@yrsillar could we get a summary of the current function of our Domain Weapon before we decide what art to smush into it? The big thing is whether it still has a short-range music AoE that damages enemies or not. That was, originally, the primary focus of the weapon; it's what set it apart and the reason it was chosen because of the perceived advantage it offered. In-story, I'm not sure this has ever clearly manifested, but it hasn't been established as not the case either.

Narrative presence has been thin, so it would be useful if we had a proper look at how it works in your mind, before deciding how to modify its impact with an art.
Mmm, if art integration changes it up enough though, then how it works *now* is irrelevant. The critical question is how it would work with the art integrated.

The last time it had a function shift it left lingering questions though. I'm not sure the ability we selected most recently has ever actually been used, and it's unclear whether the original AoE was abandoned or not. I think we need a clear before and after to really be sure of what we're choosing. Especially if our vote options aren't extremely explicit in their effects. Without a clear picture of right now, we can't really extrapolate the intended meaning of presented options.

Also, I hope the physical form of the weapon changes. A twisted ornate 'dagger' spewing mist never seemed to fit Ling Qi except for the mist, which you could stick on just about anything.

So I guess we have this lady to thank for the ability to go dancing in the moonlight.

And in regards to the faces of the moon, is she gonna represent the dark side of the moon?
No. She is The Black Madam, the New Moon or Hidden Moon.

She is about Study, Communication, Perception, Resolve, and Darkness with Self-Sacrificing despite the grief of those that love you. This interlude very firmly proves why we are in Hidden Moon's good graces. Our Resolve is nuts. Dreams are temporary, Grinning is just a smile on the wind, Hidden is the Resolute. Solid. Firm.

Look, parenting is rewarding or whatever, sure, but real change doesn't come from children, it comes from glaring at the sky for a hundred years.
yeah Hidden Moon, Eldest Phase, had plenty of kids and was like
"How the fuck can I protect my kids? Fk it, you know what? That's it.
I'm beating up the goddam sky."

much more in character. Children in danger because the sky is evil? Cultivate for a hundred something years and then beat that mofo up.

It looks like Guiding Moon was the eldest, the one that was born from Mother Earth. She was weak, and thus could only truly Guide three days in a month, offering lesser protections on others and none at all when her face was hidden.
The Hidden Moon came to cover that lack.

"I have gazed upon thy light for one hundred years, and learned thy tongue in the same, O feeble vermin, and know the lie of thy words. The blood of warriors boils in fen and ocean deep; it churns deep in Mother's veins, and clings to Father's heights. Thou art laggards and cowards all, as sneaking vermin and scavenger birds. Thou feared Mother, and thou feared Father, and thou fear their children most of all. Know this, of malicious ones. Thou art counted, and thou art named."

The woman's quill completed the first character, and the world shook as the great northern star, brightest of the stellar host howled. The stars light dimmed and softened, and a drifting thread of silver filtered down from the sky to coil around the sharp eyed woman. "To the moon do I offer thy names and thy light," the woman said, a hundred years and a lifetime of spite in her words. "Peer through the curtains as thou wilt, but never again shall thy malice reach any but the highest of peaks. To the moon I offer thy light, and thy hunger. Though the dark might remain full of terrors, never again will the night sky bring fear of its own."
Black Madame: "[Steal]"

She let the Stars bombard her, and used their relentless attacks to learn of their nature, their true and complete nature, then seized their power and offered it to the Moon.

You can see how the other Faces derive between the Guiding and Hidden sides AND the hidden factor: the stolen power and nature of the Stars.

actually, wow that sort of makes all of the phases/faces of the moon explicit individuals and their disciples that have given themselves unto the Guiding/original Moon in a variety of ways to add to the Unified Moon. The most assertive of them creating new phases? Moon is a guide, but a guide needs to be able to see and then scare away / beat wolves and dogs sometimes. The guide needs to be able to create and inspire sometimes. The guide needs to be able to help their pupils reflect on themselves, as well as reflect on themselves to make sure they're guiding as best they can. Sometimes the guide also needs to be restorative, and healing.

Does that mean the Yang Sun is somewhat the reverse? Only the ones that are successfully submissive while changing the understanding of Sun are able to express as Times of Day? Because Sun is an endless fighter in an endless war, but a war needs logistics and supportive elements and tacticians.

