Xuan Shi's not part of one of the houses in inner province, his is an outer province. Kang's still a better candidate since he's one of the earliest characters yrs conceptualized in the FoD universe.

What are you talking about, Xiulan may fit the other descriptors but she is probably one of the most dilligent cultivators, proably as diligent as the 5 talent monsters (us, Ji Rong, CRX, Sun Liling, Bai Meizhen). Heck, she is probably more diligent than Ji Rong all said. She is just weaker than us and Rong due to lesser talent (even with the boost), just like we are weaker than the ducal scions due to lesser resources to draw on and due to them having a headstart.

We're on turn 8, meaning there should only be four turns left to complete Shenhua ranking mission, and ten for the inter-sect group tournament.

Shenhua's ranking mission isn't until we leave the sect, so we have something like 18 months for that (given 13 months in a year). And, given how far we've made it in only 8 months, giving us another 10 for the Inter-sect tournament will involve significant power boosts, so I'm not too concerned.
After examining all relevant data, I must announce a revision to my previous stance: re the increased activity of the fallen star buried deep underground. It was, in fact, (most likely) not Shenhua harvesting the entity for dress-making materials that has lead to its awakening.
No, it waking up is directly tied to the mysterious thing Dreaming Moon did during our moon auntie dream. Think about it, we made a choice for lost and forgotten ancient lore. The fallen star is an old tale of the Cloud Nomads, lost to the integrated people's of the Celestial Empire that actually live in the region. Dreaming Moon simply chose to breath new life into the tales in the most direct and unmissable manner she could. Ending the slumber of their subject.

Stars and Moon are not really linked by a minion relationship. A recent side story has shown that if anything they are enemies.
It IS wholly in her domain too, to awaken a dreamer from their slumber.
Though in this case it might be to wake them up too early so they get pasted by a strong foe.
...or a bit of revenge on Shenhua for devastating the local fae court. Hard to tell.
Also the Elders pretty much said ranking is temporarily based on field performance and contribution.
Which if anything is actually EASIER, if less reliable to ascend than the duels. Renxiang and Ling Qi are terrors on a live battlefield much more than a duel/competition environment, and our ability to work together with Meizhen, Su Ling and Suyin helps compound each other's strengths.
I'm aware and it doesn't really preclude any aspect of my 100% canon prediction.
In a way it's a shame we're going underground next. We don't really know what the goal of the excursion is, but we do know what kit Ling Qi has. 3rd realm flight sets her apart from peers vs the Cloud Nomads, and she recently started actually learning their language so she can do the scout thing better/properly by gathering indirect intel. Sure, we're good in a fight, but we're not nigh-uniquely for our realm good in a fight or potentially shift strategic-level planning good in a fight. Seems like a sizable value gap between the capabilities to our elders, to me.
It's Li Suyin and Su Ling's show down there, that we know of. One as a researcher, the other as a canary. We're just muscle, unless there's something we don't know. It's not a special role. The setup is basically to be the sidekick/grunt to their story, here. Little stands out as relevant to Ling Qi in particular to chase down there, again at the moment that we know of.
Support-muscle, which is handy for deep delves. Especially with our domain buffs to allies.
Right, and that's fine, it's just not a rare commodity. We're not raking in extra esteem for doing a job others at our level can't do, to the same degree. The context doesn't appear to leverage our less generic capabilities as strongly, meaning standing out less.
Hopefully there's something to engage Ling Qi in the venture besides the welfare of her friends, too. There's some hooks for us upstairs, but so far underground stuff 'belongs' to Li Suyin and maybe some others. Ling Qi isn't engaged with it. I guess maybe we can come up with some questions for Bao Qian based on our soon-to-be experiences? That's kind of weak though.

We are personally interested in punishing and engaging in retaliation against the gnawing ones though.
I would say that Ling Qi is very engaged in this underground project.
That's incredibly boring, but the actual problem with it is it's fruitless. Also pointless. I want concrete or at least compelling objectives, not a license for generalized aggression against targets who by being lumped this way don't matter by definition.

You mean the explicit objective of learning as much as we can about these underground foes that was given to us by Cai? Or perhaps the compelling objective that the Gnawing ones are the only force that has actually been capable of threatening our family and so we want to learn as much about them as possible in order to further guarantee that our family will be safe from another attack?
Or perhaps Ling Qi wants to do as much damage as possible to the Gnawing One's holdings so that their capabilities of projecting force against her home are diminished so that Ling Qi can feel Iike she's actually doing something personally to ensure that her family is safer from future attacks.
Given Cai's direct objective for Ling Qi and the Gnawing Ones own attack against her family, and also nearly killing Ling Qi, it would seem that Ling Qi has a much more vested interest in the Gnawing Ones than in the Cloud Barbarians at the moment.
Technically, Cai Renxiang tasked us with finding out what the Bao know about them/what they're hiding, which is distinct from tasking us with finding out about them.
I'd be quite happy if Ling Qi chose to approach the mission as an opportunity to learn more about the underground and the threat it represents. That's the kind of mindset and goal we can work with and weigh against various factors while we're making choices and be interesting. It'd also represent some development in Ling Qi's character where she actually considers facts, like, important. And it's 100% Hidden Moon approved.
Just wanting to smash them up really hard is eh. Yes, this is dismissive and biased language, but I just don't think we have the context to find crunching up forward enemy camps a satisfying way to pursue the goals you suggest. The infrastructure we'd be attacking hasn't been narratively established as important or relevant, so we'd be stumbling on and wrecking things and if that's all we're doing, there's just not any investment. Destroying stuff can definitely be part of a satisfying romp through enemy territory, though.
Well, yes and no. On offense, we're actually total crap against nomads, because our flight directly isolates us from allies in terrain that favors the enemy. Defensively or during scouting, it gives us access to an entire extra dimension of movement which serves to neutralize the enemy advantage to a significant degree.

Possibly, but as I understand it capturing a cultivator of that stature alive when they don't want to be requires large force disparities based on the mechanics we know. Force we can't really spare or allocate effectively yet
