Could you bring the refugee units too? All in! The Fanshen militia can defend home.

I don't like the idea of bringing absolutely green troops to a battlefield just to be either useless or slaughtered. I'd like them to get some training on the estate and keep watch over the area of our territory outside Fanshen village without the delay of calling up the militia.

Spent the day out and about having a normal Saturday, and had a bit of a think about this. Ultimately ended up thinking the same thing I'd said several times previously, which GAZman has also pointed out. That being, we're going to get loot, and even if we don't we have two months to get enough cash for Spring 3 through other means. And even if we don't manage that, going a single month without using all 3 building actions isn't a catastrophe.

So really there's no reason to choose between the Infantry and Sharpshooters, we can just do both. So that's what I've done.

It still leaves enough for Spring 1 and 2 actions, although we may have to pass on the Horse Pastures if there's no loot in Spring 1.

As such, I heartily endorse "[] Plan Consolidated Bandit Killing Machine" to you all! :p

Anyway, this is what the plan looks like now.
Liang 1st Levy - 80 - Adept - Spears, Swords, Shields and Armour
Liang 2nd Levy - 100 - Trained - Spears and Shields
Liang 3rd Levy - 100 - Trained - Spears and Shields
Liang 4th Levy - 100 - Trained - Spears and Shields
1st Infantry Unit - 84 - Trained - Spears and Shields
2nd Infantry Unit - 100 - Green - Axes and Shields
3rd Infantry Unit - 96 - Green - Axes and Shields
+ 200 Yu Family Levy - Trained - Spears and Shields

1st Mounted Scouting Unit - 10 - Trained - Bows, Swords and Steeds

Shangdang Sharpshooters - 100 - Regular - Bows, Swords and Armour
1st Archer Unit - 50 - Adept - Bows and Bludgeons
2nd Archer Unit - 50 - Adept - Bows and Bludgeons
3rd Archer Unit - 50 - Adept - Bows and Bludgeons
1st Crossbow Unit - 150 - Trained - Crossbows, Spears (95) and Bludgeons (55)

1st Liang Clan Mounted Veterans - 55 - Veteran - Swords(T2), Spears, Armour and Steeds
2nd Liang Clan Mounted Veterans - 60 - Veteran - Swords(T2), Spears, Armour and Steeds
Liang Mounted Companions - 60 - Adept - Swords, Spears, Armour and Steeds
1st Mounted Volunteers - 63 - Adept - Swords, Spears, Armour and Steeds
2nd Mounted Volunteers - 62 - Adept - Swords, Spears, Armour and Steeds

Ce Family Irregulars - 30 Adept - Halberds and Armour
Lady Ce Xiang's Bodyguards - 20 - Skilled - Swords, Spears, Shields, Armour and Steeds
The Boars Chargers - 75 - Regular - Axes, Armour and Shields
Lu Family Guard - 15 - Skilled - Swords, Halberds, Armour and Steeds
There's going to be lots of archers everyone expects, so having either a shield or good armor is key to avoiding them just roflstomping, given how the weapons list explicitly said that archers vs unarmored/unshielded targets just wrecks them.
Personally, I don't actually expect a lot of archers on the enemy side, I haven't seen anyone say they do. Bows and Crossbows are extremely hard to get a hold of - we still don't have anyone we can buy more from - and the only reason we have such a large ranged force is because we got the Prefects bows and crossbows. Even if the bandits gathered every hunter in the county (which obviously won't be the case) I doubt they'll have even half our numbers.

I have some concerns about this plan. First off, just at a glance so I'm not 100% sure, but I think your purchase numbers are off and you're at least a hundred shields short of what you need.

Next, although there's no rule against it, it would be better not to make mixed units of volunteers and levy troops the way you do here just to make it easier for us to manage them in the future and to track casualty numbers.

The 2nd Volunteer Heavy Infantry unit of yours is only 40 men strong, and you've left the Gong Family Volunteers at 50 men. Both too small for an infantry unit tbh. As they are the can't really be deployed independently as a consolidated unit could. And while we don't know how the number of men in a unit will affect morale, it's a concern.

