Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
You can't escape Qi's friendly meddling, Su Ling. It was only a matter of time :D.

Also, Ling Qi's rise in ranking was quite impressive with 25 ranks, but did you see Xuan Shi? 30!

[X] A fully fortified 'Panic Room' fortified to the limit of Xuan Shi's skill (7 Green Stones, owed favor to Xuan Shi.)

I feel like it would be in character for Ling Qi to do her utmost to protect her family. We can't cultivate support Arts and say we're all about protecting those we care about and then not protect our most vulnerable loved ones. We can afford it.

Five extra GSS would be worthwhile just to have the privilege to owe Xuan Shi a favor as well. He's our third Ducal friend, a possible husbando, knowledgeable Xuan Wu advisor, study partner if we ever get off our ass about Formations, and as much an expert in security as we are consumed with the desire to have a safe home for our family. Owing him favors can only deepen our relationship and if there's one thing Ling Qi likes it's useful friends.

Edit: From the recent RR chapter:
Music was home, safety, love, all the things she had given up for that wretched double-edged freedom. It was the cornerstone of her best memories. Yet for all that attachment, she hadn't been able to afford it.

Not in the city where the sound of a flute would draw the scavengers of the street. Not on the mountain where she needed to scrabble so desperately for strength that it consumed everything else.
Well? Can we afford it? A safe home for our family? If not now, when we have the money and there's a war going on at our doorstep, when? I agree that we shouldn't spend our stones frivolously but this is the one thing we should sacrifice cultivation for, and it's not like we won't find other sources of income between Bao Qian and our adventures.

The only word in this I disagree with is "possible"

I think we should actually take the more conservative route here. We shouldnt get used to spending willy nilly when we already have a very good Security formation. It would take the sect falling to have an attack that would require a super duper powerful panic room. Elders are involved protecting our town, Suyin already designed us a good panic room, we don't need to spend a billion dollars on a backup plan.

We should save that money so that when we leave the sect, we can have a fief with proper security. The more money we have when the sect is over, the better our security will be then. And when we have a fief, we wont have Indigo elders protecting the town so security becomes much more important later.

I think the peace of mind Ling Qi would have, as well as being sure that even if things go wrong our family is safe, is worth 5GSS. We also have one year and a half before we leave, so it's not like this is a super-short measure, either.

It's expensive, but it's good security that is worth it when there is a war going on.

*sniff his first worshipers, the grow up so fast.

Hehe, Su Ling's domain will be The Relucant Hero.
She'll be our scowling High Justiciar! Yessss

On the other hand, once again the Ma sisters are left in the dust.
The Ma Sisters shall rise! ..I guess they are crafting track? Combat track next year still looks pretty tight.

Man Husbando Wars is getting ever harder.
I'm kinda thinking that it'd be neat if in the future we could tour the province ontop of Zhengui, as a walking Oppression Palace Mount Justice, Entertainment/Traveling/Trade Caravan, Fertilization Provider and possible Mad Bao Bling Machine.

(I wonder if Ling Qi's healing costs were subtracted from her rank xD)

Can we please not waste money on a panic room that Suyin already built for us earlier (back when she upgraded the defenses for us) and for a house that we're leaving in a year just to interact with Xuan Shi more?

[] A general upgrade of the home's formation arrays for durability and security (2 green stones)

We can pay him for a fully fortified panic room in our new fief's home after leaving the sect.

The big problem with Wuan She as a husband is his family would have to be willing for him to marry into our family (we are only a baron). Plus his family prob wants us to marry him because of Zhengui. For us to Marry into his family we would have to leave CAI service, which I do not think we are willing to do.

Able. Which we are not able to do.
(Well, without rather major concessions from Xuan to Cai which they'd likely be unwilling to pay just for us. We're a personal retainer to the heir who is also sworn to her service and expected to grow to higher realms, Renxiang would probably be willing to offer us a fair degree of flexibility or to assign us to another role that still benefits her, but we've taken her coin and she'll want her money's worth.)

I want a 7 green stone escape talisman to the next major city instead
as we've seen the rat things fuck with escape tech. Not optimal

SHE GOT IN! GO SU LING!

God that's going to piss her the hell off isn't it. Oops.

EVERY FREAKING TIME LING QI!
EVERY TIME WE GO OUT TOGETHER THIS STUFF HAPPENS!

"Ohh no its just a simple spirit hunt, you need only help tracking"
"Just a little divination, escape talisman at the ready"

I LOST MY CAVE QI! 😣

"Where would I look to investigate disputes between the Bao and the Luo clan?"

Bao Qian stared at her for a moment, and then let out a laugh. "I wonder if I should feel hopeful," he chuckled, and she flushed. "It might be best to study Emperor Si's reign, there were a number of land disputes in that time."
Hm, looks like Ling Qi is looking to poke into Bao Qingling/ Luo Zhong business.

in other news, YES!! MY BAO+LUO ALLIANCE PLAN!!!!! 😃😃😃😃

Why wouldn't a clan with as much diplomatic acclaim ad the Xuan okay the marriage between a talented but ultimately not very important clan member and the head of the clan who is a direct retainer of another ducal clan, which also has very good ties to the presumptive heir of that ducal clan?

Hahahaahah yeah pretty much!

I expect her to be pretty cheesed off when we next see her, possibly specifically at Ling Qi.

For any number of internal and external reasons? We have very little in the way of knowledge about the internal politicking of the Xuan clan and we have only a vague idea of what they want from the rest of the Empire. If there were other means of achieving what they want with fewer resources, then they might choose to pursue those means. If Xuan Shi is, for some reason, needed for other connections that are more valuable then the Xuan clan might pursue those connections instead. And that is just the possibilities outside of the Xuan clan. Internally, there may very well be other maneuverings happening where it would be beneficial for Xuan Shi to not have a marriage with an up and coming member of the Emerald Sea nobility.

Okay, let me come up with the anti-peace of mind argument against the panic room.

It's bad habits. We don't want to train Ling Qi to not notice the cost of things. She needs to be capable of making rational cost-benefit analyses, not blindly doing anything if she's told it will be "good for family". I want her to have some sense of proportion.

We're moving out of the Sect in a year and a half. The panic room would be a major, incredibly expensive investment for something we won't even be able to take advantage of for very long.

Sure, there's no contesting the fact that Ling Qi is a fine catch for a diplomatic alliance! But a clan as important as the Xuan probably have a lot of possible marriage alliances they could make with him, and we don't know enough about the diplomatic state of things to know how the other possibilities for a talented but superfluous ducal scion stack up against "new baronial clan that is probably on track for a viscounty at some point if LQ doesn't die first or lose her Way."

To be clearer about the politics:

Xuan Shi was introduced to Bai Meizhen when they were younger as a possible Bai - Xuan political marriage. The difficulty was deciding on which spirit blood line to choose for the eventual children.

As a political marriage of Xuan Shi and Cai's Highest Vassal, the grandest of ES Count's, Qi clan, it would be much easier to know that the children would be taking after Xuan blood. The real question would be about how that interacts with being a clan so far from the traditional sea, and having Zhengui right there.

so . . . . I do think that it would need a *lot* of work hashing out the various struggles and problems involved. Not the least of which is a ducal line marrying into a retainer. Even if we become the strongest of retainers.
