Alec brushed his teeth as he considered his situation.
Or he considered his situation as he brushed his teeth.
Either or. Maybe both.
He was in Vermilion City, a place that wouldn't have stood out in nearly thirty years worth of PokeMon memory if not for a few things.
There was a truck here. It was parked next to the S.S.Anne and had been featured in rumors about capturing the mythic PokeMon, Mew.
That was pretty much it. It'd been a while since he'd played -any- of the games but the ones he most remembered were Sapphire and Ruby. He'd personally mastered one of them, he used to have the clock memorized for watering his Lum Berries and he'd completed the PokeDex.
Red, Blue and Yellow had been fun. Yellow more so than the other two for its gimicky nature with the starter Pikachu. Silver, Gold and Crystal had been great, he'd loved the new legendaries and the starter PokeMon felt like they'd had so much more variety in personality.
Then he'd hit a rough patch in his life, couldn't get the new handheld consoles and only sporadically played any of the later games until the Switch had come out. He knew about the intervening years, yes, but that had been more secondhand information and wiki crawling after Sword and Shield had come out.
Alec leaned over and spat a mouthful of foam into the sink.
So. Game information. He knew a lot but it only sort of mattered because he had a lot of facts but not so much context. And that would only matter if he was in one of the game realities.
He could already dismiss the PokeMon Mystery Dungeon series, at least.
If he was dealing with the Anime... Well, inconsistent power levels, inconsistent feats, super-tech at budget costs and folks pointing guns at kids.
And here he was without a single little PokeBuck to his name. Or PokeDollar or whatever word they used for the money.
"Hurry up!" Someone banged on the door to the bathroom. "I gotta pee!"
Or his own place.
"One second!" Alec called, grabbing the bottle of mouthwash and uncapping it. "I'll be right out."
He took a big swig and put the cap back on the bottle, putting it away before he left the room. Some kid, Herman, dashed past him and Alec made his way to the kitchenette instead.
They'd put him in a group home after Jenny and Joy got done pretending they weren't trying to talk over his head. They'd taken a picture of him, ran his fingerprints and promised they'd find his parents as quickly as possible.
He wished them all the luck in the world.
The group home was... An odd little facet that he'd had to ask a lot of questions about after he'd been introduced to the matron of the place, an older, retired Nurse Joy.
Apparently, it wasn't that uncommon for a kids parents to run off and relive their PokeMon Journey. Usually only one did it at a time, usually they scheduled it so their kids wouldn't be left alone.
It was a great way to supplement the household income if someone worked a seasonal job, he'd been told.
Unusually, both parents would dash off into the night with dreams of being the very best. Typically there was an upsurge right after a major televised event, like one of the Conferences or the rare chance that someone actually takes on the Champion. Folks remembered the good old days where they weren't doing accounting or wishing they'd stayed in school instead of running off at the age of ten and failing to learn any domestic trades.
Miss Joy may have been a little bit bitter when she explained things to Alec. Just a bit. She'd been the head nurse at the Saffron City Hospital which was apparently a cutthroat job that demanded long hours and an absurd level of dedication. Matron Joy had retired, old and alone, and then decided to try taking care of a bunch of abandoned kids to replace the children she'd never had.
Alec had some opinions on that matter. Opinions he intended on keeping to himself-
Stopping at the kitchen sink, he leaned over and spat out the burning, minty mouthwash he'd carried with him from the bathroom.
"That's disgusting." An old woman, short and stout, complained. She held the head of a cane in her offhand and she'd apparently been looking at several letters when he'd entered the room. She was bent forward, bowed by the years she'd lived through and her hair was more gray than pink. "Use the bathroom sink, young man!"
"One of the other kids needed to use the bathroom." He defended himself. "I figured this was the best compromise."
"Hmm... Fine." The old curmudgeon glared at him for a moment before dropping the letters on the kitchen table and sitting down. "Bills, welfare check from the League, reminder from the League about pre-season registration..."
"The Gym Challenge?" Alec asked as he dug through the cupboards over his head to figure out where the cups were.