I can understand why you're not bringing The First Refugee Infantry, with only the spears your plan gives them they'd be exposed and fairly useless. But given the numbers we have and the numbers we're facing it seems unwise to not bring them as a reserve unit. While they obviously won't be on the front lines, the larger our force is the more intimidating it will be to the bandits. Additionally, if the front line starts to struggle then throwing more numbers forward to reinforce it will be a necessity. If we're not bringing the Green units there was no point not calling up the Militia. Also with you bringing Gong Su the highest LEA character left behind who could train them is Tong Ba (50 LEA) who we use for INT/GOV actions and people want to use to find more partisans before the ban is lifted.

You're right about the shields. I have edited the right number in, now. I don't know where I lost track of things, but I had like three tabs open to this quest and a word document going to write up my plan and it definitely happened in there somewhere.

I didn't combine the 2nd Volunteer Heavy Infantry (the former Second Volunteer Infantry) with the Gong Family Volunteers because they are at different levels of training and I didn't want to lose an Adept unit by mixing it with a Trained one. Both units already exist as is, so I didn't think their size was that much of a consideration. Combining the 1st and 2nd Heavy Infantry could work but would necessitate the purchase of another 40 swords.

I guess taking the Refugee Infantry makes sense from that perspective, so that's been edited in as well.

Does that look better and make sense now?

Yes I'm aware, I wasn't advocating merging them (sorry if that's how it sounded) I was just pointing out that you had failed to consolidate them with any other units and so had left them as rather insubstantial units.

Obviously, I think my plan is better (shocking I know!) but a couple of recommendations for you own would be:
  1. Take 17 men from the 2nd Volunteer Heavy Unit and add them to the 1st to make a full 100. Then split the remaining 23 between the Mounted Volunteer Units.
  2. Take the 34 volunteer men you placed in the 2nd Levy unit and instead combine them with the Gong Family Volunteers to make the 2nd Volunteer Heany Infantry unit. (84 men)
You lose 23 men from the infantry to the cavalry but you get 2 much more solid Infantry units than you currently have. You could also - as you said - just combine the 1st+2nd Heavy Infantry units but that would mean 40 more spears.
Both units already exist as is, so I didn't think their size was that much of a consideration.
They're only the size they are because this is the first chance we've had to do a proper reorganisation not because they actually make sense as they are.

Thanks for the recommendations. Took them under advisement and made some edits to my plan.

I think your plan has two very big detriments to it. First, it doesn't give any armor to our front line infantry. Second, it takes all of our adept infantry fighters and puts them in the back with bows. I think that combined, this will result in giant piles of Azure corpses in the front of our army.

The QM already said that the increased difficulty of training with bows is accounted for in their high purchase cost. There's no need to give them to our highest training guys just to have the "bows require intense training" angle covered.

Actually neither of those are true.

I remove some of the Adept soldiers from the front line, but not all of them. My Plan also does give armour to the Liang 1st Levy Unit as you can see in the force composition breakdown in my last post. The main differences in our Infantry; you have 123 Adept Troops whereas I have a similar number of Trained Troops, you have 196 Green Troops who only have spears whereas in my plan they also have shields (and axes instead of shields).

Frankly, I doubt the difference between Trained and Adept is more substantial than the fact you have nearly 200 Green troops with no defence at all.
The QM already said that the increased difficulty of training with bows is accounted for in their high purchase cost. There's no need to give them to our highest training guys just to have the "bows require intense training" angle covered.
While the difficulty of training is covered by the expense of a weapon, it's also explicitly the case that with higher levels of training the rate of fire for archers increases. There's also a difference between men who can fire a bow and a capable unit who can fire a coordinated volley which is where archers come into their own. A unit of archers firing at will is a much lesser threat than men who can fire as one. Given that archers are one of our few advantages here against a force that outnumbers us it's wasteful not to make use of them, especially when it only takes 100 men to do so.

Our other advantage is, of course, our cavalry. One unit which your plan leaves without armour, and given they're going to constantly be in the midst of the fighting that seems.. unwise.

80 out of 660 is 12%. The vast majority your projected front line fighters lack armor both and adept training. "All" may have been overstating things, but not to the extent that you seem to be suggesting. My plan for the green refugees includes spears (a much easier weapon for untrained soldiers to use en mass than axes) and shields. They are also only present as reserves.

