His favorite movie is a nature documentary and in Stone Ocean he's working as a marine biologist. I'm going to assume that he actually studied and went to college to do that, so it doesn't seem all that OOC for him to hit the books every now and again before bed.

To those who may have thought I was joking around in my previous post? I was not. If I feel you aren't ready for exams, I will make you roll for it. But if you have studied enough, then you can automatically pass, or maybe even critpass...

Are we literally learning the English language now or just Japanese grammar and other things like that? Because a foreign language without a class on proper spelling and things like that would seem a bit odd.

English is a mandatory course in most Japanese schools, IIRC. Jotaro's probably been studying it since elementary school.
And yet despite that most Japanese people still completely suck at actually speaking the language.

In all fairness, the differences between English and Japanese are huge, what with the completely different sentence structures, the frequent omission of subjects, the lack of both articles and (most) consecutive consonants, etc. means it's very difficult for an English-speaker to learn Japanese and probably even harder vice versa. On top of that, Japan is to this day a very isolated (on both a geographical and a day-to-day culture level) and homogenous country; most Japanese people will never have to actually use English more than once or twice in a long while, so there isn't as much incentive to become fluent enough for an actual English-speaker to understand what you're saying. And the use of Engrish for decorative or fashion purposes in Japan (i.e. slapping nonsense English words and phrases on whatever you feel like because you think it looks cool) probably doesn't help either.
