The Power(Harry Potter/The Gamer)

Hermione: Well, Harry -- Have the lambs stopped screaming?
Harry: Jesus Christ, Hermione? What is wrong with you?
Hermione: PFTPPTPFTPFPT
[Harry spontaneously develops teleport]
Hermione: *looks smug* I knew that would work.

Now there're some Custom Abilities I could really get behind that we can't get out of a book - combine Detect Bloodthirst and Detect Lies:

[Detect Joke] and [Detect Sarcasm]

We can train the first up on the Weasleys and the second by reading Snape's essay grading comments and (we need to introduce them first) report cards.

Plus I doubt they're sapient to start with.
IIRC there's a line about the adolescent Mandrakes uprooting themselves sneaking off into pots belonging to Mandrakes of the other gender, so they can at minimum identify members of the opposite gender in their species, understand that when they're being observed by humans they get put back in their own pots, and have a drive to reproduce that drives them to seek out the opposite gender when possible.

These seem like signs of intelligence to me, though Rowling never really went out of her way to hit the readers with "OH HEY MANDRAKES ARE PEOPLE ENJOY THAT MANDRAKE BASED POTION READERS MUAHAHA!"

Or that can entirely be explained by magical bullshit, pheremones, or something else and they're not really intelligent at all. As much crappy stuff as there is in the Harry Potter universe I don't think Rowling would have had schoolchildren preparing sapient beings for harvest.

In other news, Timeturners might be the wizarding world's analogue to horse-glue.

Read all about it!

Apply the argument to Mandrakes as well though. Not very intelligent, and thus, open game.
Mandrake intelligence is kinda uncertain; they have human-like behaviours, but whether those are the result of instinct or genuine intelligence is never specified. Although I honestly wouldn't be surprised if either case was true (see below).
Not like Potterverse wizards are kind to non-human species for the most part, unless they can at least talk.
Very true; hedgehogs into pincushions, anybody?

"Oh, hey, Tanner! We're going to need to send you out of town for the weekend to handle issues for a very important client! Oh, and we won't be assigning you a company laptop because you're just dealing with hardware and wiring for the client, not software. So... See you when you get back next week!"

v.v

One day I'm going to have to get my own laptop, rather than rely on my desktop. But they're expensive.

Ah well.

If you're actually in the market for a laptop they're dirt cheap. Tigerdirect has some decent ones on sale right now I think, as does Newegg if their circulars are correct.

EDIT: And barring that you can get a 10.1" tablet with a keyboard for under 100 bucks if you'd rather not go the full blown laptop route right now.

(Just trying to be helpful; I'm not in retail nor do I work for Tigerdirect or Newegg.)

Visiting Hagrid
You speak to your friends and eventually decide on taking Neville and Hermione, of course, as well as Susan and Hannah. When you arrive at his hut on the grounds and knock there's a scrambling noise behind the door, followed by loud barking.

"Back, Fang! Back!" You hear Hagrid call out before the door opens to reveal his hairy face. "Come on in." As the door opens further you see him struggling to keep ahold of the collar of an enormous black boarhound.

A look in shows that the hut is only one room ,with hams and pheasants hanging from the ceiling, a kettle boiling on the fire, and a massive bed in one corner with a patchwork quilt over it.

"Make yerselves at home," Hagrid says, letting go of Fang once everyone is inside. The boarhound bounds for your group, moving from one to another of you, sniffing at each of you. Clearly he isn't as fierce as he looks.

"This is Neville Longbottom, Hermione Granger, Susan Bones, and Hannah Abbot," you inform Hagrid. Hagrid smiles and greets each of them, before looking at Neville. "I knew your parents. Right good folk, they were."

Neville doesn't quite look how to respond to that, besides with a saddened casting of his eyes downward. So you take over and direct the conversation, telling Hagrid all about how your week went, and encouraging the others to do the same. As you speak Hagrid starts to hand out these shapeless lumps with rasins in them. You...

As you all talk to Hagrid you pull out a cutting from the Daily Prophet:

Gringotts Break-In Latest
Investigations continue into the break-in a
Gringotts on 31 July, widely believed to be the
work of Dark wizards or witches unkown.

Gringotts Goblins today insisted that nothing
had been taken. The vault that was searched had in
fact been emptied that same day.

"But we're not telling you what was in there, so
keep your noses out if you know what's good
for you," said a Gringotts spokesgoblin this after-
noon.

"Hagrid," you speak up, accidentally interrupting Hermione asking a bunch of questions that Hagrid looks quite relieved to not have to answer. Until he spots the clipping you were reading. "That Gringotts break-in happened on my birthday! Do you think it was happening while w were there?"

Hagrid refused to meet your eyes after you ask that, instead just grunting and offering you another rock cake. Frowning slightly you recall the package Hagrid took from vault seven hundred and thirteen. And that the package was the only thing in it, so it could be that that vault was the one the article was talking about. You...

The Rock Cakes Bring to Mind Dwarf Bread from Discworld. Those were used as weapons sometimes too. . .

-[X] Ask him everything you can about the forest as well as all the animals he knows of and what he can tell us about them. [Beast-Mastery and Woodlore skill gains].
--[X] Ask him if he would be willing to actually show us the forest at a later time under his adult supervision?
-[X] Also ask him if he has heard about the capture of Peter Pettigrew. Apparently he was a death eater and a traitor all along! Ask if Hagrid knew Pettigrew and if he can tell us anything about him and/or the current situation with Pettigrew?
