Someone correct me, but didn't Star Platinum show hints of time stop even before the Dio confrontation?
Arguable, based on how he gathered items during his match with D'Arby, who IIRC said movements that fast shouldn't be possible even for Star Platinum.
Star Platinum's powers are kind of poorly defined in general. It can do a LOT of stuff, even stuff that it has never seen before. Like, its incredible precision is a thing for the entire series, as shown when Jotaro catches that bullet in the opening scenes of Stardust Crusaders. It has ridiculous vision, which nobody else Jotaro comes into contact with really has. It can duplicate The World's abilities, because they're apparently the same 'type' of Stand. (I have no idea what Araki means by this, because The World is obviously Dio's stand, not Jonathan's. so it's not just a matter of a blood-connection)
They're the same type of Stand in that they're close range brawlers, which we see with other Stands like Judgement or Crazy Diamond. It just turns out that they're "the same type" to a closer degree than they could have predicted, both being able to stop time.

Honestly, the whole 'same type' deal could have been fixed. Araki already had the tools to set up an actual twist.

First the mystery: Have DIO demonstrate the power of three stands. One being Hermit Purple, the other being a new vine one that would probably be Holly's if she had the spirit to control it. The third being The World with the power to stop time.

The Solution: DIO's Stand allows him to copy and use the currently existing Stands of the Joestar bloodline. We could even have DIO musing if he even should kill them if he could continue to gain additional power from them, but he ultimately sides with his bloodlust for Joestar Blood.

This raises the additional mystery, why can he Stop Time then? DIO would believe this power would have belonged to Jonathan Joestar. Jotaro wouldn't quite buy that, though, since Jonathan was clearly deceased long before DIO ever gained that Stand and so he can in a credible way realize his own stand may be the source of DIO's Time Stop power.

Oh well.

Well, that's what fanwork is for!

(It'd be cool if that was the case here, but Unit-01 is free to do what he pleases, of course)

This would also give a credible reason for why DIO would ever have kids. He would probably think (rightly so) that his current body can propagate the Joestar Bloodline, and therefore he would gain new Stand Powers.

...DIO with Gold Experience Requiem. My god.

My headcanon/understanding has always been that The World's power is to copy the abilities of its wielder's descendants. Given that in all statistical probability DIO was stabbed with the arrow somewhere on Jonathan's body, this would make it Jonathan's stand (which, along with his body, is being hijacked by DIO).

Y'know the rest makes perfect sense, and is in fact my own headcanon, but this bit strikes me as off.

Aside the fact that stands are psychic phenomena and DIO is the only one in condition to do anything psychic, regardless of body-snatching, The World is much more thematically linked to Dio than it is Jonathan, IMO.
(Also there's the whole thing with Alternate Diego (aka Alternate Alternate Dio) having The World.)

I do remember that in the Eyes of Heaven bit they ran along with the "DIO and Jotaro Stands are the same type", allowing for Jotaro to copy the effects of The World Over Heaven like he copied the time stop ability. It's how he managed to survive DIO's direct attack (he healed himself) or how he managed to destroy Over Heaven.

Technically it makes NO SENSE, but it's still in line with Araki lore.

Eva is very skeptical of the "Jotaro is actually the one that copies" theory from what I understand.

I'm not going to judge if you want to go that route, on the other hand I really hate when people think a certain interpretation of someone on the internet is the 'correct' one when the source is ambiguous, or when official to semi-official sources contradict them and they just dismiss it as being 'wrong'.

Specially because certain people starts to throw around massive amounts of salt if someone dares to contradict them.

I don't care, really. Stand-shmand, DIO-shmio, give me Jonathan's "your next line will be" and some Mizore shenanigans, and I'll be content. People will always think that they are right, and/or somebody else is wrong. It won't stop me from enjoying a well-written story.

Yes I am really looking forward to more Mizore.
Hopefully there'll be cute interactions there.
