The Power(Harry Potter/The Gamer)

...still think trying to teach them D&D is silly, though.
Short term wise - kind of agree.

Think long term though. Gaming groups can stick together for years. It is activity that crosses house boundaries. It lends itself to a larger group of friends than the Golden Trio. It encourages people to approach magic from a totally different paradigm and could potentially spark all sorts of spell experimentation. It encourages cooperation and a team based combat thought process (might be stretching a little with that one).

No, I never even claimed he's NOT a dick. The positive is his influence, and that it would be fun if we can pull it off. The thing is, it's not just Harry wanting to be friends with him, Draco want's to be friends with us. He would compromise to get it. If he won't, he's not worth it.
Compromise is a two-way street. Compromise isn't worth it.

Out of curiosity, what do you think "friend" means? I'm starting to think we have different definitions.

Trolldason, are you seriously picking an argument for the sake of picking an argument? All the reasons not to put serious time and effort into humanizing Draco have done been made, and ... I believe that picture someone used on me twenty pages back is relevant here... being stuck in an echo chamber, and refusing any arguments that invalidates your own. Or as I dubbed it, Pulling a Savage (Adam), that is, rejecting reality and substituting your own.

You think Lucius Malfoy has no reason to stop his son from becoming a Blood Traitor?o_O

I... I don't even know what to say to that...
You think Lucius has reason to stop his son from befriending the Boy who lived, improving his grades, gaining more moderation, cunning and self control that come with moderating biases and that is generally useful for an heir?
His father could trivially undo any progress we might miraculously be able to do. It's not predestination, it's upbringing.
Also Sirius

Because he won't become a Blood Traitor. Atleast not while his Dad is alive. We are moderating his view on Blood Purism. Going from "Kill the Mud-bloods!" to "I GUESS not ALL Mud-bloods aren't filth. I'm still better than them though".
If we are still here after this year, we can work on taking him further, but we would have to handle his dad, both to further progress Draco, and in general (because if we don't take out Volde this year, he's going to be in contact with his Death Eaters)

Our "Friendship" with Draco is more of a Proto-friendship. Somewhere between business acquaintances, and actual friends. We will be friendly, we will help each other out, we might even hang out. It could even be fun, we are both benefiting from the interactions.

IT wouldn't take serious time and investment. No more than being friends with literally anyone else would be (not even added time. We will not be able to be away for hours every day grinding without suspicions being raised. We have to spend a fair bit of time out in the real world doing normal things, and generally not grinding. Some of this time can be dedicated to Draco). As I have covered. It won't cost us friendship with anyone else either, because if he is going to push that, we drop him.

If it risks truing him into a Blood Traitor you bet he has

Sirius was brave. Draco is a coward who's self-image is bound up in his family's wealth and position.

See as far as people like that Malfoys are concerned that is being a Blood Traitor. For a better idea of their views on muggleborns re-read the lines of Walpurgia Black's portrait. That is what the Malfoys really believe behind the smoke screen they throw up out of necessity.

[X] Invite him in, to join in the conversation/game, but explain you don't have room for his friends in the compartment as well.

No, it definitely would. Spending time with actual friends is not an investment, it is fun in and of itself. "Investment", as in resources expended in the hope of future payoff, applies to Draco and only Draco.

What are you planning on doing with however much of Malfoy's influence you can wrangle?

First and only thing that comes to mind is getting an invite over to his house. First thing that comes to mind immediately after that thought is the sound of a train screeching to a halt as I shout "METAGAMING" at myself really loudly. First thing after that is the sound of Dumbledore lol, noping all the way home, since that would literally be walking into the snake pit.

Time spent with Draco could definitely be fun. He won't be a rude butt towards us, he wants to be friends with us. He'd actually be trying his best to be friends. And if he knows we dislike him being rude to other people, he will cut down on that while we are around.
We can Study with him, work on Home-work, play games, and generally everything we do with any of our friends. Maybe even WITH our other friends. Again, he's a lot more interested in being our friend than we are him (we are interested, just not as interested), so he would be tolerant while our company.

We (Harry, not you and me we) would like him in this instance. IC, he hasn't done enough to make us dislike him currently, and if we play the situations right, he won't period. He'd be the friend that doesn't really get along with our other friends very well (because, as I said, if he goes farther than "doesn't get along well" we drop him), but is still our friend.
What are you planning on doing with however much of Malfoy's influence you can wrangle?
Change the world. The Malfoy's are the main opposition Dumbledore faces. Remove that opposition, and Dumbledore can do all the good work he wills. And if we are still here later, we can change up stuff ourselves.

You assume all this. He would probably see our attitude as being wrong, and do his level best to convert us to the 'right' way of thinking. Which would drive away our other friends. I mean, who would want to spend time with a racist boy?

I think you are massively overestimating the Malfoys. They are one of many pure-blood families with great political influence. Lucius is likely the leader of their political faction because he is the most charismatic of the current generation.

And until we reach the juncture were I'm proven wrong, it is entirely possible that I am right. Currently, it does not require any investment of resources that we don't have plethora of, and doesn't come with any penalties. So no reason to go against it.
As for the "driving away our friends", we'd let him know what we think (not that he's a ass, but that "it's annoying when you do the thing, please stop"). If he doesn't, we drop him, because as I agreed with you, the other friends are more important. Until he does or doesn't, there is no reason to not go along with the plan. Because, as I keep point out, we can drop out of this plan the moment it starts being negative to us. We are not buckled in.

He just walked into the room like he owned the place, insulted several of our friends, and told us that he could teach us to make the right sort of friends.

How does accepting him not hurt our current relationships?

True, we can't prove that you are wrong... Much like we can't prove that there is no teapot halfway between earth and mars at this point.

Yeah, but we just don't care about your possible redeeming Malfoy plan, or want to have any part of your plan... Or any part of Malfoy.

All of Malfoy's influence comes from money; we don't need Malfoy for influence with Fudge or the other people we do have money and can bribe people ourselves (gasp!) or use our fame and/or bribe people. It's not hard.

EDIT: And we can farm stuff for money from Item worlds. As ID barrier creation goes up so does our time compression so we can spend more time there and have more time to do other stuff also. So we really don't lose anything by bribing people ourselves.

In order; He's a nerd wanting to look cool, and failing horribly. He insulted Ron, a stranger, and it was in defense of him laughing at his name. He offered to help us, and, under no implication of our current friends being the wrong sort (which we prove by inviting him to play with us, and not leaving our friends).

Only Ron might take offense to that handling, because he's Ron, and he's a git.

And there is no cost to operate under teh assumption that I'm right. The moment that there is in fact a cost, we can drop this plan.

So it's just personal want, not that there is any flaw in the plan itself.

They are richer than us. By a good bit. And it aint' that easy, or else Dumbledore would have completely outmanuverd them already. He's even more famous than we are, and that's before all the money and expertise and connections he has.

Besides the fact we got no idea who to bribe. And generally no experience with politics, like, at all.

We do know the people who do know.

Dumbledore is also utterly ineffective and if read as any sort of serious figure is like a spider who likes moving pawns around his web.

EDIT: Instead of ... you know ... doing anything effective with his political power or his influence or anything else.

Halpo has said that he's going to be playing them as they were meant to be seen as. Dumbledore is the wise, old, and very smart mentor who is completely good (not that he doesn't make mistakes, but does nothing out of evil intent), not to mention very good at politics.
