[X] Yuma wants to clarify something.
-[X] QB just said that he created a situation where Mami Tomoe will be killed if nobody helped her.
-[X] He admitted that, had anyone tried, he would have prevented them from contacting Mami.
-[X] He planned everything so that, for Mami to survive, one would have to sacrifice their everyday existence and become a Magical Girl, forever fighting Witches.
-[X] Sooo why is it Sayaka's fault and not QB's again? He knew the witch was too strong for Mami, yet instead of telling her as much so she could retreat, he tried to trick people into contracting. It isn't Sayaka's fault! Madoka, you tell her!
[X] Get Madoka to speak up.
[X] Hug Sayaka
-[X] With Madoka
"No," you say. Sayaka looks up, tear-stained eyes locking on to your face. "It's not your fault."
"But you heard him," says Sayaka, subdued. "All I had to do was make a contract and I could have saved her. Instead, I stood there like a coward and watched it e-eat her!"
"Yuma wants to clarify something," you say. "Kyubey
just said that he made a situation where Mami Tomoe would be killed if no one helped her! He said that he would have stopped you from contacting her with telepathy! He planned everything so that, for Mami to survive, someone would have to sacrifice themselves and become a magical girl!"
"
I find it odd that you would use the word 'sacrifice', Yuma Chitose. Would you not say that becoming a magical girl has been a marked improvement in your life?"
"Yeah, I guess," you say. "But that was just for
me. Having to fight witches all the time, risking your life, day-in-day-out? For most people, that would be a lot worse." You walk closer to Sayaka, putting a hand on her shoulder. "So Sayaka, how was Mami's death your fault and not Kyubey's? He
knew that the witch was too strong for Mami, yet instead of telling her as much so she could retreat, he tried to trick people into contracting."
"
The witch's barrier was located at a hospital," says Kyubey. "
The sick and disabled make easy prey for witch's familiars, so you could say that time was of the essence."
"And it was better to risk Mami's life?" you counter. "You could have saved her, but instead you manipulated people to try and make them contract!"
"
If the witch had been slain, no harm would have occurred to anyone," says Kubey. "
Attempting to evacuate a hospital, on the other hand, would have been quite a costly endeavor, and the patients on the brink of death or who need functions provided at the hospital would have been immobile."
"So you
don't even mention it?" you say, glaring at him. "No, this was
your fault, Kyubey! If you had been honest, if you had just told them everything, it would have been okay!"
Kyubey meets your gaze, unblinking, and at the corner of your eye you see Homura fidget, the first movement she's made since Sayaka started blaming herself. And on that note, you have a friend to comfort.
"Sayaka, Mami's death wasn't your fault," you say, caring warmth replacing the burning anger you feel towards Kyubey. "Now, Yuma wasn't there, so Yuma can't say exactly what happened, but Yuma still knows it's not your fault. And Yuma knows that you're the only one here who thinks it's your fault."
"
Actually, I-"
"Kyubey, Yuma's going to quote Big Sis Kyoko on this one and tell you to shut the fuck up, you worthless, murdering, walking pile of
garbage."
Kyubey's tail remains swishing, but he follows your advice and shuts up.
"Now like Yuma was saying, no one
important here thinks that Mami's death was your fault," you continue. "Madoka, you were there, right? You know it wasn't her fault!"
Madoka jumps, but then shakes her head and fixes Sayaka with an intense gaze.
"Yuma's right, Sayaka. Mami's death wasn't your fault! Yes, you could have made a contract, but
I could have as well! If Mami's death was your fault, then it was my fault as well!"
Sayaka shakes her head, tears still falling.
"N-No, Madoka, it wasn't your fault!" she says. "You didn't know what you wanted to wish for, you
still don't, but I did! I wasn't a hundred percent sure, so I waited. In the end, I wished for what I had wanted in the labyrinth, but I waited until after Mami was dead! If I had been braver, if I hadn't been such a coward, I could have- I could have saved her, but I let her die!"
Madoka shakes her head, pulling Sayaka into a hug. Kyoko steps forward, and you wonder for a moment if she'll join the soon-to-be hug pile of her own volition, before she instead speaks up.
"No, that would have been a shitty idea. Rushing your wish could only have created problems," she says. "Trust me, I know," she adds on, seeing Sayaka open her mouth.
"Sayaka, I was with Mami before we met up with you," says Madoka. "I… I promised her that I'd become a magical girl, and fight by her side, but when she… when she died, it didn't even occur to me to make a wish. I was just so afraid, watching it eat her, but you became a magical girl even after seeing that. So don't ever say you're a coward, Sayaka, because you're fighting for something. You're risking your life to help people, even knowing what could happen to you, and if that's not brave, I don't know what is."
Sayaka's breath hitches, her heavy sobs growing into a full-on wailing cry as she buries her face in Madoka's shoulder. Her chest heaves as she lets out her grief, emotions hidden under the surface coming to bear. You lean forward, wrapping your arms around her midsection and laying your head against her chest. An arm wraps around you, so you know your hug is appreciated, but Sayaka doesn't give any other signal.
She just sobs.
Kyoko and Homura stand to the side awkwardly, uninvolved in the three-person hug but knowing better than to interrupt Sayaka.
You hold Sayaka tight, a more difficult then it seems given how badly she's shaking, but there are far more important things than your comfort. Most of her weight is being supported by Madoka, but you're helping hold her up as she lets it all out.
After about a minute, Sayaka's sobbing calms down, and she begins to speak.
"I- I think you guys may… may have a point. K-Kyubey lied to us, and he tricked us, and he sent Mami to die. But I could have helped her, could have
saved her, and I don't think I'll ever stop regretting that."
