I meant we need to adhere to it. We the playerbase.

I mean yes the people in universe can question it if they went but unlike us they're not at risk of doing a 180 turn into Imperium apologia and thus a huge mistake with each vote. Me personally, I don't really go into that independent thought thing for that reason, I trust and obey. That way things can't be screwed over by us being too space fascist.

Huh, okay, that makes more sense, thanks for clarifying! We should trust Praxis? Yeah, now I get it.

Exactly. And by trust Praxis I mean trust in her literal listed Values as a representation of the path the QM has set out for us. Not to the point of obvious suicide or anything, but as we've seen in all three of the arcs so far going with her gut and using Words Words Words always leads to a close to optimal result, although of course we mostly can't actually know what alternative outcomes we might have gotten.

We picked 2 of those values, actually.

6-5: A Work of Art
There really wasn't much to your room, just a metal writing surface, a simple bed in a solid frame, and a bench against the wall (with no cushions, of course). Spartan was the watchword, at least here. So absent of any other surface, you and Marvel Ann sat down on the bed, pulled the chair over to serve as an improvised table, and promptly ran into not having any glasses.

"Straight from the bottle, then." you said, pulling the cork free with metal fingers and offering it to your guest. You were, of course, a polite host.

Marvel Ann tipped it back gently, winced and coughed a bit, and handed it over. You were certain if they could, her eyes would be watering.

"That is s t r o n g. Wow."

"Yeah, little bit. I think I've grown desensitized over the years." you admitted.

"We don't exactly do a lot of drinking, As A Culture. There is an idea that it is a corruption of the flesh, you know? Of course, some of us still do. Our thralls make some pretty good beer."

"So what do your teetotaling pals do for fun instead?" you asked.

"Well, Most Recently, some of my peers were using special implants to reduce dopamine levels to their brain, and then flood it all at once when they relax. This is, of course, idiotic, because they are reducing a vital neurotransmitter. But apparently, when it comes to this, I know nothing, biology is sham science, my anecdotal evidence is infallible, etc etc. Of course, Who Do They Turn To when they get an infection?" she said, grabbing the bottle and knocking back quite a bit more than before.

"Whoa, slow down there girl."

"Sorry, it's easy to get frustrated just talking about it. There's A Certain... I dunno, arrogance, I suppose, that is just No Fun to deal with. They get strange ideas in their heads and nothing can convince them otherwise, because They Know The Secrets Of The Universe, dontcha know."

"Yeah, that's most of the Imperium's institutions, honestly." you admitted, "Especially Inquisitors. Every one of them thinks they know best and won't accept any argument otherwise."

"E x c e p t y o u, of course." she teased. Wow, you walked into that one. "Though personally, the more I hear, the more I think You Have A Point."

You'd been onboarding Marvel Ann on the details of your personal philosophy, and while she was skeptical of some aspects she was pretty receptive. You had a feeling at least part of it was just because you were saying it: you could tell she was a little smitten.

"Do you have any hope for our infected passengers?" you asked, and she made a show of pondering while she took another sip.

"W e l l, that depends a lot on what you mean by hope. For them to survive, sure. I have some procedures I need to do, though... I suspect both females are pregnant, which... that will need to be taken care of. Urgh. And obviously we will need to isolate them, but they don't seem to Pose A Thread."

"Yeah. That's sort of what I figured, right? I guess I realized that it didn't have to be that complicated, that there was no reason anyone needed to get hurt." you said. Ultimately, saving them had been simple, and the reasoning that had come to mind at first as to why you couldn't seemed so... convoluted. Detached from the reality that in those moments, you just needed to try and help.

"I'll admit, I was... Well, I Was Ready to do something else, but once you explained it to me, it felt so obvious." she admitted, "That Said... curing them? Not A Chance, viruses are not exactly my specialty. But it might be a start to a vaccine or something like that."

"Right, you're a botanist mostly, right?" you said. Wow, more of the bottle was gone than you were planning. You should slow down a little.

"That's my passion, but in practical terms my specialty is Neural Interfacing And Organic Modification. The basics are widely studied in the Mechanicus, so it was fairly easy to start researching. And... I did some my own experiments."

"Oh?" you placed the bottle on the chair and slid it a ways away.

"As I Mentioned, I've done most of my own work. Um, in part because I didn't exactly trust my peers not to make decisions on my behalf while I was sedated. I'm really trying not to end up a formless mass of metal, you know?"

"You've certainly done a good job so far." you said. It was so easy to make her blush!

"Nice. Glad there is Somebody who appreciates The Aesthetic. " she said, then, rather without warning, she stood up (a bit unsteadily) and pulled off her robes, leaving her in just her loose parchment-white tunic, all the metal on display as she posed clumsily. She was already laughing a bit from embarrassment. "A Work Of Art, r i g h t?"

