I'm switching to Cuifen for now. We haven't seen much of her.

What is the point of letting someone go so they can learn to lead if you are going to hold their hand whenever they have difficulties?
Intelligence gathering is just one part of that.
There is a difference between hand holding and expecting someone to do the job of a high end intelligence agency single handedly as a teenager on short notice.

More importantly you as the GM have been formating the quest around us dealing with mostly short term problems with goals we have had either provided or suggested by the narrative. Now you are switching to a completely open ended structure where we have no information to act on. This can be death to quests as we as players need information from the GM to action on in order to do anything. We have no eyes, nor ears in the setting only the words you provide us. We can't act on something we haven't been told about. Even when players go and do something the GM never saw coming they are action on information given to them just in a different combination than expected.

You have basically told us to do "something" and then blindfolded us and expected us to know what is going on. Not having any idea of what is going on has been a big theme in this setting but we have never been required to deal with more than what is in front of us without being given intel before.

I was kind of confused while reading this before I remembered that I cut the explanation out of this chapter because it didn't fit. (It'll be in the next one)

Gaia will give you enough help to get you started, there wouldn't be much point to setting you up and then watching you instantly fail.

In addition, Rukia's comment was mainly directed at the fact Gaia will no longer answer questions in regard to Cerys' magic. No one thought about it for such a long time or figured it would not do any good, so that door has closed at this point.

Mind, you are not wrong.
However, the fact you mention us mainly having short term problems is indicative. There are quite a few hints to future problems strewn into the narrative once in a while, most of which end up unnoticed by the playerbase as a whole. Part of that is on Rukia for being rather obscure (and fishing the most insightful player into the Workshop-team), but part of that is also on the players for paying too little attention.

No, I am not meaning anyone specific. I know some are doing the best they can. But I also know there will be some who do much less than they could.

Need interaction with Cuifen
Allow me to introduce counterpoints and/or points you have not considered.
1) Daiyu is the only one I am actually considering "safe" in terms of mental well-being.
2) Sabina is a known cray-cray member of the team, that you picked her speaks well of you
3) Una, on the other hand, has just recently killed her first man, and the majority of people (I assume) have decided to support her in these trying times
4) Cuifen is the mystery option, but one that seems relatively benign.
5) This, as was said before, is a Social Focus vote, not an "interact solely with these" vote, so we may or may not have some opportunities to talk to her anyway.

SHARP EDGED TRAUMA
The next week passes in something of a blur, always on the lookout for something to go horribly wrong, even though each day passes uneventfully. You take the time to finally get around to putting some finishing touches on your spells, Juggernaut Wave no longer fluctuating as much when you cast it. That is going to be an ongoing project, if i leave it for too long I could lose control again. Not the end of the world, but annoying.

You had much greater success in trying to figure out what that odd cracking your sword does from time to time, well... kind of success. You aren't exactly sure how to start it, but you can make it start at least every one in eight attempts. You still don't know what it does, but the one time Una had seen you practising with it had mesmerised her, it had taken over an hour to get her to stop starting at you with glowing eyes. When you finally do get her to calm down, she tries to explain what she saw as best she can, which isn't very well.

Apparently it sorta-kinda-but-not-really -her own words- felt like her own spell, except it didn't. Hers feels somewhat like poking a hole in a sheet and scrunching the edges together when she's done, while yours feels like someone had started plunging a toilet with C4 and forgotten that they were on the 60th floor of a radio tower. In the middle of a hurricane.

You aren't exactly sure what that means, but she hasn't stopped bothering you about it since, even though she understands that you need to work on other things first. Maybe it's some sort of co-operative ability? Her power is kinda based off of mine, I guess it would make sense if I could do some of what she can. If just a smidgen less delicately, if her description is anything to go by. And that's not even going into how positively giddy Gaia has been since. You have something of an inkling as to why she's been to cheery after your discovery, but she's keeping it close to her chest for now.

You have a lot of experience in ignoring her odd moods though and your training with Una went well, better than well. She finally managed to fly on her own, not particularity fast, but given how often she's taken to floating everywhere, you have no doubt that she'll get up to speed soon enough. Your attempts at teaching her how to sword with Daiyu went just as well, more through your partner's effort than your own. I'm not good at teaching, that was more Morgan's thing...