"Professor Oak, actually." The woman grumbled as Alec filled a glass with water from the sink. "The Gym Challenge has already started for the year so this is a reminder that, should any of the children here wish to get a Starter from Professor Oak and apply to be a Lab Trainer, they need to get started now to qualify for things next year."
"Huh. Neat." Alec hadn't really given much thought on the backside of things. In the games and the anime, people just showed up at random and the Professor's gave them a PokeMon. Always really big on the whole 'Rock, Paper, Scissors' thing, too. "What's on the other side of it?"
Alec didn't exactly mean to pry. He just had a hard time -not- reading anything placed in front of him.
"Hmm?" The woman hummed, turning over the sheet as some of the other kids started to filter into the room. "Keh! A notice about a job opening. Oak must've run off another field researcher. I swear I see this every other year."
"Well, what are the requirements to apply?" Alec asked, holding out his hand.
The old woman glared at him for a moment, prompting him to roll his eyes before she handed the paper over to him and stood up. He started reading through it while she got the children situated through the room and began making breakfast.
Applying to be a lab trainer had some fairly strict demands. High grades, an included essay that reached a minimum of eight-hundred words, no criminal background and the applicant needed to pass an interview with Oak himself if they should meet the other requirements.
Flipping the paper over, he read through the job offer as he continued drinking his water.
Job responsibilities included a significant amount of fieldwork, regular check-ins with Oak himself whilst on assignment. No badges required but at least four preferred. Minimum of two personal PokeMon. The pay was one-hundred and five thousand Pokedollars a month which...
Alec flipped the sheet over and grabbed a pen out of a mug full of them on the middle of the table. Running through the math, that was... Equal to about six-hundred and fifty dollars. Per month.
He could suddenly see why folks weren't too keen to keep working for Oak.
The bit after the pay, though, definitely caught his attention. Folks working for Oak would enjoy a discount on all official PokeMon supplies such as potions, PokeMon feed and PokeBalls as well as discounted rates at hotels and free access to study material needed for various licenses.
He was pretty sure the licenses would be a good idea. Alec needed to get to a weak point in reality if he wanted to punch through with Gate and he didn't remember any of those being in Kanto. He'd read about the wormholes in Alola, which might be promising, and he knew that either the Hall of Origin or the Reverse World would be the weakest links being the metaphorical 'Top' and 'Bottom' of reality.
Oak hadn't listed any educational requirements... And Alec would have a significantly easier time getting to Alola or Hisui if he could move about openly...
"Hey, Joy?" Alec set the paper down and looked up at the woman. "Do we have any spare PokeBalls?"
"Go ask at the PokeMon Center. You need to be registered before you can do anything." She said, fully distracted by the half dozen kids around her as she tried to work at the stove to make some kind of eggs. "And it's 'Miss' Joy."
"Alright." Alec agreed, standing up and pushing his chair back under the table. "I'll be back later."
"Wait!" She shouted, turning to look at him. "...Take Owen with you. Ask Joy there if he can register, for me. He's been begging me to let him get a Growlithe and it is about that time."
"...Sure?" Alec looked at the various babbling brats but he had no idea which one was Owen.
The Youngster had apparently been listening, however, and a smaller boy peeled away from the group. The kid was wearing a pair of shorts, a plain white tee-shirt and a blue ballcap that was sitting sideways on his head.
"Come on!" The little kid shouted, grabbing Alec's hand. "Let's go! I wanna get a Growly!"
Alec, bemused, let the boy pull him along without resistance.
It was a weird start, but... Well, Alec decided to reserve judgement.
This wasn't his reality, it had different rules, different ideas of 'Normal'. The PokeMon battle he'd seen on the television, a big old LCD one in the hospital, would've been considered a vicious and violent blood sport back home.
Here, the PokeMon had gotten right up after the fight was over and happily trotted back to their trainers, clearly excited and happy.
This was a strange, new world and he was going to have to adapt. At least, until he managed to escape.
