I imagine the FBI in New York in the 80s might also be a bit more understandable because you'd be mostly working a bunch of the back end finances and paper trails for mob syndicates and the new big drug cartels, and you could probably get away with quite a bit of covert progressivism with even your fellow g-men under the banner of "fuck the NYPD".

Yep, or nabbing white collar criminals.

I do not understand the mindset of queer cops. If you are queer, why be a cop? Why subject yourself to that culture and why enforce the very hierarchies that oppress you?
Probably the same reason anybody not part of the "majority" join law enforcement.
A belief that the system can be changed from within, or that a more diverse force will be more reactive to the needs of a diverse public, or that they can be an example of how their group can be "normal" upstanding members of society.
Eeeeeeeh, leaning a bit too hard on antagonist tropes a bit on some points. It's usually far more mundane: Serve and protect the community, including the part they grew up in. Especially if they have past experience in tight-knit group-culture-heavy organizations like the military.

It's not like people in the U.S. see your local meth dealer as Robin Hood.

Presumably, to be the change they want to see in the police force.

Something about that man at the newsstand set me on edge… but he also had an air of comforting familiarity. I couldn't quite put my finger on it.
A bit sad that Noah didn't recognize the obligatory Stan Lee cameo despite being an SI. Not a big Marvel fan in the before, I take it?

I'm gonna project a bit here and wildly assume the poor secretary applicant was harrangued by parentals to show initiative and drive by applying early! Obeying instructions to wait a whole week is just an excuse to be lazy, do you even really want the job if your aren't willing to do some borderline harrasing???

Also wow Raven that level of pettiness and cattiness has spontaneously manifestested into a cat giving me the stinkeye on my desk.

Noa will never escape Magneto!

She could flee to the highest mountain, or the deepest cave, and in the dark stumbling ever deeper into the bowels of the Earth...

She would step on him while he was trying to take a nap or something.
Almost like there's a mysterious unseen force pulling their lives together

No, I'm pretty sure she was, with how many facts she knows. Stan's just got a 'you've totally never seen me before' field going on, same reason Cap runs across someone the spitting image of someone he knew in the '40s who doesn't seem to have aged at all and doesn't think anything of it, and why SHIELD isn't running an investigation into this one guy who seems to have been present for every major hero's origin story and many of the major events in their lives.

Alternatively, Stan's actually The Watcher here, as well, and his bullshit trumps Noa's out-of-universe knowledge.

Something like... magnetism?

I really like this fic, but if I have one criticism, it's that I can't seem to get a solid handle on what Marvel things Noa can be expected to know. Like, she recognizes Erik as Magneto and Matt as Daredevil (even though Daredevil doesn't even exist yet), but spends multiple paragraphs ruminating on the fact that she doesn't know anything about Donald Blake except that he's a nice doctor.

Don't get me wrong, I like how little of a role metaknowledge plays in this fic. I think fics that rely heavily on how well the SI knows canon are generally self-indulgent and uninteresting. It's just that whether or not Noa knows (or at least recognizes) a thing seems a bit arbitrary, which makes a lot of the little cameos feel... kinda off? Like if Thor or Kitty Pryde or somebody is on screen, I feel like I'm spending most of my time trying to figure out of Noa recognizes them and did this on purpose, or if it's just a hell of a coincidence and Noa is clueless, or if I'm completely wrong and it's not who it looks like it is.

Again, I love the fic, it's an extremely refreshing take on the SI genre and a fun look at an under-explored aspect of super hero fiction. This is just a little nitpick.

Oh hai there Thor, what a coincidence. Though not as big as Eric showing up at Noa's parents. Now that's awkward. :_D

I assume Matt won't show up again here, btw? His role in the story seems like has been fulfilled, and he's probably still in Noa's old office.

Actually, I don't think anybody's given pop culture legal analysis to any continuity of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
That's a funny idea, because most people think "turtles vs ninjas", but things in TMNT can escalate pretty fast.
The IDW comics alone has crimes against humanity and animals sentience everywhere, and even had an arc where Krang went to trial for centuries of screwing over several dimensions and planets. The current Mutant Town arc might even have something interesting to say, even if it's the most "tame" arc in the series.

Ah Thor, living up to that title as King of Lesbians.
Wait what? Is this a thing?

Thor is a lesbian icon, according to fans

"He's MY god of thunder."

Wait what? Is this a thing?
Yeah, it's a tumblr meme. Someone noticed Thor was popular amongst lesbians, made a joke out of it, and it snowballed a bit.
It's way too late at night for me to be doing any comprehensive researching, but this page has at least a few examples.
Now this is Best Mythology. Much better than the old version, hammer=phallic symbol is super cliche and ignores the fact "fertility" was more about rain watering the crops.:V

I love that it just seems to come almost out of nowhere and all the funnier with Hemsworth going "Yes, this is Truth."

I really enjoyed this new update. Happy Chanukah and thanks for writing one of my favorite stories :)

And it didn't even last the whole date, because it became very obvious that despite how we were in our professional lives, neither of us was the take-charge type in a relationship.

I see behind your lies!

This whole time, we thought that this was just a well written amazing behind the scenes look to a universe where mutant oppression interacts with the legal system... But no!

This was secretly a quirky romcom adventure where magneto finds true love!

Ah ha, I say!

Finds true love.

And she's gay.

Even true love can be unrequited.

Someone's gonna be doing it. But they can do it right.

All enforcement is selective - those who enforce The Rules have decisions to make on what to do, how hard to do it, and all that fun stuff. It's better for those decisions to be made by someone with perspective, understanding, and humanity.

And since the cops in general seem to be so bad at it, clearly there is an urgent and ongoing need for that sort of someone.

But for the love of God, I thought as I tore the resume in front of me in half, then in half again.
Wait, what? Do law firms generally... not read the CVs of their applicants in advance of the interview? Is the standard interview process really 'show up with your CV/cover letter/etc. and then sit there while the interviewer reads through them during the interview time and comes up with a bunch of questions off the top of their head'?

Before the advent of the internet, absolutely. They could probably fax it, but depending on the field, won't give it more than a cursory glance before the actual interview.

First, happy Hanukah! Second, it is amazing how, in a few Marvel stories I've read, when Stan Lee has a cameo in them, there doesn't need to be a linked picture of him, you JUST KNOW it's him.

Whoa! I just had a disturbing realization.

When the idiots fired Noa, they shot themselves in the foot epically.

Kinda hard to stand up for Mutant Rights when you aren't practicing what you preach!
