on their culture?