Her arms and shoulders were all shiny steel, as were her legs to mid-thigh, but she'd put a lot of effort into sourcing parts to ensure they were symmetrical, and then she'd polished it all to a chrome finish. It was still distinctly mechanical, and not entirely human in shape, but it certainly wasn't the indistinct and near-random assortment of bionic doodads that had a tendency to build up on most Magos you'd seen.

"Definitely. You'll be the first person I call if I lose another limb." you assured her.

She laughed a bit at that, clearly a bit out of it, and then sat back down beside you, leaning against you, her metal fingers intertwined with yours. You felt a bit self-conscious all of a sudden, the dull boltgun metal of your bionics against the mithril silver of hers.

"How'd That Happen, anyway?" she asked.

I lied about starting the new arc I wanted to write more Marvel Ann.
Also, an observation: there are plenty of examples of bionics in 40k that are not the messy affairs of tubes, wires, and heavy steel we often see. A quick look at Iron Hand Straken will confirm the Imperium is perfectly capable of making bionics with a fairly human appearance. I submit that the reason they often don't is one part cheapness, one part performative humility, and one part because conspicuous bionics get respect in the great Imperial game of Gothic cosplay. Among the Mechanicus, there's also that element of wanting to reject the human form and all that, a pressure that a respect for the biological would probably lessen.

[x] It's a lie.

I'm voting this for the comedic value. Not sure, if it (somehow) wins, I want her to be lying or not. I'm going with lying for plot reasons.

We tell everyone it was a cool duel with a daemonette but actually I was just not very careful disembarking from the personnel shuttle after having a little bit too much to drink at Inquisitor School.

My impression (And the one I use in my own headcanon) is that the Adeptus Mechanicus could very easily arrange matters to set up someone just as heavily augmented as a Magos but virtually indistinguishable from an ordinary human.

This is even backed by some of the content in the Fantasy Flight Games line, which has the Factor of the Lathes as being the Calixis Mechanicus' emissaries and envoys to the greater body of humanity, who code as no more bionically enhanced than any highbrow Imperial nobleman.

The problem is that for an average initiate, the fastest way to show your fealty is to become as augmented as you can, as fast as you can, it shows your dedication to the faith--and for such initiates, they don't have the resources to get the good stuff, and they rationalize all of this however they feel like it and that makes it easy for them down the line to settle for half-assed jumbles of random metal.

But if you're talented, or have good connections, or are just patient and willing to accept a slow rate of promotion due to not showing sufficient zeal, you can get by otherwise. Heck, I've actually got an OC Explorator for the Rogue Trader line who's a tiny thing who just plugs herself into a hulking seven foot tall encounter suit because she's sickly and wouldn't survive the surgery involved for more invasive replacements. Hardly anyone knows she isn't just a hulking super robit because of this.

[x] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.

how can I not vote for the funny option

[X] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.
Personally, while just going full comedic injury here would still be good, I kinda want to see this be turned around and some how made even more badass then the other options

[x] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.

Oh man, can it be that? We publicly pretend it was the demon/hellgun? That's perfect.

to be fair, it was probably a massive airlock/bunker door or something.

but still.

a door.

Because that was, IMO, foreshadowed.

Didn't need to. Evolution provided humans with a set of useful tools to deal with trauma on the level of "no longer able to function while still under threat".
Adrenaline and shock responses keep you going until its no longer an active 'hot' threat.
Well yeah, except that with enough traumatization a significant fraction of people eventually start curling up and going catatonic, even under threat. Or the combination of their trauma and being keyed up on adrenaline causes them to do something that is, essentially, suicidal recklessness.

[X] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.

This fits too well, considering the feel of the story.
After all, there are plenty of 'work accidents' that happen in hectic and stressful situations. Not all of them are glamurous and awesome, like we see in fiction/propaganda pieces.

And regardless if it wins or not, I am going to headcannon it as true, and other stories as lies to make her look cool. Image makes the inquisitor, after all. Can't let your girlfriends down with something so lame.

I kind of want to vote for the meme option but cannot in good faith do so.

Another day, another reason to wish for apocalypse now.

Not gonna get it mind you, but we can still wish for it...

[X] I got it caught in a door. Don't tell anyone.

This is perfect. Not from a comedic perspective, because there's actually nothing particularly funny about that type of gruesome accident, but from a story themes perspective. The performative nature of so much of Imperial society, and how at the end of the day it was probably over the top engineering and architecture combined with little reguard for usability and safety features that proved the most dangerous, not any kind of external threat. It's absolutely completely appropriate.

Are we voting for what actually happened, or what we tell this cute magos lady as a flirt? I thought how we lost the arm was already in the story