"Ha!" You blink out of your thoughts as your sister takes a swing at you, a quick pulse of magic slapping her sword away as you dig your feet into the ground, grunting slightly as you pull your sword back from hitting her with another pulse. She recovers quickly, turning with the force and into a spin, using the momentum to strike at you as she comes around. Good plan, but it's really obvious what you are doing. Her arm is already extended to it's maximum length, not giving her the chance to pull it back for a stab. Slash then. You plant your sword into the ground, the massive flat side working well as a shield.

"Break." She drops to the ground panting as you lean against your sword, letting her catch her breath for a moment before speaking. "Good idea to use the momentum like that, but you left your arm extended, which means that you could only attack with a slash. That might work well against a normal target, but against someone who has a large weapon or a shield, it's easy to counter." She nods as you gently coax the air around her colder, a relieved sigh escaping her lips as the cool air touches her flushed skin.

Daiyu takes the opportunity to continue from there. "Next time, try to pull your arm back, so you can either slash or stab. Perhaps you could have used your flight to mitigate the spin as well, or use it to let the attack throw you back if you need space." Before starting, Daiyu had confessed to you that it had taken her too long to admit that normal sword teachings were mostly useless in magical combat, when your enemy would probably survive impalement and you were more likely to survive an attack than the ground beneath you. Most teachings were worse than useless, they would actively put you in a worse position.

She's taken it upon herself to try and create a 'Magical Girl' sword style, one that focuses more on overcoming enemies with multiple hits and taking advantage of the inherent toughness magical beings have. That most girls seem to have some sort of advanced mobility is also an important part, since you can't rely on having solid footing when most fights involve shattering the surroundings by accident.

Honestly, you don't really understand it much, but if the way Sabina has been looking at her like a vulture has anything to say, then maybe you should spend more time trying.

Speaking of the devil. When she's not training on her own, she's here, watching you train. You aren't sure if she's trying to figure out some sort of weakness in your abilities or if she just likes staring at you, you'd put it at a 50/50.

"Going to join us?" She shakes her head at your offer, returning to her passive staring. Alright then. She doesn't do anything for the rest of the the day, just following you at a close, but comfortable distance. You don't bother her until dinner, where you take her aside before sitting down.

"Aright." She doesn't protest your gentle grip, letting you guide her outside. "Is there anything wrong?" Other than your mind. You wince internally at the thought, immediately feeling bad for thinking it. It's not her fault, her magic did this to her.

"No, I've been feeling better lately." You raise an eyebrow as she falls silent and she keeps talking. "I feel bad when I try to be... not like I am now. It's easier when I just go with it." You bite your cheek, silently relived that neither you or your sister were changed like her, even if you feel guilty for thinking it. "Watching you helps." You blink. "I am your sword, I feel restless when I am useless to you." She slowly lifts a hand, taking a deep breath before letting out a long sigh as she places it on your shoulder, a small smile lifting her lips. "I realised that a sword that turns against its wielder is worse than useless, it's worth nothing more than the scrap you can salvage from it."

You nod slowly, her hand slowly drifting back to her side. "So, you watch me because I'm training?" She nods.

"A sword should always be ready and able, it should be the one that it's wielder trusts most and they should know each other intimately." Your eyebrows raise, but she turns away to look at the night sky. "You don't want that from me, but I can still learn you." Your mouth hangs open slightly, a dozen questions flittering about your head. I feel like I've just lost control of this conversation. "So I watch you, so that I can know exactly what you want when you use me." Her voice is solid, but you can see the very edge of red creeping down her neck as she speaks, her legs shaking very slightly. Oh, you poor girl.

"This is hard for you." She nods and you slowly suck in a breath. "I don't know what it's like to be changed like that, but I'll do what I can to..." You bite your lip and cross the line, stepping next to her and laying an arm over her shoulder. "I'll wield you as best I can." You look up to the stars, ignoring the blush you can see out of the corner of your eye. I'm so sorry. You gently hug her to your side as you feel a single drop of warm water roll down her face.

She slowly nods, ignoring the tear as she takes a deep breath. "Thank you, I'm not sure I could trust someone else to..." She looks back at the stars. "I want to keep a journal." You hum gently, thumb slowly stroking her shoulder. "So I can remember what I was like before." Your heart feels like it's being squeezed in a vice, but you just nod.