The unit you are talking about I specifically labeled as "light" cavalry because they aren't there to be constantly in the midst of fighting. They are there to do what light cavalry does: harassing, flanking, raiding, running down retreats, and other high speed high mobility maneuvers. We already have four times their number in heavy armored cav. Your plan lacks any such unit and at the expense of protecting any of the soldiers who will by nature of infantry be definitely stuck in melee.

@HastyGaming Why are we leaving 20 skilled armored cavalry at home while we take 196 green troops with us?

Now about the green units. They would be horrible as a reserve force. If you look throughout time from the Romans ,who used their green units as first line and had their veterans as the last ,to Napoleon´s legendary Old Guard, a reserve force is nearly always made up of some of the best you have. A reserve has normally two purposes either it is used for a final push against a weakened point in the enemy line or used to stop the enemy from breaking your own. We know that the green units will have the lowest moral of our own forces and the lowest fighting capabilities.
Do not expect much from them, they are likely to panic and break on the battlefield and likely barely know how to hold their weapons, never mind use them.
If the description mentions they will likely panic on the battlefield and barely know how to hold their weapons , then such units are simply not made for the battlefield. I don´t know what you all imagine the green troops to be but this is our guideline for them and it does not look good. People who are likely to panic on the battlefield will not be good at storming enemy lines or reinforcing our own. Troops which barely know how to hold their weapons will not be capable of blocking a breakthrough from the enemy.
Last but not least we can assume we will outnumbered, therefore any intimidation factor we have is completely diminished. You do not fear an enemy who is outnumbered by yourself.

Panic and fear can easily spread through our ranks and taking these green troops with us involves a high risk. If they will do what their information proclaims they are likely to do, panic, it can easily lead to a mass retreat. Only regular and above units can easily withstand the moral pressure from being outnumbered. This battle is not a sure thing and the risk these green troops bring with them is not counterbalanced by their pathetic fighting capabilities. Their numbers will not help us not being outnumbered, so I cannot see a good reason to take them with us.

As a reminder because I saw some people stating otherwise Xu Tong has three action per estate turn at the moment. He could easily train the green troops up.

Green troops are literally people with absolutely no training who have been dragged from their farms and had weapons shoved in their hands. Sure, I imagine some of them may be stronger and fitter than others but I can't micro down to each individual soldier. Spears and crossbows may be weapons that are easy to learn, but for Green soldiers, it would be their first time holding said arms if they are taken into battle.

Later on when we inevitably strike out on our own can we build a thing that raises all new levies at the Trained level?

@Gaz

What are Lu Bu's stats? Or is it traits that makes him so strong?

Can you give an example of what would happen if Shu went Berserk? Would he go all Dynasty Warrior and kill chaff units without rolls or something?

The stats here are based off of ROT3K game stats, but aren't completely identical. In some of those games his WAR stat is over 100. Guan Yu is also over 100, but lower.

He has 100 WAR before counting his gear. He also has some pretty busted Traits that make it so it is very difficult for him to lose duels through RNG alone.

Something like that - but Berserk status also means he'd be harder for you guys to control via choices, until he calms down at least. Note that characters with high WAR are already capable of easily taking out multiple soldiers in a battle, especially lower quality troops. In smaller battles such as the one you are about to fight, "Hero Units" in the right place can really swing the balance of power.

I am going to be reorganising the big, messy profile informational into multiple posts. First off, we have Estate Stats, which will be kept separately and updated often - so you can easily check how your estate is doing, and what Improvements are available.

You may have noticed I added the newly-available Improvements that you are able to purchase as of Spring 184.

My plan for the green refugees includes spears (a much easier weapon for untrained soldiers to use en mass than axes) and shields. They are also only present as reserves.
Mm, yes I see you've edited Shields in for them as well. Necessary for them to have but unfortunately your plan now costs 4843 Wealth leaving us with only 324 for Spring 1...

It's one thing to increase the spending a bit so we're depending on loot and raising money for future months actions but you've gone so far that we can't even afford actions this month.

