[X] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.
[X] This demonette cut my hellgun in half, then followed up on my arm!

In the grim darkness of the future, the wonders of prosthetics mean that you can lose an arm more than once, or in multiple installments. :V

[X] It's the truth.

Praxis seems comfortable enough, both with Marvel in general and her arm in particular, that the idea of her lying honestly strikes me as a little weird? Like, she might not want to talk about it, but it doesn't feel like she would lie to Marvel's face. A little self-consciousness isn't enough to make up a weird story.

Then again, there's a tonal difference between 'lie' and 'random shit you say to flirt', too. But Praxis's feelings about her arm seem too serious to do any random flirting over, if that makes sense.

I want her to believe it's a joke at first.
Then have her told that no, it really was a fucking door.

Because that was, IMO, foreshadowed.

Well yeah, except that with enough traumatization a significant fraction of people eventually start curling up and going catatonic, even under threat. Or the combination of their trauma and being keyed up on adrenaline causes them to do something that is, essentially, suicidal recklessness.
Not a psychologist, but to my knowledge that can be mitigated with training, as the nice Space Marine just told us, they train to make it so that if they DO pass their limits they go full aggression assault rather than shut down, which while poor for individual survival does wonders for squad survival.

Which sounds a lot like just ramping up the adrenaline past the safe limits because the terror is past the safe limits.
It'd be an immensely bad idea for a civilian to be sure, but Space marines are never truly off duty(the state of the Imperium being such that when they aren't fighting they're either training or resting off fighting/training), so the downside of potentially beating someone to death because they got triggered when someone cut them off in traffic is suppressed.

So...its not ideal but its managed and functional.

true... but then again, this might be one of the reasons her relationships keep failing. it would be very in character for our expertly social inquisitor, who lies with ease for her job, to be self conscious and instinctively reach for a falsehood...

Since the vote is well in hand, and what I like is winning, I'm going to raise a mechanical concern. What are some people's wish lists for future mechanical progress? Obviously there's some degree to which anything is going to be a matter of spending for skills you need for an individual situation...

But there is some planning can be done. Like, People: Marvel Ann, good idea or not? We could be saving to increase Contacts or Presence to 4, or Charm to 5... which is the highest Praxis can go in terms of a stat, five, which means that it'd be really impressive... but would mean that her other two social stats are 'merely' pretty good.

And other such questions.

ooh, no, that makes a lot of sense too.

I honestly like the door crushing, or at least the idea of the door crushing I've got in my head, from a thematic perspective? see previous discussion, but like. it's the kind of thing I could see her lying to cover up. The Imperium is the kind of place where you would boast about how you lost your arm fighting the daemonette, or had it cut off so you could infiltrate. Both in and out of universe, you would normally revel in the Glorious Violence and/or Being A Hard Woman Making Hard Decisions. Especially now, when she just committed an act that very much runs counter to the aforementioned Hard Men Making Hard Decisions propaganda, I could see her being ashamed that she lost her arm in such a mundane manner.

so if it's winning, I want it to be the truth. and her arm being lost in a simple industrial accident, a drunken escapade at inquisitor school, a failure of basic OSHA compliance, it all fits so well with the themes here. the Imperium's biggest enemy is itself. the biggest losses are not Glorious Combat or Hard Decisions Made While Hard but simple, everyday tragedies.

Plus you could say something about the metaphorical machinery of the Imperium destroying your humanity piece by piece, but Marvel Ann might object to that and this isn't my day job, okay?

Happy page 100 everyone.
[x] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.

Marvel-Ann content is all I need, I would soak it into my pores if I could. Maybe we should commission a new arm from her at some point, we already lean very hard into the "elegant" side of the view of inquisitors, a shiny chrome arm with whatever gadgets our girlfriend can stuff inside would be a great addition to that image.