These spirits were Yin and Yang expressions right? but humanity is whole, both yin and yang. Bringing a bit of the complementary element in, is like the little dots in the yin-yang circle right? Seems like a+ world building to me

While Moon is mostly Yin, not all phases are.
Dreaming is Yang I think for example.
well that's what I mean. Moon is a Yin spirit, but both have those little dots of the other in them right? Yin needs the performance, the expression, the creativity, the intervention, the reshaping and stealing of energy
what I'm saying is that I think those little dots are the human insertion of the other into the spirit, the mixing of Yin in Yang and Yang in Yin that makes them more potent. Just like on the small scale, spirits becoming humanized makes them stronger because they can focus their energies into specific things, or shape their energies into more efficient tasks, the human ascension into the great spirit of Unified Moon makes Moon more capable and able. It also would explain why Moon Sempai thinks he can shift Bloody Moon to be more just. He's right, he's just crazy to try to do so. And yet, that's the only way it'll work. The actions of good people doing what is just not because they can get power or achieve it, but because the pursuit of it is morally right and should be done for it's own sake

what I'm saying is that I think those little dots are the human insertion of the other into the spirit, the mixing of Yin in Yang and Yang in Yin that makes them more potent.
I don't think inserting the human element makes spirits more powerful.
I think it makes them more flexible which may allow them to better adapt to changing circumstances.
Better application of power, but not more power.

Turn 8: 1-1 Integration
The Singing Mist Blade hummed in her grasp, it's song quiet as she held it in front of her face, studying the curves of the metal and the uncountable characters finely etched into the curves of the twisting blade. A domain weapon was an odd thing, almost extraneous in many situations. Ling Qi's acted as a pestering wasp, buzzing about enemies and distracting them, infecting her enemies with enfeebling qi through the medium of its song.

But it never quite fit. She had trained until she could move it like she would any other limb, but holding it in her hand, it didn't really feel like part of her body or spirit. It was an… attachment. Ling Qi released the polished handle, never meant for a wielders touch and let the blade float over her lap, humming softly and trailing mist. She looked up to see the girl sharing the meditation room with her.

Cai Renxiang sat across from her, next to the vent in the heiress' own meditation room. Her own domain weapon, a twisting ribbon of silk hung with tiny bells, floated between her hands. The girl's eyes were half closed, and the silk rippled with prismatic light. Ling Qi looked down at her own weapon with a frown, feeling it through her connection. It was only recently that she had felt that incongruous feeling, even as she wielded the blade with more precision than ever before.

"What is our plan, now that challenges are closed?" Ling Qi asked absently, feeling the way her qi trickled through the artificial channels carved into the blade.

"We will need be at the forefront of the Sect's military efforts," Cai Renxiang replied calmly. "Our efforts during the incursion have been rewarded, have they not?"

Ling Qi let out a disgruntled sound at the response, her frown deepening. She glared at her unresponsive blade. "Is that really satisfactory?"

"Can't stand being beholden to chance huh?" Sixiang chuckled silently in her head.

"It is not," Cai Renxiang replied. She did not open her eyes. "But matters are being decided above our heads for the moment. We must simply prepare to snatch opportunity as it passes by. To seek it out at this moment will reflect poorly upon us. I share a degree of your discontent however. We will need be somewhat aggressive in volunteering for duty. I think. I have signed up for front line operations in the Wall."

"...Will they really let you do that?" Ling Qi asked, giving her a dubious look. Testing aside, she was still the heir of the Cai.

"Mother would be displeased if they did not," her liege replied with certainty, easily picking up Ling Qi's real question.
"There's not coddling your kids and then there's that," Sixiang grumbled. "And that's not even the thing she's worked up about."

Ling Qi could see where Sixiang was coming from, but she didn't disagree. While she would not claim to know Cai Renxiang's heart, she was fairly certain that the girl had at least one thing in common with her. She would not be satisfied with less than her best. "...My friend, Su Ling, hinted at something going on with the enemies below. Li Suyin is probably involved too. I'll see if I can get my name on the shortlist for that."

At that, Cai Renxiang cracked an eye open. "Is that so? Very good. I will be relying upon you to keep up. Please do not forget your other tasks."

Ling Qi pursed her lips. "That Wang guy, right? I'll look into it."

"You're trying to brush up on tactics right? You should ask him for advice. People always like to feel learned, and it's easy to feel positively toward someone who asks for your help," Sixiang whispered.

Ling Qi grunted in response. It wasn't the first time Sixiang had suggested that since they had 'returned' but it kind of irked her pride. He had been rather dismissive of her at the party. Approaching from a position of weakness didn't sit right with her.

"Do you believe you have finished forging your connection?" Cai Renxiang asked, interrupting her thoughts.

