Chapter 46: Designated Target

Okay that one is interesting and the wording is important, it's yet again another master effect. Defensively it is very useful but we need to more or less sacrifice a creature on it. I can already imagine a few combos, we'll see how it goes.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Flying over the Merchant Territory was depressing, I could see the trainyard below. Apart from one or two lines that still functioned, all the rest were abandoned. With the slow decline of sunlight and the lack of streetlights in the area, it was easy to spot any points of light, particularly with my enhanced visions. I could see at least two dozen of those points of light, I expected a few from homeless people but not that many and I asked Dauntless about it.

"You're right most of those are groups of homeless people, and the rest are probably Merchant gathering but we have no cause to arrest them. Still, patrols such as this one allow us to keep an eye on them. Until now I was the only one able to do it so it's nice to have someone else with me. Eventually, you'll probably do those patrols alone."

I nod at that. It may sound boring when said like that. But the idea of flying for hours alone in silence while admiring the sky sounds really good to me. Eventually, I may gain flying creatures other than Red to add some variety, or even by my own powers, you'll never know with the Menagerie.

In the end, the patrol was uneventful, at some point we heard a big boom and we rushed toward the noise. But we only found a container that collapsed from rust and from the weight of the container above it. We checked but thankfully it wasn't inhabited.

We returned to the Rig shortly thereafter, it was nearing 10 pm and after making my daily report, only one power today, it was time to return home. Before leaving I sent a request for a place to test explosive effects, I was itching to try my celestial brush techniques.

I woke up the next day later than usual, I could hear the sound of rain against my window.
It was Sunday but I would still need to go to work. Working for a law enforcement agency means that my free day would be irregular at best and some weeks even nonexistent.

Just before breakfast Olky proudly shows me his new costume. It was impressive work, particularly in so little time and I assume that magic was involved. He didn't wear a mask or a hat but the rest of the three-piece suit was complete and perfectly sized for him. it was cut a little differently than mine, it reminded me of a butler suit, certainly on purpose. It was an excellent look for him and it would make it easier for him to be seen in public.

Around 10 am I was back in the PRT HQ, knowing that I would stay there the whole day I decided to summon as many creatures as I could. If needed Olky could teleport them later for the meeting with Panacea.

Buoy ends up on the roof happy to dance in the rain. He also uses that opportunity to demonstrate a new move, the ability to project its shadow over a target. That poor pigeon.

And Scalpa opts to guard the entrance of the building with the PRT troopers. He was getting along really well with them, it was nice to see.

Floramon chooses to stay in my office, playing video games on my computer.

The rest of my partners end up either in my office or in a training room. As for myself, I was in a testing room that I was using at the moment because I was trying to understand what the boost to my transformation power did.

It took a little time but with a little help from a few PRT troopers, I managed to gather enough data.

It turns out that my plant's transformation now includes a slow regeneration effect when exposed to sunlight, or for the test, artificial sunlight. It was a slow but noticeable effect and entirely passive. The clockwork healing drone was far faster but this effect complements it really well. Should I expect to go into combat while the sun was out, I would probably use this effect on myself and all my partners.

The second transformation's power proved to be more problematic when I applied it. Anyone looking at me would be fascinated and unable to look away. Yet another master effect, thankfully it wasn't that strong and a little distraction was enough to break it.

Just as I was about to go have lunch another power manifest from the Menagerie.

This one has more information than most./Yes, we need to choose one of our creatures and it makes it a target for our foe./Not just a target, the only target, it's a way to protect ourselves./Master effect again./Not sure I like the idea of using one of our creatures that way, but tactically it is a fantastic tool.

Delaying my lunch I found a PRT agent and explained the situation to her. She agreed to help me and we organized a quick mock spar using boxing gloves. I summoned White to the side of the room and told him to wait there. We start sparring and after a few exchanges, I activate the power on White. Instantly the agent ran toward my hippo and began to punch him, ineffectual. Thankfully she stopped once I declared the spar over.

"Wow, that was freaky. The simple fact of thinking to punch you was impossible. Or no, not impossible, it makes me think that to hurt you the only way was to strike at your hippo. It's a weird effect. In fact, yes it's still there, could you cut it out?"

As it turns out, no I couldn't, once I've chosen one of my partners as a target I couldn't end the effect. Apart from dismissing him, I want to keep him around for Panacea. I asked Olky to teleport him in the garage in the meantime. As soon as he wasn't visible anymore she was again able to punch me.