"I'll get you one tomorrow." She smiles, falling silent as she stands beside you, only breaking your vigil when you feel a gentle caress from Gaia. You give her another squeeze before stepping back and turning to the door. "Come on, dinner is waiting."

/LINE BREAK\

There. You quietly hum as you stop feeding your engine, the edges curved just so and... ahah! Gotcha. You metaphorically narrow your eyes, watching your engine very gently nibble away at the magic floating around you, a pull you hadn't noticed before slowly tugging everything towards you. It's like I'm the earth and magic is the apple. Magic only seems to react to gravity when it wants to, but to your engine it acts like you are gravity, very slowly moving towards you as far as you can sense. That's... pretty crazy. You're fairly sure that it doesn't have infinite range, but it's definitely further than you can sense, which is only... a couple of hundred metres. Ish.

That wasn't what really had you raising your eyebrows, well it was, but not really. It was the fact that you'd felt your sisters magic start drifting very slightly when she'd suddenly dropped into your lap. The amount was so small that you'd barely noticed, but it was. You tried to figure out what that meant, but were honestly stumped, at least until Gaia took pity on you. [I noticed it on your outing, if something dies close to you, then your 'engine' sucks up as much of it's magic as it can.] And then she left you to stew on the fact that you were basically eating people now. [It's good for your digestion?] You let out a long sigh, wishing that Omega would be more responsive.

It only sometimes answered your pokes for attention, and even then it sounded distant, like it was kind of busy. You have a good guess as to what that was, seeing as the overwhelming amount of magic you'd absorbed from that spell was quickly fading away, even though you didn't feel any weaker. If only- "Ugk." A single Una Mk1 missile impacts your stomach, knocking you onto your back with a thud. The little devil taking position on your stomach as you struggle to breathe. Reinforce, reinforce. Magic rushes to your ribcage and you take a deep gasp, flicking your sister in the forehead as you sit up. "Una, don't you think that you're getting a little old to be doing that?"

She shakes her head as she buries herself into your chest and you set your arms around her with a sigh, slowly stroking her hair as she stops moving. She's been getting better about it, but sometimes the past few weeks become too much and she runs to you to snuggle, often falling asleep in your embrace. Oh Una... You look over her shoulder, frowning as you resist the urge to sigh. You know what she's feeling, but there isn't anything you can do, just be there for her whenever she needs someone to hug.

You feel a depressing sense of understanding with Sabina now, being useless when someone needs you, but doing your best anyway. "It's alright." You gently whisper into her ear, feeling her start to fall asleep. "I'll always be here, no matter what." I won't die. She doesn't smile, but some of the tense muscles in her back relax as she closes her eyes. I'll never leave you...

Maybe you should have waited for the Update to actually hit for the training montage. Rukia adjusts the sheets around the same time.
That aside, I mentioned a few days ago that Una's sheet was updated.

Well, here's my first try at actually laying out my thoughts on an update. Don't expect me to be very articulate or even catch all my thoughts, but at least it's something?

Cerys is paranoid of things going horribly wrong. With good reason, unfortunately.

Juggernaut wave is under control. (As a sidenote, I think that training also counted towards Continental Collision. IIRC it was 1/6 before.)
You had much greater success in trying to figure out what that odd cracking your sword does from time to time, well... kind of success. Considering the spell in question is Paradox, that little metaphor is just a little terrifying.

Hopefully Una's staring is just curiosity and not something weirder.

No, Cerys. I don't think it's co-operative. We should take time to synchronize spells with Una at some point, though.

Looking at the ability in question, Gaia's giddiness makes a lot of sense. I'm not sure about the old MGs in firequest, but mainline Gaia wouldn't have actually seen the upper ends of magical girls yet.

I'm curious what Cerys's "inkling" is.
You have a lot of experience in ignoring her odd moods though and your training with Una went well, better than well. Cerys misses Morgan and can't teach well.

Fight scene, Una telegraphs, our sword has a much larger flat side than I thought it did.

Cerys cooling Una off was good at showing how casually/instinctively Cerys uses her temperature control now. It was also cute.

