But that won't work, that's fascist thinking! That's literally fascist thinking!

"Because we are In The Right and have the power of Fanaticism (or hope in our case, whatever) we can triumph over the enemy no matter the tactical odds!"

We can still win, said the Nazis in 1943, von Manstein's attack at the Kursk Salient will cut off the Russian hordes and then we'll destroy them and turn around and win this war!

Spoiler: von Manstein's attack did not cut off the Red Army. The war was not won.

The strategic reality of the situation is just too buggered.
Just because the fascists were overtly optimistic, doesn't mean that all optimism is fascism.

The delusions of the Nazi regime (not just in 1943, but also at any point from 1923 to 1945) do not lie in the fact that they had Hope, they found their origin deeper in their own ideology, specifically, in the way that the Nazis concieved of their enemies.

To quote Umberto Eco :

8. The followers must feel humiliated by the ostentatious wealth and force of their enemies. When I was a boy I was taught to think of Englishmen as the five-meal people. They ate more frequently than the poor but sober Italians. Jews are rich and help each other through a secret web of mutual assistance. However, the followers must be convinced that they can overwhelm the enemies. Thus, by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus, the enemies are at the same time too strong and too weak. Fascist governments are condemned to lose wars because they are constitutionally incapable of objectively evaluating the force of the enemy.

Except the enemies are their own worst enemies? Chaos inevitably winds up betraying itself and going through the same failings as we do. If the Imperium collapses, how much of that space will Chaos forces take until they fall into civil war or etc?

The truth is that basically none of the other alternatives except perhaps the Tau are not prone to some of the same failings as well are. Something can be salvaged, which isn't the same as saying, "Not a single planet of the Imperium will fall when it does" or anything like that.
I'll take "what are Tyranids, Orks, and Necrons" for $200, Alex.
Hope is not fascism, for goodness' sake.

The idea that we keep going and keep trying even when there's only a little hope, because the alternative is despair? That's not fascist. To continue to strive in the faint hope that maybe utter destruction can be avoided or mitigated or delayed, that change is possible? Is not fascist thinking.

I'm actually genuinely baffled by this, like. Hoping against hope in a situation that seems hopeless isn't bad just because the nazis have done it. Lots of people have done it.
Okay but even if we ignore the unfortunate parallels the fact remains that the situation is still now wildly out of control.

Which, I mean, isn't that bad a thing from a story telling perspective? You can have all sorts of fun times exploring the last days of a fascist society, and how its internal contradictions, inefficiencies, and failures become ever more obvious and exaggerated as its own flaws break it down only somewhat slower than the enemies at the gate, unfortunately not liberators in the Imperium's case but oh well. Additionally, unless we have some massive timeskips then the Imperium's final end, and humanity's shortly afterwards, is almost certainly going to be a fair bit after the end of the Quest, whenever that is. I trust OS to know what they're doing, believe me.
Just because the fascists were overtly optimistic, doesn't mean that all optimism is fascism.
Yeah but there's optimism and there's "the Endsieg is around the corner if we fight harder guys, trust me on this one."

Paris Commune, Revolutionary Catalonia, the Jacobite rising(s), Taborites, et cetera. Any number of causes have had optimism far outweighing their actual martial strength. Most of them came to sticky ends, but they weren't the goddamn nazis. Its a ridiculous comparison to draw, frankly. Optimism and hope remain not fascist. Claiming they are fascist is just... incredibly weird to me.

Are the Necrons particularly competent? The Orks certainly aren't. Dangerous, sure, but so's the Imperium. You don't have to have it all together to be a threat when you're powerful enough. You can just stumble around and crush people.

The Tyranids, I guess, maybe?
I'll grant you that the Necrons are probably less dangerous than the other two if only because they're divided and not as inimical to human life, but you do get dynasties like the Maynarkh who are on an unstoppable march of extinction so that's not ideal.

The Orks aren't competent while they're divided and weak, but when they get together their competence grows, almost exponentially. Ignoring stuff like the WotK and Ullanor during the GC or anything else like, the Wars of Armageddon prove that quite conclusively. And Orks are on the resurgence as the Imperium enters the terminal decline stage of the fascist state: Ghazghkull, yes, but also Bosses like Garaghak who even know threatens, among others, the homeworld of the Raven Guard.

I admit I probably wouldn't have drawn the comparison if we weren't talking about something related to the Imperium, which is fascist even if your examples aren't. Still, I suppose you have a point.

But you also have a point in the sense that they didn't really fair any better than the fascists when they faced impossible odds, no.

the death of the imperium
Alright, I'mma step in.

The Imperium is terrible top to bottom because, fundamentally, it is and always was an authoritarian, dictatorial empire that championed ignorance, hate, and absolutism. Its shape changed over time, its material conditions worsened, but there was never, ever a time when it was a good idea.

The Emperor was wrong, and was always wrong.

