Homura Akemi took a deep breath as she sat in the hospital bed.
I can do this. The cameras have blind spots, if you can find them; it's only the people I need to worry about. If this worked, she should have significantly more freedom than she had in previous attempts to save Madoka. If. With one final look around the room that had been hers for so long, Homura rose to unsteady feet, got dressed, made sure her braids and glasses were in place, and took small, wavering steps as she made her way down the hall. There were a few close calls as hospital staff passed her by, but she simply nodded respectfully to them and, since she wasn't dressed as a patient, they nodded back and let her go on her way. The first two corners were unusable, clogged with people as they were. Homura fumed inwardly, but the third blind corner - more of a dog-leg jog in the hallway - was free of observers. Though it required the most effort to actually exit the hospital without being spotted, Homura leapt at the chance, almost hurrying before she remembered to keep her speed down. As she entered the two-second window during which no cameras would be able to observe her, she quickly transformed, bringing her shield into play, and froze time. She quickly checked her position relative to the cameras' location, then grinned and, for the first time in dozens of loops, laughed happily. Quickly regaining her composure, she rushed through the hospital and outside to freedom, glad that she had been able to complete the checkout paperwork in her room.
As far as the world was concerned, the girl known as Homura Akemi vanished completely some time after 1400 on March 16, 2011. This would go unnoticed by anyone until over a week later, when her father noticed that no expenditures had been made on the card issued to her. A formal investigation of the hospital revealed that the last known sighting of her occurred on a security camera at 1409. The hospital was not blamed for her disappearance.

I think I understand why Kyouko does what she does, Homura thought as she sat on a shadowed rooftop, eating a stolen meal as she observed Madoka and Sayaka from her perch. She had, so far, been able to keep Kyubey from introducing himself to Madoka, though his appearances at school had been difficult to disrupt, due to the number of people and Mami's presence. She had considered obtaining a bow or crossbow to take the creature out silently, but had opted instead for extreme vigilance and her Magic Blasts - weak as they were compared to firearms, their near-silence made them the far better option for stealth kills.
I imagine Mami is getting rather frazzled by now, as well. Between the brief spurts of magic she must be sensing and the Grief Seeds I leave near her, she must be wondering what is going on, and with Kyubey unable to help explain she can't help but be concerned.

Days passed, turning to weeks. Kyubey had been successfully kept from Madoka and Sayaka, and Mami and Kyouko had managed to patch together a somewhat creaky relationship after Mami had gone to her former partner to beg her to stop tormenting her. Homura felt bad for the deception, but believed the benefits to outweigh the risks - without Sayaka to blunder into a Grief Spiral, knowledge of the true nature and fate of magical girls could wait until after the critical danger had passed and Mami could be watched to ensure she proved no threat; similarly, Kyouko would have no need to sacrifice herself against Sayaka's Witch; Madoka would not contract so long as Kyubey could not contact her; Mami would not fall into a state of overconfidence and thus hasten her death; and between the three of them, Homura was certain that she, Mami, and Kyouko could bring down Walpurgisnacht without Madoka needing to be involved, even though Kyubey would likely contact her during the battle. She only needed to keep it up for a few more weeks, nineteen more days until the arrival of Walpurgisnacht and the - hopefully - decisive battle.

"Just three more days~ Just three more days~" Homura softly chanted to herself as she folded another piece of blue paper. She now had a massive origami army, hundreds strong, consisting of skirmishing and flanking Kyoukos, a dense firing line of Mamis, and a protective ring of Sayakas surrounding the huddled Madokas. She giggled softly to herself as she considered the folded figures, admiring the colored ranks arrayed before her. The cats behind her meowed softly, jumping in and out of the several large cardboard boxes Homura had obtained. She looked back quickly to make sure their food and water dishes were still full, then returned to her paper-folding, only to see several wet splotches on the piece she was holding. She furiously crumpled it up and tossed it aside before turning her attention to the roof. "I'm going to find that leak! I keep fixing this stupid roof but it keeps getting leaks!"

Kyouko and Mami stood at the edge of a rooftop, watching the massive Witch float through the sky toward Mitakihara. Whether Kyubey had told them, they'd simply felt the disruptions and come to deal with it, or they'd learned from some other source, Homura didn't know. She only knew that they were there, standing between Walpurgisnacht and the citizens of Mitakihara, and that was good enough for her. She continued her observation as the Witch drifted into reality, its circus preceding it, that maddening laugh echoing in her ears. The veteran magical girls advanced as the Witch came into view, Kyouko leading the way with her flashing spear, Mami two bounds behind her - close enough to support her easily, but far enough to prevent the two from being caught in the same attack. Kyubey wasn't with them - he was probably in the shelter trying to convince Madoka to form a contract with him.
Maybe I should have warned her? But with other people there, she should be fine … there's no reason for her to wander off, and she'll probably dismiss Kyubey as something stress-induced ….. Homura took a deep breath before resuming her watch on the two girls advancing on Walpurgisnacht. Though still quite far from the Witch itself, a cloud of darkness advanced on them, a vast horde of familiars seeking to eliminate them. Homura nodded somberly. Hopefully they would be able to cut through the shadows of magical girls, then continue on toward the Witch while Homura made her way to the location she had selected. This was the most dangerous part of her plan - she hadn't transformed yet, hoping that the lack of a signature would let her close on her enemy without being detected, but if a pack of familiars attacked her she risked death without having the chance to fight back.
Here I am. Homura stood in the shadows of one of the few remaining buildings on this bank of the river, watching Kyouko and Mami hammer futilely against the apparently-impervious hide. As they fell back from the buildings thrown through the air by the cackling Witch, Homura transformed and stopped time.
They will need time to recover, to use Grief Seeds to lower their Corruption. She pulled dozens, then hundreds, of weapons to use against the Witch - RPGs, anti-tank rockets, and short-range anti-air missiles. As the frozen sky above her became cluttered with munitions, Homura resisted the temptation to throw everything she had at the Witch in a single massive salvo; that tactic had never worked before, and what was important now as covering Kyouko and Mami, so sustained fire was imperative. Finally satisfied with her initial volley, the black-haired girl unfroze time, and the varied missiles streaked upwards to detonate against the stage-building Witch. A series of explosions rocked the abomination, distracting it from its initial prey and alerting it to Homura's presence. A flood of familiars flew to her position, and she smiled grimly.
Time for the next phase.
Twice more Kyouko and Mami made their attacks; whenever they did so, Homura withdrew, cleansing her own Soul Gem and ensuring her arsenal was still able to keep up the fight. As the two girls pulled back for the third time, however, a high-pitched wail erupted from their position, then a wave of black energy roiled outward. Temporarily abandoning her assault on the great Witch, Homura leapt onto a nearby building to see what had happened - and saw Kyouko frozen in shock as Candeloro, Mami's Witch, bound her with ribbons, then made a single, almost gentle, strike against her Soul Gem. As the familiars of Walpurgisnacht converged on her position, and the Witch itself began to flip over, presenting the gears of its upper body to the town below, Homura closed her eyes and looped again.