Ling Qi glanced down at her weapon, feeling her qi soaked into every bit of it's spiritual presence. Faintly she heard the strain of an unclear melody. She cleared her mind, turning her focus fully back to the weapon and then nodded. "Yes. So what does integration entail anyway?"

"There are many texts available on the subject," Cai Renxiang admonished.

Ling Qi smiled faintly. "I learn better from people. Besides, I would like to know your thoughts on the matter, Lady Renxiang."

Cai Renxiang let out a dissatisfied hum, but did not admonish her. Ling Qi took it as a tentatively good sign. Since that day at Zhengui's hill, her liege had… not relaxed per say, but had been a little more permissive in private. "At the most base mechanical level, it is an exercise in spiritual surgery, transferring an art and the meridians it occupies to new housing. It is permanent, the first of many such steps we will take on the road to the peak of cultivation. While this one is a small sacrifice, a matter of utility rather than true loss, it is wise to consider the implications well."

Ling Qi looked worriedly at the blade. Thoughts of the sacrifices necessary for higher cultivation were troubling, but she was well beyond the point of stopping. "And what is the point of that?"

"It trains the mind for the stages which come after," Cai Renxiang replied calmly, letting her eyes drift shut again. "A cultivator is not merely their body, and a cultivator's body is not merely flesh. Even if you can speak the words, you do not understand them without experience. These exercises replace much trial and error which our ancestors needed perform to ascend the realms."

Ling Qi understood. "You called that explanation base and mechanical. Is there something more to it?" She asked, and she felt Sixiang chuckle.

Cai Renxiang was silent for a time, but eventually she answered. "It is not possible to excise and transfer a piece of ones spirit to a new bodily vessel without affecting the self. You know that climbing the realms of cultivation requires sacrifices, things cast aside. What you place in your domain weapon is something which will remain with you always."

Ling Qi was quiet, looking down on her blade. "...If you do not mind, what did you put in your weapon?"

The silk floating between Cai Renxiang's hands rippled, and the bells sounded faintly, ephemeral and echoing. The crimson eyes splayed across her chest narrowed in hunger, and the girls own eyes looked up at Ling Qi. "My desire for purity. You know well my attitude toward disorder and uncleanliness."

Ling Qi glanced away. "...I said I was sorry for putting the tea leaves back wrong," she mumbled. Rarely had she seen her liege more blatantly incensed as she had been this morning. "...that doesn't sound like something you would want to be rid of though."

"It is not, nor is that the purpose of the exercise," Cai Renxiang agreed quietly. "For as long as I can remember, I took pleasure in ordering my surroundings, even more so after my awakening. Yet… the world is untidy. It can be improved, but ones plans will never be executed to perfection. This is not because the world cannot be predicted or ordered, but because you have failed to account for all factors. It is important to be able to accept some degree of disorder and uncleanliness in action, but it is more important to not forget the goal I am seeking past that tolerance."

Ling Qi nodded slowly. "It's what drives you. By enshrining it in your domain, you make sure you never lose touch with it."

"Precisely," Cai Renxiang agreed.

Ling Qi hummed in consideration. It was a little peek into the other girls head, and for all that Sixiang grumbled, she even understood, just a little. Though she had never been in a position to act on it, wasn't having things in order, having things under control something that anyone would want? She had spent many a night out in the cold, wishing she had more control over her life, even if she had not understood that to be the core of her wish.

"Mm, I'm not sure I agree, but this isn't really the time, besides it's not like you're going to do the same as her," Sixiang grumbled.

Still, she had questions yet. "How does that work with people who have multiple domain weapons or change them later then?"

"The weapon remains simply physical housing, though the process is longer and more difficult, it remains possible to transfer the meridians to a new device. Multiple weapons are a matter of style and arts, it is unusual to have more than one integrated weapon. It would be counter intuitive given that it is a practice exercise for the functions of higher cultivation. Perhaps it might be useful if one were certain that they were not going to reach the fourth realm?" Cai Renxiang said musingly, brushing her fingers across her ribbon.

Ling Qi nodded, looking at her blade in consideration.

"Have you decided which art you wish to integrate?" Cai Renxiang asked.

Ling Qi breathed out and nodded. She had spent the whole of the whole day previous and this morning considering it. She wanted to integrate…

[] Her oldest active art, which had seen her through so many trials Forgotten Vale Melody
[] Her mentor Zeqing's most potent gift, the Frozen Soul Serenade
[] The sometimes clashing art but often decisive art, Thousand Ring Fortress

Each Art will take three meridians to integrate, which will be permanently removed. Exact ratios for multiple meridian arts and the details of each ones integrated form will be decided in later votes as will the exact nature of the included trait. Please just worry about which art you want to integrate now. Domain Weapon slotted arts maintain most of their base functions and can still have successors made of them. However the integrated art will grow with the development of your domain.