As to Spears being easier to use than axes... Well as we've just said, in this quest the difficulty in using a weapon is covered in the expense of buying it.
That's a nice idea, but our cavalry are (as everyone has noted) one of the advantages we have over the bandits. They may not be the front 'infantry line' but they absolutely will be in the midst of the fighting, especially in this first battle. As to having superior mobility, I doubt having or not having armour will make a huge difference, or that it will be a greater impediment than the shields.
@HastyGaming Why are we leaving 20 skilled armored cavalry at home while we take 196 green troops with us?
It seemed appropriate since we're leaving Ce Xiang to leave her personal guard with her. If the worst should happen they seem like they could be depended on to get Ce Xiang and our sisters to safety.

As with everything though I'm open to changing it if someone provides a compelling reason and people agree.
As a reminder because I saw some people stating otherwise Xu Tong has three action per estate turn at the moment. He could easily train the green troops up.
Thank you for the reminder, I had forgotten that.
What are Lu Bu's stats? Or is it traits that makes him so strong?
Stats below (unless Gaz has changed them since then).
LEA - 72
WAR - 100
INT - 45
GOV - 39
CHA - 55

His current stats, not counting his gear.

Thats a good plan, but would it not be better to use this post...
Aaaand reserved just in case.
... on the front page? Feels like it makes more sense for Character, Estate etc. info to be there?

Hello fun new estate improvements we opened:
Recruit Volunteer Watchmen (100 Wealth) (100 Guanxi)
Now your village is expanding, it may be an idea to hire trusted guards to patrol the streets and keep an eye out for trouble.
Increases passive resistance to enemy espionage attempts, lowers chance of crime and disorder.

Foreman is cheaper then mansion for another upgrade. Volunteer watchmen I think we need to grab this spring along with the shrine and clinic.

So many tasty estate upgrades. I'm thinking the horse pasture and all the more action improvements. The first due to horses being the war factor and them also being valuable for farming.

I wonder how would an BERSERKER Shu would be like?

Considering the KINGDOM manga, wasn't there an general would was about instinct and can go berserk on will and make his soldiers who charge behind him also go berserk?

not the most smartest of moves but an berserk shu on horseback with his squad of Calvary charging down being also berserk....yikes.

So we are at 3 estate upgrade actions a turn currently:
Recruit Volunteer Watchmen (100 Wealth) (100 Guanxi)
Now your village is expanding, it may be an idea to hire trusted guards to patrol the streets and keep an eye out for trouble.
Increases passive resistance to enemy espionage attempts, lowers chance of crime and disorder.
Construct a Simple Shrine (100 Wealth)
Setting aside space for a simple place for your villagers to worship will keep them -and the Heavens- happy.

Hire a Foreman (200 Wealth) (400 Guanxi)
To ease the burdens of expanding your township, you should recruit someone to help oversee construction projects.
Allows for an additional Upgrade Action every turn.
Build a Basic Clinic (100 Wealth)
Xia You is currently running out of a temporary medical station, but a more permanent clinic will greatly assist her.
[] Convince Ce An (CHA) (UNIQUE) (1000 Guanxi) (Liang and Ce Retainers Only)
Your aunt has done much to help you...but perhaps you can try and convince her to relocate her martial arts school to your estate...

Spent:
500 Wealth and 1500 Guanxi

Wealth- 5167 - equipment purchases we did
Guanxi - 2195

Note- Shrine increase chance of positive random event, if we are going to have random events I want them weighted to be positive. Plus more commoner happiness gets people further behind us.

Let's see...

This is an absolute must pick. Especially as we get going into the quest proper.

Hire a Foreman (200 Wealth) (400 Guanxi)
To ease the burdens of expanding your township, you should recruit someone to help oversee construction projects.
Allows for an additional Upgrade Action every turn.

Another top tier pick that will pay for itself in the long run.

Divert Stream (200 Wealth)
You can redirect one of the streams that feed the Fen river to flow directly through your estate.
Increases max Productivity by 100, unlocks additional actions.

In this day and age, having multiple water sources is key for long term survival, especially if things get dicey.

Build a Basic Clinic (100 Wealth)
Xia You is currently running out of a temporary medical station, but a more permanent clinic will greatly assist her.

I want a place where we can really treat the injured, while also signalling to Xia You that we wish for her to be a permanent fixture in our household.

That's what I'd pick, at least.
