This suggests the parasite wasn't a natural occurrence but an engineered agent. If it can't overcome the full strength Piper directly but can take it from hurt to eventually dead.

If it was a strategic target they would have hit harder, they're doing it more like building a resource collection hub.

In that case, that's another good argument in favor of the sneak-attack option rather than merely defending.

Partly because I'd like to be here to facilitate communication between Suyin and the Piper, and mostly because I think taking the slower, safer route just makes sense when we chose to give ourselves extra time. We just set up the battlefield to our advantage, so let's use it fully. I'm also a bit concerned about putting the Piper in a more dangerous situation when one of the downsides of waking it was increased damage to the local ecosystem.
In the end, our goal isn't to track down and kill whatever being is orchestrating this. It wouldn't hurt, and we might end up doing it, but it's tangential to our reason for being here: drive the corruption out, and keep it out.