But further, a theme of this quest is that the Imperium, for all its eternal state of emergency and constant need to step on its own dick, is actually really bad at the eternal war. It uses its resources poorly, fosters constant unrest in its own population, blinds itself from important information, cuts itself off from potential allies, and systematically shuts down good decisions. The ignorance of the populace, meant to make them easy to control, means they have no real protection against the manipulation and corruption of their enemies. They produce so much and waste all of it, not just on the endless wars but also on filling vaults with weaponry that will be used against them, enriching their ruling classes, funding their corrupt church, and suppressing the dissent created by the non-stop worsening conditions. They have only lasted as long as they have because they are big enough that there are always new places to source bullies from to keep the rest in line, but they're running out.

The Imperium can and does win victories even now, they can still do incredible things, they are still the dominant power in the galaxy, and they are losing not because of the threats from without but because of their own self-destructing ideology, one that is, at the highest level, fundamentally incapable of the basic observation that what they are doing is not working.

But even if none of that were true... it is still worthy to fight for a better world, even against the odds. It always is. Even if it only lasts a few years, even if its only for a few people before it burns out, improving the lot of the people around you, soothing hurt and giving hope, that is its own reward.

The Imperium doesn't believe that, and that is why it is dying.

Always figured the Imperium formed as it did because the whole thing is driven by a charismatic superman, whose solution to not being everywhere was to create twenty more charismatic supermen.
And then because everything turns on these singular supermen, removing them is like taking out the core structural supports of a building, its still standing, but its just not designed to stay so for long without the spine.

The rest is just running around improvising and hoping it keeps standing another day

Yeah the argument "the Imperium is only because because the Emperor is mostly dead!" is a little like saying "Monarchy is only bad because succession!"

The Imperium is, in many ways, a slowly crumbling monument to the Emperor's ego.

But even if none of that were true... it is still worthy to fight for a better world, even against the odds. It always is. Even if it only lasts a few years, even if its only for a few people before it burns out, improving the lot of the people around you, soothing hurt and giving hope, that is its own reward.
Honestly, I think I might know what the problem is. I just don't get it. Intellectually, from a utilitarian perspective, I buy that it's best to try and improve things for other people where you can because that objectively is just a good thing, but I just do not emotionally understand why you'd fight when you are literally for sure doomed. People keep telling me "even if you fail in the end, what you did during your life still mattered" and "it's always worth it to fight for a better world if you can" and "hoping against seeming hopelessness is actually human and good", and really I do intellectually buy it but I just do not emotionally understand.

I'm sorry that I caused such a ruckus over being an empathy-less worthless bastard, alright?

Anyway, moving on.

There is a quote from the esteemed Carl Sagan in my signature which I feel applies to this quest in particular and perhaps even to humanity in general in the universe of WH40K.

"For small creatures such as we, the vastness is bearable only through love."

This doesn't just mean, imho, loving in the sense that you love your family or your significant other(s). It means solidarity and support. Building each other up rather than tearing each other down. It is doing what you can to make things better for others even in small ways.

Unfortunately the Imperium itself does not love. As an institution, it hates. It hates the outsider, the alien, the mutant, those who believe differently, the new, the strange, and so many others.

"Only the unloved hate. The unloved and the unnatural." - Charlie Chaplain.

its all about scope

if you were tasked with a suicidal mission, your goal instead of survival would be maximizing the amount of goals you can acomplish before you die

well, this analogy can apply to everything, because in a sense everything is doomed to oblivion, what matters is how good we do in that interlude between non-existing and eternal oblivion

every single human you know is bound to die someday, does that stop you from being kind to those you love?
if the end result is unavoidable, migh as well try to make the procces as plesant as possible

'Necessity overcomes morality,' Kaeria's hands signed in the air before her breastplate. 'Never without regret. Never without shame. Yet even immoral victory must outweigh moral defeat. The victor will have a chance to atone if conscience demands. The vanquished lose any such opportunity.'

morality should be kept as much as possible, key word ''as possible''

Again, I said I got it intellectually. That's... just more intellectual points, you're literally preaching to the choir.

5-2: Final Approach
Less than an hour later, you were aboard one of the three Nighthawks blasting across the sky toward the distant Sea Skimmer, watching the clouds roll by through the cockpit windows. It was a perfect, beautiful day, the blue just seemed to go on forever, completely at odds with what was coming.

It was too nice a day for the world to end.

In the passenger hold, packed in like sardines, were you, Charitina in her clanking half-plate, and four Voidsmen. Well, three Voidsmen and one Voidswoman, you supposed, though the name didn't seem to take that into account. They were from the Sword-class Frigate Fires of Absolution, which was docked in orbit to take on food and let their officers walk around on a planet for a change, and these Voidsmen were part of a unit that were allowed leave on the world owing to their conduct in a recent boarding action. They'd encountered an Ork vessel of some variety, probably lost from the Armageddon fleet, and even though their guns had gutted its engineering sections it had still made it to boarding range, reeling itself for the last three hundred kilometers on a massive harpoon cable and then punching a hole in the ship with a boarding needle. These Voidsmen had rallied at the entrance point, scythed down the Orks with heavy weaponry, and then taken up boarding axes and pikes, shotguns and flamers, and crossed into the enemy ship. They'd not just beaten it, they'd seized the vessel, taking the bridge, venting the lower decks, and then burning their way through room by room, comprehensive revenge for the cargo ships and missionary vessels destroyed by the rogue Ork vessel.

