Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
Also great, we got Hermaeus Mora interested on our little group I bet we will regret it even if its only coming to give us a "gift".
we're screwed if the elders dont come fast.
Nah, it's just that shishigui dude who starting wrecking Xuan Shi's barrier before the teleport incident. It looks like Liao Zhu's silver portal might've been the thing that actually sent them into the liminal realm.

Bad, but not 'sudden Daedric Prince' bad.

edit: Also, tangential to you, but I'm enjoying Hanyi's perspective in this more than Zhengui's, since it's more interesting to see a character like him from someone else's PoV than just Ling Qi's.

Could you elaborate? Hanyi's perspective on Zhengui seems barely different than Ling Qi's, and definitely less different than his own would be. I feel like I'm probably missing something?

Hanyi doesn't have the emotional connection of having raised Zhengui since birth, and also doesn't have the social skill to moderate herself when she starts chewing him out for being silly about Xuan Shi. Kid also has huge self-esteem and jealousy issues that color a lot of what she sees and does, and her perspective as she suddenly confronts some repressed stuff about her mom is an interesting change of pace from LQ.

Zhengui also isn't as willing to calm down with Hanyi as he would with Ling Qi, so the conflict there is different.

Mmm. Kind of most of what I got from this update is "Zhengui's perspective would have been more interesting." Hanyi's great and all, but she isn't the most interesting character in this scene, in terms of what's going on behind her eyes. Between the increasing temper/impatience and yet another fruitless reference to Zhengui's beef with Xuan Shi, our little bro is a painfully compelling viewpoint.

In fairness, we got a little bit more insight into Hanyi's insecurities in the way that she's compared herself to her mother, "too heavy and solid and human to act like a real lady", but for the most-part the perspective was treading explored terrain.
You could also say that listening to somebody get mad and stomp around because of their helplessness is old ground too.

I'm just a bit confused because you described the benefit in terms of seeing Zhengui from an alternative perspective, and Hanyi's thoughts and insights into his character don't read as offering any fundamentally different understanding from what we typically get from Ling Qi's observation.

My first thought when I hear "more interesting" is learning something new about him through the perspective shift, so your phrasing just threw me for a loop, I think. Thanks for the response, though.

Hmm, I don't think we've seen him more than sullen over it, previously? We also haven't seen him lashing out to blame third parties for it, that I can remember. It's certainly a new tier of the behaviour, if that's even what it is.

I don't think Ling Qi has seen Zhengui scared like this, blindly lashing out at everyone around him and not thinking about the situation beyond getting his mom to safety. The only other time I can think of would've been when Ling Qi took that dagger to the clavicle, and we didn't see anything beyond a brief summation.

We're getting a different look through Hanyi's eyes into who he is and how he acts in a stressful moment like this.

Now, I think this is probably as far as I'm willing to go on this, since I don't care to argue with you again about Zhengui.

Fair enough. I'll remain confused, because that doesn't seem like a coherent reason to favor Hanyi's perspective over Zhengui's, but different strokes and all that.

You could kinda relate it to music? Hanyi thought, something about expression and will. Momma could have gotten them out without a problem she knew. Momma wasn't a dumb girl who was too heavy and solid and human to act like a real lady. Big Sis had started as a human and she was still better than Hanyi. Who did she think she was kidding?

The Mist around her thickened, and Hanyi hunched her shoulders. She stared out into the formless Dream around them, ignoring the flickering images that danced in the corners of her vision and began to hum to herself, one of the songs Momma had sung when brushing her hair.

… She had to stop sulking, Hanyi knew. Big Sis was counting on her and Zhengui too. She had promised to trust them, to fight with them. They couldn't fail her now. There had to be something she could do, if she could just figure out how to move in this place…

Hanyi paused then, blinking. She had just sensed something weird.
Are these imaged in the corner of her vision from Ling Qi or the Dream?
Even partially dreamified and unconscious Ling Qi will try to help her family in any way she can. Beautiful.
Also note, Hanyi is actively trying to help the team and be proactive in their survival. This is new and awesome!

Hanyi huffed and turned away, closing her eyes. She hummed the first bar of the tune again, and focused on the ripples it sent out through the dreamspace.

She felt something ripple back, warm and melodious.

Hanyi's eyes widened. She recognized that! She'd been feeling it all the time these past couple days! "Ah, it's the Flower Lady!" Hanyi exclaimed, clapping her hands.

Hanyi can communicate through music! yay! She is progressing so well!

When I combine this,
"Brother Liao remains elusive."
With this,
Churning darkness writhed, stilling and devouring raw dreamstuff. Hanyi's eyes widened as she saw a pale figure rise from the center, surrounded by ribbons of shadow. A single black veined eye, growing like a pustule from a pulsating heart spun and met her gaze.
I'm getting the feeling that it is actually on purpose that Brother Liao is remaining elusive. That he has been hunting this thing and staying invisible so that the creature can't detect him, or knew this thing was hunting for the group amidst the Liminal Realm and hid from the group so that he could ambush the creature and eliminate it.

Or Brother Liao just got lost on the road of life.

Ling Qi, even in her sleep, applied an unconscious hug.
It looked like a giant cocoon, woven of seven colored silk, anchored to Zhengui's back by threads of spun dream. Faint silvery mist leaked constantly from it, pooling around their ankles, wrapping around them in wispy strands. Ling Qi, her Big Sis, was hurt. She didn't understand the stuff Sixiang had babbled as they spun themselves into a cocoon, but she knew that her Sis was in trouble. She had gone too far with her technique and hurt herself dragging everybody into Dream. Sixiang had said that she had to be isolated until they got out or she would leak, and lose important stuff.
Hmm, I *think* the main danger here to Ling Qi was that she's dreaming in the Liminal?
If the place is defined by your self image then falling asleep and losing control of your self image can be deadly.

So everyone's back together eccept Ji Rong and Brother Liao. Chances are, the two are with one another. Otherwise, Ji Rong's gonna be lost for a long while. I wouldn't worry too much about our fellow street kid though. If anyone has a strong enough will to survive for a bit longer, it's probably him.

Well, what you consider a coherent reason and what other people consider a coherent reason can be two very different things, especially when the matter of Zhengui is involved.

Guan Zhi's not there either.

I think it might be her cultivation flaw bleeding here,.because it is a flaw in her way, and therefore in herself

Wonder if this happens all the time during war at the third level
This... particular situation probably doesn't occur all that much given that arts used to transport people in between the liminal and material realm do not seem to be common at all.

The in general principle of straining beyond prior limits and hurting oneself in the process probably happens more often then people would care to admit, especially with the presence of tribulations. See, for example, Xiulan.

I, for one, worry that Zhengui's dual persona — much further from a humans' than half-human Hanyi — would be quite confusing. Add that to the generally confusing nature of the liminal realm, and a possible Zhengui PoV chapter in this situation would be quite confusing. Although I do agree that we could have gotten some meta-information on his beef with beefcake if that choice had won...

I am looking forward to the arc after this. I desperately need a recovery arc from this rollercoaster. Hopefully we get one.