...you don't know how many NSFW ideas that just gave me. :V

We're a bit drunk, we're on a bit of a high, we're probably feeling a little concerned at getting a magos sloshed to the point she hasn't noticed she just half-stripped in front of us and probably couldn't walk coherently without gyroscopes. I could see the truth happening in a moment of weakness, and don't want this conversation to become a tragedy.

Oh, hey, just checking, has anyone mentioned Hope and Silence in the Hive? It seems like a relevant recommendation for a story with vaguely similar themes percolating.

Another thing. The genestealers have this amazing gene-modifying technology. They just shank someone and then their whole genetic make-up goes all tyranid without making any overt changes. Could a Magos use the same thing, hammer it a bit, then inject it again to randomise the changes. So, like, instead of turning people into genestealers it'd turn them into benstillers or some other completely random gene-salad that would, presumably, not be contageous, or at least not have an open channel to Tyranis Radio? Could they try refining this to give people genetic compatibility with The T-Virus The Space Marine Process?

Make an excuse of it actually being a fairly substantial door.

Was leaning towards the infiltration but this does strike me as more on theme.

You really should. When you were younger you had a carbine hell-gun for close in work, but a cultist of Slaanesh had scythed it clean in half with a power claw and you'd never gotten around to replace it. Admittedly, losing your arm not long after had somewhat soured you on front-line work, but it was really time to get over yourself.

Okay, so this is what I remembered, and Open_Sketch pulled a clever thing. I read it as 'I lost my main weapon, and then my arm that was holding it, and the arm I was more concerned about replacing', but it could be read as 'I lost my weapon, and then later that week I lost my arm in a tragic extreme skiing accident' as well.

And since I want to roleplay praxis being bad at romantic relationships like our backstory says, I'll go against the grain and...

[X] This demonette cut my hellgun in half, then followed up on my arm!
[X] It's a lie.

I do agree the 'Caught it in a door' is a great actual-truth story, but telling the truth to someone we're actively manipulating and trying to bread-pill just seems off-brand

You're more likely going to lie when tired or drunk, especially if it's a lie that you always say to that question to everyone. Your mouth and habits run on autopilot, and you don't want people of different levels of trusted/flirtiness to mention it off hand and realize someone was told a lie and someone was the truth. Better to just keep it simple in that case.

And it's just a lie about an arm. You're making sure Marval Ann doesn't accidentally trip over all your professional lies with personal truths that she may not parse the difference of. It's not like it's a professional habit intruding into personal life, Praxis would never do that often enough to become frustrating to someone she's dating.

I'm somewhere on the ace spectrum, so I might not be qualified to say this, but they're in Praxis's room with a bottle of wine. I'm pretty sure the stripping was on purpose.

[X] It's the truth.
There are two ways this could go. An incredibly, hilariously dumb accident, or losing it in an emergency where the bulkhead doors slammed down and Praxis didn't entirely make it. I want to see which way it goes.

[X] A fellow Inquisitor took it off with a chainsword. I'll get her back one day.
[X] It's the truth.

As funny as the door option is, I like the idea of sitting up an "Oh that bitch," sort of dynamic with a rival Inquisitor.

And technically all the options could've happened, as Praxis could've lost the same arm multiple times and just kept replacing it. Frankly I find that to be an even funnier bit.

*at some prosthetics facility somewhere*

"Hey, Steve, we have another order from Ordo Hereticus. It's for a lady named, uh, Joanyn Praxis? It's a size-"

"Oh, Praxis? Another arm replacement, size 12?"

"Y-yeah, how did you know?"

"She comes by every six months with some ridiculous story about how she lost her arm this time. 'oh it was a daemonette', 'oh it was a rogue inquistor', 'oh my sleeve got stuck in a trash compactor'. We have her order saved as a template. It's just so much faster."

[X] It's the truth.

"Caught in a door" is unquestionably the funniest option, but this one suggests that she's been butting heads with her colleagues for a significant portion of her career, and I think that fits with her character. Plus, it enables the plot hook of running into the culprit somewhere down the road.