Daiyu was prideful/traditional about sword fighting technique?
She's taken it upon herself to try and create a 'Magical Girl' sword style, one that focuses more on overcoming enemies with multiple hits and taking advantage of the inherent toughness magical beings have. That most girls seem to have some sort of advanced mobility is also an important part, since you can't rely on having solid footing when most fights involve shattering the surroundings by accident.

We should probably look into that. Skill is rarely wasted.

On a grander scale, I doubt there will ever be a unified style - the diverse spread of weapons and abilities render that pretty much impossible, but figuring out some outlines that each girl can customize to fit should be perfectly workable.
Speaking of the devil. When she's not training on her own, she's here, watching you train. You aren't sure if she's trying to figure out some sort of weakness in your abilities or if she just likes staring at you, you'd put it at a 50/50.

Sabina is continuing her trend of being mostly interested in fighting. Very passive, surprisingly.

Once again, mindset change from Magic. I'm pretty sure that doesn't happen in mainline. Did Cerys change with hers? It seems not, but we can't be sure.

Sabina not objecting to things Cerys does because she's her sword.

Cerys feels bad thinking about it. I don't quite think she feels guilty about sabina's alteration, but...
Poor Sabina.

More Quasi-guilt over Sabina...Hopefully she recognizes that she didn't cause it.

We need to find things for sabina to do. Not busywork, but we should never leave her without someway to participate.

Sabina used a gesture of affection. I don't remember her doing that often.

I don't think she'll try to turn on us again, after that insight.

She watches us because we're training. That line just doesn't make much sense to me. What does it matter that we are training instead of, say, reading? It doesn't seem to tie into the earlier conversation at all.
A sword should always be ready and able, it should be the one that it's wielder trusts most and they should know each other intimately." Your eyebrows raise, but she turns away to look at the night sky.

Same things as before. Poor Sabina. Cerys still feeling guilty about things she had no effect on.

Does Sabina particularly like watching the stars, or is it just the current scene?

Hugs for Sabina. The journal thing is...probably a good idea?

Sabina trusts us not to fuck up. Looks at webpage. Errrr.
Ish.
I assume this means it acts as if Cerys has a gravitational pull. I cannot envision what being gravity would be like. Weird grammar aside, this is mostly a magical detail. I wonder if we could focus that pull on something? Or if we could get parallels to the other fundamental forces in some way? I know Cerys's concept is linked to entropy and tangentially to physics.

Crazy magical experiments aside, this is mostly describing , but it also tells us that Cerys is educated enough/remembers enough to remember being taught about gravity due to the use of the apple as the falling object.
Cerys seems not to care that much about "eating people", especially compared to her feelings on Sabina's issue.

Gaia seems a little silly there. Trying to get Cerys to like her more via positive associations? I am absolutely mangling the correct way to say that.

Omega is digesting. Gaia might have been being literal. The magic fading away...I'm not sure if that's good or bad. Could be our MM is going down again...or it could be it's getting integrated. It doesn't seem to have gone down on the sheet.

Una hugging, more casual magic, hugs with Una. More seriously, Una dealing with death.

That last paragraph has a bunch of implications, but it's after 4 AM and I have no chance of explaining them right now, so I'm just posting it.
Regarding our sheet...
Reality Crash
-10,000xp
-If Total End Damage is below 50% of the target's maximum health, double Total End Damage. (Recursive)
Okay then. My questions have been answered. Also, that was so far from what I was expecting.

Very good but proportionately expensive. Judging by our typical spending habits, I doubt we'll be getting this until after the demons show up, if at all. I wonder what practicing on it before we buy it even does. Nothing?
-If something dies nearby, increase Magic Modifier by the amount of xp it is worth, starting from 1.
Hm. Interesting and useful. Not the same as the spell absorption.

Reinforcement: Iron
-750xp
-Reinforcement Level 20
Increase Reinforcement bonus from 5% to 10%.
Pretty good numbers-wise, and almost certainly has unlisted benefits. It is expensive enough that we may want to save for other things instead, though.

We should probably look into that. Skill is rarely wasted.

On a grander scale, I doubt there will ever be a unified style - the diverse spread of weapons and abilities render that pretty much impossible, but figuring out some outlines that each girl can customize to fit should be perfectly workable.

Same things as before. Poor Sabina. Cerys still feeling guilty about things she had no effect on.

Yes

Otherwise, this is exactly the sort of post I love reading, it gives me insights into what you guys think about things.