Madoka frowns, eyes narrowing. "Sayaka, it wasn't-"
"Maybe. Maybe it wasn't my fault, and if Kyubey had been honest with us then Mami never would have died, but I still could have done something!"
Homura inhales sharply, and steps closer to Sayaka.
"Sayaka Miki, could I please see your soul gem?" she says. Sayaka tilts her head but compiles, lifting her hand and manifesting her soul gem in her palm.
You gasp, surprised by how dark it is. If you had to guess, you'd say it's sitting somewhere between half and two-thirds corruption.
"As I suspected," says Homura. "Sayaka Miki, did you use much magic between meeting Kyoko Sakura and now?"
"Well, yeah," says Sayaka. "I hunted down some familiars, and I tried out some new moves. I can make a really huge sword, not that it can help anything."
Homura sighs, transforming into her magical girl outfit and pulling a grief seed out from her shield. "You used your magic irresponsibly," she says, pressing the seed to Sayaka's gem. "A high amount of corruption in your soul gem leads to a sharp decrease in emotional stability. You will become slightly more irritable at around one-third corruption, though effects only become noticeable at one-half. In the future, I would suggest cleansing your soul gem before that point."
Sayaka lets out a deep breath as the corruption flows from her soul gem, shoulders relaxing.
"I really feel better now," she says. "But why would it get so corrupted so quickly? I used some magic, sure, but it wasn't
that bad."
"You spent the afternoon thinking about the situation of Kyoko Sakura and Yuma Chitose, correct?"
Sayaka nods her head, eyes narrowed in confusion. "Yeah, I was. I was thinking about what it must be like, to not have… well, most things. Life without my dad, without school, and I got kinda depressed."
"
Negative emotions can corrupt your soul gem," says Kyubey. "
Your overuse of magic, when combined with your train of thought for the entire afternoon, most likely resulted in a self-perpetuating spiral of negative emotions."
Sayak frowns, and you try not to growl at Kyubey.
"You are not wanted here," says Homura. "Leave us be, or I will make you."
"
If you so wish," says Kyubey. "
Goodbye, Madoka Kaname. I hope to see you soon."
"I hope you fuck off soon," says Kyoko. "So go do that."
Kyubey lowers its head in what you think is frustration, walking out of the room. You'd wonder how he'll get out of the hotel, but you're too busy being relieved by the lack of murdering fluffballs in your room.
You and Madoka keep your grip on Sayaka, and though you know Sayaka's not in such a bad state anymore you can't bring yourself to let go.
"Kyoko Sakura," you catch Homura whispering. "If we begin hugging each other, do you think we can avoid the current hug pile?"
Kyoko smiles, looking over at Homura.
"Maybe, but let's not give them any more ammunition, okay buddy?"
Homura nods, and you finally decide to release Sayaka back into the cruel world. You let go, backing away, and Madoka follows suite a few seconds after you.
"Will you two be okay?" you ask. "You won't start blaming yourself the second you get out of Yuma's sight, will you?"
"No, I won't," says Sayaka. "Thanks, Yuma. Anyway, we should probably get some sleep."
"Actually, tomorrow's Sunday, right?" says Madoka. "Maybe we could get together then, go shopping or visit the arcade? If everyone's feeling up to it, of course."
"Not every day that people
ask me to destroy them at DDR," says Kyoko. "But, if someone else is paying, I guess I can oblige you."
"I suppose I can come, as long as Kyoko Sakura will be attending," says Homura.
"But I thought you two weren't dating?" says Sayaka, a shaky smile on her lips.
"Please, do not misunderstand. I do not believe that she would make the experience worthwhile, only that
someone will have the bright idea of performing karaoke, and I cannot have a worse singing voice than her."
"What about Yuma?" you say.
"I'm sure you have an awful singing voice as well," says Homura. "In any case, the entire outing depends on Sayaka Miki's mental wellbeing."
"I think I'll be fine," says Sayaka.
"Sayaka, don't push yourself," says Madoka. "If you don't feel up to it, we can always go some other day."
Sayaka drops her gaze, expression falling.
"Okay, I'll see how good I'm doing come tomorrow," she says. "Actually, we should exchange cell phone information, so we can always contact each other."
"I don't got one," says Kyoko. "Neither does Yuma. Unless you feel like giving me one?"
"It would be a logistical advantage," says Homura, hand on her chin. "I have money to spare, so we can see about getting you one when we go for our outing, be it tomorrow or some other day."
"I can't believe that actually worked," says Kyoko, astonished. "Well, guess I'll see you guys later."
The three of them mutter their goodbyes, and you see Homura putting her number into Madoka and Sayaka's phones as they head to their respective homes.
"Well, that was something," says Kyoko. "I think I'm done for the night. How bout you?"
"Yuma is rather tired," you say. "Yuma thinks she will brush her teeth now."
You do so, making sure to brush for a good two minutes before you change into your PJ's and slip into bed next to Big Sis Kyoko. You catch a glance of her expression as you do so, and you're surprised by how… downtrodden she seems to be.
At first you think she's just sad about Mami and Sayaka, but then you remember something important.
Kyoko's family died because of her wish.
As much as you hate to think about it, you're forced to face the possibility that Kyoko may still blame herself for their deaths, and that Sayaka's own self-blaming reminded her of this. If this is the case, then you should solve the problem via tactical application of Hugs, but tonight
has been a long night.
What do you do?
[ ] Ask Kyoko if she still blames herself.
[ ] Say nothing, but hug her extra hard tonight.
