Do we know if that holds over in HP Mechanics? Pretty much all magic save Potions is near instantaneous, after all, usually only talking slightly longer than the incantation for effects to happen.

Could be that it works like somekind of animated quill where the text slowly appears or something. So while the spell itself is instantly cast, the effect (writing the skillbook) takes time to appear.

Re: Write.

Write takes time to complete. The cast is instant, but it would still take a while to finish. And while you wouldn't have to stand there with your wand pointed at the paper the whole time, you would have to stay close.

Common Room Conversations
You decide not to head to sleep just yet. According to Percy curfew isn't for another hour or so anyway, and you're just too awake after the events of the day to get much sleep. So you remain in the common room, with Hermione and Neville staying with you. You three aren't the only ones staying up. There's the twins with another kid, one with dreadlocks, in a corner talking to each other, some older students who seem to be hurriedly completing assignments, judging from how they've several books open around them, and another older boy who is writing out a list of some sort, occasionally staring at another, older one that has 'Quidditch Try-Outs' listed on it.

You and your friends move to sit down on a couch near the fireplace, and silence reigns for a few minutes. You finally decide to break it.

"So. Hogwarts. An interesting place. What with talking hats and warnings about death on the third floor."

This last draws a huff from Hermione, the girl crossing her arms over her chest. "Honestly! That last had to be a joke! What sort of person would keep something guaranteeing death in a school!"

Neville speaks up, a little shyly even after the ride over with Hermione, "W-well, maybe it's something for the upper years that lower years can't handle? Something for seventh year Defense classes or something?"

You and Hermione both pause for a minute before you shrug your shoulders. "I might go poking around anyway later on." Before Hermione can get much further than opening her mouth and looking indignant you continue, "After all, none of us were ordered to stay away from the third-floor corridor. Just told it's out of bounds to those who don't want a painful death. And while I don't want one soon I'm not going to claim to know that I don't want my eventual future death to be a painful one." Also there's that quest. But you don't need to mention that.

Hermione looks at you a bit oddly while Neville nods his head slightly. "That makes sense. I think I might join you for that."

The bushy haired girl rolls her eyes and sits back on the couch, crossing her arms. "Boys!"

Another few seconds of silence until you speak up again. "How'd you two like to start a study group? Or, well... Continue in the case of you and me, I suppose, Hermione. I know a few tricks, Hermione here is scary smart," This is said with your eyes turned toward Neville, though when you continue you're looking at Hermione, "And Neville here is good with practical stuff. And he's been living as a wizard his whole life. He could probably fill in a lot of gaps for us. Keep us from making stupid mistakes."

The two of them nod their heads and Neville asks, "What about others? Susan and Hannah, Ron, Draco?"

The question causes you to pause a moment before moving your shoulders in a small shrug. "I don't see an issue with it. As long as they're willing to work and learn while we're studying. No goofing off and all. There'll be time for games, but when we're studying that's time for study and not games."

The two nod again and everyone falls silent once more.

Until the dam finally bursts for Hermione.

"How did you figure out that rat was an animagus? I know you said you used detect evil but that's a spell from that game, so obviously that's not how. And how did you turn him back into a human? Or stun him? Or close the door with your wand? That's all terribly advanced magic, and I don't-"

Used to Hermione's babble from study groups with her you just reach up to place two fingers over her lips, instantly silencing her, all while you continue to stare at the fire. Neville is a bit less used to it, and is doing his best to not show is amusement at the situation. Or his own curiosity about the answers.

[ ] Make sure your conversation would be secure and explain about being the Gamer.

[ ] Stick with your accidental magic story.

Not sure I want to tell them the full truth just yet. On the other hand, lying so directly is not a good way to achieve friendship. Dunno.

I will say that if we do tell them, we should explain that its a secret, tell them that no one (except Moody) knows, and ask them to keep quiet about it.

We're making the conversation secure, I think that's accounted for.

We ARE Moody's student and all.

I meant actually telling them to keep it quiet. For example, it would be quite plausible for Hermione for example to simply assume that Dumbledore and/or other adults all know, and blurt out the secret to them. Though in truth, if we reveal our secret to those two, we might aswell tell Dumbledore also. Its not like we know Neville and Hermione massively better compared to Dumbledore.

Still, having people willing to help out would be usefull. Hermione and Neville might be able to help in completing class quests and such.

We need somebody to exploit party mechanics anyway.

But that's the point I was making, we're Moody's student and rather inconceivable that we leave out something like that in character.

[X] I do not want to lie to you. On the other hand... It is an important secret. Did you know that some wizards can read your thoughts? How about this: I will teach you Occlumency, this is an art that protects your mind from being read. When you can protect your thoughts I will tell you. Deal?

We will need an inner circle.
And lying to them directly now... It would be really hard to correct later.

By teaching them occlumency we show that we are willing to trust them and to help them get better, and have an activity with them that will help us deepen the ties and friendship between us.

About Occlumency helping to memorize and recall information and helping in studying... unless Halpo said something to that effect earlier, that's fanon AFAIK. Other than that, I think this is a good idea.

As far as I know, Occlumency only helps in those tangentially because the discipline emphasizes control of your thoughts.

Though I'm not sure how practical it is to teach it to them, or how much need they have for it. Mind readers are kind of rare, and you can't practice without one(unless we learn to read minds and then practice mind wrestling with our friends, assuming they don't mind us seeing all their private matters) without Gamer breaking the rules. Sure, a lot of them would be interested in poking at Harry, but Neville and Hermione, not so much.

Dumbledore and Snape are both mind readers that are likely to read both our minds and our friends minds and we can level up legamins with this

They're rare, yeah, but at least three of them are within the castle right now, and one of them possesses no scruples whatsoever about reading other people's minds. He's also coincidentally someone we don't want to be aware of our ability for as long as possible.

Just saying, we're better off telling them about our power without teaching them Occlumens first, because the only way to learn it in a reasonable amount of time is to use the Gamer by partying up and boosting their stats.

Sure, there are mind readers, but there's safety in obscurity, their minds are unlikely to be read for years.

Edited the post a bit, but if the purpose is not to let Dumbledore and Snape know about the Gamer, then you just defeated the purpose of the exercise.

At the moment, it's just to not let them know about the gamer ability however it also serves to prevent death eaters and students that might have the ability to read minds from reading them

Are they really? Very soon Voldemort is going to hear about us capturing Pettigrew on the train, and it's going to catch his interest. When he finds out that our mind is protected, who is he going to check next? Our closest friends.

You have a Catch-22 there, because it takes months, given an experienced Legimens to practice again, to have any competency in it for normal people.

Unless you tell them about the Gamer first to buff the required stats via grinding, it's effectively just telling them no, because even if they are good friends, they aren't going to volunteer for us to invade their minds on a regular basis to learn how to resist it. It's kind of the biggest invasion of privacy there is.