Their victory had been so complete that their captain had judged it safe to tow the remains of the Ork ship to the shipbreakers at Voss Prime, to be cut apart for scrap and stolen Imperial artifacts, and the Voidsmen were commended hansomely by their beloved Captain. Sitting on a wealth of prize money, they'd been given two weeks leave on the world, and had been taking full advantage when there was a sudden need for their services. These sixteen had been the first to volunteer, and had come straight from the bars and brothels where they'd been spending their pay, still dressed not in their uniforms but in colourful printed clothes they'd purchased on-world, though they were wearing their bulky flak armour, with its steel covering, overtop it, their helmets and stacked-barrel boarding shotguns on their laps and massive, wicked boarding axes close at hand.

You'd already briefed them, so there was little for it but to sit and wait. You found yourself studying the man sitting across from you, a board, heavily muscled type, a little sunburnt on his face, covered head to toe in tattoos ranging from devotional to aggressive to downright crude. His axe was, you realized now, a multi-use tool of sorts. It's handle ended in a prybar curve, and its half-serated axehead was designed so it could hook onto things, probably to pull the user around in zero g. On the reverse side was a flat striking area, like a sledgehammer, and topping it was another pry surface, this one straight. The whole thing was connected by a chain to the user's waist, so they could never lose it in zero gravity, and would afix to a magnetic pad on the Voidsman's back.

"You like it, ma'am?" the man asked, throwing you out of your introspection, "Were me dad's. Gotten me out of a few tough spots."

"Looks like." you admitted, staring at the notched blade and worn steel. "Bit heavy, though, isn't it?"

"Barely feel it on most ships. Little awkward down here, but that's why I got this." He patted the boarding shotguns affectionately. "Ain't nothing getting back up after it gets both barrels. 'Least, nothing I wanna fight."

He had you there.

"You packin', ma'am?"

"Just my pistol. And this." You indicated to your dress knife, and he shook his head sadly. "I know, it's not a real knife, it's for appearances more than anything."

"Not all of us are fighters, ma'am, but beggin' your pardon..."

It took you a moment to realize he was actually begging your pardon, and you nodded.

"... you should get yourself a real weapon for times like this. Little laspistol ain't gonna cut it."

You really should. When you were younger you had a carbine hell-gun for close in work, but a cultist of Slaanesh had scythed it clean in half with a power claw and you'd never gotten around to replace it. Admittedly, losing your arm not long after had somewhat soured you on front-line work, but it was really time to get over yourself.

"I probably should have thought of that before getting on the Nighthawk, huh." you joked, and the Voidsman gestured toward his commander, Voidmaster Lominack, who wordlessly offered you his autoshotgun.

"Oh, no, please. You'll put it to better use than I." you protested, "Besides, that's why I have this one."

You patted the paldron of Charitina's armour affectionately, and she grinned in return.

"That's right. I'm basically just a walking barricade for the Inquisitor to hide behind." she boasted, to the laughter of the crew.

---

As you made the final approach, you grabbed the vox-set from the wall and broadcast a final reminder to the voidsmen.

"Alright, remember. The goal here is to do this as fast as possible. All other elements are secondary. They'll probably try to detonate the moment they realize something is wrong, but hopefully our man on the inside can keep them delayed. While I would prefer prisoners over not, and I'd prefer you all came home alive over not, our absolute priority has to be to neutralize every one of them with the utmost speed. And... do try not to shoot Mr. Greven."

There was a chorus of 'aye-aye!' from the Voidsmen here, and it was probably echoed on the other Nighthawks. Out the front window, you could see the little white and green Sea Skimmer blazing over the waves, getting closer with each second. This was it.

[X] Praxis waits.

Like the man said, we are almost comically under equipped for door kicking, we should at least wait for the nice marines in what I assume are basically Hawaiian shirts to clear the top deck before we even think of getting out of the VTOL.

[X] Praxis joins the fight.
We were the only ones to realize the possible threat of the virusbomb in the first place, things are gonna move fast down there and I don't wanna endanger the whole planet because some voidsmen or Tina can't figure out what to do with the virusbomb. Just seems like as much as it'll be dangerous, our expertise is probably gonna be needed immediately past the first 20 seconds.

[X] Praxis waits.

Roll me...
- 16 d10 for Voidsmen.
- 1d10 for Charitina.

The enemy got 3 successes, so you have a +5 bonus.

No exploding dice.

You mean 16 1d10+3+3+5s, rihgt? And does Charitina get bonuses, too?

Admittedly, the first two rounds for the Voidsmen will be about not rolling a 1, because any roll other than that is a success/hit.

Yes, the total bonus for your Voidsmen is +11!

Charitina is rolling at the same bonus, but obviously anyone she hits with her bolt carbine is staying down, and her armour will help a lot.

This has given me a lot of useful information btw.
