[] Plan: Fate refused
-[] Serr Vidente, The Doom Prophet: The gift of foresight is a rare and terrible thing, even amongst Curze's sons. Once the prophecy is known it cannot easily be escaped. So it is that Serr was charged with preparing his brothers for their inevitable dooms. As Chapter Master he will be master of martyrs. Their lives shall not be spent in vain, for the Imperium is built upon the ennobled dead.

-[] Grand Quixote: Supposedly this was a former Knight World. Though all records suggests that a Freeblade visited the planet only once on a hunt for greater foes. Regardless of the truth, the spirit of chivalry remains unblemished. The people here are brave, pious, and utterly naive to the horrors lurking amongst the stars. What they lack in experience they will more then make up for in spirit and steel. As an aside despite your queries the archives of Mars hold no answers for why the population of Knight Worlds despise windmills.

It's almost a shame that fleet/crusade are good for pirate hunting, because I'd be very interested in what sorts of phrophets would be produced by the world with a talent for short term divination.

-[] Novis Credo, The Last of Terra: The last Terran to join the eighth. Like many Night Lords at the time he had been a true believer in the Great Crusade. Unlike his brothers he alone seemed to value restraint. Inflicting only what cruelties were necessary for his purpose. He will never forgive Curze for what the Night Lords became, nor will he tolerate such rot within his Chapter.
Trait: Due Vendetta
-[] Aidan: A land of harsh mountains, gentle valleys and man eating sheep. The planet of Aidan is known for producing high quality and discipline soldiers specializing in orbit to ground operations via drop pod insertion. A grim and determined people. They will be good stock for the war machine.

Very low-keyish, but feel like the focus on restraint and discipline would do these Night Lord hopefuls good.

Beautiful, I have no words for a fellow Quijano-maxxing bretheren. For what is more beautiful than to live and die for an idealistic dream?
Definitely have my vote regardless of how terrible this'll go, heh.

The one who will show you human potential is . . . I had fun, but it's a damn shame I couldn't get you to go all out. But hey, I bet one of my brothers will be able to kick your ass, so I'll be waiting on the other side, do you want anything when you get there? — random GQ astartes when their soul has a dream/vision as they enter the warp

So what's the difference between fleet based and crusader fleet?

Crusader Fleets are my way of delineating the difference between 'we are fleet based because of sane reasons' and 'having a homeworld means we can't fully commit ourselves to fighting mankind's enemies literally all the time for all eternity'.

Also known as, The Imperial Fists vs the Black Templars.

I want them to see their dooms and take refuge in the audacity of saying "Nah, I will win"

Word of warning. Grand Quixote is based on Don Quixote*, albeit a much more optimistic reading then the author intended.

So you're much more likely going to end up with Astartes giving very inspiring speeches as they march boldly to their deaths (and likely saving many lives in the process).

[] Plan: Angels and Devils
-[] Cadit Obitus, The Exiled Raven: Before they met their Primarch the Raven Guard had been so much crueler then what they became. Cadit served as a call back to those days and faced exile for it. His skills in stealth and terror found him adopted by The Night Lords. Only to be abandoned once more when The Heresy came. Despite his travails this one remains ever loyal and effective to his purpose.
Trait: Apparitions That Stalk the Night
-[] Vennia: An ocean world populated with sailors, nobles, and upjumped merchantmen. The nobles of this world believe strongly in a form of public honor. A game of innuendo and wit in which missteps are harshly punished. Challenges for honor or position often result in ritual duels with blade and pistol. If things escalate beyond what mere word and deed may mend? There are always blades in the dark, poisoned wine, and more besides. Honor is your life, guard it well.

Like the sort of two-faced nature of Vennia and the way it inspires cleverness and stresses the importance of how you present yourself.

In the light of day, to the Imperium and the Navy we come off as honorable and stalwart angels, while to our enemies we're devils to fear, lurking in the dark

-[] Crusade Fleet: This marine will shun a homeworld so that they can wage war unfettered across the stars. They will be granted an expanded Chapter Fleet and will be granted certain other privileges deemed necessary for their role. Even so, such conditions serve as crucibles. They will earn victory over their foes or they will face extinction.

As much as I think a pirate hunter chapter NEEDS to be fleet based to do its job properly, i really wish there was something baked in to make it more appealing than planetary options.

Just, Fleet based is almost inherently always going to be the boring option, winning only when it is the Practical option.

Fleet-based with a special flagship maybe? Though I will say that a homeworld which has shipyards would arguably be better for this than fleet-based.

I'm thinking fleet based would be best for a Night Lords, Pirate Hunting Chapter. Keeps them mobile and keeps them elusive.

In hindsight I should have limited the mission to just a segmentum or covering a few sectors worth of high value. I think that might have limited the feeling you *need* to be fleet based. Regardless, you'll be able to find worthy and meaningful prey. Some of them will even come to you!

The Crusade Fleet option was an attempt to build in some more flavor then just 'cast to the winds' void fleet. Currently the basic fleet would essentially be a 50/50 of your rolled traits and your chapter master's influence. Probably will replace them with predefined fleets (with some cultural hooks) next turn. I had considered an explicitly void or ship based planet but figured you guys wouldn't consider anything else if I put that in this turn.

For what it's worth. If you take a planet that has some serious advantages even for pirate hunting. You get to essentially lock down a sector and bring it's resources to bear in furthering your goals. Along with any expertise they have or build up in your chapter of course. That and they're often important locations to protect anyways so no one will be upset that you keep part of your fleet there. Doubly so when the Freebootaz, Drukhari Archons, Headhunting Warbands, and or local Champions of Chaos are inevitably drawn to your presence.

I like this plan. Historically the Terran Night Lords were exceptionally prone to enhanced dark vision, even having trouble without filters against common sunlight. Being further away from Penelope (sorry Odysseus) and hammered with storms likely means while not Nostromo levels of dark it will have limited light. Additionally I like the sea monsters, I can see a task for new marines would be to defeat such a beast, maybe even the type they slay could mean something to them individually. Also underwater combat isn't too different to fighting in the void itself, and I like the image of this chapter flying through the void as they aggressively board enemy ships.

I also like that plan because, as I said earlier in the thread, the idea of short-term Prophecy is extremely interesting to me.

Before voting begins I'd like to churn the waters for our dark horse candidate to have a shot.

His trait 'Apparitions that stalk the night' will be giving you guys a universal stealth ability (including your ships) and let you terrorize foes who would normally resist such things. So he is the most maximal pirate hunter of your options.

Guaranteed traits are going to be powerful and all that, just spoiling his because he was getting no play.