To put it simply...

The integrated art is basically getting a free "advance with LQ" without a successor creation process (though we can still do that if we want a variant taken in a different direction).

Okay. Cripes. SONNOVA-
Yeah.

...IDK about you guys but FVM and TRF seem like potential canidates I like. FSS...Well. I'd like it MORE if we could counter-balance it with plenty of heat, to remind ourselves that there's more then the cold outside but...Eh. I'm too biased against some of these elements in general I think.

Welp. That sure is a decision to make. FVM seems appropriate, given what our domain weapon does... but it's FVM.

Rules question, @yrsillar: do the meridians we give up still "count"? That is, if we excise three meridians, do we still count as having them for the purpose of opening new meridians and the meridian softcap at 54?

Thank you. So it's not like we can gain the meridians back; it's kind of like we scrunch the art down to three meridians and keep it permanently equipped. That's inconvenient, but makes sense.

For reference's sake, here are a bunch of quotes about the themes of the arts in question, plus the domain weapon itself:
  • A twisting obsidian blade that releases a mist between its coils. It pulses frequently, releasing bursts of boundless Hunger, coveting all before it's glorious sight. The holes that line it's white bone hilt release a terrifying inhuman whistling screech as it soars through the air.

Dexterity+Woodwind. Darkness. Spiritual. +15 to Penetration. Damage D. Health D.
    - When a target struck by the singing mist blade is assailed by a damaging technique from its user, the swords song echoes, enhancing the damage and penetration of the technique.
There are many forgotten places in the world where human kind does not tread easily. This technique is a part of the chronicle of a long dead wanderer, composed into music and offered to the smiling moon. It speaks of mist covered valleys hidden deep in the mountains and the mischievous and hungry spirits that wait in the dark, and the loneliness of the wanderer's path.

An old and well polished art developed by a once powerful but defunct family within the Emerald Sea province. The user joins themselves to the qi of the land, becomes as one of the mighty trees which stand in the deepest forests of the province, vital and sturdy. Yet one tree is not a forest, and so the user may extend their vitality to their allies.

Winter's Muse sings from its heart, the place of true cold, where even fire freezes and light dies. The truth of cold is the absolution of endings, and in this melody lies some small part of that truth. Its notes freeze blood and qi alike, its notes often the last thing its listeners hear in this world.

FVM and FSS seem like they'd integrate most easily with our weapon, insofar as they are darkness/music arts and our domain weapon already carries that. I have no idea how we'd put TRF in it, but Ling Qi apparently seems to think it's possible.
What you place in your domain weapon is something which will remain with you always
And this is basically saying that whatever we externalize is something that we are making a permanent part of ourself. I'm not quite sure how that tracks with, well, externalizing it (rather than internalizing the lessons), but I'll trust that CRX knows what she's talking about.

Alright, well to start, I'll just bring back my old suggestions about FVM's potential here:

I've been thinking that potentially sticking FVM into our Domain Weapon would actually be very helpful with everything we want to do with fields, and allowing PLR more room to shine. The basic problem with, for example, PLR is that it really wants to be used the same way as FVM - as the field that we use as the background element to the rest of our strategy. In theory, yes, they actually stack well. In practice, if we try to layer everything we start running out of actions, and getting to the "just attack them already dammit" point.

Off-loading FVM responsibility to our domain weapon would mean that we could just have that spewing out as our background element, and then we personally start building up PLR/BKSD. This allows us rapid buildup of either defensive or offensive field effects when we need them, and by allowing us to focus on our new arts helps them get more focus and presence, rather than being pushed to the side by FVM.

That being said, FSS is obviously really strong here, and works great if we just want a really effective offensive weapon. Otoh, in some ways I'm less a fan of that? The domain weapon has always been a bit awkward in terms of integration into the narrative, and continuing to try to fight actively with it might just continue that. FVM could work well there in terms of allowing it to do stuff visibly, but be in the background at the same time and not be to tricky in terms of how it engages with things.

TRF.... just strikes me as the worst. It would basically be a buff turret throwing out invisible buffs. Most boring thing ever.

Woah, we're starting strong this turn.

I am guessing whichever art we pick, and the themes it carries will be set in stone as an in-alterable part of our self?

Or are we sacrificing the art itself to give our weapon a boost? Like, if we integrate FVM into our Domain Weapon, does that mean we can no longer use it as a regular art?