I thanked her for her help and finally moved to the cafeteria. While eating me and my mind, brainstormed how to best use that effect.

As far as Master effects go, this one is strong but completely harmless./Yes, I really like this one, it only affects those that want to attack us./I already got a few ideas on how to use it./Me too, I'm thinking Jet flying above us with the plants and clockwork transformation./We'll need to gain authorization from Armsmaster to summon Jet./It should be fine we wouldn't use him to attack.

I keep that idea in mind while going to my meeting with Panacea.

Next chapter, Panacea. Not my favorite Worm character but I hope I'll be able to do her justice.

For the roll, 100 points.

[X] Power

100 point creatures really do not offer us anything and this way we either get nothing or clear out more of the powers section to make it more likely we land on the very important 200 point powers. Also designated target is very nice and the Jet with plant theme and clockwork combo will do work.

Chapter 47: Panacea
[X] Power

Power Roll: (100 points)
Roll, D100=38, 300 Exchange Position, Too expansive.
Banked 100 Points
This one could have been nice, would have worked great as a mobility power.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just as I was reaching the corridor where the testing room was, I heard a feminine voice.

"There he is, Sis, come on we gotta say hi!"

Turning toward the voice I spot a beautiful blonde teenager flying toward me and dragging a mousy brunette by her hand. As she came closer I was struck by her beauty, I needed to impress her...

Wow, wow, Casanova, calm down./It's her famous aura./Here I'll take control./Go on we'll restrain this Mind.

With a new mind in charge, I was able to see Glory Girl, for who else it could be, without her aura influencing me. She was without a doubt a beautiful girl, but not drop-dead gorgeous, and most importantly she was taken, out of my league, and also jailbait.

I focus my attention on her sister, the renowned Panacea, while she appears plain next to her sister. In truth, she was pretty cute even if it was marred by her exasperated expression.

"Hello, nice to meet you. It's great to have a new hero in town. I'm Glory Girl and this is my Sister Panacea but you can call us Vicky and Amy. Right, Amy?"

The healer responds with a tired voice. "Yes, but Vicky, calm down." She then addressed me. "It's nice to meet you, Compendium."

"It's a pleasure to meet you both. I'll admit that I was only expecting Panacea."

"I couldn't resist the occasion to meet with a new hero, particularly one as powerful as you. I talked with De...Gallant about you, he was very impressed by your power. Unlimited power growth is extremely rare and as fast as you are unheard of. We even talked about you in my parahuman course Friday, how your power does not fit in any current theory about powers."

I was taken aback by that and didn't know how to respond.

"Stop bothering him Vicky, we didn't come here for that. I want to get started."

Glory Girl responds with a teasing tone. "So impatient Amy dear, you really want to get your hand on Compendium's animals? You want to pet the Giant Tiger thing, don't you?"

"Shut it, I'm just curious, the few projections I've touched in the past didn't register to my power. I want to know if it's the same thing."

"Well, I don't know how your power will react but most of my partners are living creatures and fully sentient, even sapient for some of them."

Amy's only response was. "I will be the judge of that." She turned around, walking toward the testing room.

I shrugged and followed her with Vicky laughing behind me.

Once in the testing room, I was starting to know very well we found two technicians here to witness the test and take notes. Panacea immediately took charge.

"First I want to scan you, Compendium, I know you got a Changer power. I want to see you normally and then after transforming. Give me your hand."

Her forceful personality surprised me coming from a healer but I complied and she grabbed my hand.

As soon as she touched me she froze and began muttering under her breath. "What? How? But that is impossible. I mean yeah sort of but it doesn't fit. And what are those things?"

She remained silent after that and I exchanged a look with Glory girl, who just shrugged.
We wait for a minute. And just as Vicky was about to reach for her sister, Amy looked up at me.

"You shouldn't be alive right now. But somehow you're in perfect health, in fact, you are beyond perfect health."

Not knowing what to say I remain silent.
"To start with, you have so much activity in your head that your brain should be melting and dripping out of your ears. But somehow it works perfectly well." She took a breath "Of course I can't touch the brain but I can see it with my power. In yours there are too many things happening at once, I can't even find your corona gemma."

I opened my mouth to explain about my multiple Minds power but she ignored me and continued.

"If it was just that I would have chalked it up as parahuman weirdness and move on, but no you got other things wrong too. The signals carried by your nerves are too strong too, you should be electrocuting yourself all the time."

I noticed Vicky giving me an impressed look but Panacea was on a roll so she continued on.

