My biggest hope right now is that this guy was a librarian and his ring is full of books that were thought lost in the fires. Not immediately valuable to us, but a massive win for everyone.but I will say I wouldn't be surprised if the ring's loot was lessened by some in-universe explanation for balance reasons.
"Do you think we can kill it?" Ling Qi said slowly. "And why hasn't it noticed us?"
"Such things can be unpredictable… but their obsessions consume them, and can make them easy to trick if one plays to their delusions," Xia Lin said, warily eyeing the creature. "...It may once have been a higher realm, but the older a corpse, the more its power has rotted. No corpse Immortal lasts more than a century or so. I believe we can eliminate it, particularly with a hard first strike."
Ling Qi was less sure, power still burned its maggot ridden flesh and lower dantian, even if most of its meridians were in ruins. She could probably slip in and remove the stone, depowering the formation without having to fight it. It might notice her, but if what Xia Lin said was true, she could probably trick it and steal the source. They could then return easily with everyone to eliminate it.
On the other hand… Ling Qi's eyes lingered on the resplendent robe and inkbrush that glowed with powerful qi in her senses. There too was a silver ring, whose contents were opaque to her eyes. How often did one get the chance at such treasures, divided between only two cultivators?
"What are your thoughts on the spoils of battle," Ling Qi said, stealing a glance at Xia Lin.
"They are a soldiers due," Xia Lin replied evenly. "the reward for high achievement."
Ling Qi smiled. They really weren't that different, under the exterior, were they? She supposed it came down to how confident she felt.
This is one of those times where the thread starts shouting "Floor it?" at each other in increasingly excited tones, and I frantically grip my seat and try not to imagine the ways in which this goes horribly wrong.
[X] Steal the power source and make your exit. Then return with the full party, and eliminate the corpse immortal with overwhelming force.
This is definitely useless, but I might as well. I have a deep adoration for characters who do the boring but responsible thing no matter how much they want to push their luck. The explicitness of Qi feeling more pessimistic of their chances to deal with this guy cleanly before getting sidetracked by the Sick Loot makes my decision for me.
Eh, not quite - Ling Qi's insight is remarkably vague in terms of what it wants (act/move/change/grow are all mentioned as acceptable/desired) but you are on to something in pointing out possible differences in opinion/perspective that might cause issues later.I'm pretty sure this is bad and not good, because Ling Qi's "forward" is "change" and Shenhua's forward is "progress towards perfection (which is an End to change)," doubly so when the interlude with Xia Ren and CRX suggests some degree of hostility toward the past in that "progress." It seems pretty reasonable to assume that Xia Lin is using Shenhua's definition, and having motion in different directions set in their Domains is bad for the relationship! The only real upside to this is that so long as Xia Lin doesn't get too specific in her Insights, the "gleaming dawn" can still refer to CRX... But unless that shift happens, this current track seemingly ends in a head-on collision.
Some of this seems pretty fair though I think there are a couple different interpretations of both insights that make them more compatible and it's also important to remember that part of the purpose of the Green realm is that your domain and by extent your way are still malleable and could be influenced by the people around you. It could be that Ling Qi and Xia Lin working together brings both of them to an interpretation of their respective insights that is more compatible.[X] Eliminate the corpse-immortal now, together you and Xia Lin should be more than its match.