"There's also your muscles, I can make heads or tails of them. At first glance, they look normal but in practice, I'm sure that you got more muscle mass than the volume of your body should allow, more than twice as much as normal. And it's the same for your skin, your lungs, everything."

"And finally I can just barely detect an energy source around your heart, I don't know what it is but it's barely a footnote."

She shot with an inquisitive look. "Care to explain?"

I hesitated for an instant, after all, Panacea wasn't entitled to any particular right to my secret. But it cost me nothing to elaborate on my power and those details are already in my daily report, so plenty of people knows already. In addition, being in Panacea good book could only be a good thing.

I proceed to explain about the senses copied from my creatures, my multiple minds, and my strength boost from summoned partners. I didn't say anything about the energy near my heart but I was sure that I was the magic from The Libra or the ink for the Celestial Brush. That part could remain a secret.

We spent a few minutes discussing my power, Glory Girl in particular was fascinated, and Panacea tried to correlate what she could feel with my explanation.

Finally, we managed to get back to work.

"Okay, now I have a baseline, as weird as it is, for you. Now I want to see your plant's transformation effect."

I gave her my hand again and without ceremony transformed.

After a few seconds, she gave me another flat look. "You somehow managed to be even weirder than in your normal state. But for the opposite reasons. I can't detect any difference. My eyes can see that you are now green and made of vines, my finger can clearly feel the wooden texture of your nails, I can even faintly smell a flowery scent. But for my power, nothing changed. Identical to the baseline." A short pause. "Except for one detail, your skin is somehow performing photosynthesis. I have no clue how."

An exasperated sign followed that declaration.

After I explained that I possess a second transformation power, and after warning them about the fascination effect. We test it in the same way with the same result. Panacea's power didn't allow her to perceive any difference when I transformed.

Glory girl insisted that she could resist the effect of my night sky transformation, so I let her try a few times. She didn't manage to completely resist it but she managed to break the effect in just a few seconds.

The tests on me, being concluded, we turned back our attention to the main events, my partners.

This chapter got a little away from me. I want to reach creature testing but Panacea was really interested in our hero's body.

For the roll, 300 points because we have enough excess words.

[X] One Power roll with 200 points and a second Power roll with any leftover plus 100 point

We have 3 200 point powers we are aiming for, this gives us 2 chances to grab one of those.

Also yeah makes sense that some of the changes are making things seem really odd (like the whole extra mind per summon or extra strength per summon). Just imagine if we had gorumet cells.

With a new mind in charge,
That's actually quite a helpful detail. Not all master effects may work because they only get one person. Someone like Alec might get away if it because he's going for the nervous system as opposed of the mind, or Canary as the medium of sound could affect multiple people I.e. multiple minds.

detect an energy source around your heart,
No need for biopsy friends. Our corona gemma is just in a different location then the brain. Hehe….<Nervous Laughter>
No lie, the muscle thing is kind of weird. The only ability that I could think of which can cause this is the Rider. But the Rider isn't something like Beastmaster or Hunter, so gaining double the muscles doesn't work as a logical chain of progression.
But for my power, nothing changed. Identical to the baseline
You know, I thought our animal cells would have been replaced with plant cell analogs; not remained the same.
Panacea was really interested in our hero's body.
Oh no! Panacea don't do it! The FBI will either get you for crimes against nature or get Alex in trouble.

how your power does not fit in any current theory about powers.
Man, from a different POV, if people knew about the Feudalism experiment, than it's not that he doesn't fit, it's that there's an active force pushing for certain conditions. Conditions which are unlike anything in the States, and everyone should evacuate so they don't fall prey to this experiment.

Fairly sure this is from the power where we get a physical boost for each summon we have out- Strength of Many: You gain a 10% increase in strength and endurance for each creature currently summoned.

[X] One Power roll with 300 points

There are some really nice powers out there that could be really useful, no matter what creatures you draw.

"Well, I don't know how your power will react but most of my partners are living creatures and fully sapient, even sentient for some of them."
Other way around, Sentience is the ability to perceive and feel, most, if not all, animals and living creatures are Sentient. Sapience is the ability to reason and think, Humans are the only creatures In Real Life that we know to be fully Sapient, with a few animals being tested and finding signs but no clear evidence of the same.

Floramon is Sentient and fully Sapient.

Red is Sentient and maybe a little sapient

Spiderbot could be argued to be sentient, in the sense it can see, and thus perceive but would otherwise be considered neither.

Damn I was sure it was the opposite and didn't check. But I just did and you're right. Thanks.
